If you have an established garden, you may only want to commit to just a Pollinator Patch. So here are some suggestions for additions to tuck in somewhere: Shrubs: Contrary as to what you might expect, according to some sources, if you are looking for a shrub to tuck into a corner, do not plant a Butterfly Bush. This shrub does attract butterflies with its nec- tar but does not supply the larva with any food. In addition, it is a non-native species from Asia, spreads easily and has no natural predators. It out competes native plants. Native alternatives to this shrub that offer both pollen and nectar include: Elderberry Sambucus nigra; Snowberry Symphoricarpus alba and Native spireas; Spirea tor- mentosa, Spirea alba although these natives may be more difficult to find. Herbaceous: Choose plants for all three seasons: Early Season: White False Indigo Baptisia alba – late April – July and Golden Alexanders zizia anrea, zizia aptera Mid Season: Bee Balm Monarda spp. June – July; Purple Coneflower Echinacea purpurea - June – August Late Season: Brown/black-eyed susans Rudbeckia spp. June – Oct, Asters – June – October. ontarionature.org/pollinators Submitted by Jorie Tuck A Message From Your Garden Club Pollinator Pals

Pelham Home & Garden Show

Many Pelham Garden Club members enjoyed setting up and talking to the visitors at the Pelham Home & Garden Show, April 21, 22 & 23. There were plants and garden-related crafts by members for sale which helped to offset the cost of the booth.

MAY WAS A BUSY MONTH FOR PELHAM GARDEN CLUB

Here are some photos of the work we did with the Beaver group at Fonthill United Church, May 10. Carol, Barb, Sandra and me. They made the wooden planter boxes and we helped them plant the flowers. It was fun working with the next generation of gardeners. Trish Rybski

We had a booth at the Farmers' Market May 18 but it was really windy so we couldn't use our sign. Here is Jorie, Lois and Carol. We held a raffle, for the salad bowl planter and gave away seeds donated by Linda Crago of Tree and Twig Farm. Trish Rybski

May 20, Annual Plant, Lawn and Bake SaleMany members helped to make this year's sale successful and fun. The results are: Plant Sale: $599.65, Yard Sale: $55.05 and Bake Sale: $228.50 for a total of $883.20.

“I would like to thank the Pelham Garden Club for the lovely herb garden which I won at our recent Home Show display. Since I

cook with herbs and have a herb garden outside my kitchen door, it will be put to good use.”

Trish Rybski

In 2016, the Pelham Garden Club purchased Canada Celebration Tulip bulbs in bulk and made them available to the members and their friends and families at cost.

Happy Birthday,Canada!
