Beaming with Pride! What a summer to be a Brit although I’d guess that many expats are feeling a bit homesick with all of the celebrations from the Queen’s Jubilee to the Olympics – just incredible and I for one am very proud!

In this issue, we have attempted to really illustrate how Brits through-out the State have been celebrating this summer and I think you will all agree, there’s a lot of British pride these days.

I was fortunate enough to happen upon a contest advertised on facebook by Virgin Atlantic for “A Right Royal Knees Up” street party for The Queen’s Jubilee. There was 48 hours left to illustrate why I was the Queen of throwing British parties and social me-dia… Really? They should have just called me by phone as this contest couldn’t possibly have been more tailor made for anyone. Long story short, I won and had 1 week to put a party together with the fabulous marketing department of Virgin Atlantic.

The hardest part was truly paring the list down to 100 attend-ees but in the end, we certainly had a truly British street party in the heart of downtown Orlando and the fun, not to mention the Pimms, flowed for 6 hours. Had it not been 95 degrees, you might have forgotten where we were.

What fun and what a privilege it was so a big thanks to Virgin Atlantic and our local Mayors for pulling off such a fabulous party in so little time. Virgin please call me anytime you decide to throw a party, Florida has no shortage of fun Brits!

In addition to the unquestionable beautiful beach life it offers, Sarasota is considered one of Florida’s premier cultural centers. There are dozens of performing arts venues, renowned opera, theater and ballet companies, as well as numerous art festivals that attract people from across America and indeed, the world. John Ringling, who became one of the wealthiest men in America through his famous circus, was based in Sarasota and he and his brothers were instrumental in the development of modern Sarasota.

It is not surprising that many British Expa-triates have made Sarasota their home and have found it a good place to do business.

Steve and Diane Adams moved to the US in 2005. Originally landing in New York they relocated to the Sarasota area after three years. Steve, who has spent most of his working life in insurance, set up his own business in 2009. Steve offers a full range of insurance services and has built himself a great reputation in the area.

Year on year his business is growing, mainly coming from referrals from happy clients, and he has a retention rate of over 90%, which is an incredible achievement. Steve finds there is plenty of opportunity to grow his business in the area as there are numerous networking groups and Chambers of Commerce facilitating business and it seems that there is no stopping him.

David Counter, originally from Exeter, moved to Florida twelve years ago. Three years ago he and his wife moved to Sarasota and for the last year he has been a Financial Profession-al Associate for Prudential. Being a Brit, David finds himself uniquely positioned to assist fel-low Expats with their retirement planning and general financial needs.

Away from work, David and his wife find Sarasota a safe and convenient place to live and at only an hours drive away from Tampa International Airport there is plenty of op-portunity to explore. David has noticed a very healthy flow of investment into the area from across the globe. Main Street is home to many

major international companys offices and both the City and private companies are investing heavily in ventures.

The Sarasota British Club has been estab-lished since 2000 and has over 200 members who meet regularly at the clubs very popular and diverse social events. Although the British Club is a social group, members can list their business on the clubs website for no additional fee. Sue Ford, who hails from North London, is serving her second term as the Clubs president and has been on the board for nine years.

The club is in a very healthy financial posi-tion and continues to attract new members who are looking to mix with fellow Brits and make friends. Sue and her colleagues at the club are working hard to attract some younger members to the club and to keep it moving forward.

It seems Sarasota has a lot more to offer than just sunshine and beaches!

I think it’s fair to say that many people’s impression of Sara-sota is that it is a lovely place to live when you retire with great beaches and of course, Florida sunshine. This may be true but that would be doing Sarasota an injustice.

BUSINESS

Page 8: The Florida Standard

8 | Florida Standard

Having been a Florida resi-dent for nearly 8 years, I am now used to the crazy weather we experience. I remember the first time

I got stranded in a summer storm, I was in a supermarket car park and the heavens opened, I ran to my car and was convinced that the giant hailstones would break through the windscreen, the noise was ter-rifying and I had never seen the sky light up with so much lightening. Now officially in the Atlantic Hurricane Season, which runs from June 1st to November 30th, I have to say I have become extremely complacent about Florida’s extreme weather condi-tions, having missed Charley in 2004 and being back in the UK when Wilma hit Cape Romano in 2005. Reading through a recent blog post on the British Consuls Facebook page (UKinUSA Miami), my blasé attitude diminished as I read a harrowing account of Hurricane Andrew, by Philip Grice, who

was the British consul-general in Miami in 1992, when Andrew hit. We often forget that more storms hit Florida than any other US States; since 1851 only 18 hurricane seasons have passed without a known storm impacting the State. Andrew made land-fall on August 24th as a category 5 hurricane, with a landfall intensity of 145 knots. It first hit Home-stead and then made its way through Miami-Dade County. At the time Andrew was the most costly tropical cyclone to hit the States, and is now still the second. But these are the black and white facts, something that we read and process without actually thinking about; on reading Grace’s report, you find yourself first enthralled by the vivid descriptions of events, and are then transported as though were in fact liv-ing through the horrors of Andrew yourself

and the true impact of severe weather really comes crashing home.

The account, which has recently been published by the Miami Herald after the

current consul-general , Kevin McGurgan, discovered the

letter buried in an old file, is written a week after Andrew, and is addressed to the British Consulate in Washington D.C. The

report begins in a very official way, in third person,

documenting the preparations made as news emerged that a storm

was in fact heading towards Florida and was likely to hit the Miami area. As time progresses, and the news about the storm builds, the formal tone turns very informal, the third person is replaced by the first and a mere interest is replaced by sheer incredulity.

After receiving a hurricane warning

on the morning of August 23rd, Grice and his family find themselves in the evacua-tion zone. After sorting out all necessary Consulate business and securing the office, Grice and family decided to observe the compulsory evacuation order, and equipped with radios, torches, candles, food, drink,

strong clothing duvets and heavy bedding and ‘everything that a well prepared family ought to be taking to a hur-ricane evacuation centre’ they made their way to a friend’s house, who resided outside of the predicted path. From about 1am onwards, things start going from bad to worse. First the deafening noise, frightened children, then abso-lute fear. After barricading themselves into an enclosed corridor of what was considered to be a strong, brick built house, which was by that time roofless and windowless, the family could do nothing but try and get through the rest of the night. In Grice’s own words ‘the next three hours take on nightmarish proportions’. Later they learn that a nearby man, grandfather to friends of Grice’s children, was sucked out of his kitchen though a window and thrown onto the road outside. It was probably around this time that many of the 37 victims of the disaster were killed. The report continues to describe the many horrors experienced by the family and the manic craziness of the entire situa-tion becomes fully apparent to the reader. Even more so is the description of the aftermath; the total destruction of people’s homes, the loss of possessions and loved ones and the total disregard for society as shooting and looting break out across the county with the very real threat of martial law close at hand.

Grice, who is now the Mayor of Carmarthen in South Wales, states he wrote the report because he needed people to understand the true devastation of a hurricane, and the real threat of severe weather. For me, this account really did open my eyes, and even though I will not start panicking and shouting about the impending danger of a hurricane hitting, it did make me realize that like everything, preparation is key, and although you can never really be prepared for the unknown, some basic precau-tions now can really make a huge difference should the worst hap-pen. I am also going to make a conscious effort not to ‘tut’ when I have to go a flick the fuse switch or reset the internet router when a storm takes out the power or roll my eyes when visiting family jump at the sound of the nearby thunder. For a full account of Philip Grice’s report as recorded by BABC Miami Executive Director Justin Jones – click here , and then can you please add this link http://www.theflo-ridastandard.com/florida_stan-dard_audio/flstd_august_2012_in-terview_full.mp3

THE CONSUL CORNER

A new year provides new opportuni-ties. This new online journal is a great example of that and I am very honoured to be offered a “corner” of that to write a few words about the year ahead.

Time is already flying by – Hard to believe January is gone. It’s worth setting out the major opportunities taking place across Britain and the US in 2012. We’re thinking about how we in Florida have already contributed to these opportuni-ties, and what else we can do.

2012 promises much. For this year Britain will be at the centre of world sporting and pageantry events and the US at the centre of the political world with the November Presidential elec-tions.

First. The Queen’s Diamond Jubilee. Queen Elizabeth ascended to the throne on 6 February 1952 following the death of her father, King George VI. Her Dia-mond Jubilee –only the second in British history – will be celebrated from 2 – 4

June (the dates of her formal coronation) - in Britain, the Commonwealth and the world. This will be a huge occasion on a par with last year’s wedding of the Duke and Duchess of Cambridge in May last year.

Second. The London 2012 Olympics and Paralympics. Stretching through July and August, the world’s premier sporting event will ensure two months of global attention on Britain and the British people. This represents a unique

Kevin mcgurgan took up his appoint-ment as Her Majesty’s Consul-General in Miami in December 2009.Born in Edinburgh, Scotland, in 1971, Kevin joined the Foreign & Common-wealth Office (FCO) in 1990. He came to Florida from southern Afghanistan where he spent 2008/9 as Deputy Head of the NATO Provincial Reconstruction Team in Helmand province. He worked there with Afghan political and tribal leaders to improve security and prepare the ground for the arrival of the 2nd Marine Expedition-ary Brigade of the US Marine Corps in spring 2009. He was made an Officer of the British Empire (OBE) for this work in the 2010 Queen’s Birthday Honours.Kevin is accompanied by his wife Vicki (also from Scotland), and his two sons, Alexan-der and Michael

and exciting opportunity for Britain to showcase herself and remind the US and the world about ourselves: the world’s 7th largest economy.

Third and finally, the US Presidential elections. Whatever your political persuasion, the razzmatazz and buzz that a Presidential election generates is a sight to behold. Florida will be front and centre. She has always been a battleground state but this year she will host – in Tampa – the Republican National Convention where the Republican Party will choose their nominee for President.

All three events provide a GREAT backdrop for the work of the Orlando and Miami Consulates in 2012. Why is GREAT in capitals? The London 2012 Olympic and Paralympics Games and Diamond Jubilee represent a once-in-a-generation opportunity to promote the UK abroad and help deliver long-term trade and tourism benefits at home in Britain.

GREAT was announced by Prime Minister David Cameron in New York on 21 September 2011, and invites to the world to take a fresh look at everything Britain has to offer. It centres on areas of British excel-lence focusing on reasons to invest in and visit the UK. These areas are Technology and Innovation, Entrepreneurship, Creativity, Knowledge, Green, Heritage, Sport, Shop-ping, Music and Countryside. We want to send out a clear message that Britain is one

of the very best places in the world to visit, live, work, study, invest and do business.

We have already started this campaign in Florida. Last year I hosted Aaron Cook, the UK’s Tae Kwon Do Gold medal prospect at an event. Earlier this month, the Miami Consulate organised a fundraiser for the UK’s Olympic and Paralympics sailing teams who spent the week training in Miami. And later this year, we hope to have Tessa Sanderson, the UK Gold Medal javelin winner visit to help us promote the Games and the UK.

But you don’t need to be a sporting super-star to do your bit and have fun. Somewhat inspired by this summer’s London Olympics and the opportunity to promote US-UK excel-lence in scientific research, I will be running 12 races in 2012 to raise funds for the Diabetes Research Institute and profile for the UK. You can read more – and maybe sponsor me – at www.firstgiving.com/fundraiser/KevinMcGur-gan/Run-a-Month2012.

Orlando has a key role to play here. It has a unique place in the UK/US relationship: for many Britons, visiting the theme parks, it is where their perceptions of the US are formed and vice versa for the many Americans who meet Britons here. I will be talking to the Brit-ish-American Chamber of Commerce about their plans this year, and participating as much as possible. I hope you’ll speak to them as well, and share your thoughts on how they can best promote Britain with this year’s backdrop.

Orlandos hottest sports event of 2012?

WHAT HAS BEEN

This hot ticket event for all the family had been born as an idea to bring respec-tive ex-pats living in Orlando together to represent their native countries in a football match. Build up to the event attracted the usual banter you would expect when pitting two rival countries together in the beautiful game. Thanks to a Facebook page that promoted the event, potential players and their supporters, made it clear that this game was being treated as perhaps more than a friendly and that all members of the each team had better bring their A game. It was getting serious...

I was lucky enough to be part of the team and upon arrival at the park was met by the other players, many I had met through my different social and business circles in Orlando, as well as some new faces. The British team wore custom made British shirts, tailored especially for the event. The Scots and Welsh players feigned disgust at having to wear Englands famous Three Lions but once over this shock, they soon focused on a match that had to be won. The British team was made up of play-ers with a wide range of ages and abilities, but all wanted to have a fun day out and of

course, all wanted to win. Unfortunately, I think we underestimated how organized the Brazilian team would be. It turned out that most of their team had played for a Sunday league in Orlando so were more accus-tomed to playing together than our thrown together team, but with a typical stiff upper lip, we took to the field undaunted.

The game started with end to end action, however it was not long before the Brazilian team opened the scoring and con-tinued to do so with ease and more than a little skill. With the large British team mak-ing regular substitutions from the bench

Page 13: The Florida Standard

SpORT

(four to five players at a time) it did mean everyone saw a good amount of action on the field and all the players got to show their respective skills. Admittedly, some had slightly more energy resources than others, but as a family fun day, everyone got a turn. Half time was enjoyed in true British style with orange slices and refreshments served, as well as an encouraging team talk. We knew then that we had to take it slightly more seriously and tactical changes were put in place, reshaping the team based on the players preferred positions. The second half was more positive than the first and

when Britains first goal went in, you would have thought the team had just scored an extra time winner in the World Cup final. As the game continued, both teams and their fans comically jeered the opposition, however it was all taken in the manner it was meant and the referee had very little to do except cash his check after the game.

The game was finally won by the Brazilians. After the match photographs were taken and the trophy presented, the British players congratulated the Brazilian team on their well deserved win. Brazil retains the trophy until next years rematch.

I am expecting the ‘friendly’ billing to be removed from the posters next year though, as I suspect the British team will be bringing in more experienced players with months of trials and practices. Next year we will be better organized and Brazil should prepare themselves because Britain will be looking to lift that trophy.

With the heat being what it was, refreshments were essential and more then enough were kindly provided by the spon-sors. I would like to thank XXX XXX XXX & XXX for sponsoring this event and very much look forward to the next.

The Delicious Side of Disney Dining

and we’ll start with the best…As a tourist des-tination, Orlando does have it’s fair share of great

A 13-year recipient of the prestigious AAA Five Diamond award, Victoria & Albert’s is more of an event than merely just ‘dinner’.Being so highly rated does, however, come with a hefty price tag and Vic-toria & Albert’s wouldn’t necessarily be your average date night destina-tion. Jiko – The Cooking Place, at Disney’s Animal Kingdom Lodge, fuses traditional African, Indian and Mediter-ranean cuisine and would fall in the same price range as most non Disney quality restaurants in Orlando.Diners sit surrounded by the colors of an African sunset with twin wood-burning ovens roaring in the stunning open showcase kitchen while they enjoy such dishes as Grilled Wild Boar Tenderloin and Maize-crusted Lake Victoria Perch. For dessert, The Chocolate and Tea Safari (Vanilla Rooibos-Tanzanian Chocolate Cake, Free Form “Kit Kat”, and Green Tea Ice Cream) is my personal idea of heaven! In a smaller bowl put the salad cream and tomato ketchup and mix together. Add a squeeze of lemon juice the Worcestershire sauce and pepper and sauce to taste. If it tastes a little sharp add a little more salad cream or mayonnaise, and leave to rest for 10 minutes.

On a large serving plate put the finely sliced lettuce in the centre, tak-ing it about an inch from the edge.
