THE PRESIDENT’S CORNERAs most of you know by now, The Arts Center In Orange has completed phase one of our renovation plan thanks to the generosity of our community.

We are a community arts center and with the renovations we have more space that can be used by other community clubs and organizations to hold gatherings. We have always welcomed everyone to use our facilities, but now we can accommodate larger groups. Our gallery can seat up to 50 people and our expanded classroom area can accommodate up to 100.

One group that has made good use of our facilities is the Women’s Diversity Forum (WDF). Founded by Gail Marshall and Rebecca Coleman in 2011, the WDF is an open and informal gathering of Orange County women interested in improving cross-cultural communication by sharing ideas, concerns and information. I am happy to report that on Sunday, October 29 at 1:30pm in the Arts Center’s classroom, the WDF will sponsor a program by Judy Peterson. Judy will interview a panel of local women who have achieved doctorates in their various fields about their choices and their professional journeys. Attendees are encouraged to bring a daughter, granddaughter, or young friend to hear these inspiring stories. Please, let us know if we can facilitate a meeting for you.

And, be sure to check out our fall class schedule. I’m sure you can find something to stimulate your creativity.

I hope to see you at the center soon.

Ed Harvey

CROSSING PATHSPlatinum-Palladium Photography by Ellen Martin& Altered Paper by Martha Olson

Ellen Martin and Martha Olson first crossed paths at the Rockbridge Arts Guild, Art on the Green, in Lexington, VA, in 2009. Ellen, a Lexington photographer, was busy with the operation and organization of the event, yet still managed to photograph the day’s activities for the local press, including Martha who was an honored winner. Martha, a Blacksburg, VA, artist, was a first-time exhibitor in Lexington and felt a little out of her element.

Unbeknownst to Martha, it was Ellen’s husband, Larry, who made several stops by her booth admiring her work. This seemed curious to Martha and her husband, Thomas. Eventually Larry and Ellen (mystery solved) came to Martha’s booth together and purchased one of Martha’s art pieces. Who would have guessed that this one brief encounter would lead to their paths crossing for exhibitions many times during the next eight years?

Exhibit Dates: October 5-November 30, 2017Opening Reception: Thursday, October 5, 5-7pm

Ellen Martin has operated a photo studio in Lexington, VA, for 20 years. Her first love remains the production of fine art black-and-white photographs using traditional or alternative processes. “The images I print have special meaning for me.” Ellen will exhibit platinum-palladium photos where chemistry has been hand-applied with a brush, making each print unique. More about Ellen Martin at: www.ellenmartinphotography.com.

Martha Olson’s work begins with recycling glossy magazine pages that she alters by crumpling, tearing, cutting, and applying a releasing agent to dissolve the ink. Each page produces a one-of-a-kind image and color palette. By combining and layering the images, colors, and movement, her creations invite the viewer to take a closer look where they will discover and experience hidden images and find personal interpretations. More about Martha Olson at: www.marthaolsonart.blogspot.com

Martha Olson will be offering a Mirror Collage Workshop in December. Check out the class schedule to learn more.

A New Outreach Partner: Childhelp’s Alice C. Tyler VillageAcross 270 acres of naturally lush, inviting land, the Childhelp Alice C. Tyler Village in Lignum, Virginia, has provided a healing home environment for abused, neglected, and at-risk children since 1993.

The story of Childhelp goes all the way back to when two young Hollywood actresses, Sara (Buckner) O’Meara and Yvonne (Lime) Fedderson, met playing the bubbly girlfriends of Ricky and David Nelson on The Adventures of Ozzie and Harriet, and a goodwill trip to Korea set them on a path impacting the lives of millions of children. Read the whole wonderful story and learn about Childhelp’s mission at: www.childhelp.org

“Abused,” “neglected,” and “at-risk” are words that should never appear in the same sentence as “child”!

On the other hand, “child,” “art,” and “grandparents” are words that work MAGIC!

& out of the blue . . .Sometimes really good things happen out of the blue!

When the folks at Mason Insurance heard that artist Lou Messa was offering a painting workshop at the Arts Center, they contacted us asking if they could sponsor an OC High School student to attend the workshop. Jamie Yurasits, the art instructor at OCHS, selected student Hensley Dwight. (Hensley’s finished painting is on the right)

A wonderful opportunity for Lou’s years of experience to be shared with a young artist!

Thank You, Mason Insurance!

Meroë Heidlebaugh Dawson: “Loved every minute of Lou Messa’s workshop! This man so generously shares his amazing talent and knowledge! Thanks again, Lou Messa!”

Pictures from a Workshopwith Artist Lou MessaLou Messa is a master painter whose works can be found in collections throughout the United States.

Lou discovered his artistic talents at an early age, growing up in the burbs of Philadelphia. “It was the late 1950s,” he recalls, “and I was one of countless artistically inclined teenage boys who honed their skills (and made a few bucks) by drawing cartoon pictures of Rat Fink.” Encouraged by his art teachers, he won a scholarship to study at the Pennsylvania Academy of Fine Arts in Philadelphia, and was soon drafted into service during the Vietnam War to be trained as an illustrator for the Army. Following his discharge, he continued for another three years as a government illustrator. Retiring with his wife to make their home in the foothills of Virginia, Lou began his career as a professional artist.

Now, Lou is giving back, offering workshops, and sharing his 40 years’ of experience as an artist, as well as some uniquely Lou insights. All of Lou’s students leave his workshops with fabulous finished landscape paintings (that look remarkably like Lou Messa originals), as well as a wealth of knowledge and techniques to combine with their own.

It is an honor to have Lou Messa in our classroom and on our walls at The Arts Center In Orange.

For the past 15 years The Arts Center’s facade has been decked in seven banners offering a fractured version of our logo. They have served us well, offering a notable Main Street landmark. But, time and the elements have taken their toll, banners have faded and torn. When they began dropping to the sidewalk, we knew it was time to replace them.

A lot has happened at The Arts Center In Orange in 15 years. We’ve grown, and we’ve learned a few things. We want to let people know how much we’ve grown and all that we have to offer, and that through our door, they will find a gallery, classes, and a gift shop. We’ve learned, what most of our neighbors on the sunny side of Main Street have learned, that the sun almost always shines on us, and that our 1911 building was designed to have awnings. Watch for our new awnings, coming this fall.

Bye-Bye, Banners& Hello, Awnings!

Dogwood Village = Art!The folks at Dogwood Village of Orange have a history of supporting the arts in Orange. They were The Arts Center’s first Outreach partner, and one only has to walk the halls of Dogwood Village Health & Rehab and Senior Living to see a gallery of work by local artists Lee Nixon, Todd Brown, Richard Young, and Ramey Campbell. This fall, visit the lower terrace at Dogwood Village Health & Rehab to see the seasons unfold in a new mural commissioned by Lee Nixon!

Teacher BiographiesCarol Barber received her BFA from James Madison University and her MFA from Radford University. She has worked as a digital illustrator, graphic designer, adjunct professor, and arts specialty teacher and has been an instructor at The Arts Center In Orange for several years. Carol also teaches through the Outreach program at the Arts Center. Her paintings have been shown through numerous group, juried, and festival shows through the years.

Jim Bosket has been making pots for over 15 years. He studied under Tom Clarkson at Piedmont Community College. His inspiration comes from a combined twist of nature and architecture influenced by a fascination for engineering as well as over 30 years’ experience designing various architectural and woodworking projects.

Kitty Dodd is a renowned animal artist. She has studied at Mary Baldwin College, Savannah College of Art and Design, and The Beartooth School of Art. Kitty has always loved animals, and was thrilled to teach adults at the National Zoo in Washington, DC. Kitty developed an art program from scratch at a private school in Virginia where she taught for 15 years. Now, she paints professionally in her “studio with a view,” mostly commissions of beloved pets with dogs and horses in particular.

James Dean Erickson attended the University of Virginia, majoring in studio art, then went on to study painting at the Pennsylvania Academy of Fine Arts, earning an MFA in 2011. He paints in his studio in Culpeper and serves as an instructor at Woodberry Forest School. Examples of his work and a link to his blog can be found at www.jamesdeanerickson.com.

Aimee Hunt received her BA from the College of the Atlantic, where she concentrated on fabric design and ceramics. For eight years, Aimee was a student at the Bemis Art School for Children. She has also studied at the Worcester Craft Center and the Corcoran School of Art. She has taught at The Arts Center In Orange for many years, previously serving as the executive director. She is currently the associate academic curator at the Fralin Museum of Art at the University of Virginia.

Shari Jacobs has been playing around with clay for two decades. As an English major dabbling in the arts, she first learned hand-building from Syd Carpenter at Swarthmore College, and then voraciously began taking classes at multiple community arts centers, including The Arts Center In Orange, before spending the last several years studying pottery with Tom Clarkson at Piedmont. She sells her work online at etsy.com/shop/TheMuddyRabbitStudio, at the Arts Center, and at local craft shows. Her national juried exhibitions in 2017 include Deep Inner Cups in Steelville, Missouri, and Battle of the Bowls in Lynchburg, Virginia.

Ed King received his MFA degree from the Pratt Institute in New York City, and also studied at Virginia Commonwealth University in Richmond. Ed has been a part of the education staff at The Arts Center In Orange for several years. You can often see his work in our gallery and gallery shop. He also shows in the Fredericksburg area and teaches at Germanna Community College.

Thomas Marsh is a classical sculptor who has created many public monuments and has works in public and private collections throughout the United States. Notable works include the crucifix and sanctuary sculptures at St. Mary Catholic Church, Fredericksburg, VA, and the Victims of Communism Memorial in Washington, DC. Thomas received a BA in painting from the Layton School of Art in Milwaukee, WI, an MFA in sculpture from California State University at Long Beach, and studied extensively in Italy.

Sally Mickley has taught Hand Building with Clay classes at The Arts Center In Orange for several years. She also taught “The Art Form of Clay” in Columbia, North Carolina, The Hermitage Foundation Museum of Norfolk, Virginia, and in her home studio, Moonshadows, in Central Virginia. Sally’s work has been exhibited, juried, and sold in many locations in the Mid-Atlantic region. Sally also teaches various workshops and classes for adults and children throughout the year.

Martha Olson has been exploring and perfecting her art process—“painting with paper”—that she discovered by a happy accident one day in her studio more than 10 years ago. All of Martha’s work is original due to this particular process and the medium she uses, altered paper. Her work has been held in collections by individuals, public institutions, and private business. Martha’s creations have been exhibited in juried national shows as well as regional and local exhibits and galleries.

Becky Parrish has worked as an artist since 1988. She has served as an assistant professor of Fine Art at Lord Fairfax Community College in Warrenton and assistant professor at Germanna Community College. She served as the director and co-owner of The William Woodward School of Fine Art in Warrenton and has taught workshops in various areas, including the Woodberry Forest School. Becky received a BFA from George Mason University and her M.F.A. in Painting from The George Washington University in 1996. She has received numerous awards as an artist and as an art instructor and has exhibited extensively.

Kimberly Radcliffe‘s passion is teaching people the arts and crafts of self-sufficiency. She leads workshops on fiber preparation, spinning and dyeing natural fibers, knitting, and other traditional handcrafts.

Kim Stocker earned her B.A. at Mount Holyoke College, where she studied bronze sculpture under Leonard DeLonga. Kim received her M.Ed. in Instructional Design and Technology at the University of Virginia. While serving as a placement counselor for the University of Pittsburgh, Kim signed up for a ceramics class and was delighted to have found her new sculptural medium.
