CORE COURSES - ELECTIVES - CONFERENCES The characteristics of the European Executive MBA population have a strong influence on the design of the academic content. Participants are all practiced professionals in their respective fields of competence. With 5 to 15 years of professional experience, these men and women have been identified as high potential executives by their employers. They range in age from 30 to 45 years, represent many nationalities, have diverse professional backgrounds and include a significant proportion of engineers as well as economists and business school graduates. As such, they already possess a high level of experience and expertise. It is the reason why the pedagogy of the European Executive MBA draws upon the participants’ pool of experience. Our MBA programme includes three types of teaching methods, each with its particular logic: - core courses - electives - conferences. 1. Core Courses The programme includes 9 core courses, most of which comprise 12 or 24 contact hours, whose objective is to provide participants with fundamental knowledge geared to the topic of each core course. For each of the 9 core courses, participants will be provided with a reference manual by ESCP Europe. The objective of a core course is to present and explain the essential elements and the points of reference considered to be the most relevant within the framework of a global approach to the subject by non specialists. It is important to remember that the objective of a core course in the context of an MBA programme is not – in 12 or 24 hours – to transform participants into experts, but to provide senior managers with professional knowledge as well as operational and functional expertise in different departments. Therefore, each core course sheds new light on a given topic, offering an insight into the global reality of organisations and the different forces contributing to their performance. Accordingly, even though class participation is most welcome, a core course is essentially a formal lecture in which concepts and structures make for dynamic teaching, and exercises. Exchanges between participants will mostly be used to support and illustrate course content.

2. Electives The electives, which total 12 contact hours, are above all practical modules aimed at applying and/or strengthening participants’ knowledge on a particular topic. Each participant must validate 12 electives chosen from a portfolio of 36. Electives are always related to one or several core courses so as to achieve in-depth understanding of a specific topic. Such knowledge has not yet been explored within the framework of a core course where the focus is on real-life situations as well as case studies and, most importantly, on participants’ own experience. An elective course involving actions, decisions, applications and participants’ experience offers the opportunity to: - Study practical situations, which have been selected by the professor, proposed by a "leading figure of the business world" (e.g. CEO, corporate manager, consultant) or even one of the programme participants. - Test a concept through games, simulations or practical exercises. - Analyse a real or simulated problem. - Design an action plan. - Devise decision-making tools such as analysis tables, performance charts, etc. To achieve this goal the teaching approach to an elective course is based on the optimisation of time. Therefore, prior to the beginning of each elective course, recommended reading is suggested to participants, so that they may familiarise themselves with a new topic. Class discussions between participants further develop the knowledge acquired while reading these book chapters. On occasion, participants may be asked to present a case from their own business environment if it relates to the elective or workshop topic. 3. Conferences The conferences which are scheduled at regular intervals during the programme aim at providing participants with relevant historical, socio-economic and cultural references. Each two-hour conference explores: - a specific issue which would be too narrowly focused to be addressed as a full-fledged elective course. - a field of expertise presented by an external speaker (e.g. experts, entrepreneurs, directors).

INTERNATIONAL SEMINARS ESCP Europe is ideally located to observe first-hand managerial action and expertise in all types of industries. Such an advantage greatly contributes to the Executive MBA participants’ understanding of current business dynamics within organisations and companies. So, in order to provide participants with a clear vision of the international business context and its challenges, five one-week International Seminars are organised over the 18-month programme, three of them in cooperation with partner institutions. Each of them is designed to explore a specific theme related to the business environment in all its dimensions. Moreover, these seminars also offer participants great opportunities to share knowledge and experience with their Executive MBA peers.

- Induction Seminar (January Y1). During this 1st seminar, which takes place on the ESCP Europe campus in Paris (France), participants gain a deeper understanding of company structures and processes, develop analytical skills in order to examine patterns of organisational change and assess today’s key management issues.

- European Business Environment Seminar (April Y1) This 2nd seminar takes place in Brussels (Belgium) and highlights the structure and functioning of European institutions and their influence on the business environment, macro-economical challenges, competition regulations, lobbying techniques and practices, EU relations with other regional markets.

- Regional Leadership Seminar (October Y1) In the current context of globalisation, an ability to lead projects and take advantage of business opportunities in developing and emerging countries is highly valued by companies. Participants have the choice of travelling either to Asia (India or China) or Latin America (Brazil). The main focus of this 3rd seminar is to review major issues that firms and their managers have to deal with when developing projects, venturing or doing business in these regions.

- Innovation Management Seminar (March Y2) The flexibility of the North-American business culture which fosters innovation is highlighted during this 4th seminar which enables Executive MBA participants to understand the shift from a production- to a knowledge-based economy and the resulting role of innovation. The 2012 seminar will be held in Austin (Texas).

- Closing Seminar (June Y2) This 5th and capstone seminar is devoted to integrating skills and knowledge acquired during the Executive MBA through global case studies and testimonials focused on strategy implementation and leadership styles. The 2012 Closing Seminar will take place in London (Great-Britain).

These five International Seminars form an integral part of the EMBA curriculum and include three common phases: 1. Preparation: introduction and framework - An introductory conference given a few weeks before the departure is designed to provide participants with basic understanding of the region they will visit from various standpoints: historical, cultural, economic and social. - A pre-reading book, based on recent articles from the international press, will give participants further material to reflect on before the seminar. 2. The seminar: experiencing the difference Five days may seem too short a time to understand the economic, entrepreneurial and managerial dynamics of any country. The pedagogy of the seminar takes this into account in determining its intensive pace and the added-value of its content. Each day of the weeklong seminar (7 to 8 hours per day) will ideally be structured as follows: - A half-day session in the form of a conference, led by professors, consultants, representatives of major institutions, public figures, journalists, experts both local and European. The objective is for these speakers to convey their experience and expertise to participants who can then put this into perspective with their own diverse experiences and backgrounds. - A more active and interactive half-day during which participants visit institutions, companies or sites of particular significance; - A debriefing of the day’s content, led by ESCP Europe faculty. This step is instrumental in beginning to prepare the post-seminar assignments that participants will be required to complete. Of course, regarding the location of the seminar, the organization of each day’s content can be modified to take into account scheduling and logistic constraints. 3. Post-seminar: integration by analysis After each international seminar, Executive MBA participants are required to work in groups on the analysis of a theme developed during the seminar. Themes are determined and groups formed at the beginning of each seminar.

INTERNATIONAL CONSULTANCY PROJECT (ICP)

The International Consultancy Project (ICP) is an integral part of the pedagogical dynamic of the European Executive MBA. 1. Objective The ICP is a team project. The objectives are: - to provide participants with a collaborative, multi-disciplinary and often intercultural work experience on a real-life strategic challenge; - to put into practice the concepts and theory acquired during the MBA with the support and guidance of an ESCP Europe faculty member.

2. Outline In groups, participants are expected to perform an in-depth analysis of a situation or a problem faced by a company and to define recommendations for actions that can realistically be implemented by the business. This 8 to 12-month team project allows participants to use and consolidate their understanding of the concepts and tools taught during the programme: - either in a business context with which he/she is not familiar, - or in collaboration with his/her employer. The outcome of the ICP is a series of recommendations that the company can implement in order to meet the strategic challenge at hand. The company sponsor receives a comprehensive written report on the team’s conclusions and each team is required to present the conclusions of the project in front of an academic jury. The presentation is made publicly or privately according to the level of confidentiality required by the company sponsor. 3. Themes The ICP’s theme is based on a strategic issue: - creation of a business plan for a new activity, - reorganisation of a distribution network, - market or product diversification, etc. The Dean approves each ICP subject. Once a project is approved, each team is assigned an ESCP Europe faculty tutor. The tutor’s role is to guide the team’s work in terms of methodology and to monitor the team’s progress. For companies sponsoring a project, the ICP is an opportunity to work with an experienced, dynamic team and to appreciate firsthand the value of an MBA education. For participants who wish to work on a personal entrepreneurial project, the ICP can create the ideal conditions for the validation of their business venture.

EVALUATION AND CLASS REPS 1. Evaluation of the MBA Programme In order to enhance the quality of the MBA programme, individual evaluation forms are filled up by the MBA participants at the end of each core course, elective or seminar. Lectures are assessed on the basis of the following criteria: interest of the topic, quality of the lecture, quality of the pedagogical material. Evaluations of the seminars include items on the quality of testimonials or company visits, accommodations, quality of the global organisation of the seminar. A global synthesis of these individual evaluations is reported back to the entire class each semester on the intranet. These individual evaluations are instrumental in assessing the MBA programme response to the MBA participants’ needs. They are the basis on which the Dean and the Director of the MBA programme work in cooperation with the MBA Class representatives. 2. Class representatives One Class representative per track and per semester is elected by fellow track mates. Elections are organised at the beginning of each semester (February Y1, June Y1, January Y2). Class representatives have three missions: 1/ Acting as an interface between the class and the Dean and MBA administration - gathering feedback from the class on academic issues, programme administration and logistics, questions and comments of general interest to the class or the programme; - meeting with the Dean and the MBA administrative staff on a regular basis to discuss class comments and issues; - communicating to the class the Dean’s conclusions, suggestions and solutions. 2/ Representing the MBA class during special events This may include meetings with journalists, accrediting bodies, the school’s administration, alumni association representatives as well as participation at events organized by the CCIP or other organizations. 3/ Enhancing the class social dynamics This includes the organisation of gatherings in order to facilitate the networking within the class. Class reps regularly meet the MBA Dean and Programme Director to make adjustments to the programme when deemed necessary. In order to promote exchange across the different tracks, three MBA class lunches are organised with the key players of the MBA adventure: Class Reps of all tracks, Dean of the MBA, Programme Director and Programme Managers. The MBA Class Representatives also sit on the MBA Academic Committee.

EVALUATION AND CLASS REPS 1. Evaluation of the MBA Programme In order to enhance the quality of the MBA programme, individual evaluation forms are filled up by the MBA participants at the end of each core course, elective or seminar. Lectures are assessed on the basis of the following criteria: interest of the topic, quality of the lecture, quality of the pedagogical material. Evaluations of the seminars include items on the quality of testimonials or company visits, accommodations, quality of the global organisation of the seminar. A global synthesis of these individual evaluations is reported back to the entire class each semester on the intranet. These individual evaluations are instrumental in assessing the MBA programme response to the MBA participants’ needs. They are the basis on which the Dean and the Director of the MBA programme work in cooperation with the MBA Class representatives. 2. Class representatives One Class representative per track and per semester is elected by fellow track mates. Elections are organised at the beginning of each semester (February Y1, June Y1, January Y2). Class representatives have three missions: 1/ Acting as an interface between the class and the Dean and MBA administration - gathering feedback from the class on academic issues, programme administration and logistics, questions and comments of general interest to the class or the programme; - meeting with the Dean and the MBA administrative staff on a regular basis to discuss class comments and issues; - communicating to the class the Dean’s conclusions, suggestions and solutions. 2/ Representing the MBA class during special events This may include meetings with journalists, accrediting bodies, the school’s administration, alumni association representatives as well as participation at events organized by the CCIP or other organizations. 3/ Enhancing the class social dynamics This includes the organisation of gatherings in order to facilitate the networking within the class. Class reps regularly meet the MBA Dean and Programme Director to make adjustments to the programme when deemed necessary. In order to promote exchange across the different tracks, three MBA class lunches are organised with the key players of the MBA adventure: Class Reps of all tracks, Dean of the MBA, Programme Director and Programme Managers. The MBA Class Representatives also sit on the MBA Academic Committee.

As member of the UN Global Compact since May 2005, ESCP Europe is committed to support a precautionary approach to environmental challenges; to undertake educational initiatives to promote greater environmental responsibility and to encourage the development and diffusion of environmentally friendly technologies. For this purpose, for each course, the MBA intranet provides readings three weeks in advance, and pedagogical material, one week in advance. I only print the documents of my choice. For some documents, professors may make particular recommendations, for example, requesting each participant to make notes from a downloaded or printed version. Do I have to prepare each lecture? Yes of course. Reading the chapters of the reference book provided by the MBA programme, selected by the professor as well as the articles posted on the MBA intranet. It is also recommended to complement this preparation by using the on-line modules available through the MBA intranet. How do I register to an elective? I am required to pass 12 electives chosen among 36. The list of electives has been provided to me at the start of the MBA programme. From Tegel Airport: www.berlin-airport.de By Bus No. X9 and S-Bahn S47 “Ring” Departure: every 10 minutes; approximately 30 minutes’ ride. The bus X9 takes you to “Jungfernheide” from where you can take the S-Bahn S42 or S47 to “Westend”. Then, it is only a 10 minutes’ walk to the ESCP Europe. You also can take the Bus No. 309 which departs every 20 minutes and brings you directly to the ESCP Europe (bus station: “Schlossparkklinik”, direction Pulsstraße). Fare: 2.10 € From Schönefeld Airport: The Express Bus “SXF 1“ brings you from Schönefeld Airport, Terminal A, to the S-Bahn station Südkreuz; the transfer takes 20 minutes.
