Volume 9, Issue 1 January 2019 Experiences from the Winter Youth Rally in Atlanta by Father George Wilson Each year during the final week of December, the Metropolis of Atlanta hosts the Winter Youth Rally (WYR) near the Metropolis Center and the Annunciation Cathedral in Atlanta. The entire Marriott Century Center hotel is utilized to house this wonderful Metropolis youth program. This year I had the opportunity to accompany our GOYA members and their advisors on the bus to Atlanta. The eight hour bus ride provided some quality time to review study materials that were chosen by the Metropolis Youth Office in preparation for the Bible Bowl competition. The program began with an Aghiasmos Service at the Annunciation Cathedral officiated by His Eminence Metropolitan Alexios and the ten clergymen who were present. The Cathedral was filled to capacity with the youth and advisors participating in the WYR. After the service we were treated to a delightful meal, and then GOYAns participated in a preliminary round of the Bible Bowl. Each church team of GOYAns collectively answered twenty questions. The teams that answered the most questions correctly moved on to the next round. I am pleased to share that our team advanced to the next bracket round of sixteen teams. The volleyball competition began the following day. Our team played at the nearby Boys & Girls Club gymnasium. Although New Orleans was well-coached, the team did not get beyond the first round of competition but showed spirited teamwork and appeared to have a lot of fun. Each Church was asked to create a banner, which hung off the balconies in the hotel. The New Orleans crew offered perhaps the most creative and colorful banner that was uniquely New Orleans. The WYR is a marvelous program for the young people to meet and interact socially with peers from other churches in the Metropolis. It combines opportunities for spiritual and physical exercise and is a chance to make new friends and spend time with old acquaintances while encouraging them to grow in their faith while having fun. As their Priest I am especially proud of our GOYAns and their advisors and highly encourage all of our families to consider participating in this incredibly valuable youth program in future years.
The Winter Youth Rally is a huge undertaking, which depends on countless volunteers from the Metropolis and the parishioners of the Annunciation Cathedral. We were very blessed to have been hosted by such a caring and loving group of people, and I know that I speak for our GOYAns and their advisors by sharing my appreciation to the Parish Council of our Cathedral though the Education, Culture, and Youth Ministries Committee for providing this exceptional opportunity.

The Stewardship Committee is launching the 2019 Stewardship Campaign and deems it important to reiterate the message published in the December issue of The Flame that you please consider increasing your pledge by at least 10%. Many people are still paying what they paid thirty years ago! The Church’s bills have increased greatly in this time period. Also, parishioners must realize that the community cannot continue to rely on the annual Greek Festival to plug all the gaps. The most dedicated workers are getting older, and the profit margins are starting to shrink. The community has to prepare for the day when most of the budget can be covered by stewardship. Although the new packets have not been mailed yet, some parishioners already made their 2019 pledges. The Committee thanks them and asks that the remaining congregants prayerfully consider increasing their pledge this year.
The Cathedral office received 15 commitments totaling $6,570.00. Of this $6,570.00 was paid with an average pledge of $438.00. Thank you for your generous support of the 2019 Stewardship Ministry.

PHILOPTOCHOS ANGEL TREE CHRISTMAS PROJECT The Angel Tree project was again a huge success this year! Philoptochos was able to distribute gifts to eight families because of the overwhelming generosity of the entire community. Special appreciation is extended to all community members and organizations that participated. Thank you is also extended to Nicole, Mary, and Johnny Peterson, who creatively decorated the gift bags. The families were truly thankful for the gift certificates that they received. This was a beautiful community effort. Thanks also to Viki Moustoukas, Elaine Nugent, and Diana Peterson for coordinating this project.
HOTEL HOPE MINISTRY Hotel Hope is a nonprofit, interfaith organization providing emergency housing to women with children in a safe and loving atmosphere and providing related supportive services until the family becomes self-sufficient. Philoptochos members visited Hotel Hope and provided a meal for all individuals housed in the facility. Chairperson Debbie Funti organized this ministry and accompanied members who cooked, served, and participated in this new outreach. Members who joined her that evening were Dawn Harvey, Faith Kyame, Carol Venturatos, and Presvytera Harriet Wilson. Maria Vennis joined the ladies and brought articles for the ladies and their children. It was a very gratifying experience for all!

Gregory is a trusted friend and excellent researcher. If you wish to know more about this effort and want to make a donation, his website is as follows:

Archives Committee Chairperson Maggie Maag reports that this first endeavor is focused on Sparta and Tripolis and that Gregory is perfect to direct it as he provided the documentation for the PBS genealogy show last year.
