GREENFIELD HILL CONGREGATIONAL CHURCH

FAIRFIELD, CONNECTICUT

SEPTEMBER 30, 2018 9:00 & 10:30 A.M. SERVICES

We love kids! But sometimes services are too long for even the happiest child. So ... • For infants we have nursery care in the Church House, first floor. • For children from 3’s through 7th grade, we have a wonderful Church School program during our 9:00 hour!

• And if your kids get squirmy, the Church Parlor is a great place to hang out, and you can listen to the service over speakers! (through the double doors at front, or go around outside)

* Our Confession Prayer, said together:

Holy God,

we come to you in prayer

at the start of worship

to be honest with you and ourselves

in this prayer of confession.

We too often pray at points of panic,

in times of crisis,

when all else fails.

Then we forget you.

We too often pray for ourselves

but forget others; We too often pray for you to do something

but lack the will to do our part.

We will do better, even in prayer.

Amen. (silent prayers of confession)

Pastoral Prayer, with Scripture Luke 11

Deacon: One day Jesus was praying in a certain place. When

he finished, one of his disciples said to him,

Congregation: Lord, teach us to pray, just as John (the Baptist)

taught his disciples.

Deacon: Then Jesus said to them, “When you pray, say,

‘Our Father, who art in heaven, hallowed be thy

name...

Congregation: ... Thy Kingdom come, thy will be done on earth as

it is in heaven.

Deacon: ... Give us this day our daily bread...

Congregation: ... And forgive us our debts as we forgive our

debtors. Forgive us our trespasses, as we forgive

those who trespass against us. Forgive us our sins as

we forgive those who sin against us...

Deacon: And lead us not into temptation, but deliver us from

evil...

Together: For thine is the Kingdom

and the power

and the glory

forever and ever.

Deacon: ... So I say to you: ask and it shall be given to you;

seek and you shall find; knock and the door will be

opened to you. For everyone who asks, receives;

those who seek, find; and for those who knock, the

door will be opened.

Worship of God through Giving: (We give in many ways, by various means. Some give monthly, quarterly, yearly, credit card, by mail or automatic withdrawals. Yet it is still important to “present our offerings” on the altar as part of genuine worship, our way of giving thanks to God.)

CHURCH NOTES

WELCOME to worship at Greenfield Hill. Your presence adds so much to our church

life. Whether a new visitor or longtime member, whatever your age or background, you

bring the most unique gift to church – yourself. Thank you for joining yourself with us.

Visitors: We are glad you are with us today. Want to know more? Take a

bag home from our Visitors’ Table, just outside the front door! If you are

interested in joining this church, please just speak with Alida!

At our 9:00 a.m. service, you have been greeted by Deacon Jon Passmore and

our Junior Deacons Anna Ruppert and Olivia Savino. At our 10:30 a.m.

service, you have been greeted by Deacon Jon Passmore, Junior Deacons

Hannah Amendola and Mackenna Tormey, and our Junior Greeter Aidan

Power. Junior Deacons assisting with Church School are Peter Schwinn,

Georgia Sharpe, Charlie Simon, Hope Smith, and Will Stearns. Assisting in the

crib room today will be Elliot Schunk.

A note about children in worship: We love them! But if you’d prefer to

enjoy worship on your own, our Church Nursery for infants-toddlers is across

the street in the Church House. Special beepers/pagers are available to

parents so that they may be quietly contacted during the worship service if

their child misses them! If your child in worship becomes restless or unhappy,

please make use of the Parlor (through the double doors by the choir loft, or

head outside and through the side doors). There is a comfortable space there

for your child to play with toys and a speaker which carries the service!

“Fragments of a Lost Homeland: Remembering

Armenia” with Armen Marsoobian, Ph.D. Wednesday,

October 3, 7:30pm – 8:30pm (in the Sanctuary, with a

reception to follow), sponsored by our Adult Education

Board. Armenian Christians were shattered by the 1915

genocide at the hands of the Ottoman Turks. Not only

were thousands of lives lost but families were displaced

and the narrative threads that connected them to their own

past and homelands were forever severed. But two

generations gave voice to their experience in lengthy

written memoirs, in diaries and letters, and most unusually in photographs

and drawings. Their descendant, Armen Marsoobian uses all these resources

to tell their story and, in doing so, brings to life the pivotal and often violent

moments in Armenian and Ottoman history. Join us for an extraordinary

talk!
