The Family Project

The Family Project indaga en la memoria familiar, pero también en la desmemoria y el olvido. He remontado el siglo XX para reconstruir las huellas que mi familia ha ido dejando marcadas en los mapas a lo largo de cien años de migraciones. He recopilado miles de fotografías y documentos de archivos institucionales y familia-res y he buscado fotografiar en cada lugar una atmosfera que hablara de lo que allí ocurrió. Este es un proceso de infinitas conexiones, que se va abriendo como las muñecas rusas. Cada capa de la historia se posa frágilmente sobre la anterior. Desvelar sus capas para narrarlas es, de algún modo, cambiar la historia.

The Family Project explores family memory, but also memory lapses and oblivion. I returned to the 20th century to piece together the traces that my family has left on maps in the course of a century of migrations. I compiled thousands of photo-graphs and documents from institutional and family archives, and in each place I tried to photograph a mood that captures what happened there. This is a process of infinite connections, which opens up like Russian dolls. Each layer of history rests delicately on the previous one: to disclose its layers in order to narrate them is, in a sense, to change history.
