•  GAPS, Global Architecture of Planetary Systems, is a long-term programme for the comprehensive characterization of the architectural properties of planetary systems as a function of the hosts’ characteristics (mass, metallicity, environment).

•  GAPS has been approved by Italian TNG TAC: –  AOT 26 (Aug 2012-Jan 2013): 36 nights –  AOT 27 (Feb 2013-Jul 2013): 40 nights

+ long-term status è proposal approved for 2 years.

The GAPS Project

INAF Guidelines to TAC: to dedicate ~80 nights/year of TNG to a large coordinated effort of the Italian community willing to study exoplanets with HARPS-N.

16/5/13 1st CHEOPS Science Meeting - Bern

~ 50 INAF and associated scientists in Italy; ~15 scientists from foreign institutes.

Wide range of expertise –  High resolution spectroscopy –  Stellar rotation and activity –  Crowded stellar environments –  Formation of planetary systems –  Planetary dynamics

AIMS: v Better estimate of frequency of Super Earths in HZ of M dwarfs (at moment

0.41+0.54-0.13 Bonfills et al. 2012)

v To provide benchmark systems for atmospheric characterization

SAMPLE: •  120 M0-M2.5 dwarfs (0.45≤MS/M¤≤0.5)

evenly distributed in the Northern sky •  V<12 mag •  Low RV jitter •  30% in GAIA Fields with >100 Transits

Searching for potentially habitable Neptunes and Super Earths (M < 15 M⊕♁) around a well defined and well characterized sample of M dwarfs

Search for low mass planets orbiting M dwarfs

From a total of 273 observations till mid april 2013

Expected 20± 4 HZ SEarths & Neptunes according to Bonfills et al. (2012) in 2 years

AIMS: a.  Determine the fraction of planetary systems

hosting giant planets beyond 1 AU and low-mass planets (M< 1 MNeptune) in close orbits;

b.  Understand the role of additional planetary (or stellar) companions on the alignment between planetary orbits and stellar rotation;

c.  Carry out a detailed study of a sub-sample of multi-planet systems.

SAMPLE: a.  25 single planets hosts (V < 11) suitable for 1 m/s RV monitoring (low activity, a> 1

AU) with no RV data useful for LMP search; b.  42 transiting giant planets with V 12 & δ>−20°; c.  5 planetary systems for which an intensive RV monitoring.

Main goal is to provide the frequency of “scaled-down” analogues of the Solar System.

AIMS: a.  derive the frequency of Neptunes and Super-

Earths in the metal-poor regime; b.  compare it to the published results for solar

metallicity SAMPLE: a.  200 stars with −2.0 <[Fe/H] <−0.5 observed

with Keck/HIRES with precision of 9 m/s b.  A subsample of 60 are:

•  −1.0 <[Fe/H] <−0.5 dex •  Chromospherically quiet •  V<11 mag

Search for Neptunes and Super-Earths (M < 20 M⊕) around a sample of moderately (−1.0 < [Fe/H] < −0.5) metal-poor FGK dwarfs.

•  HARPS-N will provide new targets for the building of the CHEOPS input catalogue.

•  GAPS is running four detection programs tailored at searching: –  Super Earths and Neptunians in the HZ of early M dwarfs; –  Neptunians around metal poor FGK dwarfs; –  Low mass planets in solar-like planetary systems; –  Jupiters around stars in OCs.
