CommentThis is what journalists call 'the silly season'. Politicians are on holidayso we don't have them prattling on trying to sound important everytime you turn on the radio. Mind you it all rumbles on in thebackground and Trump continues to give good value. The issue ofBrexit is down to a dull roar though the 'People's Vote' campaignseems to keep the momentum going nicely.

A subject that I haven't heard aired lately is the call to reduce VATon replacement. This time last year I suggested that, by March nextyear, when we are scheduled to leave the EU, we will be free to set ourown VAT rates. It means all of the usual excuses, where thegovernment blames Brussels for everything even though it is complicitin the decisions, will no longer hold water. So, a reminder to therepresentative organisations that have influence in Westminster andWhitehall, let us ramp up our efforts and give the industry a boost.

As the deadly date approaches I get an uncomfortable feeling aboutour future. The Brexit campaign talked about repatriating powers fromthe EU to our parliamentary democracy. No more being told what todo by unelected officials.Well, the first thing that happened when thevote was won, by a very small margin I might add, was an attempt tosideline parliament and not allow our elected representatives to havea say in the shape of the leave deal.

The 'unelected' supreme court, fortunately, sorted that but sincethen we have seen wriggling and squirming as the Brexit lobby tried toblock parliament from having anything but a token input. Unfortunatelyparliament as a whole seems as wavering and divided as theConservative party itself.Tribal interests reign supreme and although, almost certainly, if the like minded ignored their party whips andremembered what parliamentary democracy is all about, the Brexitlobby would be beaten and firmly put in its place. They talk about the'will of the people' as though there was a thumping majority to leavethe EU when, in truth, it was only just over 50%.Those who voted toremain in the EU were thereafter made to feel like traitors anddisenfranchised to boot.

The truth is that our 'democracy' is in far more danger now than itever was while we belonged to the EU. (I know, past tense, we are stilla member right now but unless the remain camp 'mans-up' and doessomething about it we are 'dead country walking'.)

And as far as the will of the people is concerned, the Brexit lobbywhich is effectively running the government is totally ignoring thedeveloping demand by The People's Vote campaign to let us all haveanother say.

Whisper it in hushed tones, but can you think of any totalitarianregime in, say, the past 80 years, that was initially voted in by the willof its people?

(OK, that's my silly season rant. Next month back to windows –promise.)

MARKETING

The Fabricator 201810

Whether you are looking to launch a new product orservice or looking to venture into a new market

entirely, standing out from the crowd is more difficultthan ever.

Consumers are bombarded with thousands uponthousands of messages every single day across a hugearray of channels and media.

Which means two things – it’s much harder to keep yourname out there and, as a result, it means that PR andmarketing are more important than ever before.

I call it ‘white noise,’ and standing out amongst itdemands new levels of PR, more resources, creative skillsand technology than ever before, which is whyoutsourcing some or all your marketing makes businesssense.

PR needs to operate across print, digital, social and, ifrelevant, broadcast media and very few organisations caneffectively manage the complex mix of channels, tools andcontent that are a ‘must’ these days.

It’s no wonder then that many in-house marketingmanagers are stretched to breaking point. But whenlooking to outsource your marketing, who do you workwith? Do you appoint a PR agency to manage youreditorial and raise your business profile, a digitalmarketing company to manage your website and onlinemarketing, a creative agency to produce your brand anddesign work? What about video and social media?

Using multiple agencies is counter-productive, createsdelays, further expense, a lack of cohesion and sucks upunnecessary time and resources.

I see specialist agencies, such as graphic designers or PRconsultants, becoming a thing of the past, genericmarketing agencies without sector expertise will continueto struggle, and agencies that profess to be ‘full service’but outsource to third parties are also beginning to feelthe pinch, as they can’t meet client expectations.

Employing a full-service marketing agency means youbring together all the key marketing disciplines under oneroof with experts in PR, design and print, web designmarketing, video production and social media.

You have a dedicated marketing manager backed by ateam of people who specialise in every aspect oftraditional and online marketing, a team that understandsyour business and your products, knows the market andknows how your customers think and act.

By delivering fully integrated marketing campaigns, results are faster, messages are consistent, and costs arereduced. And you will be working with just one teamwhich provides a complete service and always goes theextra mile.

As the PR and marketing landscape changes, businessesneed to move with the times too. Employing a full-servicemarketing agency could be the best decision for yourbusiness that you ever make. ❐

timber sash windows foundin several London boroughsdown to the finest details.

“It had the slim meetingrail, deep bottom rail,Georgian bars and even anauthentic-looking putty lineeffect – a remarkableachievement, especiallybearing in mind this was backin 1985.

“That was a seminalmoment for us because it laidthe foundation of the designphilosophy we’ve carriedforward ever since. Today, weapproach every sash windowwe produce with the samedetail-is-all attitude weapplied to that very firstprototype.

“Where some companies are satisfied with somethingthat looks close enough to a vintage timber original, westrive for something that’s identical – right down to therun-through sash horns, the putty lines, the fullmechanical joints and so on.

“That’s meant we’ve had to take risks, and, on manyoccasions, go it alone. When our systems companiesinnovated as far as they were willing to go, but we wantedto push the envelope even further, we startedmanufacturing ourselves. We produce windows that arebased on Eurocell and Rehau profiles, but totally ourown.”

Today, the Eurocell-based, specification-friendlyCharisma Rose, the conservation-sensitive Rehau-basedHeritage Rose, and the G-Award-winning Ultimate Roseare considered the pinnacle of vintage-look PVC-U – butwhere some fabricators would be thoroughly satisfied withthose achievements, Roseview’s focus is on pushingboundaries even further.

Sales director Richard Burrells says: “We’re in businessto make sash windows – the highest performing, mostauthentic sash windows available anywhere in the UK,backed by the best customer service in our industry. Andthat means that in 2018, just like every other year, our aimwill be making Britain’s best PVC-U sash windowproducts even better.” ❐

VERTICAL SLIDERS & HERITAGE WINDOWS

The Fabricator 201812

The very first sash windows appeared in the earlysixteenth century, born as much out of necessity as

style – streets were narrow, and windows that openedoutwards reduced the available space even further.

The product’s iconic vertical-sliding mechanism, therefore, came about as a space-saving measure – but itwas one that presented a number of design obstacles thatneeded to be overcome.

Once opened, the sliding sash had to be kept up.Initially, this was achieved with crude wooden pegs orwedges. By the seventeenth century, these had beenreplaced with more sophisticated weights and pulleys.

But if the earliest sash windows were very practical, itwasn’t long before they were eagerly seized on as both afashion statement and status symbol. At the time, glasswas an incredibly valuable commodity, sometimes moreexpensive than gold, and windows became a way ofshowing your wealth.

In the beginning, technological limitations meant sashwindows could only feature very small glass panes andhad to have thick glazing bars. But as time went on, andboth glass-making and joinery techniques improved, thepanes became larger, and the supporting bars becameslimmer and more elegant.

By the Edwardian period, when sash windows werewidespread, they were often huge, stretching from floor toceiling. The iconic sash horn was introduced to cope withthese much heavier panes.

In the mid-twentieth century, however, tastes andpriorities changed. For a time, sash windows fell out offashion – and as focus shifted to mass-produced whitePVC-U, far cheaper, easier to manufacture and simpler tomaintain than timber, almost three-quarters of the UK’ssash windows were lost.

But the 1980s brought the beginnings of a sash windowrenaissance – thanks in no small part to Roseview. WhilePVC-U had quickly become the norm in the new buildsector, that still left thousands of historic buildings withageing original timber sash windows that neededreplacing.

Conventional white plastic windows couldn’t cut it onthe most historically sensitive projects – which led to thecollaboration between Roseview, PVC-U systemscompany Rehau and London’s Peabody Trust thatresulted in the UK’s, if not the world’s, first PVC-U sashwindow.

Heavily involved at the time was Willie Kerr, then atechnical engineer, now Roseview’s managing director.“That first PVC-U sash window product was reallyground-breaking,” Kerr says. “We worked incrediblyclosely with the Peabody Trust to emulate the kind of

The sash renaissanceIt’s one of those products they got right the first time – a timeless, a stylish, quintessentially Englishdesign that immediately evokes the elegance of centuries past. Now we are seeing a renaissance ofthe sash window and its a style that Olney fabricator Roseview is passionate about. For forty years, the secret to Roseview’s success has been its scholarly knowledge of sash window history, andrespect for classic design

Halo fabricator Masterframe is celebrating 30years in business with a significant investment

in new welding technology. The Essex-based firmspecialises in PVC-U windows in authentic sashstyles and won a 2017 National Fenestration awardfor being ‘Timber AlternativeWindow Company’ ofthe year, using Masterframe-bespoke Halo profileto produce box sash systems.

2018 sees Masterframe celebrate 30 years inbusiness and bring a new welding solution to themarket.

Masterframe replicates the look of mortise andtenon joints found in original timber box sashwindows using a welded construction. Thecompany patented this technique in 2005, wherebutt joints are vertical rather than horizontal, tooffer an alternative to timber windows thatcombines authentic style with modern technologyand performance.

Carol Slade, sales and operations director says:“This method of construction gives the perfect lookwhilst ensuring that the profiles are perfectly sealedwith no open chambers. Initially we beganproducing the corners for our windows by hand, before commissioning a welder that could achieve itin 2016 and registering the Timberweld trademark. Now,in the same year we celebrate 30 years in business, we’rethrilled to have invested in a bespoke four-head welder foreven greater productivity, accuracy and consistency. It isthe most complicated piece of equipment we have everpurchased and it took around a week to commission andprogramme the software to run the welder, connect themachine to our existing SV 430 corner cleaner and trainour operatives.

funded by, ‘It’s Good 2 Give!’ charity. The Kettle Architects designed, multi-award-winning structure is informed and inspired byits lakeside location in the Trossachs nationalpark. This is reflected in the rippling roof, clad inpigmento blue zinc to capture the changing light, and in the expanses of glazed façade whichconnect the interior to the building’s idyllic settingand provide important visibility to play areas. With endless design flexibility, Metal Technologysystems were pivotal to the project, which utilisedSystem 17 capped curtain walling, System 5-20Dand System 25 lift-and-slide doors and System5-20 tilt-and-turn windows. These systems were chosen for their positivecontribution to the creative aesthetic and theirall-round performance, meeting Kettle’s criteria of“a model sustainable building both in its layoutand specification.” All Metal Technology Systemsare designed to deliver impressive ascetics withfull structural integrity, high levels of weatherperformance and thermal enhancement, whetherused in isolation or in an integrated scheme.

fenestration systems in Europe, produces dies that arededicated to each finish. The more expensive, often handfinished dies, are kept for anodising specifications.Another key to creating a good anodised finish is theability to extrude and anodise within a short space of time, thereby reducing the opportunity for natural oxidisationbeginning to occur.Aluprof extrudes profile through thesehigher quality dies which offer higher quality surfaces freefrom ‘die lines’ and once etched and anodised offer a highquality surface which is both very hard wearing and longlasting.

Anodising is also now becoming a choice forpretreatment of aluminiumprior to powder coating. Avery thin anodising of justfive microns seals thealuminium prior to powdercoating. This sealing or‘conversion coating’ hastraditionally been completedin chrome or chrome freecoatings. The claim for theuse of ‘pre-anodising’ or‘flash anodising’ prior topowder coating is that itavoids the appearance of atype of corrosion known asfiliform corrosion.

Anodising plants are also very costly to design andinstall, utilising high voltage and specialist transformers torapidly and evenly create an anodised finish. Because of itscombined use of a finish in its own right and as a‘conversion coating’ prior to powder coating, in the UKalone there has been two new anodising plants come on-line in the last couple of years with further plants planned.

As specifiers tend to specify shades of grey for themajority of fenestration projects, anodising can bespecified in both bronze finish and shades of grey. This iscreated by the introduction of trace metals such as cobaltor tin during the anodising process. Interestingly, as theanodising is ‘clear’, the introduction of these metals formsan optical colour, which cannot fade over time.

Crucial for specifiers is the knowledge that higherquality dies should be used for producing profiles foranodising and this is something that should find its wayinto specification for the finish.

Aluprof systems are increasingly being specified on awide range of residential and commercial projects acrossthe UK including Passivhaus projects. Systems aredesigned, fabricated and installed by selected, speciallytrained local companies, to ensure each fabricatedproduct meets Aluprof’s exacting standards. ❐

Staying with residential home improvement in the1980’s, the new material on the market was PVC.

Expensive at the time, the product offered good insulationand promised a long life with virtually no maintenance.Over the following decade, the PVC revolution decimatedthe aluminium systems, despite white finishes becomingavailable for aluminium in both electrophoretic andpolyester powder coating finishes.

In the commercial aluminium facade market, polyesterpowder coating gave architects the ability to use a widerange of bright colours in their designs. The ability ofpowder coating to ‘cover all’, including blemishes in theextrusion seems the perfectfinish and, whilst few peoplewould admit in theindustry, aluminium dieswere produced cheaper asthe surface finish of theprofile was often to becovered over with a sixtymicron coating of ‘paint’.These same profiles, whenused for anodising, oftenshowed ‘die lines’ which, whilst not unattractive, specifiers were notcomfortable with. Powdercoating quickly becamemore economic to apply than anodising and became thefinish of choice. In an interesting turn more recently, thepowder coat industry has introduced ‘anodic’ finishes tomimic anodised finishes.

Powder coating has advanced a great deal over the yearsand offers exceptional quality for architectural aluminiumprofiles but, architects and specifiers are looking back tothe base material itself and want to use it in its natural state. So, what is anodisiong? In simple terms, it is a controlled‘corrosion’ of the surface of the aluminium, turningaluminium into ‘aluminium oxide’ similar to iron oxide(rust) on steel. The difference with aluminium oxide isthat once it has been created on the surface of thealuminium it completely seals the base aluminium fromfurther corrosion, unlike steel. So anodising is not anapplied finish but a conversion of the surface of thealuminium, so it will not peel or flake. Done to the rightquality, the material life expectancy can last many decadesand will not fade.

So what about the ‘die lines’? Simply put, extrusion diesthat have visible faces require more attention prior to use. These dies need to be polished and cleaned moreregularly as the extrusion process can be quite abrasive onthe surface of the die.

Aluprof, one of the largest producers of aluminium

The anodising ageBack in the 1970’s architectural aluminium, shopfronts, windows and curtain wall, was available inanodised finishes. These finishes were limited to silver, bronze and black. In the day, replacementwindow companies often offered a silver framed aluminium casement window set in a hardwoodframe. The finish was exceptionally robust and if you look round today, some of these homeimprovement windows are still performing well. So why did we all but stop using anodised finishes?
