PRESIDENT’S PEN

Hi to all. How are we all going with this cold weather, some days it is so hard to get warm unless you are sitting on top of the heater! Our members are still turning up every week which is great but the weight losses aren’t so good. Myself I am finding it hard with no motivation, but I hope to do better. I try to keep the meetings shorter these cold nights. I would like to say a big thank you again to all the clubs who sold ALL their raffle books, and this will be drawn at the AGM on July 31st. The Slimmer of the Year photos will be on display on that day so those who would like to order some can do so. Any clubs that would like us to visit please ring the office as we always like to see how you are doing and perhaps get new ideas, of course these are welcome at ANY time. Please note that members’ guides and daily menus are now only $4 each and a great idea also for your new members. Any clubs having guest speakers please let the office know so we can add them to our list. It is never easy to get people to come at low cost! Try and keep warm and see you at the AGM –It won’t be long before the country forum- hope many will attend as it isn’t too far this year. Take Care. Aileen

A Big Thank-You to New Wanneroo Slimmers Club

For Their Kind Donation of $50.00

This Will Be Used To Purchase 2 X $25.00 Vouchers for the Raffle at the AGM

GERALDTON SUNSHINE SLIMMERS

I start this article off this month by telling of the sad passing of two of our members. Jean Maddren passed away after a long illness in May. The very sudden untimely death of one of our members Diana Powell was a shock to us all.

Jean unfortunately had been ill for some time, but Diana gave us all a shock, she had a fall in her shower last year and broke her hip, just before her trip of a lifetime to Paris, having that fixed, we all expected Diana to be back at the club, with her infectious smile and laugh. She did come back but she sadly passed away last week. Our Very sincere condolences go to her family.

As we all get older ladies, we all need to be very careful, whether in the shower or walking around the house.

Our club hosted a morning tea for our Slimmer of the Year, Marilyn Heberle this past Thursday, all the food was donated by the members, and of course was delicious.

It was also nice to read an article from the Slimmer of the Year - Naomi Anderson from the Forrestfield Weight Watchers Club. Congratulations Naomi, keep up the good work.

With this cold weather – soups should be on the agenda, there is nothing better than a big bowl of vegetable soup for lunch.

Well here it is July and time now to plan for our Christmas luncheon, which this year will be held at the Rovers Football club.

Until Next Time……………Florence

ELLENBROOK COMMUNITY WEIGHT LOSS CLUB What a cold June we have had and it is still continuing, I am just about over it. Bring on the Spring/Summer. Our numbers have started to grow again towards the 20 mark but it would be nice to have them up around the 30 mark, but maybe having our club meetings on a Wednesday evening is deterring people from attending I don't know the answer. We had a Buddy's competition that ran for 3 months and our Winners were Caroline Eisenhauer and Coral Pash both received $25.00 each. Our Biggest Loser from the Buddy's competition with the most weight lost was Carol Eisenhauer and she received $50.00 cash. Then if that was not enough she also won the Apple Tree and another $50.00 and then she reached her Consistency losing weight for 12 weeks and weighing in every week and losing every week, what a great achievement. Carol has lost weight every week since February and only had one night off. Then one of our new members Pauline Olsen also lost for 12 weeks and was awarded her Consistency Award with $50.00 cash. She also gained statics on our Transformers Club losing 5kilos now she is on her way to losing 10kg. Pauline Olsen was also our Princess of the Month with a loss of 3.5kg. John Sardelich & Coral Pash received there 3 monthly Graduates Award for keeping within their goal weight. SOUP NIGHT: We have six members who are volunteering to bring in BIG POTS OF SOUP, and I know that they will be taking home empty pots. We the club are so grateful for these members volunteering to make the soups and they will be presented with $20.00 each for their time & expenses. ANNUAL GENERAL MEETING: We will be holding our A.G.M. on the last Wednesday in July & with a bit of luck we will get a full committee for 2016/2017. Until next time Club President Shirley Sardelich

HAMERSLEY/WARWICK WEIGHT WATCHERS Our motivational speaker was excellent. He helped us to see a lot of things that we can change, to have a healthier and enjoyable life style. We can all do it All of our members are very supportive to each other. Well done ladies. One of our new members Nicole is very motivated and achieving her goals which is an inspiration to all. Our shared tea this month was Xmas in July. All Xmas low calorie food and enjoyed by all. Jean one of our members, gave an interesting talk about one of her hobbies - Oil painting and displayed some of her items. What a talented lady we have. David gave an excellent talk on searching The Family Tree. How interesting was David’s talk. David brought along, a lot of his paper work that he has collected over the years. Well worth the search. Linley organized a memory game, with different items example: toothpaste, jelly, spices and tin food. There were 20 items in all. They were placed on the table and we were able to look at them. Linley then covered them up and we had to remember what was there. It really tested our memory. What fun and laughter we had. We also had a very informative evening, with members bringing along a low calorie food item to check out. We checked the food labels of the items i.e. calories, fats, salt and sugar and we discussed how we used these items in our cooking. We all went home with an item. Kind regards Shelley

BELMONT WEIGHT WATCHERS On 14 June Belmont WW held their annual Biggest Morning Tea. The RSL was transformed as members brought their finest china and table decorations. There were dozens of plates of sweet and savoury treats and a whole table of raffle prizes. All of the 61 members and guests looked lovely in their pink scarves or hats. Everyone enjoyed the food, fun and friendship.

Best of all, the morning raised $1,600 in funds to support cancer research. A huge thank you to everyone for their time, effort and generous donations which helped makes the event our best yet. Three morning tea guests had such a good time they decided to join our club and so we welcome new members Anne, Julie and Gaye.

June saw not one but two members reach their goal weight and attain Keeper-in-Waiting status. This is a great achievement - well done Bev and Rosemarie. Teri also received a Gold Star for the biggest loss over 3 months. Keep up the good work everyone! June was also a big month for birthdays and we celebrated with Andrew, Linda and Maggie. If you need a bit of assistance with everyday tasks, Daily Living Products may be able to help. Their presentation and demonstration of an amazing number of products designed to make life safer and easier was a huge success. July sees our club starting a new competition so hopefully we’ll all see you lighter next month. Regards Maggie

MOORE RIVER WEIGHT WATCHERS Elizabeth was our Princess for the month of June and also won our Pinnacle Challenge. We have all been feeling the cold but trying hard to stay warm without eating too much.

A lot of our members have been away travelling in their caravans or tripping overseas to enjoy some extra warmth.

Thank you

Madeline

BUSSLETON WASPS We had our weekly meeting this evening after the two week break for the school holidays. Busselton has been so wet and so cold this winter, a reminder of times gone by according to several old timers, but a shock to the system none the less!! Not all members turned up, so p’raps next week will be an improvement with a bit of sunshine for encouragement. Narelle has re-joined our little group after a lengthy break. Two of our ladies, Lois and Sylvia are not too well this evening so we wish them well. Sylvia is also coping with moving her home, still in Busselton which is good news for us! Do hope the AGM is/was a success. Saw this in a Reader digest at the Drs surgery, as you do, and I could remember it till I got home….”Have you noticed that all bottled water has the “best before date” printed on it ? The water has circled the earth for four billion years. But now it’s ruined? Trying to remember the name of the Finnish comedian who wrote that was a step too far! Looking forward to reading about the AGM and hopefully some new suggestions that may have been offered to the meeting Kind regards Valerie (Hon sec)

ESPERANCE WEIGHT WATCHERS Once again we greet everyone from the lovely town of Esperance. We have been having a cold winter with lots of nice rain. The fire ravaged areas from the Novembers 2015 fires are showing signs of rejuvenation. A recent trip to Kalgoorlie confirmed this. We have been quite busy these past two months with special speakers and steady weight loss on part of several members. Andres Scott from Population Health was a really interesting speaker. She presented a well prepared and informative session on healthy living. Three meetings ago we visited the local Community Arts centre. The visit was most enjoyable and we finished the visit by having afternoon tea there. Last week Elaine organised a Purple Bra cancer support afternoon tea. Elaine brought some purple bras along and quite a few members wore them at the meeting. Francis and Elaine organised some games centred on purple items, the quizzes had us doing some thinking and using our rusty old minds. Lauren one of our members has been crocheting tea towels to make nice colourful hand towels for our best weight loss winner each week. A special thank you must go to Lauren. Our club was able to sell all the raffle tickets we were sent and now we are waiting for someone from Esperance to win the big prize. Well at least we can hope. On the 14th July we are holding our AGM. Several office bearers are retiring this year. We are hoping that some new members will want to take their places. Another happy occasion was when we presented Bethel with a bunch of flowers on the celebration of her 88th birthday. Congratulations also to Shirley Grigson who has been attending weight watchers clubs in Esperance for 41 years. She is one of our most faithful members. Frances Graham Secretary

INTERESTING WEIGHTLOSS FACTS No 1.

Kilometres and miles both measure the same thing – distance. It’s the same with kilojoules and calories, except instead of measuring distance, they measure energy; the energy in the food and drink we consume, and the energy our bodies need for bodily functions such as breathing, digesting food and moving.

‘Calories’ is the old unit and it’s still used in some countries like the USA. ‘Kilojoules’ is the new unit, and that’s the one we use here in Australia.

For the record, 1 calorie = 4.2kJ and 1kJ = 0.2 calories, so 200 calories is the same as 840 kilojoules.

Did you know that one slice of bread is equivalent to 70 calories or 300 kilojoules and that a BIG MAC happy meal with large coke and chips has the same calories as a whole loaf of bread

No 2.

We all know that soft drink is high in sugar, but you’d be amazed where else you’ll find sugar in high concentrations.

Think yoghurt, pasta sauce, kids’ cereal and, yes, tomato sauce. While soft drink is up to 10% sugar, tomato sauce, barbecue sauce and sweet chili sauce can be loaded with up to 54% sugar.

Moral of the story; check the labels, ease up on the sauce and think about some alternatives like a veggie salsa.

RECIPES

Low Calorie Highland Stew (5:2 Diet)

Ingredients 1 organic, low-fat, low-salt vegetable stock cube (made up with 300ml of water) 1 large onion, peeled and diced 2 cloves garlic, peeled and minced 2 small leeks, cleaned. trimmed and sliced 2 medium carrots, peeled and diced 250g potatoes, peeled and cut into small dice 1 stick celery, cleaned, trimmed and diced 50g Pearl Barley, 50g red lentils Optional 100g low-fat smoked sausage (cut into small slices) Note A hearty low-calorie Scottish inspired stew packed with vegetables and pulses, as well as low-fat smoked sausage if using. A bowl of this warming stew is only 150 calories per portion with the sausage or 125 calories without, making it a fabulous meal to have on fast days for those following the 5:2 diet or weight watchers. Vegetarian sausage can be added as an option, just make sure you add the appropriate calories. Directions 1. Pour the vegetable stock into a large saucepan and add the onions, garlic, leeks, carrots, potatoes and celery and bring to the boil. Reduce to heat to a simmer, add the pearl barley and red lentils and simmer for 30 to 45 minutes or until the vegetables are soft and the pulses are cooked.

2. Season to taste with salt and pepper, and add the smoked sausage if using. Adjust the liquid if the stew is too thick and continue to heat for a further 5 minutes before serving with dumplings (non-diet), bread, crisp breads or croutons.
