Special issue

The FIM has great pleasure in bringing you this special issue magazine that celebrates all the 2011 FIM World Champions and showcases some of the outstanding achievements – and the amazing machines - that earned them their titles in all the disciplines that make up our sport. Not just Road Racing but Motocross, Trial, Enduro and Track Racing are now hugely popular in many countries and our Champions are truly international stars.

These superbly talented men and women who have reached the pinnacle of their disciplines deserve our heartfelt thanks and our respect. They are the true protagonists of our sport and should be rewarded for their breathtaking and courageous performances. No world title is easy to conquer, not even for athletes who dominate their disciplines as some riders have done in recent seasons. Every season brings new challenges, and no title can ever be taken for granted.

Many still see motorcycling as a predominantly male bastion, but we are now devoting significant resources to supporting women in motorcycle sport. They are increasingly making their presence felt, especially in off-road disciplines (Motocross, Trial, Enduro and Rallies), and their performances are attracting new fans to the sport.

The vast majority of our 2011 FIM World Champions joined us towards the end of the year for the second FIM Gala Award Ceremony in the Casino in Estoril (Portugal), where I had the honour of greeting them in person. The live TV coverage given to the Ceremony around the globe will undoubtedly further enhance the huge popularity enjoyed by these heroes – and heroines - and our sport as a whole, with its millions of fans of both genders and all ages.

RICHARD ASSENFIM OvERALL LANDSPEED WORld RECORd hOldERBorn on 18 May 1965 in Tauranga, New Zealand2006: As a passionate motorcycle rider, Richard Assen got addicted to landspeed record attempts when he saw some riders running flat out on the salt bed of Lake Gairdner, Australia. The Burt Munro movie confirmed Richards’ addiction and with his mate, Jason Swan, the two Kiwi’s y started a 5 year project. Naturally, a visit to Bonneville, the holy ground for land speed records, was required. 2011: Richard is now the fastest man, riding a conventional motorcycle at just over 420.663 km/h!

WHAT WAS THE BEST MOMENT OF YOUR SEASON / CAREER?

Carlos Checa: To be honest, the whole season has been great for me and it has been full of good moments, since we started winning. There have been tougher moments but they were also good for me. The best moment of my career would also be this season, because I was able to close a circle in terms of the experience, the learning process. It is also the moment that enabled me to have a team and a bike that have allowed me to achieve this Title. It is my first World Title, so it is an easy question for me to answer (laughs).

Richard Assen: It was this year in September, when we were trying for the Landspeed record again. I believe it was on day three. We managed to go really fast on the down-run, well over the World record, and on the return-run we beat it again by 8mph. We had been waiting for some time for the wind to be right, so five years of trying came down to one single moment in time. It was a dream come true.

WHAT WAS THE WORST MOMENT OF YOUR SEASON / CAREER?

Carlos Checa: The worst moment of the season would be the one in Aragon, where I suffered the only crash of the season, but I would not describe it as a really bad moment for me. It was just not a really good race. It was just a race with a crash, which is never good. But in a way, it helped us to plan the following races, so it was also a positive thing for my learning process. It was not good for the points standings, but it was really irrelevant in the end.

I always try to get something positive out of all the negative moments I have, so for me they are all part of my learning process. But maybe the accident I had in England in 1998 was the toughest moment, as I was seriously injured.

Richard Assen: Probably last year when our sponsor ran out of money and my buddies and I had to fund it ourselves. Taking the bike from Australia to the US every year is expensive. And especially last year, when we knew we had the speed but a lot of things went wrong and we had to go back home. That was a big down moment for us.

WHO WAS YOUR TOUGHEST RIVAL AND WHY?

Carlos Checa: Melandri was second in the Championship, but the toughest rider for me was Biaggi, because he was the former World Champion. He is a very consistent rider and very difficult to beat, and we had a very intense fight during most of the season, but then he suffered an injury in Germany which made him miss two races. But if it had not been for that injury, we would have been fighting for the World Title until the very end.

Richard Assen: I think that our toughest rival would be John Noonan, the American rider, who had been holding on to the record since 2005. He is very competitive, but we managed to put a 9mph margin over his speed to come home victorious.

WHICH RIDER IN ANOTHER DISCIPLINE DO YOU FOLLOW / RESPECT THE MOST?

Carlos Checa: Apart from road racing, I  like Trial. I  have a very good relationship with Toni Bou and Adam Raga. And rallies. We are very good friends with Marc Coma. I  follow all the motorcycling disciplines. I am an enthusiast about the sport and bikes in general.

I  have had a personal and professional relationship with Wayne Rainey, and he is one of the riders I  respect the most, but my benchmark has always been the greatest riders in the motorcycle history. I always try focus on those riders and see what they do to win, and then you try to identify those things that you don’t do in order to improve your performance.

Richard Assen: I was always a big fan of Carl Fogarty as I spent a lot of time living in the UK and it was great to watch him racing live. He was a very committed rider who wouldn’t take any prisoners! His riding style was legendary so I consider him an inspiration.

IS THERE ANOTHER TYPE OF MOTORCYCLE SPORT YOU WOULD LIKE TO TRY?

Carlos Checa: I like Trial a lot and I practise it in winter time, and also rallies. Last year I went into the desert with Marc Coma and he let me try his bike. It was a beautiful experience, but I don’t know if I could ever take part in a rally.

Richard Assen: No, because I haven’t finished with this one yet! We can still go on to reach the 500km/h mark...

WHAT WAS THE BEST MOMENT OF YOUR SEASON / CAREER?

Stefan Bradl: The whole season was unbelievable. I wasn’t expecting to win it at the beginning but I think that winning in Silverstone in the wet with a big lead was the best moment of the season. Winning the title is obviously the best moment in my career.

Päivärinta: I  had many happy moments but I  think winning the FIM Sidecar World Championship for two years in a row now and winning the title for the first time in 2008 were the best so far.

Hänni: The best moment of this season was winning the World Championship of course, and the best of my career has to be the first time I won the title.

WHAT WAS THE WORST MOMENT OF YOUR SEASON / CAREER?

Stefan Bradl: In Assen the conditions were very bad and I crashed owing to a stupid mistake when I was in fifth or sixth place. That was the worst moment this year.

Päivärinta: Not winning the Championship in 2009. We had a bad time that year...

Hänni: The worst moment of my career was a severe race crash I had in Brno, in 1983.

WHO WAS YOUR TOUGHEST RIVAL AND WHY?

Stefan Bradl: Marco Marquez. At the beginning he made some mistakes but when he found his ideal set-up and rhythm after four or five races, he got very fast on the bike and also in his thinking. We had some good fights.

Päivärinta: Most of the English riders… they’re hard to beat! They’re always out there fighting for the title.

Hänni: The Brits! Only after we beat them do we know we have a chance to win...

WHICH RIDER IN ANOTHER DISCIPLINE DO YOU FOLLOW / RESPECT THE MOST?

Stefan Bradl: I tried to follow other disciplines but I didn’t have much time during the season to focus on one specific rider. Maybe Marco Melandri on the Superbikes. I kept an eye on his results this year.

Hänni: The Brits! Only after we beat them do we know we have a chance to win...

IS THERE ANOTHER TYPE OF MOTORCYCLE SPORT YOU WOULD LIKE TO TRY?

Stefan Bradl: I’m riding a little bit of Motocross and I would like to do a full MX1 or MX2 race, but only after I finish my career…

Päivärinta: I  don’t know… I  already tried Motocross, Speedway, Ice Racing, both solo and sidecar. I don’t know what to try now…

Hänni: Nothing on two wheels, that’s for sure! I  would like to have a go at the cars now, anything with four wheels!

WHAT WAS THE BEST MOMENT OF YOUR SEASON / CAREER?

Stephanie Laier: The best moment was actually the first, one and only race with the MX1 guys because the racing was awesome. I got a good race, I felt really strong and the track was awesome, like with every MX1 race. There I  really showed what I was able to do and I  really rode well. The rest of the of the season was a little bit up and down, because I had to fight not only for the Title, but also with my physical health, and that was really difficult.

2010 was the best moment of my career and also the worst of my career. It was in Fermo, Italy, during the last race of the season, I crashed during the practice session. Actually it was not my fault, I went to the hospital and I was back for the qualifying practice and for the race, and I finally won that race and the World Title. So that moment was very emotional and very hard for me too.

Ken Roczen: The best moment of the season was when I  took the World Title in my home country, in Gaildorf. It was a very emotional experience competing there, and I won the Title, so it was something big.

There are a couple of moments I would pick out as the best of my career. When I won my first GP in Teutschenthal at 15 and a half years old, when I won the main event of the Supercross in Las Vegas, and of course the win in Gaildorf. Those are the best moments of my career.

WHAT WAS THE WORST MOMENT OF YOUR SEASON / CAREER?

Stephanie Laier: The worst moment of the season was in Finland, because I  was feeling in really bad shape. I  threw up just some minutes before the race, so it was a just matter of surviving that race.

Ken Roczen: The worst moments were actually three races in Brazil, Portugal and France where we had big crashes. We did not really know what it was, but I think these were the worst moments of the season.

I had a very big crash at a start in 2008. It was not really my fault, but luckily I only broke eight ribs and punctured my lung!

WHO WAS YOUR TOUGHEST RIVAL AND WHY?

Stephanie Laier: Chiara Fontanesi, as she came through very strong and the rest of the top riders were missing.

Ken Roczen: There have been a couple this season. I  would say Tommy Searle and Jeffrey Herlings, but basically Jeffrey. Because of my mistakes he has always been close to the points, so I always had to fight hard to get three points every weekend, which is not much, as we have always been first and second. So Jeffrey has been my toughest rival.

WHICH RIDER IN ANOTHER DISCIPLINE DO YOU FOLLOW / RESPECT THE MOST?

Stephanie Laier: For sure, Sebastian Vettel because he lives only half an hour from my home. He is also a Red Bull rider and I have a lot of respect for him.

Ken Roczen: To be honest I have only been following Tony Cairoli in MX1. We are team mates and good friends.

IS THERE ANOTHER TYPE OF MOTORCYCLE SPORT YOU WOULD LIKE TO TRY?

Stephanie Laier: I would like to ride in a Dakar.

Ken Roczen: I don’t really know … I’d like to ride Enduro, ride in the woods and all that, but I haven’t really thought about it seriously yet.

WHAT WAS THE BEST MOMENT OF YOUR SEASON / CAREER?

Jorge Prado García: The best moment of the season was when I won the FIM World Title in Cingoli. I  really liked wining the European Championship in Germany because it was the first time I won both motos, although I had won both heats before, like in Cingoli. So that would be one of the best moments of my career so far.

Adrien Chareyre: I  think it was my triple victory in the Andorra Grand Prix. I  won all three heats. And it was the first time I won on the Aprilla, with my new team.

WHAT WAS THE WORST MOMENT OF YOUR SEASON / CAREER?

Jorge Prado García: The worst moment of the season and of my career would be during a race in France, where I crashed at the start and could not finish the race.

Adrien Chareyre: I  would say there were two bad moments. There was the first Grand Prix, where I had a technical problem in the first heat and didn’t finish, and of course the final, where I had a contact with my brother.

WHO WAS YOUR TOUGHEST RIVAL AND WHY?

Jorge Prado García: It was Tamur Talviku because in Cingoli, in the second heat, he was riding just behind me all the time until he crashed, and he had been behind me throughout the whole season as well!

Adrien Chareyre: I think this year it’s been my brother. Before, even though we were riding in the same category quite regularly, we were never in competition for the title. But this year we were, and that is harder to manage than with another rider.

WHICH RIDER IN ANOTHER DISCIPLINE DO YOU FOLLOW / RESPECT THE MOST?

Jorge Prado García: Adam Raga, Ricky Carmichael, Ken Roczen and Valentino Rossi.

Adrien Chareyre: I  am a great fan of motorcycling sport in general, and I  think what Stoner achieved this year was pretty incredible.

IS THERE ANOTHER TYPE OF MOTORCYCLE SPORT YOU WOULD LIKE TO TRY?

Jorge Prado García: I would like to ride in MotoGP.

Adrien Chareyre: Yes, I do quite a lot of Enduro and quite a lot of speed riding, and I’ve started to have a go at trial. I get a lot of fun out of all the disciplines I take part in. But I have a long way to go before I might think about changing to another discipline and really competing.

WHAT WAS THE BEST MOMENT OF THE SEASON?

Laia Sanz: Apart from the moment when I took the World Title, the Dakar this year was a very special experience, because crossing the finish line was not only a professional achievement, it was also a personal challenge. So this is why I would pick the Dakar as the best moment of the season and also of my career.

Toni Bou: The best moment of the season was the Barcelona Indoor, I  think. For me it is my home turf, it’s a very important race, and for the World Championship, this was a very important victory for me.

WHAT WAS THE WORST MOMENT OF YOUR SEASON / CAREER?

Laia Sanz: To be honest, this season everything has turned out really well, so I cannot complain much, but the worst moment of my career was when I  injured my knee in 2006 or 2007, I don’t really remember. I spent one year and a half recovering and it was really hard to get back to my 100%

Toni Bou: It was my first Indoor Wold Championship. It was really bad.

WHO WAS YOUR TOUGHEST RIVAL AND WHY?

Laia Sanz: Both Emma Bristow and Rebekah Cook have been the strongest riders this season, but maybe Emma has surprised me the most because she has been the revelation of the season.

Toni Bou: I think it’s Adam, Adam Raga. He’s a very good, strong rider. All year he’s pushing to win the races and in the last races he’s shown that he’s a tough man to beat.

WHICH RIDER IN ANOTHER DISCIPLINE DO YOU FOLLOW / RESPECT THE MOST?

Laia Sanz: I  follow almost everything, as I  really like pretty much all the motorcycling disciplines.

Toni Bou: I would say Taddy Blazusiak. He was a trial rider then he changed his speciality and won the World Championship. I think he’s an incredible rider.

IS THERE ANOTHER TYPE OF MOTORCYCLE SPORT YOU WOULD LIKE TO TRY?

Laia Sanz: I like everything (laughs). As well as the Dakar experience, I am now trying Enduro, and that is something that I am really keen on doing.

Toni Bou: I think Enduro Indoor. For trial riders it’s possible to adapt very fast because it’s very similar. I think the conditions in this discipline would be good for me.

IN ORDER TO ENCOUR AGE A GRE ATER AWARENESS OF ENVIRONMENTAL CONCERNS W ITHIN THE MOTORC YCLING WORLD, THE FIM HAS CREATED FIFTEEN YEARS AGO, AN ENVIRONMENTAL AWARD TO REWARD A  SIGNIFIC ANT CONTRIBUTION TO THE PROTECTION OF THE ENVIRONMENT.

This Award is given each year and it is granted for rewarding individuals, National Motorcycle Federations, Continental Unions, clubs, organisers, manufacturers or other organisations that have made a significant contribution or done something important to enhance environmental awareness in the field of motorcycling.

Candidatures for the Environmental Award are submitted to the FIM Administration by National Motorcycle Federations, Continental Unions, Specialised Associations or Board of Directors and are examined by an independent Jury.

The independent Jury is composed of one FIM Member of the Board, the FIM International Environment Commission Director and three independent experts chosen by the Board of Directors.

The Environmental Steward is the principal source of nominations for this important award. In the course of carrying out their responsibilities at FIM events, they should be vigilant in looking for examples of quality activities, innovative management of environmental challenges, and Federations or individuals doing an exemplary job. These nominations should be submitted, along with a description of the occurrence qualifying for the Award, to the FIM Administration with the event check-list.

The 2011 FIM Environmental Award was presented during the FIM Gala Ceremony held on 4 December in Estoril, Portugal. After having reviewed the 5 candidatures, the Jury decided to award Motorcycling Australia (MA) for their impressive work on the McAdam Park circuit to promote sustainability.

A special mention was also given by the Jury to Federación Catalana de Motociclismo (FCM) for their continuous effort to promote a sustainable motorcycling and for their support to the motorcycling community in the Catalan region.

ANDRéS PéREZ RUBIO

2011 FIM ROAD SAFETY AWARD

This year the award is made to Mr  Andrés Pérez Rubio. It recognises his exceptional contribution to the improvement of road safety for riders over many years. Recently he has come to public attention outside his native Spain for his work with the ROSA project. He worked with the European Union and other project

partners. These included in particular the Spanish Directorate General of Traffic, the FIM, the Real Federacion Motociclista Espanola (RFME), the Federaçao de Motociclismo de Portugal (FMP), the research institute CIDAULT and the company DORNA – the FIM’s commercial partner for MotoGP. Selected MotoGP events were used to showcase this work to the public.

The ROSA project concluded with an event held in the European Parliament where the results were presented. Prior to this Andrés Pérez Rubio has campaigned for many years to seek improvements in other aspects of road safety. Most notably in respect of road infrastructure. In this he and colleagues from Spain have been the leading advocates for improvements to roadside barriers. In 2007 he commenced work with the REAL AUTOMOVIL CLUB DE ESPANA bringing a new dimension to the work of the RFME.

One of the judges for the FIM Award, Dr Luciana Iorio, chairperson of the Road Safety Forum of the United Nations ECE in Geneva wrote to the FIM:

“Andrés Pérez Rubio is the right prominent example of a sport champion with a strong frame of mind and high resilience. He has transformed a personal setback to achieve valuable solutions in road safety for the motor bikers’ world.”

Andrés Pérez Rubio was twice Spanish road racing champion in the 500cc class in 1982 and 1985. In addition to his talents as a rider he was also an innovator in racing technology developing a linked braking system which he used on his Yamaha racing motorcycles. This was before this type of technology became as common as it is today on some road motorcycles.

In 1993 he suffered a serious road accident in which he lost both hands when he struck a roadside barrier. Showing exceptional fortitude he assisted with the management of the scene of the accident and subsequently surgeons were able to operate and save his hands. Despite continuing disability he is able still to drive and ride his scooter. His enthusiasm for road safety work continues and in 2011 he has also been appointed to the FIM Public Affairs Commission.

The FIM extends its thanks to the judges: Dr Luciana Iorio, Chairperson, Road Safety Forum of the United Nations ECE in Geneva; Mr Tim Buche, President of the Motorcycle Safety Foundation USA and Mr Antonio Avenoso, Executive Director of the European Transport Safety Council.

WHAT WAS THE BEST MOMENT OF YOUR SEASON / CAREER?

Juha Salminen: Well, this year there were many. There was no particular one. It’s been a really really, successful year for me. Of course the beginning is always exciting. You never know how it will go, so probably the first couple of GPs.

Antoine Méo: The whole season, actually. It was a very good season for me. I  experienced nothing but good moments.

WHAT WAS THE WORST MOMENT OF YOUR SEASON / CAREER?

Juha Salminen: There was no worst. No. It was a really, really successful year so I didn’t have any bad moments this year.

Antoine Méo: I  think the toughest moment of the season was in Greece. It was really hard going and lots of riders dropped out. All my main rivals had to withdraw, so it was quite difficult, I couldn’t do much.

WHO WAS YOUR TOUGHEST RIVAL AND WHY?

Juha Salminen: We had really good competition with the Finnish guys, my countrymen. We had the first three riders from Finland, so basically we were all in contention.

Antoine Méo: Everyone really, as we are all quite close, but mainly Johnny Aubert and Cristobal Guerrero, and Iván Cervantes. We were more or less four riders fighting it out of the same title, so I can’t say I had one particular rival.

WHICH RIDER IN ANOTHER DISCIPLINE DO YOU FOLLOW / RESPECT THE MOST?

Juha Salminen: I don’t follow anyone in particular. I just follow my own sport, what I do. All the champions, whatever sport it is, nothing happens in one year. They have a long career and a lot of work behind them, so all the top level sportsmen are pretty good.

Antoine Méo: My favourite rider in the other disciplines is Rossi, because he is still one of the best track riders ever, and because he’s Italian!

IS THERE ANOTHER TYPE OF MOTORCYCLE SPORT YOU WOULD LIKE TO TRY?

Juha Salminen: At this moment? Yes I have a trial bike, and I do a bit of this and that. I have had a go at many different sports – trial, motocross, road racing - over the years. It’s good to try different things but you have to remember what your job is.

Antoine Méo: I’d really like to practise all motorcycle sports, so it’s a bit difficult to say. I  do some trial and a bit of speed racing. I really like trial.

WHAT WAS THE BEST MOMENT OF YOUR SEASON / CAREER?

Tadeusz Błażusiak: The season was really good. It started with the World Championship, and I won quite a few things this year, so it was a great season overall.

Jérémy Joly: The best moment was the last race in France, because I won the title in the last race of the Championship after a big battle, and for me it was a great moment and a very special moment because it was in France, near my home. It was a very good moment.

WHAT WAS THE WORST MOMENT OF YOUR SEASON / CAREER?

Tadeusz Błażusiak: Hard to tell. My career has been a hell of a trip so far, so I don’t have a worst moment! The day I am done with it, I’ll look back and see which was the worst moment! Then I’ll let you know. (Laughs)

Jérémy Joly: The worst moment was maybe the first race of the season, because last year I was the winner of the Championship and I started with a bad race. I crashed in the first special test. Afterwards I made it back to the top position and I managed one podium, but it was a bad moment for me.

WHO WAS YOUR TOUGHEST RIVAL AND WHY?

Tadeusz Błażusiak: My toughest “rival” is just to stay fit and competitive. I don’t really look at anyone else. I just stay focused on my job and try to be as fast as I can, have the best bike and be competitive. So the biggest challenge is just to stay healthy all year.

Jérémy Joly: For me it was Juha Salminen in Enduro because he won eight titles, and two in the US. He had a very good, smooth style. I like this rider. He is a model for me.

WHICH RIDER IN ANOTHER DISCIPLINE DO YOU FOLLOW / RESPECT THE MOST?

Tadeusz Błażusiak: I pretty much follow all motor sport. Motocross, MotoGP, Formula one, I follow all these guys because they are so special and because they are worth following. I enjoy watching other guys racing, for sure.

Jérémy Joly: I follow all the disciplines and especially Motocross, and now Trial, because I train in Trial for Enduro, and Toni Bou is really incredible. I like Trial, it is very difficult discipline and I have a lot of respect for these guys

IS THERE ANOTHER TYPE OF MOTORCYCLE SPORT YOU WOULD LIKE TO TRY?

Tadeusz Błażusiak: I’ve been trying so many different things, and the sky is the limit! I don’t know. I have no plans for now. I would love to race a car one day, but that’s not motorcycle sport. We’ll see.

Jérémy Joly: I like training in Trial but I certainly couldn’t compete in it. I also like to do Motocross, but just for fun and practice. Now I sometimes do Enduro Cross or SuperEnduro, and maybe I could do well in those disciplines.

WHAT WAS THE BEST MOMENT OF YOUR SEASON / CAREER?

Camelia Liparoti: There were two, actually. I  started with a ninth place in the final overall rankings at the 2011 Dakar, so it was a really great moment on the podium in Buenos Aires. And the second high spot was getting my third world title at the Rally of the Pharaohs at the end of the season.

Hélder Rodrigues: To finally win the FIM Cross-Country Rallies Championship in Egypt.

WHAT WAS THE WORST MOMENT OF YOUR SEASON / CAREER?

Camelia Liparoti: I also had two of those! In the Dakar in 2009, I was forced to drop out on the last day, and I cried for six months, it was such a blow. And there was another bad moment, but it’s the sort of thing that happens in all races. I had a bad accident in the Rally of the Pharaohs in 2009. I literally took off from a dune and when I landed I got badly injured.

Hélder Rodrigues: When I crashed in Argentina, in 2007. That was a big crash and it took me a long time to recover and to be competitive again.

WHO WAS YOUR TOUGHEST RIVAL AND WHY?

Camelia Liparoti: As I’m in the quad category, I  am always included in two rankings, for women on motorcycles and mixed quads, men and women. I can’t really pick out one rival. We are all friends. In sports terms, it’s true, we are fighting for the title, but my number one rival is really myself.

Hélder Rodrigues: At the moment it can only be Marc Coma. It’s difficult to take him on because he is a strong and very intelligent rider. He’s on a good team with a good bike and they work really well too. It’s hard to compete against a set-up like that.

WHICH RIDER IN ANOTHER DISCIPLINE DO YOU FOLLOW / RESPECT THE MOST?

Camelia Liparoti: I really admire Luc Alphand, as he came from skiing like me. I moved from snow to riding quads and bikes in the sand, so we both moved from snow to sand, and from ski racing to motor racing. It’s true, Luc Alphand is like my “godfather” on the Dakar. He’s a friend and gives me lots of advice, and he’s something of an idol for me!

Hélder Rodrigues: I  follow everyone in the news a bit but there’s one rider I  respect most of all and that’s Stéphane PeterhanseI. I continue to follow his career with interest. He has had a great two-wheel career on the Enduro and Rally-Raid bikes and he has also driven in the cars category. He’s a great professional and has been able to win in all of them.

IS THERE ANOTHER TYPE OF MOTORCYCLE SPORT YOU WOULD LIKE TO TRY?

Camelia Liparoti: Yes, I do a bit of road riding, but not track. My dream would be do a Dakar or a World Championship on a buggy one day.

Hélder Rodrigues: I never tried road-racing and I would like to give it a go!

WHAT WAS THE BEST MOMENT OF YOUR SEASON / CAREER?

Maciej Janowski: My best moment this season was when I  won the FIM Speedway U-21 World Championship. It was something amazing for me. I had a dream of winning it one day and this year it came true!

Nikolai Krasnikov: No one else had ever taken so many FIM Ice Racing World Champion titles in a row, so when I achieved my seventh consecutive World Champion title in Inzell, winning both days of the competition, I can pretty much say that it was the best moment of my career.

WHAT WAS THE WORST MOMENT OF YOUR SEASON / CAREER?

Nikolai Krasnikov: I  believe it was when I  lost my best-engined bikes during the season through crashing.

Maciej Janowski: I  just had some bad days of course, like any other rider, with crashes and broken engines…

WHO WAS YOUR TOUGHEST RIVAL AND WHY?

Nikolai Krasnikov: Undoubtedly Igor Kononov, another Russian rider; he always got the best starts during the season so it was very difficult to fight back at him.

Maciej Janowski: Definitely Darcy Ward. He won two World Championships before me so he’s the hardest to beat at the moment. There were some big battles going on between us this year even though we’re good friends off the track.

WHICH RIDER IN ANOTHER DISCIPLINE DO YOU FOLLOW / RESPECT THE MOST?

Nikolai Krasnikov: I  ride Motocross during the summer but I  don’t have a favourite as I consider all of them as possible competitors… (smiles)

Maciej Janowski: I respect all of the riders here at the Gala for a start as I know how difficult it is for each one to be World Champion in their different categories, but above all I truly admire Greg Hancock. He’s my best friend and he’s also like my manager as he helps me out a lot. I also follow Valentino Rossi and Travis Pastrana’s successes, amongst others.

IS THERE ANOTHER TYPE OF MOTORCYCLE SPORT YOU WOULD LIKE TO TRY?

Nikolai Krasnikov: I would like to try MotoGP but there aren’t any circuits in Russia yet.

Maciej Janowski: I  love go-karts but they aren’t on two wheels… I would like to try a bit of every discipline on two wheels really, like Motocross for instance, but then I would like to try some go-karts! (laughs)
