For everything there is a season, and a time for every matter under heaven:

a time to be born, and a time to die;

a time to plant, and a time to pluck up what is planted;

a time to kill, and a time to heal;

a time to break down, and a time to build up;

a time to weep, and a time to laugh

a time to mourn, and a time to dance;…

a time to love, and a time to hate;

a time for war, and a time for peace. ~ Ecclesiastes 3:1-4, 8

Dear St John’s and First Lutheran,

Each year in August I start feeling excited. The Fall season is coming; the time of the beginning of a new school year. – Yes, I was “one of those kids” who always looked forward to school. — Even as a pastor, I have continued to experience those feelings each September with the start-up of the new church program year.

As I approach this September, though, I’m feeling some sadness. I’m mourning the end of a great working

relationship with a wonderful colleague. Of course, we expect Pastor Paul’s retirement to be life-giving for him, but I know that like me, people at First Lutheran and especially the family of St. John’s are experiencing the grief that comes with that change and loss of relationship. There is the loss of that longtime relationship with your faith-filled pastor who walked with you, comforted you, challenged you, laughed and cried with you for over 15 years. This change will surface some grief: sadness, feeling lost or alone, even anger. The congregation will experience a variety of feelings, possibly even joy. Please recognize that not everyone relates to a pastor in the same way.

It is important to be aware of this for both the people of St John’s and for those from First Lutheran. We

continue to walk together with some joint activities – joint worship, bible study together, shared mission efforts, our Future Together Team. Now we are also blessed to begin a year of sharing our intern, Vicar Blatt! As we engage in these ministries together, we need to be aware of and caring for each other’s feelings in this time of transition.

St John’s will continue to have oversight by a pastor designated by the bishop’s office. Assistant to the Bishop,

Pastor Greg Tennermann will be working with St John’s to assure that pastoral oversight. St John’s Church Council has the job of keeping the congregation up to date as things progress in this regard. As well, St John’s has contracted with Pastor Bill Hempel through the rest of this calendar year, and Vicar Blatt, with my supervision, will be an integral part of the pastoral ministry team in both congregations. We have already worked out most of the preaching and pastoral leadership for worship for the Fall!

There’s change and there’s newness. To everything there is a season. But it is always the season of our God

with us in Jesus Christ! God’s love and mercy never change, never fail. And God’s call to us to engage in ministry and mission continues on! I invite you to use this season as a time for renewed prayer: that St John’s Lutheran and First Lutheran, individually and together are able to discern God’s call into the Future! Peace & Joy!

God doesn’t break God’s promises! Bible Study, Fall 2014, “The Promised Land”

We will delve into Ray Vander Laan’s on-site Bible study in the Holy Land. This Bible study consists of 5 faith lessons that look at the Hebrew people’s journey out of oppression to the land God promised. The lessons are as follows:

1) Standing at the Crossroads –Tel Gezer St. John’s Chapel [Monday Sept. 29 and Wednesday Oct. 1]

2) Wet Feet – Jordan River St John’s Chapel [Monday Oct. 6 and Wednesday Oct. 8]

3) First Fruits – Tel Jericho FLC Library [Monday Oct. 20 and Wednesday Oct. 22]

[Week Off Monday Oct 13 and Wednesday Oct 15]

4) Confronting Evil – Tel Beth Shemesh FLC Library [Monday Oct. 27 and Wednesday Oct. 29]

5) Iron of Culture – Tel Azekah FLC Library [Monday Nov. 3 and Wednesday Nov. 5]

The Monday class will meet from 10:30am to 11:30am and the Wednesday class will meet from 6:30pm to 8:00pm.

Sessions 1 & 2 will be held at the St. John’s chapel Sessions 3, 4 & 5 will be held in the First Lutheran Church Library.

“God’s Work Our Hands” has been the ELCA’s mantra for the past several years. September 7th 2014 will be a day of service in which ELCA members across the country participate in various service projects. We will be participating with the Albany Lutheran Cluster in a packing of

20,000 macaroni and cheese meals. These meals will then be given out throughout our cluster to individuals and families in need.

20,000 individual macaroni and cheese packets will be

produced in two hours time! That seems unbelievable, but it isn’t! We need volunteers (120 between the 5-cluster churches) to do each of 12 jobs around 10 table stations. There is a job for anyone! If you can’t stand for two hours, that’s okay—there’s a job for you! If you’re in a wheelchair, that’s not a problem—there’s a job for you! If you feel like you are uncoordinated, don’t fret—there’s a job for you!

In addition to volunteers we also need contributions

to offset the cost of 20,000 meals. Our congregation’s goal is to raise $1,000! The checks can be made payable to First Lutheran Church. There are tons of ways for you to get involved in this project. God’s Work Our Hands is a great way to show the world that Christ freed you to love and serve your neighbor!

We hope to see you on September 7, 2014! We will gather in Wittenberg Hall at 12:30 pm, which directly follows our pizza lunch after Sunday morning worship.

We Still Need Flip Flops

It’s time to head to your favorite dollar store and pick up some flip flops (men’s sizes

Large & X-Large) for the shelter!! As we have done in the past, we will continue to collect them during September when they are most likely to be on sale. Color and style do not matter because these flip-flops are used by the homeless guests in the shower on a daily basis and then they are disinfected in bleach, so generally they do not last too long. Therefore, we need to make sure the supply is plentiful during the months of November to April when the shelter is in full swing. During September and October, the five Cluster Churches will be collecting the following items most needed to start the season in November…

Liquid Laundry Soap Mr. Clean 409 + bleach Ajax Pine Sol (or any brand) floor cleaner Tilex (or any brand) bathroom cleaner Fabric Softener sheets Stick-Up Deodorizers (NOT spray or plug ins) Hand Sanitizer Coffee and Powdered Creamer Hot/Cold Paper Cups Sturdy Paper Plates and Bowls Plastic eating utensils

Also, men’s T-shirts (M, XL, 2X); boxer shorts (38-40); white tube socks (9-11); travel-size soaps and deodorants.

Please place your donations in the gray bin marked “Shelter”

Many thanks!!

FLC Community Dinners The September Community Dinner will be held on Monday, September 29th, at 6:00 in Wittenberg Hall. After a successful summer of picnics (sometimes outdoors, other times indoors due to weather), it is time to move indoors. We have averaged 84 people in the summer and 63 for the entire year. A few people from the dinners have even attended church in the recent past. The Damien Center staff members have assisted us with many of these dinners and some of their clients have become regular attendees. At the end of each dinner, neighbors and members are invited to take free food home that we have purchased or received from the Regional Food Bank. We would like to have more FLC members involved with distributing flyers to our neighbors, set-up, serving and clean-up, as well as visiting with our neighbors during the dinners. YOU ARE ALL INVITED TO ATTEND THIS FREE EVENT. It takes many people to make dinners like this a success, and they all deserve our thanks. Liz Peters is a fantastic food purchaser. She has made

countless trips to the Regional Food Bank, supplemented by shopping at several of our local supermarkets.

Pastor Allie leads us in prayer and welcomes all of our neighbors.

Alex Nagy is available for each dinner, helping us at every turn with all of the practical aspects of running a dinner.

The Albany Police Department has partnered with us in the summer to provide enriching experiences – Safe Child ID program, bike rodeo and back to school supplies.

Lisa Rittberger, Colin McKnight, Carol and Ed Engelhardt, Janice Logan and Liz Peters organized and prepared the summer dinners.

Richard McElreath, Paul Hyde, Peter Robbins, Rich Klaus, Harold Hazzard, Anne Erling with daughters Amelia and Ingrid, Christina Luke, Michael Kenyon and Veena Parangi have all assisted with various aspects of making the dinners enjoyable for everyone. (If I missed anyone’s name, please let me know.)

Some of these people automatically volunteered when they saw an immediate need, without being asked or expecting recognition. We thank you, one and all!

Sisters and Brothers in our Lord, As I begin work at St. John’s and First Lutheran Churches, I am compelled to reflect on the roads that led me to this place. I spent the last 7 years of my life in post-high school education, so I would be prepared to embark on this adventure. It seems to me that regardless, one can never be fully prepared for the task of Pastor and certainly not Vicar. It comes suddenly—one day I was sitting in a seminary classroom and the next I was on my new doorstep in Albany. What a ride! I thank God for the continued guidance and the Holy Sprit’s occasional pushing and pulling me back to the path. On my first Sunday, within seconds, and even before that I was no longer Lauren—I became Vicar. In the Bible, many individuals have their names changed when something important is going to happen or when God sends them out on a journey. The Prophet Isaiah writes, “Now, this is what the LORD says, the one who created you, O Jacob, and formed you, O Israel: "Don't be afraid, for I will protect you. I call you by name, you are mine.” God comes down to us, God gets on our level, and God says, “You are MINE”. We belong to God. We were formed in God’s image and God calls each and every one of us to a unique vocation. I was transformed by the trust of the Church and further by these two communities of faith even though I haven’t yet done anything to earn that trust—Vicar. In the waters of baptism God says yes to each of us before we could ever say yes to God. Your faith in God, your faith in me, your guidance, and the adventure in your eyes will bring us through this year with love and lots of grace. I could not be more excited to serve our merciful savior with you and to do ministry in the name of the one who keeps coming down to us, Jesus the Christ. I know you’ve seen my list of suggested items. I am picky about the things I eat at home because I am mindful of the global food crisis, but I do eat at restaurants. That being said—don’t be afraid to invite me to your home for dinner or to a restaurant for a meal. I don’t bite and I do eat at these places! I pray that I will get to know each of you individually over this upcoming year and that our ministry would be blessed by God’s endlessly loving hands. God’s Peace Vicar Blatt

September 19th will mark the 60th anniversary of

First Lutheran’s sanctuary. We are planning to celebrate this occasion on Sunday, September 21st with a lasagna dinner after church service. We will be looking for people to make lasagna, salads, and deserts. I will be putting up a sign-up sheet on the bulletin board across from Pastor’s office.

With such a special occasion I am hoping we can

reach out to people who have been part of the congregation over the years and invite them to join us for worship and our lasagna dinner. I am asking for help looking for people to invite. These can be people who are local maybe we can bring them back to the fold or people who live out of the area and might come back to visit that day.

Another project we are hoping to do is put together

a DVD for the occasion of memories over the years. We are planning on going into the archives and looking for pictures, we are reaching out to any of you for any pictures or stories you have that we can include.

Please contact me as soon as possible also looking

for any help with this event. Feel free to call me 370-0159 or email at: [email protected]

HOMELESS ACTION CENTER SANDWICHES

Throughout the year, twice a month, we have been providing the Homeless Action Center (HAC) with 50 sandwiches, which are distributed to homeless people throughout the city by the HAC van. The staff and clients of HAC are very grateful for the sandwiches that our church provides.

Over the summer, individuals

signed up to make these sandwiches. Thank you for your participation in this important outreach program: Cindy Reynders, Sandy O’Connor, Betsey Franz, Lisa Rittberger, JoAnne Evans, Erin Cade, Carol Engelhardt, Laurel Catellier, the Brousseau family, and the Erling-Colafati family. Many thanks also to Liz Peters for purchasing some of the supplies.

Beginning in October, our First Friends will once

again take over making sandwiches. Clara DeMarco, Eve Norton, Doris Marsh, Marcella Olsen and Kim Paonessa have performed this ministry for several years, and we are thankful for your dedication to feeding the homeless on the street.

About our Special Guest… For over 20 years, Kent Busman has been telling stories to people of all ages. While working in Alaska, he learned his first tale, "The Cremation of Sam Magee," and practiced telling it as he hitchhiked from Anchorage back to Michigan. Since then, Busman has been able to integrate stories into his vocation. As Director of Camp Fowler and Conference Center, a youth camp in Speculator, NY, he has used stories in the entire camp experience. "Telling stories of caring for the world, stories of wonder and joy, and stories of faith and hope, help to remind the listeners of not only how special the world is, but how special they are, too."
