DECEMBER IBM 192 / SAM 72 JOINT CLUB MEETING On December 5, 2012, IBM 192 and SAM 72 held their annual joint holiday meeting. The theme for this evening’s entertainment was Gotcha Magic. Up first was Bill Edgar who showed us a variation of Jim Siski’s Mixed Symbols where 5 playing cards with pictures of body parts where used to show how the performer could read the mind of the spectator by predicting which picture he or she was thinking of. Next up Don Banks performed a card trick he called Shooting Blanks in which 4 blank playing cards were used to magically print a Queen of Hearts, the “dream girl,” several times. The Queen proved to be rather evasive, appearing and disappearing in various locations, or transforming into a blank card again. Bill Devon was up next and performed his version of the traditional Die Box, in which a large wooden die slid from side to side in the box and then magically vanished altogether only to show up in Bill’s hat! JOINT MEETING (Continued from Page 1)Next Joe Chez performed Ribbon Fantastic, an illusion built by Bill Edgar in which a ribbon is threaded through wholes in a solid sheet of clear plastic but the magician magically pulls the sheet out of its holder , thus penetrating the ribbon shackles that bound it.

Dale Lorzo next showed us how to change silk handkerchiefs into a large Santa hank for Christmas.

Harry Mozzman performed Three Bell Monte, a variation on the Three Card Monte, using Christmas bells. One bell rang while the other two did not. No matter which bell was picked by the audience, it wouldn’t ring. Only the one picked up by the magician would jiggle a tune.

Last up, Tom Allen performed Sneeze in which a silk was magically produced while pretending to sneeze. The silk proved to be the perfect ending to the evening with the message that said Merry Xmas printed on it!

pour enough liquor to keep management happy! Scotty created his magic with two goals in mind: To totally devastate and completely entertain an audience.

It is with a heavy heart that I am passing on the very sad news that Scotty York is now in a Hospice facility in Northern Virginia and is near the end of his time with us. He was taken to a hospital about a week before Christmas 2012 and has apparently suffered a series on mini strokes. He is not able to speak and is in a near coma. His family are with him.

To this news Jon Racherbaumer posted on Genii Forum: “Among so many other things, Scotty was a "connector" and "catalyst" that created a synergistic effect in what was once called "the underground" --which happened during a time when most of the good stuff was relatively sub rosa. Yet when this semi-secret "magic" eventually emerged or leaked out into the mainstream it was exciting, if not inspiring. And it served to make those desiring to make a difference to try harder, practice more, think more deeply, and add something lasting to our art. Needless to say, there was also lots of smoke and mirrors, fire and ice, rumors and rousting. But in the end, there is the work that has survived and the perpetuators that are still whinnying with us. My sadness is deep. My condolences to all concerned.”

SAD NEWS ABOUT SCOTTY YORK

Scotty York, known as "The Silver Fox", was an Engineer by trade who performed close-up magic as a bartender at Brook Farm Inn of Magic in Silver Spring, Maryland and later at the Inn of Magic in Wheaton, Maryland. Over the years, Scotty won international acclaim as one of the most clever creators of original close-up magic effects and routines, and is considered a world-class performer. He performed hundreds of tricks each night before packed audiences and still manages to
