Welcome to the winter issue of the Family Grapevine for the Bath area. In this issue you will see a few changes. The first change is that unfortunately due to family issues Debbie is no longer able run this edition and has sadly passed it over to me. I would like to thank her for all the hard work she has put in during her tenure as editor.

The next change is that from this issue onwards we will be including a section on forthcoming events. This time the focus is predominantly Christmas based and we have included Christmas shows and Pantomimes, where to find Santa and other family events. We will also be adding these and other events to our website calendar. If you have an event happening let me know the details.

The next change will be to expand the area and so from the March issue it will include listings from the Frome and Trowbridge area.

We have a number of exciting competitions this time where you can win a spar treatment, a ride on Santa special and kids DVDs. There is also a new feature called Douggie’s Diary which is the diary of a rescue dog and how he settles into his new life.

We do hope you enjoy this issue as well as finding it useful. Have a great Christmas and New Year.

Kiddies mad turkey pies“My children had great fun helping me make these especially when I encouraged them to use their play dough cutters to personalise their own pies!! They also helped by cutting the cooked leftover veggies and chicken into small bite size pieces with a blunt knife. Sometimes I substituted half the veggies with their favourite vegetable, which was frozen sweet corn. This added colour to the dish and encouraged them to eat their results.”Ingredients• Block of readymade or homemade

pastry• 1 or 2 handfuls of cold leftover

vegetables• 1 or 2 handfuls of cold turkey meat• Basic white sauce {25g of plain flour/

25g of butter/300ml of milk}• Ramekins per child• Tbsp of stuffing, optional

• Salt and pepper• Optional 1/2 tbsp of any leftover creamMethod1. Make the white sauce; put the butter in a pan and add the flour. Gradually add the milk whilst stirring until the sauce has thickened and smooth. Add some cream and season with salt and pepper.2. Chop up the veggies, turkey and stuffing into bite size portions. Add to the white sauce and taste. Add more seasoning if required.3. Place one or two tbsp into the individual ramekins and top with rolled out pastry.4. Ask the children to design their own pie with the pastry trimming and brush with milk.5. Place into a hot oven approx Gas mark 7 / 425 F/ 220C for 15 to 20 minutes until golden.

Douggie’s Diary,

My name is Dougal, but you can call me Douggie. I am a good boy and I have a new home.I have had many homes before but I hope I stay in this one.I have two new “sisters” one called Holly and she is silly and the other

called Jess and she is old. They have both had other homes before this one. I am a “Heinz 57” which means I am very lovely, according to my new “Mum”. Holly is a spaniel and Jess is a sort of labrador. Jess and I play games in the house and make lots of noise and we are told to “stopmakingthatawfulracket”. Holly and I go chasing things on our walks and we dig huge holes together. We all like barking very loudly when someone comes to the door. We keep our loudest barks for the postman.I hope I can stay in this home because I am happy. I have been here now for 3 months and I am starting to feel as if it could be my home for always. It is not easy to settle into a new home and to learn all the new things I can and can’t do. I think I will write a diary to tell you how I am getting on.I like to greet my new Mum and Dad by holding their arms in my mouth. I only chew on them a bit; to show how very happy I am. They seem to think this is not good. They keep saying things like “no” and “off” and “gotoyourbasket.I don’t like cats or joggers or flies or “stopmakingthatawfulracket”. I like cuddles and walks and my new house and Jess and Holly and my Mum and Dad and “goodboys”.I have overheard that there are plans to bring a big tree into the house soon. I think my humans may have gone mad. Who has a big tree in their house?

Every child wants to see Father Christmas at Christmas time, but busy shops with long queues full of children waiting up to a couple of hours can quickly drain you of your Christmas cheer.

The Avon Valley Railway has a far more attractive and original idea. Every weekend from Late November to Christmas Eve, Father Christmas will be on the steam train at the Avon Valley Railway. Accompanied by his helpers he will make his way along the train, stopping to talk to all the children and, providing they have been good, give them each a quality present. Parents are not neglected as everyone will also receive a delicious mince pie or festive biscuit. The six mile round trip takes approximately one hour, during which time, from the comfort of your reserved seats, all the family can enjoy the splendid views of the Avon Valley from the old fashioned carriages and experience the unique sights, sounds and smells of a bygone age when steam was king. Up to six trips depart throughout the day. Tickets are priced from £9.00 each for children and adults. In comparison with the average charges made to see Santa in the high street stores, the train tickets are excellent value for money.The dates of our Santa Specials are 27 November, 3-5, 10-11, 17-18 and 23-24 December 2011.
