• Area where New York is located nowadays was found in 1524 by Giovanni Verrezano. Dutchmen set up here a colony, where they were selling furs. Then they built here a colony and called it new Amsterdam (the whole state- New niderlands). At this time mainly Indians (algonkinowie) lived here. The first townsfolk arrived here from Asia, through the Bering Sea Thousand year before, next they spread along East seashore of America.

• Indians got beads and trumperies because they let Dutchmen to occupy. In 1626 Peter Minuit bought “Manahatta” island (today it`s Manhattan). While colonists and dark- skinned slaves arrived to the colony. Breede Wegh (Broadway) rose at Indian way called Weekquasgeek. In the colony there was a mess and confusion. In 1647 peter Stuyvesant arrived. In 1664 without fight, England got New Amsterdam. English people changed the name for “new York”. The town transformed, grew up the number of inhabitants. New York became (if it comes to size) the second colony in thirteen states. In 1683 New York got Municipal Laws. English government imposed high taxes on colonies. England looked after more about its own businesses than about colonies` success. In 1702 Lord Cornbury remained a governor. (He was wearing women clothes).

In 1770 colonists threw load tea into the sea. In 1776 independence war started and after seven years English people signed peace and left the city. American Museum of Natural History

An American Museum of Natural History is not merely a storehouse of scientific speciments, it`s a showplace of dynamic displays and high-tech interactive features. There is a lot of old stuff, but it`s far dull. The museum has the largest collection of dinosaur fossils in the world. The Halls of Gems andlive Manerals hold the Star of India the largest star sapphire and one of the most famous gems in the world. It was mined about 300 years efore that.Even olderst is the Cape York Meteorite in the Hall of Meteorite, in the Hall of Meteorites. It`s 4,5 billion years old and weighs 34 tons. A cavalcade of giant African elephants leads the displays in the mammal halls, where dioramas re-create habitats .In the Hall of Ocean Life, you felll as it you`re underwater, and also underwhale-that is under the model of a blue whale, he largest animal ever to live on earth.

Brooklyn Bridge & Brooklyn• In 1884,P.T.Barnum paraded 21 elephants across the year-old

Brooklyn Bridge. At last, the public believed it would not fall down. Fifteen years earlier, it had seemed an impossible task to build a bridge over the East River, linking Brooklyn and Manhattan: It hadto be long enough to span nearly 1,600 feet, tall enough that ships could pass under it, and strong enough to support streetcars. Today the promenade along the riverfront is one of the city`s most pleasant places to walk. Father inland is Prospect Park, designed by Calvert Vaux and Frederick Law Olmsted, who also designed Central park. They liked Prospect better:For one thing, it has the Long Meadow, a stretch of green lawn nearly a mile long, the greatest expanse uninterrupted by buildings in the city.

CENTRAL PARK

• Visitors often wonder how New Yorkers cope with living in a city that has more concrete than grass and more traffic lights than trees. In fact, the city has some 1,700parks. Central Park, in particular, is like a big backyard for the city`s residents and they don`t even have to mow the grass. Among the park`s guests are 275 of North America`s 800 species of birds; other nonnatives, such as penguins ,inhabit the charming Central Park zoo.

CHINATOWN

• Just by walking through Chinatown`s narrow, bustling streets, you`ll get a sense of how exotic the neighborhood is. Banks and office buildings look like pagodas, people around you are speking various Asian languages, and the sings, and even the prompts on automatic teller machines, are in Chinese. It`s a city within a city, a country within a city: New York`s Chinatown is home to the larges concentration of Chinese people in North America. All kinds of Chines products can be found here, from embroidered slippers and mah-jongg sets to herbal medicines and authentic ingredients of Chinese cooking. The neighborhood becomes especially boisterous duringthe Chines new Year Festival, when elaborate papier-mache and cloth dragons parade through the decorated streets. For a quiet moment, step into the Eastern States Buddha Temple on Mott Street, where a hundred golden Buddha figures are gleaming in candlelight

WORLD TRADE CENTER SITE

• On September 11,2001 terrorists hijacked four commercial airliners and crashed two of them into the twin towers of the World trade Center. The towers fell, and several nearby buildings were also destroyed. Nearly 3,000 people were killed. The World Trade Center was a complex of seven buildings, the most famous being the two 110-story towers

FIFTH AVENUE&FASHION

• An 1829 tourist guide proclaimed that “all American goes to new York for its shopping” more than a century later, New York is still a shopper`s Shangri-La, and the high street if high fashion is Fifth Avenue. Window- shopping is a popular pastime, and some stores have such exquisite displays you could mistake them for museums .In Grand Army Plaza at Fifth Avenue and 59th Streets, a large fountain is tooped with a statue of the goddess of abundance-a fitting deit to preside over a stretch of exclusive, expensive stores. One of the most successful department stores, R.H. Macys and Co., moved instead to Herald square, Broadway and 34th Streets, where it became, and remains, the world`s larges department store, with 2.2 million square feet of selling space.

CHRYSLER BUILDING

• It`s hard not to fall in love with the Chrysler Building, the crowing glory of new York`s skyline. The gorgeous, gleaming building was constructed by Walter P. Chrysler of the automobile company, and it`s an homage to the car. The spire was inspired by radiator grill; the 30th floor aports a frieze of wheels, complete with fenders and hubcaps, and its corners are decorated with huge stainless steel radiator caps. It`s definitely a luxury model: Stainless steel, which was exorbitantly expensive in the 1920s, was used with abandon, calling to mind the chrome trim on cars. Nor was any expense spared in the lobby- which was used as an automobile showroom-with its elegant marble walls, inlaid wood elevator doors, and murals representing transportation, progress and the skyscraper itself Sleek, shining, and streamlined the Chrysler Building is the essence of Art Deco style, which was inspired by speed and modernity, and is characterized by bold, geometric shapes and the use of new, machine-age materials.

STATUE OF LIBERTY & ELLIS ISLAND

• No matter how familiar you are with the image of the Statue of Liberty, you can`t help feeling wonderstruck when you see her in person. For one thing, there`s the size. Her nose is as big as a 9-year-old kind. Her index finger alone is 8 feet long 40 or 50 times the size of yours. She stands 305 feet tall above New York Bay. Liberty`s gilded torch represents freedom. The copper sheeting that covers the statue in hammered to a mere 3\32 inch thick. To support it, there`s an iron framework on the inside, designed by Alexandre-Gustave Eiffel, who became famous for another iconic monument a few years later.
