Welcome to the

June edition of

‘The Hampton

Viewer’

Finally the sun is shining - or at least it

is while I’m sitting here typing this.

Hopefully, as you read this, the sun is still

shining and we can look forward to a

summer of picnic’s and BBQ’s.

Half term school holidays and the

Queens Diamond Jubilee is now upon

us. There are lots of events celebrating

the Queen’s Jubilee going on in the

City. A few of which we have details in

the magazine, see page 36 & 39.

Whatever you are doing, whether it

be one of these events or a private

street party, I hope you have a great

weekend.

Also, don’t forget Father’s Day on

17th June. If you are stumped with an

idea, we have once again, some great

ideas within the magazine, from a good

book (page 24) to a flying lesson (see

page 25).

As a quick reminder, there is still

time to join ‘Race for Life’ in aid of

Cancer Research on 10th July or

The Rockingham Forest Bike Ride on

24th June in aid of The British Heart

Foundation - for more details see last

month’s issue.

Finally, if you have a community /

charity event happening in your area

that may be of interest to your

neighbours, please contact me (details

below), I will be happy to promote it on

our local events page free of charge.

I hope you all have a great month!

BEAUTY

A great tan is essential for summer. We all know however that spending hours soaking up the sun’s rays is a

definite no-no. It’s no surprise then that more and more of us are opting for the safe option and getting a golden glow courtesy of one of the many ‘at home’ fake tanners that are on the market.

It’s not always easy to achieve the results you’d hoped for though - most people have an ‘orange disaster’ tale to tell. That’s why we’ve compiled a definitive guide to fake tanning. It’s just in time to help you look beach-ready and gorgeous and it goes a long way to prove that with careful preparation, the right products and an hour of your time, you can successfully be transformed into a bronzed goddess.

Step One - The right product If you’re new to self-tanning or have pale skin, it’s a good idea to start with a gradual tanning product. The result is fairly subtle which means it’s forgiving of beginners’ mistakes and it also allows you to achieve

the depth of colour you want gradually.

Step Two - Planning Consider where you will be applying your tan. The bathroom is the obvious choice, but not necessarily the best. Ideally you need a fair amount of space, a full length mirror and lots of natural light. Allow plenty of time and don’t be tempted to rush.

Step Three - Exfoliate The most important stage of the process is preparation. Your skin is the canvas on which the fake tan product will be applied and it needs to be as even and smooth as possible.

Exfoliation is integral for establishing the right base. It’s best done the night before, as it allows the skin to settle overnight. If you’re going to wax your legs, then make sure you allow 24 hours between waxing and tanning to avoid dark dots that emerge as a result of the product building up in open follicles. Thoroughly removing dead skin cells will allow for an even base on which to apply the tan.

Step Four - Moisturise

Moisturising is essential. Be incredibly generous with your moisturiser and ensure that it’s fragrance and colour free, as some varieties can affect the result of the tan. Pay particular attention to troublesome areas. Knees, ankles, elbows and wrists are generally drier and will soak up the tanning product if not properly moisturised, resulting in a patchy finish.

Step Five - Apply When applying the tan it’s a good idea to wear latex gloves. Work quickly but carefully, starting with your feet and methodically covering every inch of your skin evenly. Don’t forget to include your armpits, toes and backs of your ankles.

Step Six - Don’t forget hands

Once you have tanned your entire body, remove your gloves and thoroughly moisturise your hands, working the cream into nails, knuckles and wrists. Apply a dot of fake tan to the back of one hand and rub it against the other, working up past the wrists.

2

Step Seven - Leave to dry

Drying times vary from product to product - mousses tend to work faster than creams or lotions. Whichever you use, it’s imperative that you allow it to dry on the skin fully. Speed up the process with a cool blast of air from your hairdryer. When you do dress, choose loose fitting clothes and keep away from water for at least six hours.

The Whinge Please, Please Me (The Fool on the Hill)

S o it has finally hap-pened – to my wife, at least. She is suffering

ignominy and humiliation the likes of which she has never had to bear before. More embarrassing than w hen she d id her impromptu impression of Alice and sprained her ankle tripping over a rabbit hole. More humiliating than when her driving instructor informed her that she drives faster than she thinks. Even more disgrace than when she fell out of the back door completely missing the step and spraining her ankle (again – seems like there might be a theme there).

What has happened? Well not only is my wife now a running widow but my daughter has joined a local running club and this year on my wife’s wedding anniversary my daughter and I took part in races whilst my wife had to watch and feign enthusiasm as she half-heartedly whooped and cheered us alternatively. On top of which she had to get up early on a Sunday for us to get to the race.

She did get to have a meal out though – but it was at an Italian so that the runners in the family could re-carbo-load.

However, all this is just leading you, dear reader, into a sense of false security because I have a reason for enticing you.

I don’t know if I’ve mentioned. But just a couple of weeks after you receive this magazine and my wife and I have trudged round Hampton pushing them through your letterboxes I will be running. I shall be running from Carlisle Castle to Gateshead Millennium Bridge along Hadrian’s Wall(http://www.thewallrun.com). 69 miles over 2 days (23rd and 24th June) and I shall be running in aid of Alzheimer’s.

My training has gone well, not quite to plan because of the elongated winter (see previous blogs such as “Running to Stand Still”), but unfortunately my fund-raising has been awful. So this is a plea rather than a whinge this month. If you’ve enjoyed my musings (The Whinge and In the Night Sky) over the past few years then I would be grateful if you would cons ider donating through either my Just Giving page (http://

www . j u s t g i v i n g . c om /

asflintoft) or my Virgin

Money Giving page (http://

uk.virginmoneygiving.com/

asflintoft ). You can even donate by text to my Just Giving account by texting FLIN70 £3 to 70070 (donation is £3 and texts costs nothing on top of that, i.e. all of your £3 goes to Alzheimer’s or you can donate more by changing the £3 if you’re feeling flush!) If you want to know why I’m running then please read “A Reason to Run” and again, “Running to Stand Still”, both available on my website or send me a message via [email protected] .

I don’t know if I’ll finish because I’ve never done anything like this before so I could really do with some motivation. I am very grateful for those who have already sponsored me and to anyone who does so now.

Next month copy deadline will be too early for me to tell you how I get on, but I will do so in August’s edition. And then I promise I’ll stop going on about it. Well for a bit at least.

By James Baggott, editor of Car Dealer Magazine (CarDealerMag.co.uk)

I must admit if I had a nice long drive in front of my house, like Lord March, I

wouldn’t get much work done.

The temptation to hoon up and down and scare the milkman in anything with an engine would just be too great to resist.

Unfortunately, I don’t have that problem, so an invite to apply some rubber to the Goodwood estate’s well wheel-trodden hill climb is always welcome.

My invite came for the media day for Goodwood’s 2012 motoring events – the Festival of Speed and the Revival. The day is a chance for Lord March to ramp up the excitement surrounding the two events and a good opportunity for the media to get behind the wheel of some new metal from the supporting manufacturers.

Fortunately I was looking forward to one helluva ride. Nissan had offered a last minute spin up the hill in one of only two Juke Rs in the world. For those of you that aren’t in the know, this is basically the love child of a Juke / GT-R one night stand – and the right genes made it across into the sibling.

Under the matt black Juke bodywork is the running gear and engine from the GT-R. The 3.8-litre, 485bhp twin turbo charged engine has been squeezed into the Juke’s bodywork, the four-wheel drive carried across and it has the performance to match. Foot to the floor and 60mph arrives in around three seconds. The mad project was conceived as a marketing exercise by Nissan GB’s former MD Paul Willcox who, when he took up his new post in Europe, gave it the green light.

Costing £250,000 each, the pair were designed and built in the UK by RML – one left-hand and one right-hand drive. The latter is for exclusive use in the UK.

So what’s it like to drive? Well, the 1.16-mile Lord March drive was never going to be long enough to get a real feel for this amazing car, but first impressions were staggering.

The Juke R handles all that power remarkably well, transferring it into forward thrust with no drama, much like the bigger GT-R does. There was just enough time to savour the whoosh of the turbos on the start straight as the hay bales and trees quickly melted into a summery soup of colour.

The first corner is a tight right hander and an overzealous prod on the cold brakes soon made me realise I could have carried 20mph more through the bend.

In front of the house, I managed five seconds-ish of full throttle madness and the Juke R’s turn of pace staggered – 120mph was indicated on the digital readout (my passenger reliably informed me).

Flint wall safely passed without grazes, the final section of the run allowed a little more confidence. It was soon clear that although hand-built, the Juke R is a very competent and polished piece of kit. It reminds me of a Renault 5 GT Turbo – but turned all the way up to 11.

It’s just a shame these two marketing models are all we’re ever likely to see. There’s very little chance we’ll ever get a production run model. The cost and build time would make it very difficult to justify – especially when a GT-R can be had for circa £70k.

Still, as drives up garden paths go, this Nissan-powered excursion will be remembered as a very special one.

In The Night Sky #15

T his month is a bit strange for astronomy because although there is a lot going on, quite a lot of it is in

the daytime. Most ardent astronomers tend to have very pale skin and flinch when confronted by bright lights, in fact if you shine a torch anywhere near an astronomer you’re likely to receive a tirade of abuse unless it’s got a red filter on it. But June this year will be different, you’ll start to see astronomers creep out during daylight but they’ll still be staring in wonder at the sky.

Around the middle of the night Venus will transit across the Sun. Unfortunately being in the middle of the night tends to mean that there isn’t a Sun there to see so we will just see the tail end of this event in this country as the Sun rises just before 5am and Venus will have cleared the Sun by just an hour later. Even though we won’t see the highlight of this event you’ll still see plenty of astronomers staring in wonder because the next such event won’t be until 2117, then 2125, but neither of these will be as good in the UK as this year’s, for one as good we’ll have to wait until 2247 and I for one don’t

think I’ll make it! (The last 3 transits were in 2004, 1812 and 1874).

Another Sun event this month is the Sum-mer Solstice at 23:09 on 20 June when the Sun will be at its highest point in the sky – I know it’ll actually be night then and the Sun won’t be up in the UK but that’s the technical point of the solstice. For us in the UK the effective solstice (the longest day) will be on 21st June. The unfortunate thing about the solstice is that after that the nights start drawing in as we head helter-skelter towards winter again! But this does mean longer nights and more nightwatching opportunities.

The reason for a solstice and in fact seasons on Earth is that the Earth is inclined in its orbital path, the picture shows this quite well with the far left being the summer solstice in the North.

So for this month, happy DAYwatching!

CANCER JUNE 22 - JULY 22 June is a month of introspection for

Cancerians. Both Jupiter and Venus

travel opportunity.

LEO JULY 23 - AUGUST 23 June is a very sociable month for Leos, as

expansive Jupiter shines on all areas of

Jupiter has now left your career angle,

progress made earlier will continue to expand during

this half of the year as work projects continue to

flourish.

VIRGO AUG. 24 - SEPT. 22 Abundant Jupiter reaches the highest

point in your chart on the 12th

encourages the start of an extremely

creative and rewarding cycle. You are

able to treat all minor inconveniences with a posi-

tive attitude and you’ll find that this helps you to

achieve ultimate success.

LIBRA SEPT. 23 - OCT. 23 Mighty Jupiter shifts to the adventurous

provides you with extra motivation,

power and energy to move forward with personal

and business plans.

for Scorpios this month & as benevolent

Jupiter moves into Gemini on the 12th

surprises coming your way. Optimism is

high and you should also feel more deserving of any

recognition that you receive.

positive move to learn as much as

possible and to go after what you want. A per-

sonal relationship is reaching new depths of inti-

macy as your overall approach changes.

CAPRICORN DEC. 22 - JAN. 20

Work and everyday matters are in focus

this month. Personal insight comes to a

head on the 12th

everything that you do. The key to success is time

alone for reflection.

AQUARIUS JAN. 21 - FEB. 18 The pace of your life speeds up this

month as Jupiter moves into Gemini on

financial reward and the new moon on the 19th

presents an opportunity.

spotlight this month and domestic

matters could include expansive home

improvements. Assertive Mars in Virgo

provides you with personal power and extra

motivation, as you realise that you can take on

anything that comes your way.

ARIES MARCH 21 - APRIL 20 Jupiter, planet of expansion, moves

into a pivotal point in your chart. Edu-

cation, learning and communication

are high on your agenda now and dur-

ing the 12 months ahead. This is the time to re-

view how you come across to others, and make

exciting plans to broaden your horizons.

TAURUS APRIL 21 - MAY 21 Mighty Jupiter leaves your sign on the

11th

Pop-ular event raises

thousands for charity

C haritable locals painted the town Orange as they

took part in an exciting new walk.

Almost 200 people attended ‘Pop around Peterborough’ – a 5 mile charity walk on behalf of Arthritis Research UK.

All walkers were given an Arthritis Research UK balloon, which they ‘Popped’ once crossing the finish line, to find out if they have won a prize. Prizes included a Flat-screen television (donated by British Sugar) a signed Phantoms Hockey Stick, and signed Warwick Davis book.

One top prize, a night at the Peterborough Greyhound Stadium worth £600, was won by Lynn Freeman. Lynn and her Daughter Sophie wanted to do the walk in memory of her husband Malcolm. She explained, “He suffered dreadfully for many years with severe Rheumatoid Arthritis. For many years, this dreadful disease ravaged his body, he had numerous operations, lots of health compli-cations & had both his legs amputated due to the rheumatoid & became completely wheelchair bound. He was unable to feed himself, wash or brush his teeth. We lost him suddenly & unexpectedly on Boxing Day 3 years ago. We miss him dreadfully.”

Lynn continued “Throughout his infirmity he always kept his fabulous sense of humour, he was a truly amazing man. He would’ve loved to have been at Pop around Peterborough today and I somehow think he was, as Sophie won a top prize. I believe that generally, a lot of people are not aware of how devastating Arthritis can be, so any publicity for Arthritis Research is wonderful.”

Another inspiring walker was Six-year-old Sian Paton, who suffers with Arthritis. Despite the condition often leaving her in pain, Sian managed the full distance.

Organisers provided free entertainment before the walk kicked off. This included singing from Rob Trevor (lead singer of local band New Generation Crash and Burn), and popular Bellydancers – Faye and the Desert Dancers.

Michael Clarke, the event organiser and Regional Fundraising Manager for Arthritis Research UK explained, “As this was the first year holding this event, I wasn’t sure what to expect. I couldn’t have been more pleased with the number of supporters who turned up. The sun was shining and there was an incredible atmosphere.

“There are over 10 million people in the UK right now suffering from Arthritis, so nearly everyone will know someone close to them affected. The money raised from this event will see that we continue to make a difference to those with the condition.”
