Shannon Lyon is a Canadian musician and singer-songwriter. Born in Uxbridge, Ontario, Canada, Lyon began his musical career in Kitchener, Ontario in the early 90’s forming his first band Strange Days.

“When I hear Shannon, I hear the rhythms of the Midnight Cowboy, the harmonies of an earth-bound angel, the acoustic guitar that knows the pain of a heart, the steel guitar that stirs the lonely and restless lovers. But most of all I hear the voice that echoes Earle, Farrar and Buckner, a voice that haunts you like a heavy fog on a bar-ren field on a cool October morning.” (Says Bob Egan -Blue Rodeo, Wilco)http://www.shannonlyonmusic.com

Two for the road

Pair of Aces — Nelson Hydro Operations Manager Mike Amos and Chief Building Inspector Bernie Zimmer have hung up their well-worn hats after long careers spent serving the City of Nelson and its residents. By Rory CaseLast Thursday night, more than

30 women came together to celebrate Joanne Siderius’ 60th birthday in the form of a hockey game! Titled the “Siderius Cup,” women of all of levels came out to celebrate Jo, and

to celebrate hockey. Some of these women have

played with Jo for over twenty years, with the Nelson Blueliners. Others, like myself have only had the pleasure of playing with Jo for a couple seasons.

It was a fun and fast hockey game with many jokes, laughter, and remincing of memories. Thoroughly joyful for everyone! Thank you to Jo for bringing us together for an unforgettable game. I will definitely be playing hockey on my 60th birthday.

Nelson City Police news: dogs, open liquor, and fightingOn Thursday, April 3 the Nelson

Bylaw Department attempted to iden-tify a male contravening the Bylaw regarding dogs in the downtown core. The male refused to identify himself to the officer and walked away. NPD members were called and located him. The male was detained for obstructing a Peace Officer and was identified. He was allowed to proceed with a warning that failing to provide his identification to a Peace Officer is a criminal offence. He did receive a ticket under the Bylaw for having dogs in a restricted zone.

On Thursday, April 3 at 3:30 p.m. an abandon car was reported in the Rosemont area. NPD members discovered the vehicle had recently been reported stolen, and that the inte-

rior had been set on fire. The investi-gation is ongoing. If anyone noted any suspicious behavior or activity in the 400 Block Beasley St area over that last several days please contact the NPD at 354-3919.

On Saturday, April 5 at 2:10 a.m. NPD members noted a young female walking in the 400 Block Stanley St with open Liquor. After detaining the young lady and obtain-ing her name the member felt things were not adding up. He and other members questioned her identity while searching police systems. It was soon discovered that the female has been misleading and was arrested for obstructing a Police Officer, as well as multiple liquor offences. She was released and faces significant fines

under Liquor Control and Licensing Act. The arresting officer spent some time with her and explained the con-sequences of attempting to obstruct a Police Officer in the course of his duties.

On Sunday, April 6 at 2 a.m. a fight broke out in the 700 block Vernon St between two females. As one male tried to become involved another took offence and assaulted him. Staff at the nearby Pub called 911 and NPD attended. One male had a swollen and cut face, all other par-ties had left. The offender was known to witnesses and the investigation is ongoing.

It’s payday and you can’t wait to blow that

paycheck, but should you? No, no you shouldn’t. I am however required to fill at two hundred-word quota so I’ll go into more detail if that little bit in the beginning wasn’t quite motivating enough.

The only instance where I would see blow-ing your paycheck as a positive would be on a necessity such as paying the rent or the electric bill. I will admit to occa-sionally splurging a pay-check on something such as a game console or a

laptop but outside of the very occasional splurge I really don’t recommend it. Putting a portion of it, say 30% of it into savings will do you good in the long run. That is to say if you can actually afford it. If you are in a living pay-check-to-paycheck situa-tion, well there isn’t much you can do but save what you can.

Prioritize your spend-ing. Cover the expenses, put a chunk of your wages into savings then feel free to splurge how you see fit. Money CAN give you happiness; you just need to be wise with it.

Parking Meters are not HeritageParking meters in

the City of Nelson are both an enhancement to businesses, as well as

a detriment. Part of the reason for having parking meters is as a financial resource for the city bank accounts. Another reason is for parking meters is to discourage parking-spot “hoarders.”

The issue of parking spot hoarding can be resolved by our bylaw officers actively chalking tires vehicles, without the need for parking meters. We can still have

a one or two hour limit on spots this way.

Parking meters are not only revenue generators, but also have costs too. The elimination of parking meters would also eliminate the need to count the money they produce and the bureaucracy that comes with dealing with the parking meters.

People are always going to complain about there not being enough parking spots in Nelson, but really what they’re complaining about is not being able to park in

front of the store they want to shop in. We do have an existing parkade that is underutilized much of the year. There is also sufficient parking a couple blocks away.

If we do continue with having parking meters, we should designate the money generated towards more encouragement of non-polluting vehicle transportation, such as bikes and walkways. We should be looking at other communities with successful downtowns that do not have parking meters and see how they do. If they can, we can too!

Do you agree? Parking meters should be eliminated from downtown Nelson

SurveyLast week’s survey response:

Comments:

Do you agree? Nelson’s waterfront walkway should be paved.

YeS, but not necessarily pavement…it could be same as the Lakeside walkway, which has mostly held up pretty good.

MuSt be wheel chair accessible.

PlaiN black paving or heritage look with coblestone brick? Ballpark costs?

it doesn’t need to be paved. It is nice to walk on natural ground rather than pavement all the time. Rocks can be taken out of spots that are rough for mobility scooters.

NelSoN dog lovers will have no place to take their dogs for a dump.

WHile pavement is one option, other treatments should be considered such as crushed/compacted gravel, or even concrete.

a gravel path similar to the John’s Walk section of the pathway would be best. It’s a hard enough surface for stroll-ers & walkers, and easier on the joints than a paved “side-walk”. In addition, the wider gravel surface avoids having users step down off a nar-row sidewalk & sprain their ankles or fall. We have enough cement sidewalks: flat gravel pathways are safer & usable by all!

it’S a pathway, not a walk-way. Walkway implies that

arrogant pedestrians can walk four abreast and hiss at pass-ing cyclists with righteous indignation (speaking from experience).

Pave paradise, put up a walkway? Is paving more environmentally friendly than the current surface? If not, then keep as is.

No....BeCauSe if people like to jog along it, I think it would be easier on their bodies, (knees, ankles, hips) to NOT have to run on pave-ment.

aN accessible walkway should be a priority and per-haps part of an age-friendly and/or handicapped-friendly initiative that would be eli-gible for special funding. Most importantly, it should be acces-sible year round. Last winter, we tried to walk on the path in Lakeside Park and it was just treacherous - not plowed or sanded at all. This is just not acceptable. The City of Nelson needs to do a better job of looking out for the health and safety of its citizens!

Would be lovely to have old fashioned-style lantern lighting, as they do in Dahab, Egypt. Their waterfront walk-way is also wide and paved with stone (some decorative-ly), and accessible for those with mobility issues. The lan-terns often provide a photo op,

and are non-intrusive to the starlit view of the sky.

it should also be kept plowed and sanded in the win-ter.

i like to be able to run on the dirt, easier on the knees

FoR Wheel chairs, stroll-ers, rollerblading!!!!!! How can we take this beyond a survey?

i walk there every day and have done for 20 years - if I want to walk on pavement, I could walk on any street in Nelson.

Re the park portion of the walkway - for people like me who have difficulty walking, paved concrete would be much harder to walk on. Best would be wood chips. What we have right now - please take care of the potholes!

GRavel embedded in the ground (as it is on the existing section of John’s Walk) drains better, and also provides safer footing with no pavement edges to slip off of in winter.

i enjoy walking on compact dirt and gravel... pavement is so damn hard on the legs. We have enough of pavement. Let the earth breathe... it has enough pavement on it.

it would help keep the weeds from overtaking the path...further narrowing it.

PaviNG would require tons of upkeep and wouldn’t be the best aesthetically. Keeping it looking nice with crushed rock and landscaped would be best.

No need for more cement...but please plow the path in winter.

PaveMeNt is not good for pets. The entire walkway should be lit.

altHouGH I agree that the path way should be acces-sible for all I personally don’t want to be walking on pave-ment. Also, pavement invites much more bike traffic which makes it unpleasant for those wanting a relaxing leisurely stroll. If paved I think we need a separate bike lane for sure. Maybe there could be sections paved (in the more populated areas like in front of the beach and soccer fields, and leave some sections unpaved and for walking only?

aBSolutelY! Think of Vancouver’s or Nanaimo’s waterfront walkways, allows for multiple uses including roller blading. Cyclists and bladers on one side, walkers on the other... works great there!

tHe walkway will become a drawing feature for locals and visitors to Nelson. It needs to be done correctly.
