Chantilly played host to one of the high points ofthe French racing season, the QIPCO Prix du JockeyClub, on June 3rd. This race has acquired aninternational reputation as a stallion making race.Elaborating further, it’s a contest in which the winnersgo on to enjoy resounding success at stud, and thenames of Le Havre, Lope De Vega, Shamardal andLawman spring to mind, although these are only themost ‘recent’ examples. Despite this being apex ofthe French classic season, races for Purebred Arabianson the card were conspicuous by their absence.However, the benefits which they brought to theFrench racing sector were, however, tangible. Thesponsor, QIPCO, is Qatari and the initial ‘Qatar’ linkto France was forged via Purebred Arabians.Furthermore, three of the five Group race winners onthe Prix du Jockey Club card are in the ownership ofstables which straddle both sides of the ‘equine’divide. Mission Impassible (Galileo), the winner of thePrix de Sandringham (Gr. II), for one, races in thecolours of Mohammed Fahad Bin Abdullah Al Attiyah,the latter having initially raced Purebred Arabians inFrance. The Prix du Gros-Chêne (Gr. III) was the sceneof a tour de force from Finsbury Square (Siyouni). Agraduate of the Haras du Berlais where he was born,this sprinter races in the colours of Berend VanDalfsen, who has also made his mark as a breeder oftop level Purebred Arabians. Finally, the feature raceon the card, the QIPCO Prix du Jockey Club, wasannexed by Study of Man (Deep Impact) – with thecolt giving the impression that he has ample scopefor improvement. His trainer, Pascal Bary, has alsoenjoyed success at the high end of the PurebredArabian scene thanks to Arawak d’Aroco(Manganate). This follows wins in the Derby des Pur-sang Arabes at Chantilly and the Trophée duPrésident at Évry. Study of Man carries the colours ofthe Niarchos Family; a trait he shares in common withthe Group I PA placegetters Buthan (Kesberoy),Pegasus (Dormane), Cobalto (Dormane) and Roslind(Dormane). Furthermore, it’s on the cards that thishistorical stable will be represented in PurebredArabian races, as several of their PA juveniles are dueto go into training this year!

Le 3 juin dernier, Chantilly accueillait le Qipco Prixdu Jockey Club, un des temps forts de la saisonhippique française. Cette épreuve est considérée àl’international comme une stallion making race. C’est-à-dire une course dont les vainqueurs connaissent unsuccès retentissant au haras (Le Havre, Lope de Vega,Shamardal, Lawman… pour ne citer que les plusrécents). The members of the AFAC (Association françaisedu cheval arabe de course) held their general assemblyat the La Teste-de-Buch racecourse on June 6th.

The meeting began with an important overview andhealth check of the AFAC, complete with an updateon new projects undertaken such as the ArabianYearbook and the new internet site.

Yves Plantin began proceedings by introducing thePresident’s report. Treasurer Jean-Marc de Watrigant,vice-president Axelle Nègre de Watrigant and theorganisation’s secretary Jean-Paul Larrieu thensuccessively took it in turns to speak. They respectivelyelaborated on: the finances, the funding of the 2017-18 race programme, sponsorship and health matters.Rounding off, Loïc Malivet, the President of theFédération des éleveurs (Breeders’ Association),graced us with his presence by giving his opinion onmatters pertaining to equine welfare, VAT, theFederation of Thoroughbred Breeders’ Association(FTBA) and RESPE, Reseau d’Épidemio-surveillance enPathologie Équine (equine pathology).

At the end of the meeting, the delegates availedthemselves to lunchtime cocktails – served on theterrace of the main conference area. Following therunning of the Purebred Arabians’ race, those presentwere given access to a specially designated areaopposite the winning post. This enabled the delegatesto socialise with a glass of champagne and ‘capture’the racing in a sunny environment. So, for thispurpose, deckchairs were made available. Thisinitiative was put in place to enable the participants toexchange ideas in a setting in which they were reallyable to make the most of it at the heart of it all.

La réunion a débuté par un bilan portant sur la santéde l’association et sur les nouveaux projets réaliséstels que l’Arabian Yearbook et le nouveau site internet.

Le président, Yves Plantin, a ouvert la séance par sonrapport moral. Le trésorier, Jean-Marc de Watrigant,la vice-présidente, Axelle Nègre de Watrigant, etenfin le secrétaire, Jean-Paul Larrieu, ont tour à tourpris la parole. Ils ont ainsi respectivement pu faire lepoint sur la trésorerie, le financement du programmede courses 2017 et 2018, le sponsoring et le voletsanitaire. Enfin, Loïc Malivet, président de laFédération des éleveurs, a honoré l'Assemblée enintervenant sur de nombreux sujets tels que le bien-être équin, la T.V.A., le F.T.B.A., le Respe, etc.

À la suite de la réunion, les participants ont pris partau cocktail déjeunatoire servi sur la terrasse de la sallede réception. Puis, après la course de pur-sangarabes, les adhérents présents ont eu accès à l’espaceaménagé sur la pelouse en face du poteau d’arrivée.Cet espace réservé a permis à chacun de se retrouverautour d’une coupe de champagne, en profitant destransats installés pour suivre les courses sous le soleil.Cette initiative a été mise en place pour que lesparticipants puissent échanger et profiter de cettejournée au cœur de l’action.

During the course of the afternoon, the election resultswere announced. The winner of the raffle was alsounveiled complete with first prize of a meal for four ata restaurant on the Arc de Triomphe and QatarArabians World Cup ‘card’ on Sunday, October 7th.

It was the intention of the organisers that this occasionshould take embrace a spirit of sharing andconviviality, and it has become an important event inthe lifeblood of our association. We hope that it wasappreciated by the participants and that they willshare their experiences. Consequently, we hope thatthe numbers will swell next year and that the ‘generalassembly’ will become a must attend event.

We would also like to thank the president of La Teste-de-Buch racecourse, Jean-Marie Plassan, as well ashis team which includes our vice-president AxelleNègre de Watrigant.

In this same regard, we would also like to thankFréderic Bolteau, the Institut Français du Cheval et del’Équitation (IFCE) delegate, and Adrien Cugnasse,from Jour de Galop, for attending. �

Au cours de l’après-midi ont été annoncés lesrésultats des élections et du résultat du tirage au sortqui a désigné le gagnant d’une offre restauration pourquatre personnes, le dimanche 7 octobre, journée del’Arc de Triomphe et de la Qatar Arabian World Cup.Cette journée – que notre association souhaitaitplacer sous le signe du partage et de la convivialité –est un rendez-vous important dans la vie de notreassociation. Nous espérons que les participantsl’auront appréciée, qu’ils partageront leur expérienceafin que nous soyons encore plus nombreux l’annéeprochaine et que l’Assemblée générale devienne unévénement incontournable.

Battling qualities to the fore

Al Walid (Dahess) set the pace with Lightning Bolttracking him on his outer. Shahm, the future winnerand pursuing an outer course off the rail, sat in fourthas Khataab (Amer) and Almaa (Amer) brought up therear. Leaving the turn, Al Walid gradually came underpressure, as Lightning Bolt and Shahm, having bothbeen held-up, started to battle it out. Khataabflattered on the rails but Shahm never flinched theissue and wouldn’t be denied. Nafees, redeeminghimself following some below par efforts, ran on withgusto to be a close second following an excellentfinish.

The second Group one success of Xavier Thomas-Demeaulte

Winning trainer Xavier Thomas-Demeaulte told us:“On his comeback race at Toulouse, Shahm was anunlucky fourth as he was reluctant to get in the thickof it due to a combination of inexperience and a lackof confidence. Without that, he should have won. Heacts on any ground and has even won the sand trackat Pompadour. When the quality is there, it’s possibleto win anywhere. He needs to maintain thismomentum and is certainly entitled to take his chancein the Qatar Arabian World Cup (Gr 1PA).”

Entraîneur du lauréat, Xavier Thomas-Demeaulte nousa confié : « Lors de sa rentrée, à Toulouse, Shahm avaitété quatrième en étant malheureux car il n’avait pasvoulu s’engager dans les chevaux, par manqued’expérience et en raison d'un peu de timidité. Sanscela, il aurait dû gagner. Il fait tous les terrains et amême gagné sur le sable de Pompadour. Quand laqualité est là, on peut gagner partout. Il faut continuersur cette lancée et il est certainement capable d’allersur la Qatar Arabian World Cup (Gr. I PA). »

(Mahabb), who is coming off a Group III third.”

Thierry Delègue, the manager of this stable, confided:“We are, of course, over the moon as we were surethat the horse was a Group I class. He wasn’t able toshow his true mettle on his last start, but he is amongthe elite of the Purebred Arabian breed and we aregoing to manage him carefully as we believe in him.Until now, he has run very little and can improvefurther. There is still a long way to go before the QatarArabian World Cup but obviously we are thinkingabout it. He’s a serious horse and an easy ride – so wecan dream-on as regards capturing further big races.He is well trained and mentally on good terms withhimself. He represents a triumph of his breeding.”

C’est uncheval sérieux et facile à monter. Avec lui, on peut rêverdes plus belles victoires. Il est bien entraîné et biendans sa tête. C’est aussi un succès pour l’élevage. »

Nafees takes a step towards Newbury

Charles Gourdain, the trainer of the second Nafeessaid: “He has run very well and has recaptured his verybest form. He came from a long way back and finishedthe final 200 meters in crescendo. Lightning Bolt: not firing on all cylinders

Karin Van Den Bos opined of Lightning Bolt’s thirdplace: “The pace was too slow. Furthermore, he wasn’t100 per cent and is a better horse on heavy ground.I’m disappointed that Olivier Peslier’s mount pippedus for second. I don’t know where he will go next buthe will back for the Qatar Arabian World Cup.”

Nafees vers Newbury

Lightning Bolt n'était pas à 100 %

Karin van den Bos nous a dit au sujet du troisième,Lightning Bolt : « Le train de la course était trop lentpour lui. De plus, il n'était pas à 100 % et il est bienmeilleur en terrain lourd. Je suis déçue que le chevald'Olivier Peslier nous ait ravi la deuxième place. Je nesais pas encore ce qu'il va courir par la suite, mais ilreviendra pour la Qatar Arabian World Cup. »

By offering an idyllic part of ‘Bourgfontaine’ withlittle or no trees to the Carthusian religious order in1325, Charles of Valois, father of Philip VI – the firstking of the Valois dynasty – enabled it to becomeone of the most stunning Carthusian monasteries inNorthern France. It also assumed a spiritualsignificance – so much so that Philip VI had his heartburied there in 1355. It survived the FrenchRevolution and the partial dismantling of thebuildings thanks to its owners which havenumbered just seven since 1811.

En offrant la clairière de Bourgfontaine à l’ordredes Chartreux en 1325, Charles de Valois, père dupremier roi, Philippe VI, de la dynastie des Valois, anon seulement permis au lieu de devenir l’une desplus rayonnantes Chartreuses du nord de la France,mais aussi d’y attacher une âme, à tel point que le roiPhilippe VI y fit enterrer son cœur en 1355. Ellesurvivra à la révolution française et au démantèlementpartiel des bâtiments grâce à seulement septpropriétaires depuis 1811.

In the 15th century, the monastery was home to twenty-three monks and no fewer than eightybrothers of the lay orders. The monastery’s charter,in reality a large scale painting – a commissionundertaken by the artist Louis Licherie in 1687 onbehalf of the main convent of the ‘Voiron’ order inthe Isère region – is a magnificent depiction of thebuilding.

Restored in the first instance by Henri de Robervalbetween 1905 and 1935, the domain wasdiscovered by the horse racing trainer FrançoisMathet in 1962. It was his idea of an idyllic oasis of tranquillity in which to breed thoroughbreds – inan ambiance of security and one far removed fromprying eyes.

Today what remains is a main building measuring1,350m2, which is a harmonious mixture of vaultedrooms, original fortifications, restoration worksundertaken in stone – in line with its medievalorigins – and large reception rooms reflecting the 19th century style of Parisian townhouses. Itcomprises two living rooms, two dining rooms, asnooker room, a big family kitchen, seven roomswith adjoining bathrooms, plus staff living quarters.

Au XVe siècle, la chartreuse accueillait vingt-troismoines et pas moins de quatre-vingts frèresconvers. Une “carte de chartreuse”, en réalité untableau de grand format, commandée en 1687 àLouis Licherie par la maison mère de l’ordre àVoiron, en Isère, est une représentation magnifiquede l’édifice de l’époque.

Restaurée une première fois par Henri de Robervalentre 1905 et 1935, le domaine est découvert en1962 par l’entraîneur de chevaux de course FrançoisMathet qui y trouvera le havre de paix qu’ilrecherchait pour y élever des pur-sang en toutesécurité et à l’abri des regards.

Aujourd’hui demeure une habitation principale de1 350 m2, mélange harmonieux de pièces voûtéeset de fortifications d’origine, de restaurations enpierre dans le goût médiéval, et de grandes piècesde réception dans le style des hôtels particuliersparisiens du XIXe siècle : deux salons, deux salles àmanger, une salle de billard, une grande cuisinefamiliale, sept chambres et salles de bainsattenantes, une chambre pour le personnel.

In addition to a guest apartment which is separatefrom the main building, the old 17th century windmillhas also been converted into living quarters. A farmmanager’s house and a caretaker’s lodge completethe set-up. A further 340m2 is available fordevelopment. The heated swimming pool is alsodiscreetly situated behind the remains of thefortifications.

François Mathet, the French champion trainer inevery year from 1957 to 1982, bought Bourgfontainein 1962. He reasoned that the monks hadn’t settledrandomly in this hilly clearing. He also felt thatNormandy offered few advantages in terms of thequality of its pastures, without forgetting theproximity of Chantilly.

He transformed the agricultural nature of theproperty by tailoring its needs to the breeding ofracehorses. The paddocks were adaptedaccordingly and this was followed by theconstruction of three stabling areas and foalingbarns. This breeding operation, whose origins dateto the mid-1960s, occupied a top ten position in thenational hit parade from 1978 to 1989.

François Mathet, l’entraîneur tête de liste en Francesans interruption de 1957 à 1982, achèteBourgfontaine en 1962. Il était convaincu que lesmoines ne s’étaient pas installés dans cette clairièrevallonnée par hasard et que la Normandie n'offraitque peu d’avantages au regard de la qualité desherbages et de la proximité de Chantilly.

Il transformera la partie agricole en créant despaddocks adaptés à l’élevage du cheval de coursesen construisant trois stations de boxes et des boxesde poulinage. L’élevage mis en place au milieu desannées soixante se hisse parmi le top ten deséleveurs français dès 1978, pour conserver cesclassements jusqu’en 1989.

The influence of horses bearing the made inBourgfontaine label has impacted far beyond theconfines of first generation homebreds..

Following on from Sakura Reiko (Prix Morny, Gr. I –1986) and Top Sunrise (Prix Royal Oak, Gr. I – 1989),both the result of pure Mathet crosses, numerousbloodlines emanating from Bourgfontaine haveresulted in other classic winners. Their influenceendures to this day and includes:

� Marie d’Argonne: her first product was the highclass stallion Polar Falcon, whose twenty-eightstakes winners include the Coronation Stakes (Gr. I) heroine Exclusive, the Premio Roma (Gr. I)winners Shibuni's Falcon and Sunstrach, and,above all, the Nunthorpe Stakes (Gr.1) winningPivotal. The latter is among the top European siresand his sons, Captain Rio, Excellent Art, Falco,Kyllachy and Siyouni, have all generated Groupone winners. She is also the second dam of the topsire of 2016 Le Havre, who has the distinction ofachieving something very rare: namely by siring thedual classic winning pair Avenir Certain and theunbeaten La Cressonnière.

� Primula is the dam of Sakura Reiko (Prix Morny,Gr. I – 1986), and the respective grandam andgreat grandam of Top Sunrise (Prix Royal Oak,Gr. I – 1989) and Marienbard (Prix de l’Arc deTriomphe, Gr. I – 2002). She is the source of 20 stakes winners, including four Group onewinners on the flat and two classic winningjumpers. The 2016 wins of Hurricane Red in theOslo Cup (Gr. IIII) and Apex King in an AscotListed race are further proof of her far-reachinginfluence.

� Marie D’Irlande: she is the dam of Sierra Madre(Prix Marcel Boussac, Gr. I – 1993 and PrixVermeille Gr. I – 1994). She is also the grandamof Al Jabr (Prix de la Salamandre, Gr. I – 1998,Juddmonte Lockinge Stakes, Gr. I – 1999 andSussex Stakes, Gr. I – 1999).

After the death of François Mathet in 1983, his twosons Melchior-François and Hubert, took over therunning of the breeding operation. However, in1989 the entire broodmare stock was sold at arenowned dispersal sale.

Hubert Mathet bought the whole property in 1995and, since then, he has boarded around 15broodmares there, together with their foals andyearlings, on behalf of third parties. The modusoperandi of this is fully in line with the traditionalmethods of François Mathet.

Through the season, the filly Laurens, born andbred on the Bourgfontaine land, has won the FilliesMile Stakes (Gr. I) at Newmarket in 2017, finishedsecond in the 1,000 Guineas (Gr. I), again atNewmarket and has just won the Gurkha CoolmorePrix Saint-Alary (Gr. I) at Longchamp in preparationfor the Prix de Diane in which she runs this Sundaythe 17th June 2018 at Chantilly.

Hubert Mathet then embarked on a professionalcareer abroad over ten years ago, having decidedthat it was to time for Bourgfontaine to embrace anew owner who would enjoy the exceptionalfeatures offered by the property.

Hubert Mathet racheta la totalité de la propriété en1995 et a depuis lors entretenu une activité depension pour le compte de tiers, où une quinzainede poulinières, leurs foals et leurs yearlings sontélevés dans la plus pure tradition de ce qui avait étémis en place par François Mathet.

Au cours de cette saison, la pouliche Laurens(Siyouni), née et élevée sur les terres deBourgfontaine, a gagné les Fillies Mile Stakes (Gr. I)à Newmarket en 2017, a fini seconde des 1 000Guinées (Gr. I), toujours à Newmarket, et vient degagner le Gurkha Coolmore Prix Saint-Alary (Gr. I)à Longchamp, en préparation du Prix de DianeLongines qu'elle courra vraisemblablement cedimanche 17 juin 2018 à Chantilly.

Together with his spouse, he instigated veryimportant restoration and conversion works of themain property. The warm and elegant décor hasalso provided an idyllic setting for the bringing upof their children during the last 25 years.

The differing soil types, gardens, paddocks andagricultural facilities have all been scrupulouslymaintained by respecting the quality of the fields.This has been accompanied by an attentiveapproach to the architectural aspects.

The intact walls surrounding the property are 4kmin length and exude a feeling of both security andcomfort. In fact, the ancient monastery ofBourgfontaine, beyond the mere confines of its ownwalls, is surrounded by lands used for agriculturalpurposes, and the 13,000ha Villers-Cotterêts forestwhich enjoys protected status. It therefore presentsthe sizeable advantage of having just two veryconservative ‘neighbours’ metaphorically speaking,which also provide an important environmentalprotective barrier: an aspect which is very rareconsidering its proximity to Paris. Finally, the onlytwo access points to the property guaranteeintimacy and discretion and are fully in keeping withthe immediate surroundings.

Chantilly and its Les Aigles training centre are anhour’s drive away and the local train station has adirect link to the Gare du Nord (Paris) andconsequently the Eurostar.

The town of Villers-Cotterêts (pop 11,000) is withina 6kms reach of Bourgfontaine and boasts:healthcare facilities, schools, supermarkets, banks,post offices, restaurants and so forth.

The Château of François 1st, which was privy to thesigning of the Ordinance of Villers-Cotterêts in1539, is the subject of ambitious restoration project,which will be complemented by a centre whichpromotes Francophone values. Looking at thebigger picture, tourists can visit numerous historicalsites and monuments in the region – taking intoaccount that Compiègne and Senlis are just over 30kms from Bourgfontaine. �

II PA) at Toulouse, Shomoos Athbah (BurningSand) made a winning return in the The Royal Cavalryof Oman Aro Cup (Gr. III PA) at Windsor. Sheaccounted for Zayin Angkor Centurion (Dahess),among those who raced prominently in the earlystages, and the former Thomas Fourcy runner AlChammy (Nizam) over the 1,600 meters trip. Held-upin last place by the Irish rider Tadhg O’Shea, thecombination bided their time before beginning aforward move 400 meters from the wire. Zayin Angkor Centurion made a race of it but wasunable to keep tabs on the winner. Al Chammy kept onfor third. The Spanish capital hosted the ninth WorldConference of the Racing Purebred Arabian from May1st to May 4th. Under the patronage of His HighnessSheikh Mansoor Bin Zayed Al Nahyan, almost 400 delegates representing 80 different countriesattended workshops relating to subjects such asbreeding, nutrition and the role of the media.

JOCKEYS’ WEIGHTS AND THE NEED

FOR INSURANCE

Richard Mullen, in his ambassadorial role regardingrepresenting the Festival of Sheikh Mansour,underlined the usefulness of the work undertaken byJohn Moores University. He said that this body hasbeen instrumental in changing the attitude of anumber of his weighing room colleagues in relationto the notion of 'having to make the weight'. As aresult, many jockeys have adopted a moreprofessional approach to nutrition, and in line withwhat we come to expect from athletes. Dr. Jamal Houtsummed this up in a nutshell with the phrase: “Whatto eat and how to eat it.” Emphasis was also placedon the benefits of minerals and vitamins as regardsenabling jockeys to maintain a stable weight.

Having had a leg amputated as a result of anaccident, South African trainer Ernst Oertel stressedthe need for good insurance cover. The jockeys XavierZiani and Richard Mullen added that the nature oftheir profession made obtaining adequate cover fromthe insurance companies difficult. Many opined thatstable staff, and not only jockeys, should enjoy thetwin benefits of full and lasting insurance cover.

THE URGENT NEED FOR THE HARMONISATION

OF THE RULES

Even if jockeys are able to familiarise themselves withthe racing rules of different countries via the internet,there is a feeling that rules regarding the use of thewhip, fines and suspensions need harmonising.Numerous delegates asked the International Festivalof the Racing of Arabian horses of Sheikh MansoorBin Zayed Al Nahyan, and the InternationalFederation of Arabian Horse Racing Authorities(IFAHR), to undertake work in this direction. The vetStephano Danieri pointed out that the use of the whipdoesn’t impact negatively on a horse’s physique. Inthe absence of proof to the contrary, numerousdelegates suggested the starting point of what isseen as a necessary standardisation of the rulesshould revolve initially around the use of the whip.

ALL ROADS NOW LEAD TO ROMANIA

The conference ended with the traditional handingover ceremony and the announcement regarding thenext country which will host the conference in 2019.After Abu Dhabi acted as the very first host, the eventhas done the rounds after taking in The Hague, Berlin,Toulouse, London, Warsaw, Rome, Marrakesh andMadrid. Bucharest now takes over the baton regardingstaging the tenth edition of the conference, when thefinest experts in the domain of Purebred Arabians willconverge in the Romanian capital next year. �

Même si les jockeys peuvent s’informer sur lesrèglements en vigueur dans les différents pays grâceà internet, le besoin de standardiser les règlesconcernant l’utilisation de la cravache, les amendeset les suspensions se ressent. De nombreux déléguésont demandé au Festival international de courses dechevaux arabes du cheikh Mansour bin Zayed AlNahyan, ainsi qu’à la Fédération internationale descourses de pur-sang arabes (Ifahr) d’œuvrer dans cesens. Le vétérinaire Stephano Daneri a d’ailleursrappelé que l’utilisation de la cravache ne nuisait pasà l’intégrité physique de l’animal. Toutefois, commeil n'existe pas d'étude prouvant cette innocuité, ungrand nombre de délégués a estimé que le point dedépart de cette nécessaire standardisation devraitcommencer avec l’utilisation de la cravache.

DIRECTION LA ROUMANIE

La conférence s’est achevée par le traditionnelpassage de témoin et l’annonce de la ville quiaccueillera la prochaine édition, en 2019. Après AbuDhabi (édition inaugurale), La Haye, Berlin, Toulouse,Londres, Varsovie, Rome, Marrakech et Madrid,Bucarest sera la ville hôte de la dixième édition et lesmeilleurs experts du pur-sang arabe vont convergervers la capitale roumaine l’an prochain. �

Jean de Roualle. – It was a bit complicated as thehorses arrived at the same time as I did – and thenew arrivals from France were all sporting theirwinter coats. I had few runners and only managedto win one race so it wasn’t the best of seasons.

The French Purebred Arabian. – Comment s’estpassée votre arrivée aux Émirats ?

Jean de Roüalle. – C’était un peu compliqué carles chevaux sont arrivés en même temps que moi.Ils venaient de France et avaient encore leur poild’hiver. J’ai eu peu de partants et je n’ai gagnéqu’une course. C’était donc vraiment une saison endemi-teinte.

However, didn’t the results improve markedlythe following season?

That’s true as Loraa (Mawood) won the H.H. ThePresident Cup (Gr. I PA). It was source of greatsatisfaction as it was my first Group I PA success inthe UAE. It is ranked as one of the three big eventsof the UAE season in tandem with the DubaiKahayla Classic and the Sheikh Zayed Bin Sultan AlNahyan Jewel Crown (Gr. I. PA).

After saddling seven winners in the 2016-17season, it must have been immensely satisfyingwhen you improved on that score by trainingeleven winners in 2017-18…

Yes, particularly as I don’t train many horsesalthough I think that will change. Rmmas (Mahabb),a full brother to Joudh and Mabrooka, has donewell. He is unbeaten in three starts for the yard thisyear, including the Liwa Oasis (Gr. II PA) and the Al Ruwais (Gr. III PA). He is a 1,200 to 1,400 meterstype but I do think he will stay a little further. Onemust also mention Ziyadd (Bibi de Carrère), awinner at Listed PA level in Italy, and who won theAl Maktoum Challenge Round III (Gr. I PA) for thestable at Meydan. He subsequently disappointed inthe Dubai Kahayla Classic (Gr. I PA). However, hetravelled badly after the air conditioning system inthe van broke down. We are going to ensure thatthings go right for him next season.

I believe you are based at Al Ain?

Affirmative. Sheikh Mansoor Bin Zayed Al Nahyanhas been responsible for building brand newfacilities there. It’s a place he holds dear as it’s hisbirthplace and where his family are from.

Après sept victoires en 2016-2017, vous venezd’en signer onze lors de la saison 2017-2018.Une belle satisfaction ?

Oui, surtout que je n’ai pas encore beaucoup dechevaux, même si je pense que cela va évoluer. J’ainotamment eu le propre frère de Joudh et deMabrooka, qui s’appelle Rmmas (Mahabb). Il acouru trois fois pour moi cette année, pour trois victoires, dont le Liwa Oasis (Gr. II PA) et l’AlRuwais (Gr. III PA). C’est un cheval de 1 200 mètres,1 400 mètres, mais je pense que nous pourrons lerallonger un peu. On peut citer également Ziyadd(Bibi de Carrère), un cheval qui avait gagné uneListed PA en Italie et avec lequel j’ai enlevé l’AlMaktoum Challenge Round III (Gr. I PA) à Meydan.C’est un très bon cheval. Il a un peu déçu ensuitedans la Dubai Kahayla Classic (Gr. I PA), mais il avaitmal voyagé, ayant subi une panne de l’airconditionné dans le camion. Nous allons faire ensorte que cela se passe bien la saison prochaine.

Vous êtes installé à Al Ain ?

Oui, le cheikh Mansour bin Zayed Al Nahyan y a faitconstruire des installations toutes neuves. De plus,ce site a une signification particulière pour luipuisqu’il y est né, ainsi que toute sa famille.

They are very attached to Al Ain, which is bestdescribed as an oasis, and one devoid of buildingsof any description over two storeys high. It’s a verytranquil place and forms part of a ‘perfect’ trianglewhich links up with Dubai and Abu Dhabi, as around140kms separates the three places. However, there’sno denying that it’s hot.

From a personal standpoint, how have youadapted?

I adapt very quickly and, a while back, I spent timein the US and other countries learning my craft. Iwas even based in Morocco for a four year periodfrom 2011. The ‘adaption’ process is going well and,the opportunity to train for Sheikh Mansoor BinZayed Al Nahyan is an exceptional one ! It’s a realopportunity. My current burning ambition is toensure that the number of horses I have in trainingincreases considerably. This is because theforthcoming season (2018-19) will be longer havingbeen extended from October 26th to April 12th,when there will be four extra meetings. I’mconfident that the number of horses that I have intraining will eventually increase at a rate which willenable me to compete with the 'big guns' of thetraining ranks. I’m up for the challenge but in a spiritwhich embraces both respect and sportsmanship.

Ils sont donc très attachés à Al Ain, qui est une oasistrès calme, sans buildings ni maisons dépassantdeux étages, et qui forme un triangle parfait avecDubaï et Abu Dhabi. Il doit y avoir 140 km entre lestrois villes. Toutefois, il y fait chaud.

D’un point de vue personnel, comment votreadaptation s’est-elle déroulée ?

Vous savez, je m’adapte assez vite. Il y a un certaintemps, j'ai effectué des stages aux États-Unis etdans plusieurs autres pays. Je suis également partiquatre ans au Maroc en 2011. L’adaptation se passebien et une opportunité comme celle d’entraînerpour le cheikh Mansour bin Zayed Al Nahyan estexceptionnelle. C’est une grande chance ! Àprésent, je souhaite ardemment que le nombre dechevaux que j’ai à l’entraînement augmente demanière substantielle car le programme s’étendra du26 octobre au 12 avril à partir de la saison prochaine.Il y aura quatre réunions supplé mentaires. J’aiconfiance dans le fait que mon effectif augmente afin d’aller concurrencer les "big guns", les grosentraîneurs d’ici. Je suis prêt à en découdre, avecbeaucoup de respect et de sportivité.

Do you plan on raiding Europe with any of yourhorses?

It was part of my original plan but this has yet tomaterialise. However, if the number of horses I havein training were to increase then why not? There areraces in Turkey and Britain to consider, and I wouldbe prepared transfer around ten horses of GroupPA standard from Al Ain to France with a view totaking in the spring-summer period. It is up to themanagement to decide. However, we are wellequipped here in every sense when it comes towintering our horses: temperatures aren’t too highand we have the necessary swimming pools. It’sbetter than being in Europe where the mercury canplummet below zero. The horses look very well andthe climate helps a lot. We may go abroad withsome of our horses in between seasons which issomething Alban de Mieulle does. It sounds funand could prove to be an interesting challenge.

If you were given the green light in this area,would there be any hesitancy on your part?

Believe me, I would embrace the project full-on.

How vital is this?

It’s the constant bugbear of the training professionas we are somewhat reliant on the quality of thehorses entrusted to our care. You need good horsesto win good races. It’s also essential to understandwhat course of action to take when horses gowrong, so as to arrive at the right solutions andprogress accordingly.

Comptez-vous venir en Europe avec quelqueséléments ?

C’était initialement prévu mais cela n’a pas puencore se faire. Si mon effectif augmente, pourquoipas ? Il y a des courses en Turquie et en Angleterrenotamment. J’enverrais bien d'Al Ain une dizainede chevaux de Groupe PA pour passer le printempset l’été en France. La décision reviendra aumanagement. En plus, ici, en hiver, on a tout ce qu’ilfaut pour que les chevaux évoluent bien. Lestempératures ne sont pas trop élevées, il y a despiscines et c’est mieux que d’être en Europe sousdes températures négatives. Les chevaux ici sontmagnifiques, le climat aide beaucoup. On pourraitdonc sortir quelques chevaux à l’intersaison,comme le fait par exemple Alban de Mieulle. C’estun truc amusant, un challenge intéressant.

Si vous avez le feu vert, vous n’hésiterez doncpas ?

Faites-moi confiance, j’appuierai sur l’accélérateur !

C’est primordial…

C’est l’éternel problème des entraîneurs. Noussommes un peu dépendants de la qualité deschevaux que l'on nous confie. Il faut de bonséléments pour gagner de belles courses.Comprendre ce qui ne va pas chez un cheval estégalement important, afin de pouvoir trouver dessolutions et avancer.

However, you’ve managed to do this quickly?

I adopted a low profile on arrival as it’s in my nature.And I was never going to openly trumpet myachievements in terms of the numbers of winners Ihave trained. Thanks to the hands-on approach ofSheikh Mansoor Bin Zayed Al Nahyan, confidencehas soared. He also realised that was I was able totrain winners and that I have a certain experience.It’s all part of a fairly long term process.

In your second season here, you enjoyedPresident Cup success with Loraa. Do you thinkthat you sent out a strong message?

Yes. I arrived here all guns blazing and with thelights flashing amber (laughing). No, seriously, it’sthe transient nature of our profession, as one dayyou are the best because you have won a big race.However, the euphoria can quickly go by thewayside. It was great occasion and I really enjoyedthe moment. The mare has had a lot of problemsand it took fourteen months of work to get herback.

Je suis arrivé ici en adoptant un profil bas, c'estdans mon tempérament. Je n’allais pas mettre unpanneau avec mon nombre de victoires à l’écurie.Grâce au management direct du cheikh Mansourbin Zayed Al Nahyan, nous avons pu prendreconfiance. Il a également vu que je pouvais gagnerdes courses et que j’avais une petite expérience.C'est tout un processus, assez long.

Dès votre deuxième saison, vous remporteztoutefois la President Cup avec Loraa. Est-ce unsignal fort que vous avez envoyé ?

Oui, je suis arrivé toutes voiles dehors et lesclignotants allumés (rires). Non, plus sérieusement,les choses peuvent être éphémères. Un jour, vousêtes le meilleur parce que vous avez gagné unebelle course, et puis ensuite, l’euphorie retombevite. C’était un moment génial. J’ai vraimentsavouré ce jour-là. La jument avait connu beaucoupde problèmes et nous avions travaillé quatorze moispour tout régler. Alors la voir gagner dans un canter,c’était une grande joie, même si elle était déjàlauréate de Groupe I PA. Le personnel de l'écurieavait effectué un travail extraordinaire.

So to see her win in a canter, even if she was aprevious Group I winner, was the source of great joy.The work done by my stable staff was extraordinary.Last season the overriding feeling was that she wasno longer in love with the racing game, and that itis why she was retired to the stud. However, to winthe President Cup was extraordinary. To see a horselike Rmmas win three races is equally gratifying. Asconnections were able to see for themselves theprogress made by a horse which had never won aGroup PA race before. Believe me, there are goodhorses here.

Are you happy in your current role?

Absolutely as training horses for Sheikh MansoorBin Zayed Al Nahyan is something extraordinary. �

Toutefois, la saison dernière, elle a montré qu’elleen avait assez et elle est partie au haras commepoulinière. Mais la President Cup a été quelquechose d’extraordinaire ! De même, voir un chevalcomme Rmmas remporter trois épreuves estquelque chose de très gratifiant. L’entourage a puvoir les progrès accomplis par un cheval qui n’avaitjamais gagné de Groupe PA auparavant. Et ici, il ya de bons chevaux, croyez-moi.

Êtes-vous un entraîneur heureux ?

Tout à fait car entraîner pour le cheikh Mansour bin Zayed Al Nahyan est quelque chosed'extrêmement gratifiant. �

AN ACTION-PACKED FINISH

True to her running style, Wadeeaa tried to makeevery post a winning one in this small field. AlGhashamiya (General) and Karabosse de Ghazaltracked the pacesetter with Joudh, who can lay upwith the pace, waiting patiently in the rear. Despitethe cut and thrust nature of the latter stages,Wadeeaa and Karabosse de Ghazal were locked in astruggle in the dying throes of the race with bothresponding to the surge of Joudh on the inside.However, it was Karabosse de Ghazal who producedthe decisive final burst which enabled her to nailWadeeaa in the final strides.

SHOWING HER TRUE COLORS

Didier Guillemin had every season to be happy withthe progress made by his charge saying: "She hasagain won well and we weren’t quite sure how shewould cope in this grade. Karabosse de Ghazalproved today that she is among the best of the four-year-old fillies. She was often unlucky last seasonalthough I’m not looking for excuses. She began hercareer with a creditable third behind two good filliesat Dax. However, she showed nothing on hersubsequent two starts. She even went close to fallingat Mont-de-Marsan before running no sort of a raceat Toulouse at the end of the year. However, that’sracing." Regarding the filly’s future he added: "Wearen’t sure where she will go next but, if there’s aren’tany fillies’ only races, she will measure herself againstthe boys." Concerning the performance of the third-placed Joudh, his take was: "She had a good racebefore coming unstuck. Olivier Peslier told me thatshe was a bit of a rascal. She picked up again a bit –just when her rider thought she was going to gothrough with her effort and win. It was still a goodeffort and she should go on from this. I’ve haddifficulty conditioning her as she hasn’t had the bestof winters."

Didier Guillemin pouvait être satisfait des progrès desa pensionnaire : « Elle a de nouveau bien gagné.Nous ne savions pas si elle était capable de semesurer à une telle opposition. Karabosse de Ghazala prouvé aujourd’hui qu’elle faisait partie desmeilleures pouliches de 4 ans. Elle a souvent étémalheureuse l’an dernier, même si je ne lui cherchepas d’excuses. Elle avait débuté par une troisièmeplace à Dax, proprement, derrière deux bonnespouliches. Puis, lors de ses deux sorties suivantes,nous n’avions rien vu. La pouliche avait même évitéla chute de peu à Mont-de-Marsan, avant unemauvaise sortie à Toulouse en fin d’année. Cela faitpartie des courses. » Pour la suite de son programme,« nous ne savons pas encore où elle ira. S’il n’y a pasd'épreuves pour elle contre les femelles, elle courraavec les mâles. » Concernant Joudh, arrivéetroisième, il a déclaré : « Elle a eu un bon passageavant de coincer. Olivier Peslier m’a dit qu’elle étaitun brin coquine. Elle s’est reprise un peu alors queson jockey pensait qu’elle venait pour le faire. Jean Cambon handed over the reins of the Harasde Ghazal to his daughter Rose Cambon, andKarabosse de Ghazal rose to the occasion of this‘handover’ by taking the Qatar Prix de l'Élevage ingood style. Her success is the result of a familypassion handed down from father to daughter.

Karabosse de Ghazal (Munjiz) has proved to be oneof the revelations of the first-half of the PurebredArabian racing season. She runs in the colours of herbreeders and will certainly be among the leadingfancies for Group I PA races at the backend. The lightof this breeding operation also shines brightly thanksto the promising Citronnier de Ghazal (Madjani), whorecently won in good style at Toulouse. RoseCambon, Karabosse de Ghazal’s breeder, told us: "Iwould say that Karabosse de Ghazal’s start to the 2018season has given us great pleasure and is a reflectionof the profession of a breeder and namely: lots ofwork, patience and constant awareness. Karabosse de Ghazal (Munjiz) est l’une desrévélations de la première partie de saison 2018 chezles pur-sang arabes. Elle court sous les couleurs de seséleveurs et sera assurément l’une des favorites pourles Groupes I PA de fin d’année. Cet élevage sesignale aussi avec le prometteur Citronnier de Ghazal(Madjani) qui a gagné dans un bon style récemment àToulouse. The French Purebred Arabian. – How did you getinto breeding?

Jean Cambon. – I started in the 1980s and graduallyacquired a few mares who were best suited to thebreeding shed. Fairly quickly, the results on theracetrack started to speak for themselves, and theyhelped underpin the success of the breedingoperation. These initial successes encouraged me totake this particular direction. Having taken these steps,I managed to make the enterprise work by operatingon commercial lines. I have the support and takeadvice from my partner, Renée-Laure Koch. We runtwo different breeding operations but we exchangeideas which provides the necessary stimulation. A littlewhile after I embraced the racing sector more fully inthe 1990s, the business really took off. Consequentlyour breeding operation expanded as a result of thepositive evolution of the market place. In 2018, twelvemares were covered with a prime view to producingpotential winners. However, some horses can also begeared towards endurance races.

How did you source your foundation mare, Key duCassou, who had an unbelievable pedigree?

I bought her through Renée-Laure Koch and shecomes from the great French bloodline of Nevada II(Djanor). At the time, I also bought Chérie d’Espiens(Chéri Bibi) and Best (Besbes). However, at presentI’m concentrating on the bloodlines of Key duCassou. The mares from other bloodlines lines haveeither been leased to or entrusted to the care ofrelatives on a co-breeding basis. Key du Cassou hada sturdy frame and was both bay and of solidconstitution: a bit like those girls from the other sideof the tracks. She proved a big hit at stud as herdescendants have gone on to shine at black typelevel, and notably Kiss de Ghazal (Dormane): thewinner of nine races including the Qatar FrenchArabian Breeders’ Challenge, the Arabian Trophy andEnglish Derby for Purebred Arabians (Gr. Is PA); Kaoede Ghazal (Kesberoy) won the Coupe Goffs Franceand Boum de Ghazal (Zippy Al Maury) was successfulin the Prix Dormane (Gr. III PA). Chamade de Ghazal(Dormane) also did the ‘line’ proud in the Prix NevadaII (Gr. III PA)

How have you managed to sustain such a longcareer as an elected representative and combineit with your breeding operation?

For approximately 30 years, I worked as an electedrepresentative at communal level [editor's note:Mayor of Nègrepelisse, pop. 6,000, from 1995 to 2014]and then as part of the Conseil General.

The French Purebred Arabian. – Comment avez-vous commencé à élever ?

Jean Cambon. – J’ai commencé dans les années1980. Progressivement, j’ai fait l’acquisition dequelques juments plutôt destinées à produire deschevaux de course. Assez rapidement, j’ai eu lachance de sortir plusieurs bons sujets qui ont enquelque sorte lancé l’élevage. Ces premiers succèsm’ont encouragé à poursuivre dans cette direction.Chemin faisant, j’arrive à faire fonctionner l’entrepriseen commercialisant ma production. Je suis soutenuet conseillé par ma compagne, Renée-Laure Koch.Nos élevages sont distincts, mais nous dialoguons etil y a une émulation réciproque. Peu après monarrivée dans la filière course, au début des années1990, le commerce a véritablement décollé. Et nousavons ainsi pu développer l’élevage en nousinscrivant dans une évolution positive du marché. En2018, douze juments ont été saillies, avec pourpremier objectif les courses. Néanmoins, certainschevaux peuvent aussi faire carrière en endurance.

Comment avez-vous trouvé Key du Cassou, votrejument de base, qui avait un pedigree remarquable ?

Je l’ai acquise par l’intermédiaire de Renée-LaureKoch. C’est la grande lignée française de Nevada II(Djanor). À cette époque, j’avais également achetéChérie d’Espiens (Chéri Bibi) et Best (Besbes), maisà présent, j’ai concentré mon élevage sur ladescendance de Key du Cassou. J’ai placé lesjuments des autres lignées chez des proches aveclesquels j’élève en association ou qui sont en location.Key du Cassou était une jument charpentée. Elle étaitbaie et solide, un peu comme ses filles d’ailleurs. Auharas, elle nous a donné de grandes satisfactions avecune descendance qui s’est illustrée au niveau blacktype, notamment Kiss de Ghazal (Dormane), lauréatede neuf courses, dont le Qatar French ArabianBreeders' Challenge, l’Arabian Trophy et le DerbyAnglais des Pur-sang Arabes (Grs I PA), Kaoe deGhazal (Kesberoy), lauréat de la Coupe Goffs France,Boum de Ghazal (Zippy Al Maury), gagnant du PrixDormane (Gr. III PA), Chamade de Ghazal (Dormane),lauréate du Prix Nevada II (Gr. III PA)…

En parallèle de l’élevage, comment avez-vous pumener de front une longue carrière d’élu ?

Pendant une trentaine d’années, j’ai officié en tantqu’élu, au niveau communal [maire de Nègrepelisse,6 000 habitants, de 1995 à 2014, ndlr] et au niveau duConseil Général. J’avais donc du personnel pourm’aider à l’élevage.


KARABOSSE DE GHAZAL, A STORY OF PASSION AND TRANSMISSION

So I had staff who helped me run the stud. Sinceretirement, I have the time to play a full part in thisactivity again, as I previously had to hand over the reinsas regards running it to my daughter Rose Cambon.She also works as a psychologist for the elderly, and Ihelp her because she has another job besides that ofbeing a horse breeder. It allows me to take time doingsomething that I am passionate about and thatsometimes gives me a few satisfactions!

Karabosse de Ghazal is improving at a rate ofknots and has gone up 5kgs in the ratings on theevidence of just one run. How do you explain suchan improvement as a four-year-old?

She ran for the first time at Dax and took the thirdplace in a quality field as the winner, Easter de Faust(Mahaab), went on to win at Group I PA level.Karabosse de Ghazal was then unfortunate in her nexttwo races at Mont-de-Marsan and Toulouse. She wasbadly hampered in both races and jockeyship has alsobeen a factor. Whatever the case may be, she hasmade big strides forward since. Karabosse de Ghazalis a late maturing sort and probably benefited fromher being put out to grass at the end of the year.Under Didier Guillemin’s watch that she is reachingfull physical maturity. She was still a little too light-framed in 2017. She has also evolved mentally and,despite getting bumped in the Qatar Prix del'Élevage, she held on and found the energy levels totake first place.

Another discerning feature regarding Karabossede Ghazal is that she is in-bred 2x3 to Kesberoy.What was the thinking behind this?

This bloodline is… my passion. I am most certainlyone of the breeders who have most tapped into theKesberoy (Saint Laurent) bloodline. At first, I used hima lot as a stallion. Most of my mares share his bloodand, via Munjiz (Kesberoy), I’ve been able toreconnect with this great stallion. There are severalexamples of the ‘Kesberoy’ name appearing twice insome of the pedigrees of our homebreds.

Will Karabosse de Ghazal form part of yourbroodmare band one day?

I don’t know although we’ve had to deal withnumerous enquiries. However, we’ve taken thedecision not to sell her. She is being aimed at a bigrace for 4-year-old fillies: the Qatar Total ArabianTrophy des Juments (Gr. I PA). She will almost certainlyhave a prep race in between. The idea of retaining aGroup winner for stud purposes is, of course, veryappealing.

Depuis mon départ à la retraite, j’ai à nouveau letemps de m’investir personnellement dans cetteactivité. En sachant que j’ai transmis l’élevage à mafille, Rose Cambon. Je l’épaule car, en plus del'élevage, elle exerce une autre profession[psychologue auprès des personnes âgées]. Cela mepermet de consacrer du temps à une activité qui mepassionne et qui me donne parfois quelquessatisfactions !

Karabosse de Ghazal a connu une progressionspectaculaire, bondissant de 5 kg en l’espaced’une course. Comment expliquer une telleamélioration à l’âge de 4 ans ?

Elle a couru pour la première fois à Dax en se classanttroisième d’un lot de qualité dominé par Easter deFaust (Mahabb), future lauréat de Groupe I PA.Karabosse de Ghazal a ensuite été malheureuse àdeux reprises, à Mont-de-Marsan et à Toulouse. Dansles deux cas, elle a été réellement gênée. Quoi qu’ilen soit, elle a effectivement beaucoup progressé.Karabosse de Ghazal est tardive et a certainement tiréprofit d’un séjour au pré en fin d’année. On voit quesous la férule de Didier Guillemin, elle est en traind’atteindre sa maturité physique, alors qu’elle étaitencore un peu légère en 2017. Elle a aussi évoluémentalement, et malgré une bousculade dans leQatar Prix de l'Élevage, elle n’a rien lâché et a sutrouver la force pour décrocher la victoire.

Une autre chose qui interpelle avec Karabosse deGhazal, c’est le fait qu’elle est inbreed 2x3 surKesberoy. Pourquoi avoir réalisé un tel croisement ?

Ce courant de sang… c’est mon dada. Je suiscertainement l’un des éleveurs qui ont le plusemployé la lignée de Kesberoy (Saint Laurent). Audépart, je l’ai lui-même beaucoup utilisé en tantqu’étalon. Une grande partie de mes juments porteson sang et, avec Munjiz (Kesberoy), je suis doncrevenu à ce grand étalon. Plusieurs chevaux de maproduction ont d'ailleurs des pedigrees dans lesquelsle nom de Kesberoy est mentionné à deux reprises.

Karabosse de Ghazal fera-t-elle un jour partie devotre groupe de poulinières ?

Je l'ignore. Nous avons déjà reçu beaucoup dedemandes, mais nous avons fait le choix de ne pasencore la vendre. Son objectif, c’est la grande coursedes pouliches de 4 ans, le Qatar Total Arabian Trophydes Juments (Gr. I PA), avec certainement une étapeintermédiaire préalablement à cette échéance. L’idéede garder au haras une gagnante de Groupe est biensûr séduisante.



However, there are times when offers are hard to turndown. Her pedigree offers numerous ‘breeding’possibilities as it is devoid of ‘Amer’ blood. It’s one ofmy aims and I’m of the opinion that those breederswhich stick to the formula of pedigrees which areperforming well and essentially French, and thereforeeasy to breed from, will be rewarded in the future.

Your daughter Rose has taken over the running ofthe stud. Is this a guarantee of its sustainability forall the work you put in during the last decade?

She owns the breeding operation and I’m only herassistant! There are no hard and fast rules when itcomes to the domain of the horse. You have to dealwith a whole plethora of details and, to run a stud ofa certain size, requires a huge ‘personal’ investment.We try to organise ourselves the best way we can andmy daughter’s involvement in stud matters revolvesmainly around weekends.

What trainers do you work with?

Mrs Koch and I work with the same trainers andnamely Didier Guillemin, Damien de Watrigant andÉlisabeth Bernard, and have good relationships withall three. Regarding Karabosse de Ghazal, she is underDidier Guillemin’s watch. He is honest, direct andknows his horses. The competition between thedifferent Purebred Arabian breeding operations inFrance is fierce – being big structures of means andones with first rate broodmares bands at their disposal.We consequently have to be intuitive and showperseverance granted our more limited means.�

Mais parfois, il y a des propositions difficiles à refuser. Ensachant que son pedigree offre de nombreusespossibilités de croisement, étant indemne du sangd’Amer. C’est d’ailleurs l’un des objectifs de monélevage. Je pense que les éleveurs qui auront gardé despedigrees performants et très français, donc faciles àcroiser, en seront récompensés à l’avenir.

Votre fille, Rose, a repris l’élevage. C’est un gagede pérennité pour l’ensemble du travail accomplices dernières décennies…

Désormais, c’est elle la propriétaire de l’élevage. Je nesuis que son assistant ! Il n’y pas de règles établies, degrandes vérités, en matière de chevaux. C’est plus unefoule de détails. Et conduire un élevage d’une certainetaille nécessite un grand investissement personnel.Nous essayons de nous organiser au mieux, et ma filleest surtout présente à l’élevage le week-end.

Avec quels entraîneurs travaillez-vous ?

Madame Koch et moi-même travaillons avec lesmêmes professionnels, c’est-à-dire Didier Guillemin,Damien de Watrigant et Élisabeth Bernard. Nousavons de très bons rapports avec ces trois entraîneurs.Concernant Karabosse de Ghazal, elle est confiée àDidier Guillemin. Il est franc, direct et connaît bien sespensionnaires. La concurrence entre les différentsélevages de pur-sang arabes en France est trèsrelevée, avec de grandes structures qui disposent demoyens et d’une jumenterie de premier plan. Il fautdonc essayer de faire preuve d’intuition et depersévérance, avec nos moyens plus limités. �
