INDONESIA 2012 WORLD STAMP CHAMPIONSHIP

DR YAU KHAI WENG, SINGAPORE World Stamp Championship Indonesia 2012 held in Jakarta from 18th June to 24th June was the third FIP World Stamp Championship and the first one held in Indonesia under the Patronage of FIP and the Auspices of FIAP. The exhibition was held at the Jakarta Convention Center, a mammoth and spacious exhibition venue located right in the heart of Jakarta and near a number of busy shopping malls. It is also linked to the official hotel, the Sultan Hotel, by a long underground walkway. This was a major plus point as it made it very convenient for the Jurors and National Commissioners to make their daily trips to the exhibition venue. Indonesia 2012 occupied two exhibition halls in the Jakarta Convention Center. Hall A had booths for stamp dealers and postal authorities while all the stamp exhibits were housed in Hall B. One unique feature of this stamp exhibition was the presence of more than 200 small business booths hawking souvenirs and a variety of local products and handicrafts originating from the far flung corners of the Indonesian islands. Indonesia 2012 had 513 competitive exhibits which took up more than 2500 frames. There was also the Court of Honour featuring important philatelic items of the world by courtesy of the FIP Grand Prix Club members, David Feldman Gallery and other distinguished philatelists. The International Jury team consisted of 47 members and 8 apprentice jurors with Mr Tay Peng Hian RDP as the Honorary President and Mr Suwito Harsono as the President. The first Jury and Expert Group meeting was held in the afternoon of 17th June. However judging only commenced on the next day because there was a delay in the mounting of exhibits which was caused by an unforeseen problem with the frames. Despite the time constrain, I am happy to report that the Jury team was able to complete the work within the given dateline! The Jury awarded a total of 20 Large Gold medals and 85 Gold medals as they were impressed by the overall high standard of the exhibits on display. On 18th June there was a Welcome Dinner with the theme “Bridging to the World of Peace through Stamps”. It was held at the Jimbaran Restaurant Ancol in North Jakarta. A convoy of 5 huge buses carried all the delegates from the Sultan Hotel in South Jakarta through the heavy evening traffic ……but we had the privilege of a police escort all the way there! At Ancol we were treated to a delightful buffet of local dishes accompanied by songs and dances. All the guests were presented with a bamboo musical instrument (angklung) and we all made music with the help of a charming conductor on the stage – an unforgettable evening for everyone! Thailand hosted a Thai Night party on 21st June to promote their FIP World Stamp Exhibition to be held in Bangkok next year. All the guests were presented with a souvenir gift bag and were served a very tempting buffet of exotic Thai cuisine. We were also entertained with Thai cultural dances and music, luring us to visit Thailand in 2013. There was a city tour organized for all the delegates on 22nd June. Again, a convoy of 7 huge buses transported us to the Kota Tua (Old Town) area of Jakarta. We were treated to a lunch at the Museum Seni Rupa dan Keramik (Museum of Fine Art and Ceramics) by the governor of the city. Souvenir medals were given out to the Jury members and the National Commissioners. We broke up into smaller groups for guided tours to the Wayang Museum (Traditional Puppetry Museum) and the Museum Sejarah Jakarta (Jakarta History Museum). We returned to the hotel with an improved knowledge about the city of Jakarta. The Palmares was held in the evening of 22nd June at the Golden Ballroom of the Sultan Hotel. We were treated to a sumptuous buffet of local Indonesian cuisine. Without doubt, the highlight of the evening was the revelation of the winner of the World Stamp Championship 2012. My congratulations to Everaldo Santos on his exhibit “Postal History of Brazil 1606-1877”. The Grand Prix d’Exposition was awarded to Steven Walske for his exhibit “Heart of the West: San Francisco as a Postal Hub from 1849-1864”. The Best of National Exhibit went to Arjan H.Lalwani for “Netherlands Indies Classic Period” while the Best of Youth exhibit went to Luo Yating for “Sails”. It was a tiring but exciting trip for my wife and me. What impressed us most were the ever-ready broad smiles and warm hospitality shown by the Organizing Committee, the numerous volunteers, the stall-keepers of the souvenir and handicraft booths as well as the ordinary man in the street! My congratulations to the Organizing Committee of World Championship Indonesia 2012 for their hard work and resultant success.

THOUGHTS ON THE IMPORTANCE OF THE CRITIQUE SESSION MALCOLM GROOM, AUSTRALIA

The critique session at National and FIAP exhibitions is a vital part of the feedback process whereby Jury members can encourage and assist Exhibitors to improve their exhibits and improve the overall standard of exhibiting at FIAP level. The process also ensures jury members improve their judging skills. For those not familiar with the Critique session it is usually held towards the end of an Exhibition after the results have been posted on the frames and is mandatory for all members of the Jury at that Exhibition to attend. While it cannot be made a mandatory requirement for other qualified jury not on that jury or for the Exhibitors it is an educational opportunity for both those groups who want to learn and improve their exhibiting and judging skills. The Critique session provides an opportunity for the Chairman of the Jury to make general comments about the judging and to introduce each Jury member and the areas in which they judged. Each Team leader can make general comments about their area and Exhibitors are free to ask questions about the judging process. It works best if individual exhibitors keep questions about their own exhibit until any discussion with the jury team who judged their exhibit so as to make the Critique session more time efficient and avoid any potential embarrassment for individuals involved. Similarly, it is best to avoid questions about other individual exhibits during this session. The key benefits to all involved are:

Jury members are made known to the Exhibitors who can then meet with them individually at their frames. Jury members focus on their jury work in the knowledge that they are going to need to meet with some exhibitors to

speak about the judging assessment. All can gain new information and learn about exhibiting and judging from the general discussion that takes place.

Individual critiques between the exhibitor and the responsible judging team are equally important and follow on from the general Critique session. These are an opportunity to focus on the details of the jury assessment and have benefits for both parties. When you consider the financial outlay that the exhibitor has made in terms of frame fees, exhibit insurance and travel costs to attend the Exhibition it is just a small return for their efforts to be able to receive good feedback to enable them to improve their result. As with all advice we give to others, jury members need to ensure they offer encouragement as well as critical advice to each exhibitor. Consider the time and effort each person has invested in their exhibit and that it in most cases the exhibit will represent a heartfelt passion. They do not want a simple criticism of any weaknesses and will be far more receptive to advice if they receive a balanced critique of encouragement, recognition of the good points as well as comments on where they can improve in the eyes of the jury team. The jury team giving the Critique should also try and focus on the areas where the greatest improvement is possible. It is of limited value to spend a lot of time discussing Presentation if the exhibit has already achieved 4 points out of a possible 5 when they may have only been awarded 25 out of 35 for Knowledge. For no more outlay of funds but some good advice from the judges on how to improve their Knowledge they could gain 5 more marks and another medal level. It is not very helpful if the only comments they receive are “Get more material” even if this may be apparent. They probably already know that but are seeking good advice on Treatment and how to demonstrate better Knowledge in their pages. The Exhibitor is not the only person to gain from the Individual Critique. Knowing that they have to meet with some Exhibitors individually at the frames will focus the Jury members’ minds on what they are going to offer as advice and improve their judging application. We can all benefit knowing that we have assisted an Exhibitor attain a better medal in future through the considered advice we gave at a critique during an earlier Exhibition. Though a good critique we are all doing something to improve our hobby. A bad critique has been known to lose an exhibitor to the hobby forever. Finally, there are some skills which the Judge needs to practice to ensure the individual critique session is effective for all. Good time management is essential to ensure all those attending are given a good hearing. This needs to be borne in mind by exhibitors as well and consideration should be given to those still waiting for their critique discussion by not dominating the judge’s time. It may sometimes be better to arrange for a copy of an exhibit to be sent to the judge for a more considered view to be expressed after the Exhibition if the judge and exhibitor are mutually agreeable to the idea. It is also important to ascertain whether the exhibitor is happy to have a group listening into the discussion they are having with the judge (s) or would prefer a one on one discussion. We can all benefit Judges and Exhibitors alike, from good Critique sessions and it will all help attract more exhibitors to our hobby which we enjoy so much. It is the prerogative of the Exhibitor whether they attend a critique session or not but I would encourage all to do so as they will learn a great deal from the experience and improve their marks at future Exhibitions if they listen carefully to what is said. *******************************************************************************************************

FEDERATION OF INTER-ASIAN PHILATELY EXECUTIVE COMMITTEE MEETING KUALA LUMPUR, MALAYSIA ON 27 APRIL 2012

HOWARD GREEN RDPSA, PHILATELIC FEDERATION OF SOUTH AFRICA

I have recently returned from a trip to Malaysia to attend the FIAP Executive Committee Meeting. My journey commenced on 25 April in Johannesburg, South Africa on a 10½ hour flight to Singapore. I spent 1½ hours in transit in Singapore followed by a short 55 minute flight on 26 April to Kuala Lumpur International Airport (KLIA). Thereafter we took the 28 minute express train trip to Kuala Lumpur Central where we were met by a member of the Philatelic Society of Malaysia (PSM), who transported us to the comfortable Gardens Hotel. The hotel is part of a large retail complex with many up-market stores. On the first evening we experienced Malaysian hospitality at one of their informal restaurants where we ate local fare amidst the residents of Kuala Lumpur. After breakfast on 27 April the Executive Committee members were transported to the Malaysian Communications and Multimedia Commission (MCMC) headquarter in Cyberjaya, about an hour from Kuala Lumpur. The FIAP Executive Committee meeting was held in the MCMC boardroom. Mr. Mak Kok Cheong, Senior Vice-President of PSM, delivered the welcome speech, followed by Y. Bhg. Dato’ Jailani Johari, Chief Officer, Industry Regulation and Supervision of the MCMC. Mr. Surajit Gongvatana, President of FIAP, opened the Executive Committee meeting. During the meeting exhibition reports from Indonesia 2012 and UAE 2012 were discussed. All is progressing well in Jakarta with a total of 2522 frames being exhibited. UAE 2012 will be a FIAP International Exhibition during the last week of November 2012. Mr. Michael has been appointed FIAP Co-ordinator and there will also be a FIAP Exco meeting during the exhibition. The following exhibition discussed was Australia 2013 with the deadline for submission of entries extended to 31 August 2012. The height of album pages was discussed and we were assured that A4 pages can be comfortably accommodated except for the top rows of each frame. However, the Organising Committee will make a plan to differently mount the top rows of pages without causing any damage. All other matters regarding the exhibition are progressing according to programme. The next Confirmed exhibition was Thailand 2013, where unfortunately the Open Class will not be accommodated due to space constraints. All other exhibitions on the programme are awaiting final confirmation from the respective countries. Among other matters discussed were the FIP Congress and the various Commission Bureau members to be elected at Jakarta. After lunch, hosted by the MCMC Chairman, we were taken to a Putrajaya/Cyberjaya city tour. It was very interesting to observe the different architectural designs of the various Government buildings, apparently accommodating in excess of 50,000 staff members. The King’s Palace and the magnificent mosque alongside were highlights of the visit. On our way back to the Gardens Hotel we visited the Old National Palace where ‘My King’ Exhibition was on display. The exhibition has a very important philatelic significance with the history of the former Malayan States being incorporated into the Federation of Malaya in 1948 and subsequently into the Federation of Malaysia in 1963. The activities of the day were concluded with a dinner hosted by the President of the Philatelic Society of Malaysia. We particularly wish to thank the following members of the PSM for their efficiency and friendly hospitality – Messrs. Mak Kok Cheong, Boey Ken Khoon, V. Senthinathan, S. Subramaniam and Tan Chee Hui. We hope that the PSM will arrange an international exhibition in the not too distant future. In conclusion I personally was impressed by the helpful and courteous treatment by all in Malaysia, including the Immigration and Customs personnel at KLIA Airport and also by the efficient KLIA express taking us to the centre of Kuala Lumpur.
