Parish News
Dear parishioners, A few weeks ago, I mentioned that I intended to have my friend with the Ph. D. in theology come and provide adult faith formation for us during our soup suppers. The only thing left to do was inform him of this. Well, I did and he will. On Friday, February 22, March 8 and March 22, Dr. Daniel Lattier will be with us during our soup suppers and help us explore our faith. The trendy thing to do would be to talk about the latest and greatest in our understanding of the faith, something like, “How Modern Psychology Confirms the Good of Confession” or “How Neuroscience Indicates We Are Built to Love Others.” These would be fine topics and it is important that we continue to apply the latest in scientific research to issues of faith so that we can gain greater understanding. But it is perhaps even more important that we delve into the wisdom of our rich tradition, lest we lose what we have gained. That is one thing I appreciate about Rediscover Catholicism – it is not about something new; it is about something that has been forgotten and needs to be rediscovered: the truth and the beauty of our faith. On those three Fridays, Dr. Lattier will speak to us about Prayer, Fasting and Almsgiving. These three spiritual works are recommended to us by our Lord Jesus Christ, so any thoughts of, “I don’t need to hear about these” should be quickly disregarded. I can guarantee that there is no saint who did not practice all three of these works during his/her life, so if our goal is heaven, then these must be a part of our life. Please join us at 5:30pm in the Community Room on St. John’s Campus on those Fridays, share in the meal with your fellow parishioners and be open to learning how we can better incorporate these spiritual works into our lives. The evening will conclude with Stations of the Cross at 7:00pm in the church. I hope to see you there.
—Fr. Liekhus

Want to Try Your Hand at Calligraphy?
We're forming an informal craft group of interested folks who want to learn a bit about the making
of the St. John's Bible and its illumination, who want to try their hand at practicing their own calligraphy, and who simply seek some midwinter inspiration. This is not a formal class but more of a fun gathering for a few weeks to help inspire our reading of the Word. We meet three Tuesday nights at St. Joseph’s Campus Auxiliary Room (just off the Social Hall kitchen) from 7:00 to 8:30pm on February 26, March 5
and 12. [Basic calligraphy pens & paper will be available for those who are new to this art.]
