Thinking/Review Questions 1) Where do enzymes made in the pancreas come in contact with food? 2) What do you think would happen if you did not have a gall bladder? 3) We learned the surface area of the small intestine is very important in digestion. Increasing the surface area of the FOOD by chewing is just as important. Tell me why. 4) An airplane helps you get to a place faster than driving : Digestive enzymes help you _______________________________. 5) Cows have 4 chambered stomachs. Try to guess the reason they need so many stomach chambers.

Student Questions1) Why does the inside of the stomach look like a brain?

Student Questions1) Why does the inside of the stomach look like a brain?

The folds in the stomach are called rugae. They allow the stomach to expand greatly. When you eat a lot, the rugae will slowly smooth out as they accommodate the growing stomach.

Student Questions2) Is glucose a monosaccharide?

The liver stores sugar as GLYCOGEN. Glycogen is a polysaccharide, which just means it is one big block of many sugars. When the body needs sugar, the liver breaks glycogen and send out glucose. Glucose is a monosaccharide.

Phone ResearchYahoo answer = 50/50 very badWikipedia = better, still not 100% perfect (it is written by normal people, not scientists or researchers)

If you want to find VERY good sources of information, try scrolling down in your searches and looking for universities or medical research. Sometimes you can spot them by seeing a ".edu" These will almost always be correct. Example.... "function of bile".....

What Does Excretory Mean?

Excrete means to push waste out of the body.

The excretory system helps the body get waste and toxins out.

Page 10: The excretory system1

Why Do We Have Toxins in Our Bodies?

There are 2 types of toxins:

1) Exogenous Toxins - chemicals that are made OUTSIDE your body, and then you ingest them. 2) Endogenous Toxins - harmful chemicals that are made INSIDE your body.

So, you can eat, drink or inhale toxins. ALSO, your healthy body makes toxins naturally!

Many of your healthy organs produce byproducts that are harmful (toxic) to your body! Your excretory system gets these toxins OUT of your body!

Page 12: The excretory system1

Sources of Exogenous Toxins

A few examples....

1) Processed foods!2) Pollution (traffic, factories)3) Deodorant (contain aluminum)4) Artificial sweetener

Sources of Endogenous Toxins

An example.....

When we digest protein, ammonia is produced. Ammonia is toxic to humans! So our body must excrete the ammonia.
