Spring and summer are upon us and I think I speak for a lot of people when I say that I am excited for the warm weather and events throughout Gahanna. Every year the Gahanna Parks & Recre-ation Department has a full schedule of activities and events for everyone to enjoy ranging from concerts, movies, camps, festivals and educational classes. This season is no different.

As you look through this issue of the Gateway you will see many of the same popular events you have come to expect but you might also notice a few changes. We have spent a considerable amount of time working to create a schedule of events and activities that cater to a wide variety of interests, but also take in account the economic realities we face as a city. Our goal is always to strive for the best programming possible within our financial means.

One exciting change is ‘Second Saturday’ at Creekside Park and Plaza. By combining some events and resources, the second Saturday of each month will be an exciting day of events that will appeal to a broader audience. Second Saturdays will cap off with a concert, movie or OSU tailgate event.

Occasionally we get feedback that some events in Creekside may only be for adults while other events are aimed at kids or families. The Second Saturday programming gave us the opportunity to provide a wider variety of activities and events throughout the day. In short, there is something for everyone and our goal is that these Second Saturdays will continue to develop a greater sense of community.

Some of the most popular events at Creekside last year were the movie nights on the big screen, or ‘Classics on the Creek’. So many people enjoyed watching movies under the stars, and this year we will offer family favorites like Chicken Run, Top Gun, and Pirates of the Caribbean (pirate costumes not required). And what would summer programming be without a concert series at Creekside Plaza and Friendship Park? Some of the acts scheduled to perform this year include Chris Logsdon, Soul Kitch’n and a local favorite, The Reaganomics, just to name a few.

One of the most exciting events of the year for Gahanna is the Annual Creekside Blues & Jazz Festival, again held June 18, 19, and 20th. The Creekside Blues & Jazz Festival is a three-day musical celebration featuring hundreds of musicians, delicious cuisine, regional artisans, amusement rides and family activities. Some may not know that this event started over ten years ago as a one-day dedication of Gahanna’s new Creekside Park area and an important step forward for Olde Gahan-na’s revitalization. The Creekside Blues & Jazz Festival has experienced unprecedented growth in attendance and has truly become more than just a celebration of music, food and fun; it has become a premiere family summer event for people from all over Ohio.

Looking back at the history of the Creekside District, we can be proud of how far we have come. This area has grown from an underused, underdeveloped area and has become not only a great place for businesses, but the heart of our community. Creekside Park has become a destination for families, nature lovers and events throughout the year. The plaza is host to so many city and community events such as the Olde Gahanna Farmer’s Market, Paws in the Plaza and a concert series that we should all be proud of.

We are excited about our spring and summer event schedule and we hope you are as well. There is so much to do and see in Gahanna, so take some time and discover what we have to to offer right here in your hometown. To stay updated on events and activities I encourage you to visit Gahanna.gov, contact your staff here at City Hall, and subscribe to our new City e-newsletter by sending a quick email to [email protected]. As always we welcome your feedback and ideas. Have a fun and safe spring and summer in Gahanna! Warmest Regards,

About the Greater Columbus Swim Team Organization (GCSTO)

GCSTO is one of the most progressive and widely recognized swimming programs in the mid-west. The team has been recognized by USA Swimming as a “Bronze Medal” club for its comparative performance in athletic performance to other clubs across the country. It is the only club in central Ohio to receive such recognition. The team has also achieved Level 3 status within USA Swimming’s Club Recognition Program for excellence in club administration and program development and was one of the top 100 clubs in the country last year according to the Toyota Virtual Club Championships. It’s swimming lesson program was chosen as central Ohio’s #1 lesson program in 2009 Nickelodeon’s Parent’s Pick Awards recently and was chosen by the USA Swimming Foundation as a local partner in their national Make A Splash Program here in central Ohio. Here is some more information on the programs that GCSTO will offer to Gahanna residents this spring and summer.

Gahanna Swimming Pool Sea Lions - Summer Swim & Dive Teams

GCSTO will assist with the Gahanna Sea Lions Summer League Team by helping to administer the club, educate and manage the coaches and more. The Sea Lions compete in the GCSL summer league with dual meets on Wednesday nights. Both swimming and springboard diving is offered through the Sea Lions and this is a fantastic way for children to get introduced into the sport of swimming in a fun and rewarding environment that doesn’t require a long-term commitment.

For information and pricing, contact Janice Clegg at [email protected] or Colleen Havens at [email protected].

Group Competitive Swim Team

GCSTO offers competitive instruction and practice throughout the spring and summer for interested athletes between the ages of 6 and 19. The program offers an incredible coach to swimmer ratio, creative programming, dry land strength and conditioning development, video analysis and more. Athletes wishing to pursue year around swimming or simply athletes wishing to get in shape for their summer league swim teams are welcomed to join the team. Even though this team has developed more world ranked athletes than all other teams combined in central Ohio, you will be pleasantly surprised at the manner in which this success is achieved. Athletes are developed at their own level and their own speed and are carefully guided through the program. Practices are held at Colum-bus Academy, St. Charles Preparatory School and the Concourse Hotel throughout the spring. During the summer, the team practices at the Gahanna Swimming Pool. More information can be found on the team’s web site at www.gcsto.com under the “Swim Team Information” tab. Contact Steve Nye at 614-478-5445 or [email protected] for information.

Group Novice Recreational Team

GCSTO offers competitive instruction and practice throughout the spring and summer for interested athletes between the ages of 6 & 12 in a recreational type format of 1-3 practices per week within the team’s NOVICE & POLAR BEAR SELECT programs. These program offer everything that the team has to offer but in an even more relaxed environment. Practices are held at Columbus Academy, St. Charles Preparatory School and the Concourse Hotel throughout the spring. More information can be found on the team’s web site at www.gcsto.com under the “Swim Team Information” tab. Contact Steve Nye at 614-478-5445 or [email protected] for more information.

Teen Swim-Fit Recreational ProgramGreater Columbus’ Swim Fit Program for teens, age 12-18, is specifi cally designed for those who do NOT want to be part of a competitive team but who want to be able to come together with other teens to work on their conditioning levels and work on all aspects of personal fi tness under the eyes of a professional. This program incorporates an equal mix of dry land and water exercise routines to help develop cardiovascular endurance, muscular endur-ance and core body strength for those involved with the program in a fun and challenging environment. Participants will also be given informa-tion on topics that will help them develop their per-sonal health, fi tness and welfare! Athletes may join this ongoing program any time and spring classes are operating now. More information can be found on the team’s web site at www.gcsto.com under the “Teen & Family Swim Fit Programs” tab. Contact Erin Harris at 614-582-2597 or [email protected] for more information.
