At age 37, Isidora Cousiño not only found herself widowed with

6 children to raise, but with 3 businesses to run, including the

incomplete Macul Estate Winery. She was a visionary and a

philanthropist, who persuaded Thomas Edison to design a hydro-

electrical plant to bring electricity into Chile, and used her wealth

to help impoverished and orphaned children. Most importantly,

she single-handedly completed her late husband’s dream of

owning and operating a premier Chilean winery.

Today, after 150 years and 7 generations, Cousiño-Macul is still in

family hands where a new era of female leaders are rising to the

forefront. Isidora’s great-great-granddaughter, Verónica Cousiño

joined the winery in 2008 to learn the business from her father

and two uncles. Her devotion and commitment to the family

business has helped propel her to the role of Deputy Manager

of Marketing and Imports, with a long-term vision of leading the

winery forward.
