Inially described as a cytoplasmic structure, then as the source of energy, later an organismal enty, and recently a component of many diseases, the mul-faceted mitochondrion has engendered fascinaon from a broad spectrum of physical, chemical, biological, and medical perspecves. What is this cell-within-a-cell? Where did it come from? What is its relevance to our health and well being? How will mitochondrial knowledge affect the future? These are the quesons we hope to discuss in this smulang meeng of modern mitochondriacs who will discuss the past and current status and future prospects of the field through their important contribuons.
