At the AGM in January it was decided to keep the member-ship subscription at £12 for the year, and for this we offer nine meetings with a guest speaker, three social events, a horticultural show and the opportunity to join two trips to large gardens. What is more, refreshments at the meetings are included at no extra cost. Unbelievably good value. Our next meeting is on Tuesday February 9th at 7:30 pm in Carlton Scroop Village Hall when a speaker from Rutland Willows will demonstrate using willow for garden sculpture and other features. If you would like to join the Society, just come along: doors open at 7:00 pm and we will be happy to sign you up. If you would just like to visit, we charge £3. District Councillor’s Report - by Bob Sampson 01400 273873 or 07766387872. Rubbish, Rubbish and Council Tax , - not quite the way to start the New Year, but these are the present facts of life for our rural community. Rubbish 1. A current planning application has been made to Lincolnshire County Council to extend the Mid UK Recy-cling Ltd’s site at Barkston Heath, this covers a ten year expansion plan, incorporating future fire safety features, including a dedicated landscaped water storage lagoon for fire-fighting purposes. An increased annual waste process tonnage from 65,000 to 260,000 tonnes per annum is supported by applications to vary the conditions to allow materials deliveries to take place between 06.00Hrs and 19.00Hrs Mondays to Fridays. At a recent meeting with Mid UK Recycling Ltd at their Cay-thorpe site involving representatives of Caythorpe Parish Council, we were given assurances that any increase in future tonnage at Barkston would not directly impact on the number of operational / vehicular movements at the Cay-thorpe site. We stressed that all communities living adja-cent to the A607 and A153 were very conscious of the con-stant passage of vehicles between the recycling sites. In particular the highway and loaded lorry safety issues, to-gether with the use of inappropriate local roads. Such in-stances should be reported direct to Mid UK Recycling Ltd, Freephone 0800 310 1815, giving time date and registra-tion number. Rubbish 2. Budget costs at Lincolnshire County Council are putting a number of services under threat, this includes the possible closure of the Household Waste Recycling sites at Leadenham and Whisby. At a recent public meeting attended by local County and District Councillors all agreed that “such action would be a seriously retrograde step”. The recycling sites remain very busy. Such closures will force more people to drive further with their rubbish adding to further traffic congestion at sites in Lincoln and Sleaford. This is a false economy, achieving very little overall sav-ings, at the expense of rural communities and the environ-ment. Those present raised concerns about increased costs fal-ling on the District Councils from the consequent likely in-crease in flytipping on public and private land. There could also be an increased demand upon District Council Collec-tion Services. Above all residents of rural communities in Lincolnshire are required to pay the same Council Tax as Urban residents, but without doubt receive lower levels of service. To consider the closure of the Leadenham House-hold Waste Facility is another example of the County Coun-cil denying value for taxes paid by residents of rural com-munities. A working Group has been formed, any support with the campaign and or ideas on developing/running a Community Facility would be welcome, please ring 07920 235 364. Council Tax 2016/2017. SKDC has been recognised by Government as being a low cost council and has been given the opportunity to increase its Council Tax by £5 for a Band D property in 2016/2017, which will generate an extra £227,000 per year to continue to pay for frontline services. The Council Leader Bob Adams stated “We know times are tough, but this small increase in Council Tax together with the £1m efficiency savings already made, will allow SKDC to continue to deliver the services our customers expect and to develop, invest and deliver council priorities. Al-though this proposed increase is small the council would

like residents and businesses to share their views online at https://www.surveymonkey.co.uk/r/counciltax201617 by February 4th, 2016. Please record your objection to any proposals which would lead to the closure of Leadenham Household Recy-cling Site, by e-mailing the LCC Executive Portfolio holder for Waste [email protected] There are also copies of the petition to sign at the various Cliff Edge village outlets. Parish Council Report At a Parish Council meeting held on 11th January the fol-lowing matters were discussed. In his V.H.& P.F. report Peter Hughes reported that quotes have been applied for work to be carried on the Vil-lage Hall kitchen and cloak rooms. Also grants are to be applied for. Donations totalling £331.91 have been paid into the playground fund. . The District Councillor reported on a number of matters. See report included in the News Letter. A grant of £200 is to be made to the P.C.C. for financial help with the cost of repairs to the supporting structure of the church clock. This money is from LCC’S Big Society fund. There have been no developments in attempts to solve the problems arising from the number of vehicles parking in Lime Tree Close and causing difficulties for Emergency vehicles. Concern was expressed about news received that the Tip at Leadenham is to close. The Chairman and District Councillor and members of the Parish Council are to attend a meeting in Navenby to discuss the problem. Concern was also expressed about the planning application to increase the tonnage at the Barkston Heath Recycling Centre from 60,000 tonnes to 160,000 tonnes. It was felt that this would result in increased traffic through our village. Notice of the proposed 30 m.p.h. speed limit along the A607 is to be published in the Grantham Journal 19th Janu-ary. Objections should be submitted by 15th February. In reply to a query from a member of the public concern-ing the lack of information on the post box on the Village Hall wall, the chairman said a letter would be sent to the Grantham Post Master. The meeting was informed that the Village Garden Fete will be held on Sunday 17th July. It was suggested that celebration of the Queen’s 90th birthday could be held at the same time. The next meetings will be held on Monday 15th February and Monday 4th April 2016 in Fulbeck Village Hall at 7.30 p.m. Members of the public are invited to attend meetings when they can ask questions and raise points. If you wish a matter discussed please contact the Chairman Ann Sampson 01400 273873 or the clerk Mrs C. Tointon 01400273114

Speed Limit Update by Iris Morison. Highways are placing Notices in the Press this week and appear to be on schedule to have the new speed limit in place by April this year. When the new signage is being installed, we have also asked if the section of Bulby Lane which has a nonsensical "unrestricted" speed limit be in-cluded in the 30 mph. In addition, at the junction of North End and the A607 there is no "Unsuitable for HGVs" sign. This has also been requested. David & Iris Morison

Ronnie's Recipes Well I can’t believe we are a month into 2016 – where did last year go? I am beginning to work on new recipes (each year I concentrate on different things - 2014 was all about baking with our oil and 2015 was all about marinating and spices). This year I am going to be looking at gluten free baking and oil in recipes for coeliacs (which the rest of us can still enjoy!) As always these recipes will be trialled out on “my boys” here at the farm! But for now I am giving you a nice light recipe for all those fish lovers or those starting off 2016 with a pledge to eat less meat or be that little bit healthier. SEAFOOD KEBABS WITH A DILL AND MUSTARD DRESSING Makes 6 kebabs 6 king prawns (ready prepared) 6 pieces of firm white fish (halibut/haddock/monkfish/cod) 6 mussels or scallops 6 chestnut mushrooms 1 red bell pepper A drizzle of Ownsworth’s rapeseed oil Dressing 2 teaspoons sugar 2 tablespoons wholegrain mustard 3 tablespoons apple cider vinegar 6 tablespoons Ownsworth’s rapeseed oil 4 tablespoons chopped dill (or 2 tablespoons dried dill) 2 tablespoons capers To make the dressing: in a small bowl whisk together the sugar, mustard and vinegar. Gradually whisk in the rape-seed oil until you have a thick dressing. Then stir in the dill and capers. Transfer to a small jug for serving. Method

Use ready prepared shellfish and skinned white fish (ask your fishmonger or other retailer to shell and skin these for you).

Halve the mushrooms and deseed and chop the bell pepper into large chunks.

Alternate chunks of fish, mushroom and pepper onto skewers. Drizzle over a little oil. Season with salt and pepper. Grill or bake the kebabs until the fish is completely cooked through and the vegetables softened and golden.

Serve immediately with a simple salad and the dressing. Fulbeck History Group – By Ginny Walkley and Anne Watler A Happy New Year to everyone . Our November meeting was concerned with administration and planning, with the resulting dates shown at the end of this article. We had no meeting in December as we thought everyone would be otherwise engaged on Friday the 25th! So looking back briefly, here is a résumé of our October talk, which all seems so long ago now.

An Evening with Tameside Metal Detectorists, Frank Linney, Alan Bates and Alan Jackson

The Tameside Detectors Club is the second oldest in Britain and complies with the 'Portable Antiquities Scheme', a De-partment for Culture, Media & Sport funded project to en-courage the voluntary recording of archaeological objects found by members of the public in England and Wales. Many thousands are discovered every year by metal detec-

torists and others. All finders of coin hoards, or gold and silver have a legal obligation to report such items under the Treasure Act 1996 and failure to report them can carry a hefty fine. However some finds can be confusing; a small piece of gold found around 1940 was thought to be Roman but eventually identified as a piece of solid gold denture! They emphasised the importance of acting responsibly, tak-ing out insurance, gaining permission of the landowner, abiding by the Code of Conduct of The National Council for Metal Detecting (N.C.M.D), and properly recording all finds. Metal detectors work by recognising electromagnetic sig-nals given by objects buried 10-15 inches (25 - 40cms) be-low ground, each metal giving a different signal. However, apart from the thrill of finding something not touched for maybe hundreds or even thousands of years, the fascina-tion the hobby is in researching the finds, and gaining an understanding of their historical context. Alan B related the story of the famous 'Knutsford Hoard'. Having obtained per-mission from a farmer, digging uncovered a silver denarius and a few other bits. They arranged with the farmer to go back the following week and found another 7 dinari, which led to thoughts of a possible hoard, so the Finds Liaison Officer (FLO) was contacted to get the archaeologist in-volved. Initial thoughts were of a hoard scattered by plough-ing. Over the following days, a silver trumpet brooch, finger ring and over 50 further coins were found. Later a 10 square metre hole was dug and 50 more silver dinari and another brooch were uncovered. The hoard was sent to Liverpool museum for restoration and three years later is nearing completion. Shards of the pot containing the Knuts-ford Hoard came from the time of Marcus Aurelius. After final valuation, any money will be shared 50:50 with the farmer. It will be displayed at Liverpool Museum together with the Malpas Hoard, thought to have been buried by Caractacus fleeing from the Romans. We finally spent a happy hour chatting with them about their detecting experiences and asking for advice and more infor-mation, as well as being privileged to examine and handle some of their most interesting finds. A wonderful and fasci-nating evening. Forthcoming events (at 7.30 pm at the Village Hall unless otherwise noted). Christmas Flower Arranging Thank you to the team of flower arrangers who had a lovely time together & decorated the church so beautifully on 22nd December. The two large wreaths made by Rachel Petherham, and decorated by our team , with flowers donated by Mrs Wards family, looked amazing in the porch and on top of the font. The lights given by Jane Hodcroft helped illuminate the evergreen. Thank you also to Mrs Beeby, who is Mrs Greasley's niece, for the donation of money, towards the cost of flowers in memory of Mrs Greasley. Those involved were Julia Fane, Jane & Lottie Harrison, Jane Hodcroft, Iris Morison, Judy Peberdy, Pam Rice, Ann Samson, Meme & Constance Smith, Jenni Tree, and Judy Woolfitt. Dani Buck & Carol Aram. Bishop of Grantham’s Letter Dear Friends, This letter comes with my prayers for you and for us all as this month we enter the season of Lent and begin to look towards Easter. This year I can genuinely say that Lent has come very quickly, because Easter 2016 is almost as early as it is possible for it to be. I hope that in the 2016 rush into Lent we don’t overlook the very special time that comes at the end of Epiphany and just before Ash Wednesday. The day in the Church’s year that marks this time is the Presentation of Christ, February 2nd. On this day, we remember Je-sus’ parents taking him to the Temple and being greeted by Simeon and Anna. Old meet young in a holy place and St Luke records what happens in words of great beauty. I invite you to find this passage and to read it for yourselves: Luke 2.22–40. Truth is spoken and recog-nised and there is a palpable sense of wonder and of joy. Old peoples’ faithfulness is validated, as is the courage of Jesus’ parents and his own coming role in the salvation of the world. I particularly like the prayer that ends the service in church on the Feast of the Presentation. The minister makes three statements: ‘We stand near the place of new birth’; ‘We turn from the crib to the cross’; ‘We go to carry his light’; to each of which the people reply: ‘Let us shine with the light of your love’.To me, this prayer draws us into the turn that happens as we look away from the Christmas crib and towards the Easter cross. As Christ lived and died for us, so our life is now illuminated by his life – we who follow him radiate the light of his love in the world. We are no longer onlookers but participants with a purpose. I am very much looking forward to my first Lent and Easter in the Diocese of Lincoln. I have been humbled and moved by peoples’ kind-ness as I have taken up my responsibilities as Bishop of Grantham, and I am savouring the prospect of visiting parishes, schools and other organisations just as quickly as I can. But in looking forward, I don’t want, as it were, simply to get ‘caught up in the rush’ and forget what it is that I am doing and why I am doing it. And I very much hope that we might all be able to resist similar pressure whenever it oc-curs for each of us. We always need to remember that we are people with a purpose, the loved children of God, illuminated with the light of Christ, and not just those who rush from one thing to another, aimlessly. My particular responsibility in the diocese is for ministry. This is a big and slippery word, and one that can regrettably sometimes be used rather bluntly. As I understand it, however, all Christians share in the ministry of the Church, by virtue of who we are, baptised followers of Jesus. In our daily lives, at work, with those whom we love, in our leisure, we are His people. If we can see this, and acknowledge the light that we all carry, then we will indeed be the disciples that Jesus would have us be. May God bless you this month as we turn from the crib to the cross, shining with the light of Christ in the world. + Nicholas :
