In 1926, our founder, Andreas Stihl, a professional engineer, set out to make work easier for the professional forester. Today, he is recognized as the ‘Father of the Chain Saw’.

Mr. Hans Peter Stihl, a professional engineer like his father, joined STIHL in 1960 and with an industry-leading expertise in two-cycle technology, oversaw the expansion of the product line in the power tool segment with the introduction of brushcutters, blowers, cement saws and a number of other industrial products.

On July 1, 2012, the Stihl family business transitions to a third generation of engineering leadership with the appointment of Dr. Nikolas Stihl as Chairman of the Advisory and Supervisory boards. Dr. Stihl studied mechanical engineering at Stuttgart University where he received his master’s degree in 1988. In 1997, he obtained his doctorate in mechanical and process engineering from Chemnitz University. Dr. Stihl was employed by Mercedes-Benz AG in Stuttgart from 1987–1990 where he was involved in the development of the 12-cylinder engine. He joined the family business after working as an industry consultant in Munich between 1990–1992. Initially, he worked at STIHL U.S. as a product manager responsible for chain saws. Dr. Stihl was most recently the Managing Director of Viking GmbH, based in Austria, a wholly owned subsidiary of the STIHL group producing lawn mowers, garden tractors and electric and battery-powered gardening tools.

In Dr. Stihl’s opening address to STIHL’s 12,000+ global employees, he made the following statement:

“I am assuming strategic responsibility for a very successful company, a fact that has been impressively demonstrated by the company’s most recent growth statistics. However, taking on the responsibility in a successful company does not mean one can lie back and relax. Quite the contrary. Even though we are excellently positioned with our product throughout the world and I am optimistic about the future, there are further challenges to be faced. We will adhere to our time proven strategy; organic growth through new product development, technology leadership and continued innovation for our customers and distribution through authorized servicing dealers. We are creating the framework for further profitable growth with huge investments in research and development. Those who slow down in this respect automatically fall behind – we will not slow down.”

Three new products hitting the market under our new leadership include: the TS 500i, our latest addition to the Cutquik® line. It is the world’s first electronically controlled fuel injected cut-off saw, and features 17% more power with only a 6% weight increase as compared to the TS 420. Also being introduced is the GS 461 “Rock Boss™” for the construction market. This power unit with bar and diamond abrasive chain is designed for wet cutting of square corners and small openings in concrete, reinforced concrete and brick walls. And finally, an addition to our chain saw family, the MS 461 chain saw. Featuring our stratified charge engine technology and an improved filtration system, this new powerhouse meets Canada’s stringent emission requirements. Read about each of these newcomers in the following pages.

Like Dr. Stihl, we are excited and confident about our future. Thank you for your past patronage. We look forward to partnering with you on the job throughout generation number three.

Sincerely, STIHL Limited

STORAGE TIPThanks to their sophisticated technology and sturdy construction, STIHL chain saws require very little care and maintenance. During the season, this is likely to be confined to checking the chain regularly, and keeping the cutting teeth sharp for a better cut and to protect the engine. Here are a few tips for storing your equipment during the winter months. This will ensure that your equipment, when required again, will be ready for action right away. 1. To get the equipment ready for winter, clean it first. The air filter, the cylinder fins, the spark plug and the dismantled cutting tool should be checked and cleaned (also see Owner’s Manual). Metal parts should be slightly lubricated with oil.  2. The fuel tank should be emptied. Run the carburetor until dry (Warning! Do not operate the throttle; run equipment in idle until the engine stops!). For winter storage, a dry and, if possible, dust-free and frost-free place would be ideal. You can save space if you hang the equipment. And remember: the fuel mix deteriorates; to avoid malfunction, it should not be kept over a long period of time.

My wife has spent a lifetime watching me build stuff.

Often, she says: “We could call somebody”.

Because I am fluent in the alien tongue known as Spouse, I know she really means: “Oh my. This appears stressful. Your thumbnail? Not supposed to be purple, is it? Perhaps your life would be easier if we engaged the services of a handyman. Would you like me to look someone up on the internet? Because I love you more than life itself.”.

But before I translate Spouse into English, I first translate it into Guy, and “We could call somebody” becomes, “You incompetent butt monkey. Put down that hammer and let me find a real man to solve all my problems.”.

I never claimed the male mind was a pretty thing.

She has never understood that when I string together a series of anatomically improbable obscenities so vile that it’s the kind of thing that gets you executed by the Taliban…I’m sort of having fun.

Forget about explaining that hitting your thumb with a hammer only adds to the satisfaction of completion…when completion finally comes.

That sometimes, it’s all about the journey.

You can’t say you’ve conquered Everest if a Sherpa carries you to the top, anymore than you can say, “I remodeled the kitchen,” if all you did was make a phone call and hand somebody your credit card.

I can’t climb Mt. Everest -- don’t like heights, which is why I break down and hire roofers -- but I can do a lot of other stuff around the house.

Which is good for me and good for the house even though sometimes I bleed a little and it gets loud and obscene.

Still, I hang around the hardware store looking happy, she sighs and says, “We could call somebody”.

Until last week.

I came home from work and she put her arms around me and said, “Thank you for building stuff”.

“How come?”

“You remember how the Pilsons had somebody in to build their new fence?”

The Pilsons are neighbours.

Guy they hired looked so sketchy, I made sure the windows were locked and the curtains drawn so he couldn’t see the new wide screen and start entertaining evil thoughts.

I don’t mind a little ink, but as far as I’m concerned, the minute you tattoo an obscenity across your knuckles, you’ve announced your departure from humankind.

It took the guy three days to build a 36-foot fence on one side of their property -- and that’s without having to dig new fence posts. He used the existing ones.

I recently built a fence of the same length on my property from virtually the same materials. It cost me $400 bucks, two days moving sluggishly in the heat and some skin off my right hand.

“He charged them $2,500,” she said.

“WHAT?”

“And they paid him. Because we didn’t hire somebody, we have $2,100 to spend on something important,” she said.

“Women’s shoes?” I said.

“That’s sexist,” she said.

“Women’s shoes?”

“Yes,” she said. “Now shut up and build something”.

With the dog days of summer behind us and the mornings becoming bright and cooler, it’s a sure sign that fall is just around the corner. Along with the cooler days and evenings, very soon we will be able to enjoy the spectacular colour show of the fall season. With the fall and leaf season almost here, now is a great time to prepare your blower for the fall clean-up task. As with all equipment, a little preventative maintenance goes a long way to ensuring a season of trouble-free running and, if you happen to need some repairs, now is a great time to get the machine to your local STIHL Dealer before the fall season press is on.

When you prepare your machine for fall clean-up, ensure that the fuel system is emptied, the fuel filter is clean, the fuel line is flexible and without any type of damage to it. If you find either damage or compromise to the fuel lines or filter, they should be replaced before putting the machine to work.

Inspect all the controls. The choke and throttle system must engage and properly disengage. On/off switches and interlock or lockout controls must function as the manufacturer designed, or they should be repaired or replaced to ensure operator safety.

Inspect the air filtration. Before removing the air filter cover, close the choke valve as this will minimize the possibility of debris entering the engine while you perform maintenance on the system. Remove the air filter cover; carefully remove any debris you see before you remove the filter. Remove the air filter and inspect for any damage to the sealing surface or the element itself. Lightly brush any heavy debris from the element with a soft brush, hold the filter up to light and see if light passes through the filter if it’s a pleated paper type; if not replace it. Do not blow the filter off with compressed air as this practice can severely damage a filter and cause serious engine damage. Many STIHL blowers are designed with a compensating carburetor so, as the filter becomes soiled, the carburetor automatically adjusts the air/fuel ratio to ensure proper adjustment. If your blower loses power while running, change the air filter; or if your inspection reveals any damage to the filter, replace the filter immediately.

Remove the spark plug wire, remove the spark plug and inspect. The spark plug should be a tan colour. If it is heavily fouled or damaged in any way, replace the spark plug with a new one.

Good fuel handling practices remain the most important thing an operator can do to ensure that the machine starts easily and runs well during the fall clean-up season. Always use a minimum Octane rated gasoline of 89 or higher. This is required as the

machines today run much hotter than years ago, and this increased heat can cause engine damage if the gasoline is not of a high enough Octane rating. Use STIHL Premium mix oil available at your STIHL Dealer. The oil is packaged in convenient sizes so you can add one container of oil to a gasoline can, fill the can with proper fuel and mix it well, and you’re ready to go. No measuring and guessing. Always mix fuel in a proper certified gasoline can, never in the fuel tank of the machine. After mixing the fuel or re-fueling the machine, ensure that the fuel supply can is tightly sealed so the gasoline, which may contain Ethanol, cannot attract moisture from the atmosphere which is its natural tendency. This tendency of Ethanol in gasoline will cause significant frustration and expense to the owner of machines if this warning is not heeded. All STIHL equipment today uses a 50:1 gasoline/oil ratio, or 10 litres of gasoline must contain 200 mL of STIHL Premium oil or STIHL HP Ultra oil. Only mix enough fuel to last for a few weeks, never more than 90 days maximum, and purchase fuel in the season that you intend to use it in because fuel blending changes through the year.

Inspect the blower discharge tubes to be certain they fit tight and are not worn and need to be replaced. A worn blower discharge tube can cause serious engine damage as it can change the load on the engine. If we have a dry fall, when you begin blowing leaves it can be quite dry and dusty. This condition can lead to a static electrical charge building up in the blower tubes; this can then discharge through to operator, giving the operator a shock similar to a static discharge shock you receive getting out of your automobile from time to time.

While operating the machine, ensure the grilles for the air intake of the blower and engine remain free and clear of leaves and debris. Allowing these grilles to cover over with leaves reduces the blower output performance, and can lead to engine over-heating issues and serious engine damage as well.

Taking a few simple steps before the season begins will help ensure that your machine will function without problem and allow you to complete your tasks more easily and quickly, so you can get back to watching the ball game.

Operator’s Manuals for your machine can be found on our website at www.stihl.ca under the ‘Products’ tab.

GENERATOR The generator produces all the electricity required to power the control unit and operate the cut-off saw. It does this right from the first rotation of the crankshaft during start-up.

SENSOR The sensor measures the temperature and pressure in the crank chamber. This information is then transmitted to the control unit.

CONTROL UNIT The control unit is the most crucial part of the STIHL Injection system. It continuously analyses the information transmitted by the generator and the sensor, and regulates the fuel injection and ignition accordingly.

FUEL INJECTION PUMP The fuel injection pump keeps the fuel pressure constant. This guarantees that the fuel injector is always supplied with sufficient fuel at just the right pressure.

FUEL INJECTOR The control unit triggers the fuel injector, which injects the optimal amount of fuel directly into the crankcase. This procedure is synchronized with the engine cycle.

For building projects where timing is of the essence, you need a tool that allows you to work quickly and efficiently. The STIHL TS 500i with STIHL Injection is the most reliable workmate you could hope for. It combines precision, efficiency and user-friendliness with cutting-edge technology. So you can focus on what matters most – your work.

As you know, chain saw training must be approached carefully; it’s the tool in the entire landscape/golf/tree care equipment arsenal that’s the most menacing in terms of employee injury, probably with the most hazard potential.

What are the training techniques and methods available to you? There’s the manufacturer stuff: videos and manuals, and then there’s in-field training or on the job training. As a supervisor, you need to decide: how much training should be done online, with DVDs or reading operating manuals, and how much should be done in the field. Consider the pros and cons, but both methods should have a role to play in your operation.

How do people learn best is the first question. There are four ways to learn: see it, hear it, do it and discuss it. The classroom, owner’s manual and video route give you the see and hear, but not the do or the discussion. Video or owners’ manual training can be done by the employee by himself, which is great in-season when you don’t need a group training session, and is helpful when just one person needs training. It’s certainly convenient for the supervisor. The practical aspect gives you the do part, and probably some discussion, but might lack the details and thoroughness of the video or classroom learning, where it’s structured and you don’t miss a thing. Classroom/video is less interesting than actually doing it, but practical training can eat up precious supervisor time. So, what to do?

You need a balance of both. After creating 27 other online equipment training videos and exams, we are finally tackling chain saw with our friend, veteran arborist and chain saw instructor Rick McKinnon of Strathroy, Ontario. We know that practical training is essential, and that it needs to be more involved than with most other equipment.

Our plan is to create a really good illustrative video, with a point by point illustration of the saw’s parts and functions, operating techniques and hazards. Simulating in the video as much as we can to illustrate what actually happens when using a chain saw. Then the practical field training needs to be more closely supervised than with say, a greens mower on a golf course. On the golf course, you would simply have someone cut a tee block or the approach to a green, not the green itself. If a mistake is made, then the consequences aren’t dire. Herein lies the special challenge of the chain saw: a simple mistake doing any routine task can be fatal. Extra time and attention is needed with the practical side of chain saw training.

As with other training, use a staged approach: easiest, safest tasks first. Perhaps, clean-up work, sawing logs or trimming branches, then move onto more difficult techniques like felling. However, always classroom/video/manual first, then the practical second. This allows you to warn about every hazard before the worker ever touches the machine, so at least they are aware of the known hazards. Always use a checklist when training so you don’t forget something important. Due diligence demands a detailed training record and, a checked-off checklist with employee and supervisor sign-off at the end is an essential procedure.

And finally, the only way to know if your training got through to the employee is to do an evaluation: a traditional multiple choice exam or an in-field evaluation. Better yet, do both. It might sound like a lot, but once you’ve written your exam questions and created a checklist, the procedure is now standardized and training can be done in a few hours or perhaps a half day at most, where the employee can perform basic chain saw work safely.

Employ a training system that gets you where you need to be in terms of employee performance, safety, due diligence and cost efficiency.

SCHAIN SAWS ARE USED TO CUT MORE THAN WOOD

Since the introduction of the modern chain saw, outdoorsmen have been using them not only to cut wood, but also to cut ice for fishing.

While not recommended for this purpose, STIHL chain saws, particularly ones with higher displacement and polymer casings, are very efficient at cutting holes in the frozen lakes, rivers and bodies of salt water in Canada. A large amount of fishing is done in salt water, which is particularly hard on aluminum and magnesium parts of the chain saw. In fact, many fishermen remove the oil pump all together. The combination of salt, water and the electrical current from the ignition causes the aluminum pump to deteriorate very quickly. The ice and water are enough to lubricate the bar and chain. Those who do use oil recommend vegetable oil or the STIHL BioPlus biodegradable oil, so as not to contaminate the water.

Whether cutting through wood or ice, safety is a paramount concern. Cutting ice brings added danger of slippery footing. In order to keep the water flow over the ice and the spray to a minimum, experienced fishermen will leave 1 to 2 inches of ice at the bottom of the cut close to the water, break that part away, and then either extract the block or push it under the ice. The bar length commonly used is 24”.

Among the most common types of seafood caught in ice covered waters in Atlantic Canada are smelts and oysters. Smelts are caught with either a line and hook, or commercially using bag nets. Bag nets are set by cutting three main holes in the ice with a chain saw. The net is anchored and fish are retrieved through these holes. Other smaller holes are cut along the sides to set and extend the net. Oysters are attached to a rack or frame and submersed in the water in late fall. The location of the rack is noted on a GPS system. When the water freezes over, chain saws are used to harvest the oysters as needed, providing a supply of fresh cultivated oysters during the winter months.
