SPRING 2012 THE LOREM IPSUMS

AstroDance  Visits  Fanwood!

On  Tuesday,  May  28th,  Fanwood  hosted  the  performing  group,  AstroDance.    AstroDance  is  an  innovative  multimedia  performance  that  uses  dance  to  tell  the  story  of  black  holes  and  the  gravitational  pull  of  particles  in  the  universe.

Their  performance  blended  live  dancers,  narration,  multimedia  imagery  and  film  that  created  and  educational  and  entertaining  experience.    The  show  was  created  and  choreographed  by  Thomas  Warfield,  director  of  dance  at  the  NTID.  AstroDance  is  a  joint  project  between  RIT’s  College  of  Science,  the  B.    Thomas  Golisano  School  of  Computing  and  Information  Sciences,  and  NTID’s  Performing  Arts  program,  and  intends  to  provide  deaf,  hard-‐of-‐hearing  and  hearing  children  and  adults  with  general  information  and  basic  concepts  from  the  fields  of  gravitational  physics  and  astrophysics  while  engaging

them  in  an  enjoyable  and  interesting  theatrical  experience.

After  the  performance,  the  dancers  took  some  time  for  questions  and  answers  from  the  students.    After

the  question  and  answer  session,  they  stayed  even  longer  to  talk  to  groups  of  students  who  wanted  to  ask  more  in  depth  questions.    Students  asked  questions  about  whether  it  was  difficult  for  the  dancers  to  keep  rhythm  to  what  their  college  experience  was  like  to  how  they  chose  their  majors.    It  was  a  great  experience  for  our  students  and  a  perfect  opportunity  to  talk  with  college  students.

STAFF  NIGHT  OUT  Due  to  the  Prom  on  May  31st,  Staff  Night  Out  is  canceled

this  month.    Thanks  and  see  you  in  the  fall  :  )

Positive,  Behavioral  Interventions  and  Support-‐PBIS

On  May  15th,  all  educational  staff  members  met  in  the  Auditorium  for  PBIS  training.      Positive,  Behavioral  Interventions  and  Supports  helps  to  create  a  Proactive  School  Wide  Discipline  Plan  which  will  be  the  framework  for  designing  and  implementing  proactive  and  preventive  interventions.    PBIS  involves  six  components:  1.  Select  Expectations  and  define  rules    2.  Teach  behavior  and  routines    3.  Actively  monitor  behavior    4.  Acknowledge  appropriate  behavior    5.  Review  data    6.  Correct  Behavioral  errors.        This  supplements  our  current  discipline  plan  with  teaching  social  skills  lessons.    There  is  also  a  focus  on  being  positive  and  acknowledging  positive  behaviors.  This  plan  looks  at  behavior  in  various  school  settings,  including:  classrooms,  hallways,  bathrooms,  arrival/  dismissal,  cafeteria,  etc.            This  year,  a  Fanwood  core  team  of  six  staff  members  received  training  at  PNWBOCES  on  4  different  occasions.    Now  we  have  a  team  of  ten  staff  members  to  work  on  implementing  this  program.    The  meeting  on  Wednesday,  May  15th  focused  on  designing  two  expectations  for  students  in  the  cafeteria  and  hallways.      Robert  March,  Ph.  D,  Director  of  Successful  Schools.  Inc.    www.  successfulschools.org

Looking  For  a  Suitable  Home  for  a  Deaf  Labrador  Retriever  Puppy

Recently,  we  received  a  message  from  a  breeder  of  champion  Labrador  puppies.    She  has  asked  Fanwood  to  share  her  message  with  the  community.    If  you  are  interested  in  adopting  this  puppy,  or  know  of  someone  interested,  feel  free  to  contact  her  directly.    Her  contact  information  is  included  below.      I  am  a  breeder  of  champion  Labrador  Retrievers,  living  here  in  Westchester.  I  breed  infrequently,  and  only  when  I  want  to  continue  a  bloodline  of  a  dog  that  typifies  all  the  wonderful

qualities  of  this  fantastic  breed.  In  my  most  recent  litter,  born  8  weeks  ago,  I  have  a  deaf  puppy.  She  was  diagnosed  at  4  weeks  using  a  BAER  test  (brainstem  auditory  evoked  response)  performed  by  a  leading  veterinary  neurologist.  He  confirmed  what  I  knew,  she  is  completely  deaf,  healthy,  normal  and  happy.  Conventional  wisdom,  in  the  past,  has  dictated  that  these  puppies  be  euthanized.  However,  there  has  been  much  advancement  in  training  deaf  puppies  and  dogs.    After  much  soul-‐searching,  I  have  decided  to  keep  this  little  girl  for  a  couple  of  months  and  start  her  initial  training  which  will  involve  hand  signals  and  the  use  of  a  vibrating  collar.  It  occurred  to  me  that  if  I  could  find  a  suitable  home  where  the  family  is  not  dependent  on  auditory  communication  but  rather  visual  communication  and  sign  language,  the  puppy  could  really  thrive.  She  is  a  delightful  puppy,  the  daughter  of  two  Grand  Champions  who  have  all  their  health  clearances  and  were  bred  for  their  outstanding  temperaments.  The  mother  lives  here  with  me  in  Scarsdale  and  is  a  delight  to  live  with.    I  thought  perhaps  you  might  have  some  thoughts  on  this  idea.  If  you  do,  please  feel  free  to  get  in  touch.  I  can  best  be  reached  by  cell  phone:  914-‐522-‐9751  or  via  email.  If  you  would  like  to  see  my  website,  you  can  go  to:  www.ridgecrestlabradors.com    Thank  you  for  your  time,      Betsy  Broyd
