DID YOU KNOW . . . . . . Victoria Park predates the city? Some Brisbane parks are remnants of Aboriginal camping ground used before white settlement and into historic times. Victoria Park and the ‘Ekka’ grounds were Barrambin (windy place) and Walan – a camp and centre for inter-tribal tournaments and post-ceremony activities. Up to 1,000 people, visiting from all over the Moreton region, stayed here. At the middle lay a beautiful chain of waterholes, were slowly drained as Brisbane’s first water supply - one still survives. Residents of this major camp supplied Brisbane with much of its firewood, bark and bush plant needs, also working as domestics and manual labourers. The park was the scene of Aboriginal-settler conflict during the 1840s-1850s: the capture and execution of Yilbung and Ommuli; and raids by Brisbane’s militia and police.

HISTORIC PROFILE Mercy Heritage CentreSituated within historic All Hallows’ Convent, over-looking the Brisbane River and Story Bridge, the Mercy Heritage Centre sits within a unique cultural heritage setting. The Centre is a social history museum dedicated to preserving the legacy of the Sisters of Mercy Brisbane. Whilst the museum is currently closed, you can still appreciate the historical convent building from the street frontage along Ann Street and access resources on the website, www.mercyheritage.com.

DID YOU KNOW . . . . . . although Brisbane’s Customs House was completed in 1889 and the federation of the Australian colonies dated from 1901, this iconic building boasts a Coat of Arms within its pediments that intrigues, as none of the Australian colonies had been accorded a Coat of Arms at the time of its construction. The Coat of Arms looks remarkably like the present-day Australian Coat of Arms, complete with the exhortation to ‘Advance Australia’. Perhaps the ornamentation to the Customs House pediment is linked to a medal struck in 1853, acknowledging the end of the transportation of convicts to Tasmania?

Page 9: The Heritage Guide: discover Brisbane's stories

7INNER CITY

HISTORIC PROFILE Central StationThe Central Railway Station opened in 1889 as a temporary structure and represents the northern end of a defining ‘Line of Sight’ architectural design for the City which has, as its southern end, the Anglican Church of St Mary The Virgin at Kangaroo Point. A contract for a permanent building dates from 1899 and the design of the clock tower is attributed to onetime Colonial Architect JJ Clark, who provided the inspiration for the Treasury Building at the top of Queen St.

ANZAC Square War MemorialThis historic site features the Shrine of Remembrance with Eternal Flame, War Memorials, Honour Rolls, Unit Plaques and artefacts from WWII cemeteries. The stairs linking the Shrine with the Square are 19 on one side and 18 on the other, signifying 1918, the year the Great War ended.

HISTORIC PROFILE General Post OfficeBrisbane’s General Post Office [GPO] opened in 1872 to a design by FDG Stanley at a cost of £7,450. John Petrie was the builder, using a combination of porphyry from Kangaroo Point and sandstone. The original plans provided for a handsome clock tower; however, this work did not proceed.

The Telegraph Office, another commission for John Petrie, was completed in 1879.

DID YOU KNOW . . . . . . the Windmill on Wickham Terrace is the oldest surviving windmill tower in Australia and reputably the oldest example of European construction in Queensland. Dating from 1828, it later became an Observatory and Signal Station reporting on shipping arrivals and, for many years, helped ‘keep the time’ for the citizens of Brisbane with the firing of a cannon and the dropping of its time ball at 1.00pm.

HISTORIC PROFILE Treasury CasinoSituated at the river end of the Queen St Mall, the Queensland Government Treasury Building was built in three stages between 1886 and 1928. John James Clarke’s neo-Italianate design was used for the new four-storey plan which was changed from the original two-storey plan proposed by Melbourne architects Grainger and D’Ebro. Looking closely at the building, the three stages of development can be seen by the colour changes of the sandstone ashlar casing of the building.

DID YOU KNOW . . . . . . that Queen Victoria personally chose the name ‘Queensland’ in 1859. Her statue in Queens Gardens was a replica of a statue located at Hove in the UK. Created by the sculptor Thomas Bock, this example dates from 1906. And whilst on the subject of royalty, many of the streets of Brisbane’s CBD are named for kings, queens, princes and princesses – the ‘ladies’ travel east to west; the ‘men’ north to south!

DID YOU KNOW . . . . . . that Brisbane has a link to London’s famous Big Ben through a building adjacent to the Cathedral of St Stephen in Elizabeth Street. Celebrating its first Mass in May 1850 and later becoming the first Roman Catholic Cathedral in Brisbane, this structure is attributed to a design by AWN Pugin [1812–1852] whose many commissions included the tower in which Big Ben is housed.

DID YOU KNOW . . . . . . that Devils have run amuck in George St; seven in fact who normally look down from the 1910 section of the old Government Printing Office? It has been suggested – perhaps unkindly – that four of the seven are representations of the politicians of the day. And why devils? Whatever the reason, it has certainly caused alarm to the two cats further up the street. These frightened felines can be easily seen, clinging for dear life to the parapets of the nearby Mansions building.

All Saints’ Anglican Church All Saints’ Church is the oldest continually used Anglican Church in Brisbane. Established by Bishop Tufnell, it was built in 1869 with one of the only three Lewis Organs in Australia. The hammer beam roof is unique in Australia.

DID YOU KNOW . . . . . . in colonial times, Queensland operated its own navy with ship names such as, Gayundah, Paluma, Midge and Mosquito. The Naval Stores survive to this day at the base of the cliffs at Kangaroo Point and the Queen Anne style Naval Offices at the Botanic Gardens’ end of Edward St date from 1900. A onetime Commandant of the Queensland Marine Defence Force, William Rooke Cresswell, came to be known as ‘The Father of the Royal Australian Navy’.

DID YOU KNOW . . . . . . on a hot summer’s day there is nothing more refreshing than to bite into a portion of chilled mango or pawpaw; that is unless you are in Elizabeth St in Brisbane’s CBD. Here on the wall of the GPO building, across from the Cathedral of St Stephen and high above the traffic, are two depictions of mango and pawpaw trees . . . sculptured in stone! These are examples of the work of celebrated Brisbane artisan Lewis Jarvis Harvey and are recorded as dating from 1910.

HISTORIC PROFILE Former South Brisbane Town HallConstructed in 1891–1892 for the South Brisbane Municipal Council, this two-storeyed former municipal chambers provided a focus for the new Borough of South Brisbane that sought to rival in development the Municipality of Brisbane. The place is significant as a major and early Brisbane work by the important architect, John S Murdock. Many United States military personnel in Brisbane were associated with the hall during the Second World War.

HISTORIC PROFILEMusgrave ParkDid you know that Musgrave Park is an Aboriginal Meeting Place? For over 70 years, Musgrave Park has been ‘the’ centre for Brisbane’s Aboriginal communities to connect, socialise and – if need be – express their political views. It is also the venue for a host of Indigenous cultural activities including one of Australia’s largest NAIDOC celebrations – with up to 20,000 attendees each July.

The park is the last remaining fragment of the once-huge South Brisbane and Woolloongabba Water and Recreation Reserves. These were the Southside’s main water source and site of its largest Aboriginal camps – stretching from Brisbane State High School east to the Mater Hospital. During the 1840s to 1870s, the camps provided much of South Brisbane’s honey, reeds, water-carrying and fish supplies. One translation of Woolloongabba is ‘fight talk place’, which expresses how the area was an important pullen-pullen (tournament ground), experiencing a long history of conflict. As early as 1827, residents of these camps tried to ‘starve out’ Brisbane settlement by destroying its crops at the location, known now as South Bank and Kangaroo Point.

By the 1960s and 1970s, many Aboriginal services and organisations were established close to the park and it became the staging point for massive protests and ‘tent cities’ seeking land rights. Musgrave Park Family Fun Day (usually on 10th July) is a good time for the whole community to enjoy the park’s Indigenous cultural heritage.

HISTORIC PROFILE Ancient temple defied the oddsDuring the 19th century, Breakfast Creek and Eagle Farm’s Cantonese community provided most of Brisbane’s fruit and vegetables from their market gardens. Between 1885 and 1886, in the heart of their community, they built what remains as Queensland’s oldest and longest-used Chinese temple. Feng shui is said to have enabled the temple to survive the 1894, 1974 and 2011 Brisbane floods. The temple is open to the public thanks to a caretaker-monk.

DID YOU KNOW . . . … that Holland Park was a welcome stop for cameleers? The oldest mosque on the eastern seaboard of Australia, and still the heart of Queensland’s Muslim community, sits on the slopes of Mt Thompson. Between 1908 and the 1920s, Afghans, fresh from long treks in outback Queensland tied up their camels here as they took time for much-needed rest and worship. The current building is much younger (1968–1970) but has hosted celebrities and dignitaries. Visits and tours can be arranged by phoning.
