very late and unfavorable spring under favorable weather during the month of Au gust crops are maturing rapidly and while they are late unless we have early frosts the prospects are excellent for a good crop of corn and tobacco Threshing of all grain is about completed The yield of wheat was small averaging ten bushels to the acre for the State the quality being good The prospect for a crop of corn is 88 per cent and the condition of this crop is 01 per cent Fall plowing has progressed nicely in- most sections and the indications are that the usual average of wheat will be sown Some tobacco has been cut and on sticks but the most of it is still growing and late plnitings are still in danger of early frosts Meadows have yielded an average crop of hay and it has been saved as a rule in good condition Pastures have been goodand all live stock is in fine shape Hogs are reported scarce and high in some sections Labor scarce and wages high all o ver the State Paper Will Soon Bt Soaring High The International Paper Com pany is buying all the print pa per mills in the Northwest and will combine them All of the mills in the East have already been combined It is predicted that within twelve months the price of paper will advance to six cents per pound That will cause the disappearance of penny pa- pers and an increase in subscrip ¬ tion rates of every paper in the United States The dollar week ¬ lies will all have to raise to 1 50 or 2 00 a year or cut down the size of their papers We do not know how soon it will come but it is not far off Powell Man Nominated H G Garrett has been nom- inated ¬ by the Republicans of Clark county for Representative Mr Garrett very creditably rep ¬ resented this district iu the Leg ¬ islature a few years ago and is a business man of admirable traits If any Republican on earth is de ¬ serving of recognition at the hands of the masses it is Green Garrett and somehow it seems to us That he is very awkwarkly situated politically anyway i State Administration Indorsed The Temperance Committee of the State Conference of the Methodist church indorsed the State administration for its stand on the liquor question and de- manding ¬ of all candidates for of ¬ fice an unqualified opposition to the licensed saloon All preach ¬ era and members of the church are asked to abstain from the use of tobacco and their report rec ¬ ommends the use of unfermeut ed wine for the Lords Supper The Republicans will hold a- mass convention at Stanton Sat ¬ urday to instruct for candidate for Representative The district convention will be held at Irvine Hie20 This is Powells time to name the candidate Editor jB Blackburn and Dr A T Knox are candidates forthe nom ¬ nation J I end rick at Stanton J K Hendrick Democratic nominee for Attorney General made a speech at the courthouse in Stanton in behalf of his candi- dacy ¬ to a large audience of Dem ¬ ocrats and Republicans His ar ¬ gument was convincing on the trust question Ho spoke highly of the condition of State affairs commending the officials for their discreet and prudent man- agement ¬ Conference Appointments At the Methodist Conference in session at Frankfort for the
