The highlight of the day was a demonstraon by Iowa State University Beef Center's Marshall Ruble on teaching a calf to lead in 30 minutes or less! Youth also learned about "When to call your Vet" from Dr. Dan Berkland, Sibley Vet Clinic, "Cale Care and Comfort" by Gary Eckelberg, Ralco Nutrion, "Beefing Up Mealme" with ISUEO Nutrion and Health Specialist Holly Van Heel, and "Show Me the MOO-La" with 4-H Youth Development Specialist Lisa Berkland, Ashley Madsen, Kossuth County 4-H Outreach Educator and Beth Doran, ISUEO Beef Specialist. Addional sponsors for the day include: Farm Credit Services, Pro Cooperave, Palo Alto County Farm Bureau, EPS, Kerber Milling, Emmet County Calemen, Spencer Ag Center, Bruce & Lori Cresansen, Clay County 4-H Beef Commiee, Aden Trucking, Inc., Wenell Insurance, Bank Midwest, Animal Medical Center, Kossuth Farm Bureau, Kossuth County Calemen, Clay County Farm Bureau, Ron Smith, Palo Alto County Calemen, and Bomgaars. On Saturday, January 18 about 70 Northwest Iowa 4-H and FFA youth participated in the first ever Northwest Iowa Beef Bonanza at Iowa Lakes Community College on the Emmetsburg Campus. Clover Kids — Algona

Poultry Assistance

CLOVER KIDS LEADER NEEDED FOR ALGONA! We are currently looking for an energetic volunteer to donate their time to be the Clover Kids leader

for the Algona area. Algona Clover Kids is for students in grades 2nd and 3rd. Currently the Algona

group meets during the month of February on Saturday’s from 9 a.m. until 11 a.m. here at the

Extension office.

If you are interested in filling this role, please contact the Extension office ASAP!

Babysitting Clinic February 26th and March 12th from 2-5 p.m. (Snacks will be provided)

Algona Public Library (Room D)

Pre-registration is required. Register at the Kossuth County Extension office by February 13th.

Please send Name, Grade, Phone, Email & $5.00 to the Extension Office.

Fee: $5.00

Class size is limited to 20 participants.

Participants must be in 5th grade or older to participate.

Dr. Zachary Westhoff, LeMars Vet Clinic Dr. Zachary Westhoff raises and shows show quality poultry. He

currently has chicks available for 4-Her’s to purchase. Dr. Westhoff will

also answer any questions pertaining to showing and raising poultry.

2014 American Youth Horse Council

Scholarships available:

2014 American Youth Horse Council Symposium March 21-23, 2014 Minneapolis, Minnesota

Do you love horses? Do you want to learn more about them and get

better both in the saddle and out? The American Youth Horse Council

offers a conference each year that moves around the United Sates. The

next conference is coming as close to us as it ever gets! Make plans to

attend now! They are even planning a demonstration with Icelandic

Horses!!

They will also feature many nationally and internationally respected

teachers and clinicians from across the Unite States.

Cattlemen Scholarship

The Kossuth Co. Cattlemen are offering a $500 scholarship to graduating seniors. The applicant must be a resident of Kossuth County, but may attend a high school out of the county. The applicant must also be enrolling in an ag-related field (very broad field) in college. Contact your school or the Extension Office for an application, which must be postmarked on or before March 3.

Veterinary Medicine 4-H Scholarships

The Lloyd, Inc. and Mahr Family 4-H Scholarships are open to former Iowa 4-H members who have been accepted to the ISU College of Veterinary Medicine..

All 2014 Veterinary Medicine 4-H Scholarships application materials must be submitted

Iowa 4-H Youth Conference June 24-26

Attention all 4-Her’s, grades 8-12! Come and experience the Iowa 4-H Conference held at ISU in Ames. You will be able to attend workshops and participate in community service or attend CSI- Crops, Shooting Sports or animal science round-up and choose various animals such as sheep, beef, dairy, horse or swine to study. Have fun in the evenings going to a formal banquet at Hilton Coliseum, dances, swimming, and a picnic. During the 3 day conference, experience dorm life and make new friends from across the state. If you have friends you would like to invite, 4-H enrollment not required – bring them along! Contact the office for more information. If you interview on March 23, we will pay half your fee

to attend.

We would like to welcome all new members and

their parents to the 4-H program. We have infor-

mation about the 4-H program and using 4-H online. This online

computer program will be your guide to enrollment, project signup and

livestock identification for the fair and all livestock shows. New

member handbooks will be available. Call the Extension Office to

set up a time to let us introduce you to 4-H.
