MAYOR’S MESSAGE I am delighted to welcome Peter Slattery as the incoming Mayor for The Flinders Ranges Council. Peter has made a significant contribution as a Councillor over the past five years and I wish him success for the future. At the close of nominations on 21 September, The Flinders Ranges Council received the same number of nominations as vacancies, therefore the election is uncontested and all candidates who nominated were declared elected. I offer my congratulations to our new Councillors Ken Anderson, Jannene Cannard and Bronwyn Filsell and our returning Members Ronald (Mopsy) Daniel, Gary Lucas, John Shute, Garry Thompson and Katie Walsh. On behalf of Council and the community I thank and acknowledge the service of Modris Ozlins and Wayne Schuttloffel. The new Council takes effect on Friday 12 November 2010 when I will officially step down as Mayor and Peter Slattery will assume the Mayoral position. The new Hawker Swimming Pool will be completed in time for the 2010/11 season and I invite you to the official opening by Rowan Ramsey MP on Friday 5 November at 6pm. Max McHugh MAYOR NEWS LETTER 1 Seventh Street, Quorn www.frc.sa.gov.au Phone: 8648 6031 Fax: 8648 6001 email: [email protected]OCTOBER 2010 “NEW RESIDENTS PACK” FOR HAWKER AND QUORN AVAILABLE FROM THE COUNCIL OFFICE The Flinders Ranges Council CHANGES WASTE DEPOT OPERATIONS January 2011 is likely to see important changes to the way Council currently operates the Hawker and Quorn Waste Depots. In line with Environment Protection Authority requirements, Council will convert the Quorn Waste Depot to a Waste Transfer Station. The Hawker Depot will remain as a landfill site at this stage, but will be subject to much stricter controls. The two bin system currently utilised by town residents will continue and all Council district residents will be able to access the Hawker Waste Depot and the Quorn Transfer Station as a user pays system at an equivalent fee structure for domestic waste and recycling. For efficiency, Council will have one employee operate both the Quorn Waste Transfer Station and the Hawker Landfill. All residents wishing to dispose of waste at the Depots will be required to: sort their waste prior to arrival at the Depots; place waste in bins as directed by attendant; and pay appropriate charges for disposal of waste. Council will continue to accept sorted domestic, hard and green wastes. Non friable asbestos will still be accepted at the Quorn Waste Depot under current arrangements, but restricted to Council district residents only. Council will no longer accept unsorted waste, any type of vehicle tyre, or any waste on a truck over 20 tonne capacity. Further information will be available in the November 2010 Newsletter. Remember, the current Hawker and Quorn Waste Depot arrangements will continue to operate until at least January 2011. The scheduled change to dump operations is subject to EPA approval, which is still pending. Therefore the anticipated changes to waste depot operations maybe postponed if approvals are not received shortly. Proposed hours of operation for the Waste Depots (from mid January 2011): Hawker Quorn Wednesday .... 8.30am—11.30am Tuesday ........ 12.30pm—4.30pm Saturday ......... 9.00am—1.00pm Thursday ........ 12.30pm—4.30pm Sunday .......... 9.00am—1.00pm CFS Bushfire Information Hotline 1300 362 361
