Rust and corrosion free, Haas Door CA garage doors come with 28 specialty glass options, four anodized color options, 10 painted finish options, and 14 woodgrain color options. The garage doors can also be ordered with a custom- matched color or powder coating. “We believe that garage doors should stand out on a structure while simultaneously complementing the building’s overall design,” says Jeffrey Nofziger, president of Haas Door. “This series of garage doors has been specifically designed to add style and dependability to commercial projects.” The CA-315 larger glass area with heavy-duty outer frame garage door gives the owner a heavy-duty rail with a smaller center stile to offer more glass. With this line, there are also more color choices and larger size options than with the existing model, CA-110. The thicker rail design of the CA-320 heavy-duty frame garage door provides the most flexibility for commercial project needs. This door has the largest door size maximums, the most color options, wood grain finishes, and the most options, including custom-made pass doors. “With each of these product lines, you can also request a heavier glass/glazing option,” says Nofziger. “While 1/8” and 3/16” glass/glazing are the standard for the CA series, we also offer the CAi series with ¼” or ½” glass/glazing materials. Specialty glass options are available in both insulated and non-insulated options to provide a wide variety of looks.” Haas Door’s Commercial Aluminum Series has many choices, from anodized to painted to woodgrain to custom color

LAST MONTH'S CASE & ANSWER

NOTICE TO CASE READERS:All business cases in the Garage

Door News involve fictitious companies facing realistic business

problems.

The Case PageCase 28-4 Answer:Case 28-4: Extending the Brand

Past issues of The Garage Door News are available at www.garagedoornews.com

GDN Doors was launched in 1989 by Bill, a door installer who had been laid off in a recession. At the time, he had only been installing for two years, so he was competent, but far from an expert door technician. He also had little cash to start up a company. This meant that he had to really hustle. It also meant that he needed to worry about marketing and sales while keeping a keen eye on cash flow and profitability. Early in the life of the company, Bill realized that he couldn’t afford the time or money to go back and fix problems. So he quickly, and somewhat unintentionally, developed the company slogan: “We do it right the first time.” Over the years, the company slowly grew. Bill hired people who thought like him, and he dedicated moderate amounts of money to advertising. Between the modest advertising and a dedication to quality work, GDN Doors gradually became known in the market. In fact, on the commercial side, Bill’s company was generally seen as the preferred supplier, though not the cheapest. In the residential garage door market, GDN Doors was typically the most frequently mentioned garage door company name. At 55, Bill is ready for a new challenge. He thinks that his business model – the focus on quality – is transferable to other businesses. His initial thoughts were that the brand had the easiest potential to extend in related industries. How should Bill begin exploring options?

This case identifies two issues that are important to the success of a business. The first deals with brand building. The second focuses on brand extension. While the case is short, it does an excellent job of demonstrating what it takes to truly build a brand that has meaning in the marketplace. It wasn’t the creation of a slogan that could be used in ads. It was the owner’s commitment to quality that was the foundation of the brand. It influenced the people he hired and the company slogan emerged out of the real operations of the company. It was supported with advertising, but it was the years of action that really strengthened the brand. It was the sum of all actions that made the brand. As Bill begins to explore new business opportunities, he is really considering brand extensions. Brand extension is when the brand value and meaning associated with one product is used to quickly gain acceptance for another product. Typically this concept is used with new product launches, but it can also be used when one company buys another. In this case, Bill needs to understand the true meaning of the GDN Doors brand and then look at businesses that would benefit from that meaning. So, for example, if the brand is understood by the community as representing “quality local service,” then he should explore businesses that have potential, but would benefit from quick association with “quality local service.”

Case 28-5: Forecasting Growth Though the company had been in business for many years, the past few years had seen the strongest sales for GDN Doors. The company, which focused exclusively on commercial/industrial installations and service, had experienced strong growth. The company had seen revenues and profits grow. Bill, the owner and general manager of GDN Doors, had to acknowledge that the sales growth

did not come from gaining market share. Instead, the economy was strong enough to let the full market grow. This meant that one of the key issues for GDN Doors and their competitors had been the availability of labor – skilled or ready to be trained. Most recent decisions had been based on the expectation that the economy will continue to grow at the current rate. The key concern at this point, for Bill, is whether to

continue expecting a growing economy or whether he should start to set up his strategy as if the overall market could be stable for the next few years. This would impact his intentions to hire and train new installers. It would also have implications for his pricing decisions over the next six months – especially because many of his large projects required bids that would actually impact installations months later.

Bill is not actually pessimistic about the economy. He just wants to avoid being the type of manager who assumes that the economy will maintain its current pattern. What advice do you have for Bill?

"The customizable opportunities for these commercial garage doors go far deeper than the surface,” says Nofziger. “We offer a wide selection of options including exhaust ports, car wash cutouts, security bars, spring bumpers, high cycle springs and rollers, top header seals and even cam safety devices. These impressive garage doors can be custom created to meet the exact needs of any commercial project."

Popular Blogger and DIYer Completes Custom Workshop with Wayne Dalton Garage Doors

TEXAS - Texas-based blogger and DIYer, April Wilkerson, got her start in 2013 when she purchased her first power tool and set out to hand-make the stylish furniture she wanted for her home but could not afford. Fast forward six years, Wilkerson is a staple in the DIY building community with more than a million followers who actively track her projects and the products she recommends. Recently, Wilkerson chose Wayne Dalton’s first-ever Classic Steel Model 8300 garage doors with the all-window door option to complete the 3,000 square-foot barn-style workshop she was building in the backyard of her new home in the scenic Texas Hill Country near San Antonio, a big move from Fort Worth and the 600 square-foot workshop she outgrew. “As someone who has built a reputation on producing high-quality works of art for her home through skilled labor, April is no stranger to working with heavy machinery. As recommended by our team, April allowed

us to step in and provide her with exceptional professional service to install her new garage doors,” said Wayne Dalton Senior Brand Manager Sarah Schram. “Utilizing garage doors in place of a traditional wall has many benefits. April has access to ample amounts of light while in her workshop, which is especially important when filming. The doors are wide enough to move large projects in and out of the space with ease and on a good day a breeze can be let in for maximum comfort.” Installed by Wayne Dalton dealer Hollywood-Crawford Door Co., the residential Model 8300 garage doors with the all-window door option have the look of an Aluminum Full-View garage door with many of the same benefits of insulated steel. Amongst Wayne Dalton’s best-insulated doors, Model 8300 is durably made with two layers of steel surrounding a thick layer of foamed-in-place polyurethane insulation.

DoorKing Introduces 900 MHz Access ControlCALIFORNIA - DoorKing has introduced 900 MHz wireless access control products for its 1830 Series of Telephone Entry and Access Control Systems. The company notes that the 900 MHz systems allow dealers to add access points easily and inexpensively just about anywhere access control is needed on a property. Richard Sedivy, DoorKing’s Director of Marketing said, “Wireless access control is extremely popular because of the cost savings it provides. Hard wired systems require conduit and wire runs which are very expensive, especially if the runs are lengthy, outdoors or have to cross sidewalks or roadways.” Sedivy added, “Installation is easy, simply add a Base Station to a DKS 1830 Series Access Control System, and a Remote Station (up to 48 of them) to a DKS Access Device

and the wireless connection is made seamlessly. We even have a Repeater for those hard-to-reach remote sites, doubling the wireless range. Best of all, the 900 MHz product uses LoRa technology which offers longer ranges, low

power consumption and secure data transmission.” The company also notes that the 900 MHz products are backwards compatible and can be added to any DKS 1830 Series sys-tem up to 10 years old.

BEA Introduces Virtual Gate LoopPENNSYLVANIA – In January, BEA introduced the LZR-H100, a laser-based time-of-flight sensor designed for gate and barrier ap-plications. The unit provides four laser-based curtains that offer a 3-dimensional detection zone for object detection. The detection cur-tains are designed to be alternatives to induction loops and are housed in a NEMA 4 rated enclosure. “We consider this to be a virtual loop,” explains Mark

Bouchard, strategic field support spe-cialist for BEA. “It achieves all of the access functions of a traditional loop without having to cut in a loop. It is also more easily serviceable and re-placeable.” This, notes Bouchard, is par-

ticularly important for installations where cutting ground for loops is expensive or prohibited. The LZR-H100 system has the ability to detect a ve-hicle’s trajectory dur-ing approach and de-parture. The system has a maximum detec-tion field of 32’ x 32'.

Warren Door Introduces the ECON-1500 Rubber Door

OHIO – Warren Door launched the ECON-1500 rubber door at the recent Door Expo in Indianapolis. The new door uses traditional rolling steel door structures to house a high-speed rubber door to achieve a lower price point. “By using our existing door production materials and processes, we are able to keep door prices down,” notes Kevin Waldron, Sales Engineer. “This new design is approximately 25% cheaper than a similar rubber door,” adds Joseph Aubel, Vice-President. Designed for both interior and exterior use, the custom-built doors are available in low headroom and springless assemblies. The ECON-1500 is available in standard sizes up to 12’ x 12’. The full assembly includes heavy duty mounting angles with industrial grade, roll-formed U-channels and a 24 ga hood, and a brush header seal. The door uses a 1/8” thick, 2-ply black matte finish with double-sided beveled windlocks. All doors are assembled in the US.

New Amarr Quiet Door Option Reduces Operation NoiseNORTH CAROLINA - Entrematic has introduced a new Quiet Door option that reduces the door operation noise on residential steel doors by up to 38 percent. The company notes that this is the equivalent of going from the sound of a vacuum cleaner to the sound of a running shower. The Quiet Door solution consists of noise-dampening nylon sleeves that slide over the roller stem in the roller carrier and are secured with push nuts. The nylon sleeves can be easily installed over all types of roller stems. Sleeves can be doubled on long stem rollers for wind load applications. “In recent years, the operation of residential garage doors opening systems has become significantly quieter,” Entrematic vice president of marketing Vickie Lents said. “With quieter opening systems, the sound made by opening and closing steel doors became more noticeable.” “Our new Amarr Quiet Door system is the perfect solution to create incredibly quiet steel door operation,” Lents added.

“Dealers can order the Quiet Door option with complete doors in Amarr Express and OnSite or in bulk to retrofit existing doors. We believe residential home owners will quickly embrace the Quiet Door solution as a ‘must have’ for attached garages.”

CDI Ontario Relaunched

ONTARIO – The Ontario provincial Chapter of the Canadian Door Institute (CDI) was re-launched in March of this year. The new organization launched with 69 member companies, and has plans for an aggressive push to grow membership, and increase participation per company. “We really want to support the industry with a focus on training,” explains Trevor Oake, CDI-Ontario President. This focus, Oake notes, includes continuous training for Sales and Service personnel through support from suppliers/manufacturers. “Plus, there is a Level 1 and a Level 2 certification training now available through CDI National. Level 1 is focused on safety, installation and service for technicians. There is also a Level 1 Advisory Training for owners/managers/sales personnel. Level 2 delves into commercial equipment. The Level 3 certification training will focus on fire-rated products and is scheduled to be available at the end of 2019.” Oake recognizes the challenges that face the new organization: “We need to reach out to the full province and show our support for all Ontario dealers, and get input on the direction members want to see the organization go.” An inaugural event is planned for Wednesday June 12th, at 6pm at the Woodbine Racetrack. The event is free to all CDI members and their staff. The entrance fee for non-members who are interested in learning more about CDI is $25.00 per person. The new CDI-Ontario Board is equally represented by dealers and suppliers/manufacturers:

CALIFORNIA – A new company was launched recently to offer sliding garage door windows to the market. The patent-pending windows are designed to pro-vide ventilation to a garage. The company offers replacement windows that can be slid to the side to expose a screen, therefore allowing air to enter the garage. Company founder, Jim Vitello notes that the sliding windows have two primary benefits. “This design improves the air circulation in the garage, for people or pets,” explains Vitello. “And it also allows the garage to get rid of un-healthy toxic fumes.” The new window includes a retractable screen, durable security bars and the ability to be fully or partially open.

Asta Moves to New Production Facility

GEORGIA – Asta Door Corporation (ADC) re-cently moved in to a new manufacturing facility that doubled its produc-tion space from 40,000 sq.ft. to 80,000 sq.ft. The company notes that this expansion provides adequate room for growth, as well as allowing the company to re-think some of its production process. “We had out-grown the old building as sales grew over the last number of years,” explains Steve Jamell, Vice President of Sales. “This gives us room to further grow.” Jamell also notes that mov-ing to a new facility has allowed the company to enhance operations: “It is a more efficient production flow.”

ADC’s new building also includes a 44’ x 18’ ADC roll-ing steel door that was designed to allow for improved movement and shipping of large rolling steel doors. The door is powered by a 5HP Manaras/Opera operator. The new facility, which is approximately 20 miles from the former production facility, also in-cludes a new, fully ventilated paint line. THIS MONTH'S QUESTIONS

NOTE: These questions and answers are from various home im-provement newsgroups on the internet. These questions are real, and the answers are provided by other internet users, not by the Garage Door News. We are printing these questions to let the industry know what types of information people are looking for about garage doors and garage door openers. The answers will give you an idea of what type of "neighborly advice" is being given out.

FROM THEWEB

QUESTION 1: Problem closing garage doorQUESTION 2: Reducing garage door opener security risk

These questions and answers are from Quora.com

QUESTION 1:How can I close a garage door without pushing and holding the button on a wall electric remote?

QUESTION 1, ANSWER 1:I’m not an expert on garage doors, but from the couple years of working for my dad, I’ve managed to pick up a few things. If I’m not mistaken, if your garage door won’t close unless you hold down the button, it usually means your photo eyes are malfunctioning. Check and see if anything is blocking them, and if there isn’t anything in the way. It could be a problem with the photo eyes themselves. In case you don’t know,

the photo eyes are located at the base of the rails on which the door will raise and lower. I hope this helps!

QUESTION 2:How can automatic garage doors be made more secure from break-ins?

QUESTION 2, ANSWER 1:During your absence, you are at an electronic security risk particularly for older automatic door opener models which only have so many codes. Really sophisticated thieves can intercept and record your garage opener transmitted code. Newer models can have both unlimited codes with many more characters and encrypted opening codes making spoofing of your opener code a bit more difficult.

One possibility is to use two separate openers - one to turn on or off power to the door and another to activate opening. A competent licensed electrician should be able to do this for you. We are in the age of many cell phone controlled devices, one for this may already exist. During your occupancy presence, you can install a wall switch to turn off the power to the automatic opener which makes opening the door quite difficult. You can also install keyless side rail deadbolts and reinforcing bars across the entire door width. Just be sure to release the side bolts before repowering the door.

QUESTION 2, ANSWER 2:Remove the emergency pull cord from the actuator link. It’s easy to spot because it has a red handle dangling from a short pull rope. It’s designed to release from the down chain that drives the door up and down. Thieves can press on the top of your garage door and bend it enough to use a wire to pop it releasing the door and simply pull it up. Then I would get a keypad on the exterior to open in case you lose your wireless remote. Then I would take my car registration and hide it in your car. Thieves will break into your car and steal your remote and registration thereby having your address knowing you’re away from your home and come to your house and just walk in. Then I would get a keychain fob to use. And toss the traditional remote.

QUESTION 2, ANSWER 3:One way is to use a higher security modern garage door receiver and transmitter. They can be purchased separately from the garage door. Or, just buy a new opener- they don’t cost too much, and you should be able to install it yourself in an hour or two.

QUESTION 2, ANSWER 4:Unplug the unit when the home is vacant.

QUESTION 2, ANSWER 5:Big sign: “Please don’t feed the Pit Bull.”

QUESTION 2, ANSWER 6:When we travel, I switch the electric service breaker for the automatic garage door opener to “off.” If I was really obsessed, I would move the pin/bar on one side of the door into the travel frame. It can no longer be pried open. I’m pretty sure every garage door comes supplied with such a manual locking pin.

QUESTION 2, ANSWER 7:An external entry keypad, a keylocked switch access, disconnect opener and get out of your car use keylock in door and open manually.

QUESTION 2, ANSWER 8:Fasten the door guides well; lag bolts should do the job. When going away you can often disengage/lock the drive so that the door cannot be opened from inside or out until unlocked/engaged again.
