    TGAAround the parishes

On Sunday June 1st at 10 am, the Parish of Heyfield had a joint Parish Service at their branch church of St Matthew Tinamba.

There we had a relaxed and joyful service where we gave thanks for the important local dairy and wine industries.

We specifically blessed some wonderful cheese supplied by international award-winning cheese producer, Maffra Cheese at Tinamba, and some delicious wines supplied by Narkoojee Wines at Glengarry.

It was a wonderful, colourful service, and afterwards those attending universally enjoyed tasting the three different cheeses and three wines together with some other nibblies and sandwiches.

This was our second such annual blessing of our wine and cheese produce and we hope it can continue with the generosity of our local cheese and wine makers.

The Reverend David Head is Priest-in-Charge, Heyfield.

I need to say at the outset that I feel a little angry with God about this. Bishop John was one of the most well-rounded and integrated Christian men as well as one of the best bishops that I have worked with.

He had a unique contribution to the Church of God in Australia, and especially Gippsland. He was a courageous advocate for those who did not have a voice the poor and marginalised.

He quickly rose to speak on their behalf, which did not always make him popular to the status quo but then perhaps he was imitating someone else who lived and died 2,000 years ago, who also ruffled some feathers.

As to why this happened from a theological perspective I have no easy or trite answer to that question. We live in a world where things go wrong and as such Christians join in on the sufferings of this world.

I have often said to folk if Christianity was an insurance policy against anything bad happening, then everyone would be a Christian. Having said that, my emotions are mixed. I dont understand why this happened. I trust myself again to God who asks us to be a pilgrim people and to walk with him into the unknown. Personally, I will miss his support of me, his friendship and his commitment to the Gippsland people and especially to my small patch of it at Neerim South.

If I had to summarise my observation of his life, it would be that he was a devoted husband, father and a great lover of people. Words such as grace, generosity, compassion, kindness and magnanimity of spirit come flooding into my mind.

His personal acceptance and treatment of me was characterised by a generosity of spirit that reminds me of the father in the story of the prodigal. His theology was deeply grounded in redemption and restoration in Christ, and characterised in practical terms by generosity, grace and a commitment to justice and the value of every person in the sight of God.

In conclusion, in the midst of the shock and grief, of which anger is a natural part, I am comforted that Bishop John was a man of great faith whose Christian convictions had shaped his adult life. As such he believed in the resurrection from the dead, and would want us all to find comfort in our Christian hope that this world is a transitory one and that our real lives as Christians are hid in Christ. Heaven is our real home; our Christian hope which fuels our lives is that we will enjoy it in the presence of Christ and all the faithful who have gone ahead of us.

Bishop Johns concern now would be for his wife Jan and his children Jessica, Paul and Lisa, as well as his parents and wider family. So I ask you to pray for his family, his friends and our diocese in the days ahead.

    TheRev.JohnBattisrectoratNeerimSouth.
