Common Foot AilmentsStanding for prolonged periods of time can have a negative effect on your feet and legs. These are some common ailments caused by prolonged standing:
Prevention - I
Sit Frequently
•If your job requires you to stand for long hours, have a seat nearby for resting.
•Do not stand for longer than half an hour at a time without sitting down for at least 5-10 minutes.
Doing this will reduce the strain on your back and feet, thus preventing back pain and weak ankles.
Prevention - II
Keep Walking
•Can’t have a seat nearby? Not enough rest breaks? Ease up the pressure on your feet by walking around at intervals.
•Walking increases the circulation of blood in your legs and exercises your muscles.
Doing this will help prevent varicose veins and weak ankles.
Prevention - III
Make Your Workstation Comfortable
•Make sure your workstation is adjustable for height. A workstation that is too-high or too-low can increase the pressure on your back and foot muscles.
• Lean forward with your elbows on your workstation/desk to take the pressure off your feet and reduce fatigue.
Prevention - IV
Wear the Right Shoes
•Wear comfortable, low-heeled shoes.
•Ensure that your footwear distributes your weight evenly on your feet instead of just at the heels or toes.
•The right footwear can help prevent foot deformities like bunions and corns.
