The Foundation of the Crusader States
Aim: To evaluate the impact of the foundation of the Crusader States on the nature, origin and purpose of Crusading
What can you find out?• On Wednesday we’ll be
looking at the foundation of the Crusader states.
• In preparation for this you need to do some ‘pre reading’.
• Books are available from Mrs Plowman in the LRC.
• Use the Philips book (or equivalent if you have it) plus one section from another book.
• Remember to record what you read!
Not quite this many books, but nearly!
Key questions – for guidance• These are provided for
guidance only, you don’t need to work your way through them (although you could).
• What were the crusader states?
• How many were there? How were they set up? When? Who was in charge etc?
• What threats were there to the Crusader States after their foundation?
• How did these states change the nature and purpose of Crusading (think about new aims, look at Crusade of 1101).
• How did these states change the origin of Crusading? Look at who called the next few crusades – how did they differ (did they?) from the First Crusade.
