1. Spiritual maturity is marked by diet (I Corinthi-

ans 3:2). Paul declares that he had fed them with milk

rather than meat because of their immaturity. The

mature Christian has progressed from milk to meat.

He is informed. He knows the Word.

2. Spiritual maturity is marked by discernment

(Philippians 1:9). Mature Christians develop insight

and display wisdom.

3. Spiritual maturity is marked by deeds of duty

(Ephesians 2:10). Mature Christians are zealous of

good works. The mature Christian is a worker.

4. Spiritual maturity is marked by discipline (I Co-

rinthians 9:24-27). Spiritual maturity manifests itself

in discipline.

5. Spiritual maturity is marked by devotion (Titus

3:8, 14; Colossians 4:2 NIV). There is present in the

mature Christian the proper devotion to the Word of

God, will of God, worship of God, and work of God.

6. Spiritual maturity is marked by development (II

Peter 1:1-11). Peter reminds us that God has made

ample provisions for our spiritual development.

Where are you in your spiritual development? Are

you still feeding on milk or have you progressed to

the place you are feeding on meat?

Spiritual maturity is not reached overnight; it’s the

result of a disciplined effort. Evaluate yourself and

make a deliberate effort to develop into spiritual ma-

turity!

isting skills of the ministry members as well

tendees to endeavor to embrace their posi-

tion with a spiritual passion. Information will

be disseminated that will be of benefit to

adults and young adults as well as youth.

as well as those that would like to join or

know more about the work of the Ministry

Appreciation Service

for Fairview Assistant to the Pastor

August 1, 2010—10:00 a.m.

Today we are observing the Appreciation Ser-vice for Assistant to the Pastor, Rev. Derrick E. Wal-ter, Sr., and his family. The theme for the occasion is “A Faithful Preacher, Preaching in Season and Out of Season,” II Timothy 4:1-4. Rev. Al Walter, Pastor of New Hope Baptist Church, Chickasha, Oklahoma, and father to Rev. Derrick, will bring the message for the service. Rev. D. Walter accepted his call to the Gospel Min-istry in December 1996, was licensed by the Fairview Baptist Church on January 19, 1997, and was or-dained to the work of the Gospel Ministry by recom-mendation of Pastor Reed and order of the Fairview Baptist Church in February 2001. Rev. Derrick served as Youth Pastor at Fairview until December 2006 when he was recommended to serve as the As-sistant to the Senior Pastor. He has continued in the position, working tirelessly with and under the lead-ership and direction of Dr. Reed. He gives of him-self to the work of Christ and the church. Rev. Walter’s family, his wife, Johnneese Shree, and children, Kaubriana and Derrick Jr., work faith-fully with him at Fairview. Johnneese serves in vari-ous capacities, including church Administrative As-sistant, Minister of Music, Group Leader for the Married Study Group, Youth Ministry worker and other areas. Kaubriana and Derrick Jr. participate in many aspects of the Youth Ministry.


MEN’S MINISTRY

EMPOWERMENT

CONFERENCE

The 6th annual Men’s Ministry Empowerment Conference

was held June 4– 5, 2010, and it was a celebration of epic

proportions. A brief resume of the activities follows.

The theme for the conference this year was ―Becoming Men

of Courage, in A World of Chaos,‖ lifted out of the Old Tes-

tament book of Deuteronomy, chapter 31, verse 6.

On Friday evening, as is customary, the proceedings got

underway with our banquet/supper. Keynoting that session

with a powerful message which he titled the same as the

theme, using the same scripture text, was the dynamic young

pastor of the Northeast Missionary Baptist Church, Rev.

Michael McDaniel. Also, the Men’s Ministry Director had

invited a special guest for the evening in the person of Rev.

Dr. James H. Tucker, the venerable pastor of the Greater

New Zion Baptist Church. Pastor Tucker blessed our hearts

with a beautiful solo musical selection.

At this point, I want to thank our beloved and talented musi-

cian, Sister Arthanella Coffey, for providing the musical

support at the piano for the evening. I had to turn to her at

the last moment for her support and, as usual, she graciously

accepted my call for help. Then the food was just delicious

once more and it was prepared and served by the Culinary

Ministry, directed by Sister Willa Nero and her staff. They

are to be commended and deserve our thanks for a job well

done.

Saturday came and with it, we were lifted to greater heights.

The day was started with a lavish continental breakfast and

all of the attendees partook of that throughout the morning

and there was still some left over, which was donated to the

Prison Ministry for their usage.

Deacon Curtis Simmons, who had appeared on the Friday

night session in the same role, led us in an inspirational de-

votional session that morning. Deacon Simmons is an inspi-

ration to all of the Fairview Family for we know how God

restored him from an illness situation in which only God

could do. Deacon Simmons continues to serve the Lord with

gladness and we are thankful that God saw fit to let him re-

main among us for awhile longer. Assistant Minister of

Music Anttwain Cox was there with us on Saturday morning

and accompanied Deacon Simmons on the organ.

Originally there were three facilitators scheduled to lecture

that morning, but circumstances kept one of them from being

with us.

We were disappointed when Pastor John W. Peoples was

unable to fulfill his spot in our program, but the other two

facilitators were delighted, for it gave them more time to

lecture. And lecture they did.

From the Faith, Hope, & Love Baptist Church, beloved Pas-

tor Willard Dallas, Sr. utilized the Conference theme and

gave us a beautifully prepared lecture on, ―Adam Remained

Silent When He Should Have Spoken.‖ He used Genesis 3:6

as the text, with many other references to other portions of

the first three chapters of Genesis. Pastor Dallas is a superb

lecturer and he kept our attention as he made many humor-

ous, but serious, points throughout his portion of the session.

Then from the Antioch #1 Full Gospel Baptist Church, Rev.

Dr. Lester Cezar came to us once more to teach us that

―Spiritual Growth Is Mandatory,‖ II Peter 3:18 as the basis

for him making that assertion. I have heard Pastor Cezar on

many occasions and I have never heard him better. He

brought eight of his brethren to share with us and also some

of his tapes and CDs to also increase our knowledge of what

we can do to grow spiritually.

The Conference was well attended, and it was one of the best

ones that we have had. Again we give thanks to our be-

loved Pastor for his support in our being able to do what we

were able to do. Also I thank Pastor for having the confi-

dence in yours truly to lead the men of Fairview. I have

served as Director of the Ministry since 1998 and each year

it is more gratifying to be able to serve my Lord and Savior

Jesus Christ through this Ministry.

Shoutouts go to those men who continue to serve on the sup-

port staff, namely, Bro. Arthur Smith, Bro. James Tobler,

Bro. Larry Epps, Bro. Havered Hill, Bro. Walter Ellison,

Bro. Charles Celestine, Bro. Vincent Guydon, and Bro. Ar-

dis Franklin. This year Bro. Terry Peeler was added to the

Publicity Committee to assist Bro. Ellison and Bro. Celestine

with those duties. Again, thanks men, for a job well done.

Now we look forward with eager anticipation to the 2011, 7th

Annual Conference. We plan on seeing each of you once

again at the same place, if it’s the will of the Lord.

SINGING CHURCHMEN

MUSICAL

After a two year hiatus, the Singing Churchmen Men’s Cho-

rus resumed its Musical Concert as the culmination to the Em-

powerment Conference.

On Sunday evening, June 6, a large gathering of Fairview

Members and others from throughout the city assembled to be

a part of this occasion.

This year, Bro. Anttwain Cox Singing Churchmen Director

and the Staff of the group decided to invite selected guests to

participate with them.

Invited Guests who appeared were the Pilgrim Rest Male

Chorus, the St. James Male Chorus, and the Greater New Zion

Male Chorus. Three of the Male Chorus Groups who were

invited to attend, were not present.

After a spirited Devotional Period led once again by Deacon

Curtis Simmons and an inspirational welcome message, given

by Deacon Walter Heard, the program got underway.

The proceedings were in the capable hands of one of our new-

er member brethren in the person of Young Erick W. Harris.

He did a superb job in keeping the program moving and on

track. Thanks Bro. Erick for a job well done.

The Singing Churchmen, as was fitting, led off the program

that evening with two beautifully performed selections. The

first of the two was entitled ―Ride This Train‖ led by one of

the Associate Ministers of Fairview, Rev. Arthur R. Crawford.

Rev. Crawford has a beautiful baritone voice and he put that

voice on display for all to hear as he led the group. His zest,

zeal, and enthusiasm was transmitted to the members of the

Singing Churchmen and they matched his performance as he

led them. Very few, if any, members of the large audience

remained in their seats.

We were just getting warmed up for if Rev. Crawford’s selec-

tion was the main course, along came Deacon Billy Marshall

to provide the dessert, and take the singing aggregation and

the audience to even greater heights. Billy was a joy and a

delight to behold. He, too, has been blessed with a beautiful

tenor voice, and he caught the spirit of Rev. Crawford’s per-

formance and led the Group in a rollicking performance of

―Cooling Water From Grandma’s Well.‖ Pastor Crawford

and the group had ―RAISED THE ROOF ON THE FIRST

PERFORMANCE, BUT DEACON MARSHALL AND THE

GROUP JUST FINISHED BLOWING IT COMPLETELY

OFF. Pastor Reed and Assistant to the Pastor Derrick Walter

was directly in my view, and both were dancing, shouting

hosannas, and clapping with joy as Billy showed up and

showed out. I have to admit that Billy surprised me with his

stage mannerisms for I, nor any of the remainder of the sing-

ing group, had not seen him so animated.

Thank you, Pastor Crawford, Deacon Marshall and fellow

Singing Churchmen for a job well done. The Holy Spirit was

in that place that night and all who were present were the re-

cipients of many blessings through musical praise.

Thank you, Director Cox, for superbly preparing the Singing

Churchmen. Our Prayer is that God will continue to use you

and your many musical talents and allow you to continue to

prepare the Singing Churchmen to sing praises to God. He

used us that night to witness through musical praise and wor-

ship, telling all of His goodness through the music that we

sang.

NATIONAL BAPTIST

TRAINING CONGRESS

The 105th Annual Session of the National Baptist Con-

gress of Christian Education was held the week of

June 21-25, 2010, in Houston, Texas.

The Fairview Delegation was led by Pastor John A.

Reed, Jr., and his lovely lady, Sister Pat Fisher Reed.

Yours truly was blessed to be among those Fairview

members able to attend this session.

The theme for this year’s session was, ―Solidarity With

The Savior,” I Corinthians 3:9.

I enrolled as usual in the Laymen Division and as usual

my reporting will be from that vantage point.

I was able to share in a few events outside of the Lay-

men Division which I shall report on later in this writ-

ing.

The seminar that I enrolled in was ―Biblical Man-

hood,‖ Genesis, Chapters 2 & 3, as the text. The facili-

tator for my seminar was National Laymen President

Harold L. Simmons and Deacon Isaiah Hill. There were

approximately 45 men enrolled in this seminar. I have

taken this course 4 or 5 times and each time, I learn

something new and different. Deacon Simmons and

Deacon Hill continue to revise and update the materials

and there is always a different perspective you gain

from your participation.

One of the highlights of my week was being able to lis-

ten to one of my very favorite preachers and I make ref-

erence to Rev. H. B. Charles Jr., Pastor of the Shiloh

Metropolitan Baptist Church of Jacksonville, Florida. I

want to personally thank my beloved Pastor for my be-

ing able to be blessed by being present at this setting,

for he had called me early Tuesday morning to advise

me of Pastor Charles being on program that night and

for me to be there. Pastor Reed did not have to tell me

twice.

I was the recipient of a double blessing that night for I

got to hear the younger son of Rev. Dr. A. Louis Patter-

son preach. This was the first time that I had been

blessed to hear him preach. He is still on the staff of

Mt. Corinth Baptist Church, serving under the leader-

ship of his Father and Pastor, Rev. Dr. A. Louis Patter-

son. To say that he is a chip off the ―old block‖ is an

understatement, for that young man can ―proclaim the

gospel‖ and proclaim he did on that night. Dr. Patter-

son was a Proud Papa and had every reason to be that

way on this occasion.

I attended our Mission, Education, & Evangelism

Luncheon, which was held at the Wheeler Avenue Bap-

tist Church where Rev. Dr. Marcus D. Cosby is the Sen-

ior Pastor. Rev. Dr. Cosby was the Luncheon Speaker.

On Thursday, prior to the Luncheon, the Jr. Laymen

were in charge and I witnessed those dedicated young

men in action. The Bible Bowl was held and I marveled

at the knowledge that the 10 finalist had of the Bible

itself. I shall not forget that one of the contestants was

an 8-year-old young man and the lowest age of the re-

maining nine was 12 years old. Even though the 8 year

old was not capable of pushing the top three finishers, it

was gratifying to see him being able to make it into the

final 10 contestants.

One of the things that came out of the National session

was that President Simmons has undertaken the massive

task of finding an individual mentor for each of the

roughly four thousand (4,000) young men that were in

attendance at the session. I will say more about this in

my Men’s Ministry column, which you will find else-

where in this issue of The Fairviewan.

The overall attendance at this session of the Training

Congress was down, which was a reflection of the eco-

nomic conditions across the nation. I had a great time

during the Congress itself.

Next year the Congress will be held in Indianapolis,

Indiana. I am prayerful that not only will I be able to

attend, but some of you who have never been blessed to

attend a session will be able to do so as well.

August 1—Appreciation Services for Pastor’s Assistant

The 2nd Appreciation Service for Fairview’s Assistant to the Pastor, Rev. Derrick E. Walter, Sr., and Family, will be held on

Sunday, August 1.

August 2, Monthly Staff Meeting

The Monthly Staff Meeting will be held on Monday evening, August 2. The meeting begins at 6:00 p.m.

August 2, Music Ministry Meeting

The Music Ministry will meet at 7:00 p.m.

August 2—6, EZD Association

The East Zion District Consolidated District Association will be held August 2—6 at the Shiloh Baptist Church, Rev. O. Black,

Host Pastor. A Pre-musical will be held on Monday night. The Session will begin on Tuesday and will close with the banquet on

Friday night. The speaker for the banquet will be Dr. Julius R. Scruggs, President of the National Baptist Convention, USA, Inc.

August 4, Noonday Worship Service

We will hold our monthly Noonday Worship on Wednesday, August 4, from 12:00 noon—1:00pm. The message will be

brought by Pastor Reed. A light lunch will be available. For transportation, call the church by Tuesday, August 3.

August 7, State Youth Annual Meeting at Camp Burge

Fairview youth will be participating in the State Youth Annual Meeting at Camp Burge on August 7. Parents should contact Fair-

view youth leaders for additional information. The meeting is for boys and girls.

August 8— Fairview Annual Church Cookout We will have our Annual Church Cookout on Sunday evening, August 8, from 6—9 p.m. The cookout will be held at Fairview. All members and their families are encouraged to attend this evening of fellowship and fun. We encourage our new members to come, bring your families that the other church family members may have the opportunity to fellowship with you. Activities and games will be available for all age groups. Members are asked to bring food, enough for your family and others. Be attentive to further announcements.

August 14/16—18 — Youth Rally/Revival Scheduled Fairview's Youth Ministry will sponsor the annual Youth for Christ events Saturday—Wednesday, August 14—18. There will be a Youth Rally at the church on Saturday, August 14. The Rally will consist of various youth groups from throughout the community. Fairview’s youth revival will begin Monday, August 16, and go through Wednesday, August 18. Service will begin at 7:00 p.m. Fairview’s Youth Choir will be singing for all services. Visiting churches will be participating nightly. Please be attentive to further announcements about the revival from the Youth Ministry.

August 15 — St. John Pastor's Anniversary We will worship with the St. John Baptist Church, 5700 N. Kelley Avenue, on Sunday, August 15, 3:00 p.m., for the Anniversary Celebration of Pastor M. L. Jemison. Pastor Reed will bring the message and the JR Inspirational Choir, Usher and Nurse Ministry will accompany him.

August 21, Food Giveaway Fairview’s monthly Food Giveaway will be Saturday, August 21, from 10:00 a.m.—noon. Fairview senior members and other eligible members are encouraged to take advantage of this service.

August 22—New Covenant Pastor’s Anniversary Sunday afternoon, August 23, We are invited to share with the New Covenant Baptist Church for the Anniversary Celebration of Pastor J. O. Bradford. Service begins at 3:30 p.m. Pastor Reed will bring the message and the Adult Choir, Usher and Nurse Minis-tries will accompany him.

August 22—Adult Choir Musical Fairview’s Adult Choir will present “A Tribute to Gospel” on Sunday evening, August 29, at 6:00 p.m. The musical will include songs made famous from great Gospel greats as the late James Cleveland, Walter Hawkins, and others. Plan to be present and par-take of an evening of worship and praise in song. September 6—10 — Nat’l Baptist Convention, Kansas City The National Baptist Convention, U.S.A., Inc., will meet in Kansas City, Missouri, September 6—10. Pastor and Sister Reed and a delegation from Fairview will be attending the session. Please be in prayer for the Session and safe travels for the delegates.

Due to the time frame when I returned home from Houston at-

tending the National Training Congress, I was not able to submit

my materials for the July issue of the Fairviewan. So I am com-

ing to you once more after a month’s absence as I Greet you in

the name of Jesus. God has kept me and I have so much to be

thankful for. He is Good, not just some of the time, but all of

the time.

Right off let me get into reporting on our Jr. Laymen/Royal Am-

bassador program. The men who comprise the

Executive Committee of the arm of the Senior Lay-

men are doing a superb job of training and teaching

the young men in the way that God would have

them grow up and become.

The young men have really taken to the bible instruction that is

being given. A need has been identified to separate the boys

and young men into separate groups, so that the instruction can

not only be more effectively presented, but will have more of an

impact on the lives of the boys and young men. The lower half

age group, does not have the same ability to absorb the instruc-

tion as the upper half age group of the young men. Dividing

them into different settings can make the bible instruction more

effective for each of the age groups.

I mentioned to you that President Simmons had announced a

program at the national level of finding an individual mentor for

each of the approximately four thousand (4,000)

young men who attended the session. If any of

our Fairview Senior Laymen are interested in

serving in this capacity, please see me and I

shall get you in touch with the right persons so

that you can become involved.

Our Co–Director of the Executive Committee of Sr. Laymen,

Bro. Terry Peeler is being temporarily taken from our ranks with

an assignment on his job to Charlottesville, Virginia. Our pray-

ers go with him and his on hands leadership will be sorely

missed, but I am confident that the machine will continue to

operate smoothly for the men who serve with him are committed

to the task at hand and will continue to fulfill their duties.

Bros. Tobler and Ellison are heading up a camping outing for all

young men who desire to participate on Fri-

day night July 30 and Saturday July 31.

Hopefully there will be large numbers of

young men participating. Last year the

young men were taken to Red Rocks Can-

yon State Park. I experienced a portion of

that outing and everyone had a great time. I will be participating

with the men and young men again in this one as well. Bros

Tobler and I, will be reporting on this activity in the September

issue of our Fairviewan.

Once again we cordially invite all men to participate with us in

our monthly meetings which are held each second

Wednesday of the month at 6 PM in the Fellowship

Hall. We would welcome your presence and we

have a place reserved JUST FOR YOU. Please join

us as we fellowship and study God’s word.

Also we remind you of our Singing Churchmen group Men’s

Chorus Schedule. We will be getting back on track soon with

our rehearsals and our scheduled singing assign-

ment/s in the morning worship services. We are

scheduled to sing in the 10 AM worship service

each 4th Sunday and we sing also when a the month

contains a 5th Sunday. Our rehearsal times are each

2nd Tuesday at 7 PM and each 3rd Monday at 7 PM

in the Sanctuary. We have room for you, and the only qualifica-

tion is that you can MAKE A JOYFUL NOISE UNTO THE

LORD and attend the rehearsals.

We continue to pray for our Brethren who are plagued with ill-

ness. Bro. Ron House, Bro Robert Jackson, Bro Luvell Spratt,

Bro Willard Jones, Bro. Roy Nelson, Bro. Robert

Grinstead and others whom we have not listed.

We also offer prayers for those Brethren who have

fallen by the wayside for what ever reason. Our

prayer is that the Holy Spirit will assist them in

finding their way back to the foot of the cross. All

of us are subject to become lost during our Chris-

tian walk, but God does not leave us. WE LEAVE HIM AND

WE CAN FIND HIM EXACTLY WHERE WE LEFT HIM.

HE WILL BE THERE PATIENTLY WAITING ON US WITH

HIS ARMS EXTENDED TO WELCOME HOME. I want to

thank each of you who have prayed for me as I have undergone

eye surgery to my left eye. The post op recovery process is go-

ing very well and I am scheduled for surgery on my right eye on

Monday August 9. Pray that God will stay the hand of my doc-

tor as he performs the upcoming surgery.

Time to put away the old ―mouse‖ for this time. There was

much to say and I am relieved that I have finished the writing

for this month. I pray that I have said some things that will be a

blessing to you in your life and will compel you to increase your

commitment to God as you travel down your spiritual road.

I will be attending Our Annual Session in Kansas City, Missouri

which will convene the week of September 6-10. I will be mak-

ing a report on that trip in the October issue of the Fairviewan.
