Key Learnings
• Know what to do yourself, what to have done by professionals and where to involve the community
• Work with an architect and/or designers open to collaboration
• Choosing the wrong location costs a lot of money!
• Keep your expected growth in mind when choosing the size of the space
• Build to last: choose materials and furniture that last and look prettier when deteriorating, build modular
• Be aware of your member / customer needs > especially for meetings, workshops and events
• Over expenditure on renovations averages 20%
• Rent averages 30-50% of total costs
• Be aware that it will probably take a long time until you have the resources and possibility again for major renovations and space changes
