The world’s greatestorchestra of teenagersinvites you and your familyto a concert that revels inthe glorious variety ofsounds and moods thatcan only conjured by ahuge symphonyorchestra.

Starting with the fire and fury ofMussorgsky’s depiction of a witches’ Sabbath in ‘A Night on theBare Mountain’ (included in the BBC’s Ten Pieces) startlinglyorchestrated by his friend and fellow Russian composer Rimsky-Korsakov, and ending with Debussy’s gorgeous sonic seascape ‘LaMer’, they will also perform Ligeti’s eerie study in extreme quiet‘Lontano’. George Benjamin conducts his own ‘Dance Figures’ andTamara Stefanovich performs Ravel’s astonishingly virtuosic PianoConcerto for the Left Hand.

With pre-concert events presented by local school pupils as part ofNYO’s Young Promoter scheme, and introductions to the music byNYO musicians, this is a concert for all the family to enjoy together.

Totally teenage orchestral brilliance – come and hear it!

It’s just £5 for under 25s thanks to support from Classic FM.

The Department of Education will be carrying out tests to checkwhether eight and nine-year-olds know their times tables. Thiswas trialled in some primary schools in England during March2018 before being rolled out nationally. This will becomemandatory in 2020 for all year 4 students. The Guardian February 2018

Mr NK (Clifford Harding) founder of the Tunes Times TablesProgramme learnt his times tables at the age of 29 after beingchallenged by a pupil on an 8 times tables question. At the time MrNK was a school mentor and felt embarrassed that he was unable toanswer the question. He returned home to ask his son this samequestion and he was unable to answer the question too. Mr NK feltsurely, he could find a method to learn the times table in a quick andeasy way injecting FUN and EXCITEMENT into the learning process…… Tunes Times Tables was created and has been thriving since 2008.

The Programme can be accessed through Group Workshops, SchoolWorkshops, One to One Sessions, or a learning album available onCD and Digital Download

Children's reading can 'dip' during thesummer holidays if they don't have regularaccess to books and encouragement to readfor pleasure.

The annual Summer Reading Challenge helpsget three quarters of a million children intolibraries each year to maintain their reading skillsand confidence. 2018 will be the 20th challenge. It’s open primary school children of every ability.

This year the challenge will focus on the themeof mischief and pranks, as inspired by the much-loved Beano comic, which celebrates its 80th

anniversary next year.

Children are challenged to read at least sixlibrary books over the school holidays andcollect incentives, such as stickers, to earn theirfinal challenge certificate and medal.

Children can choose, recommend and reviewbooks at the Book Sorter on the Challengewebsite. This is the largest database of children’speer to peer reading recommendations.

What is Home-Start?Home-Start is a nationalcharity with schemes inhundreds of localcommunities. Theyrecruit and trainvolunteers to help familieswith young children.Their volunteers, whoknow about being aparent, support otherparents by visiting them intheir own homes for a couple of hours each week. They also runspecial family groups and hold social events for families.

What kind of families could I be helping? All kinds of families can find it hard to cope for all sorts of reasons, maybe because of illness or disability of a child or because of post-natal illness, bereavement or loneliness. Home-Start supports any parent with young children who asks forhelp. They come from all walks of life.

Can my support and friendship really make a difference? The early years before children go off to school are vital in a child’slife, and parents have a key role in creating security for their child.Sometimes they need a little help doing this. Your help.

As a volunteer what would I actually do?Usually, you visit a family in their own home once a week for a coupleof hours. You may find the parents simply need someone to talk to, orthey may need more practical support such as cooking, reading to thechildren, going to the park, or finding out about local services.

Do I need any qualifications to be a volunteer? The only real ‘qualification’ is experience of bringing up children.Friendliness and a caring attitude are essential as well as anunderstanding of the pressures of parenting.

Do volunteers get any training?Yes, Home-Start give high priority to the recruitment, induction, training and support of all their volunteers. You will be supportedduring your training throughout your contact with families. Home-Start’s highly rated Preparation Course is also accredited by the OpenCollege Network.

What would I get out of volunteering for Home-Start?Knowing you have helped; a boost to your self-esteem andconfidence; maybe even a foot on the ladder towards a job.

5 things to do with yourunder-5s this summer

A study funded by the Department ofEducation has found that the provision ofearly education to children aged 2 has asignificant positive effect on theirlanguage and socio-emotionaldevelopment when they reach age 3. Thisis regardless of their family’s level ofsocial or economic advantage.

The report found that no matter how rich and how highthe quality of a child’s home environment is or if earlychildcare is provided by relatives, friends or non-Ofstedregistered carers, it was more beneficial for a 2 year old’sdevelopment to have spent time in early education andcare in a group-based setting, such as a nursery orplaygroup, or with a registered childminder.

Interestingly, the report found that increased time spentwith registered childminders at age 2 is associated withpositive outcomes in terms of verbal development forchildren at age 3. Also, spending time in group settings isassociated with a similar level of benefit for social andbehavioural outcomes.

The Study of Early Education and Development (SEED) isfollowing the progress of almost 6,000 children acrossEngland from ages 2 to 7. The study investigates childdevelopment using a range of criterion including: CognitiveDevelopment (e.g. verbal and non-verbal ability); andSocio-Emotional Development (e.g. prosocial behaviour, behavioural self-regulation and cooperation).

Preparing your child for school

If your child is starting school in September, you may be wondering how best to preparethem for this big new adventure! Firstly, don’t worry if they can’t read a word or write their own name. The ability to interact, communicate and exercise a degree ofindependence is actually far more important than reading or writingskills when a child starts school. In fact, research shows a link betweenstrong personal, social and emotional skills in Reception and higherlevels of attainment in the future. So if you want to strengthen yourchild’s skills in these areas, here are some tips:

Independence

The aim is for children to be responsible for themselves, theirbelongings and their actions at school. Help your child learn to getdressed, put on their coats/shoes, go to the toilet, tidy away toys andselect their own activity resources.

Communication and language

Research demonstrates that competent speakers develop intocompetent readers and writers; without competent spoken language, learning to read and write is more difficult. Language allows childrento interact with the world. Being able to communicate their messageeffectively is satisfying and develops their esteem and self-confidence.Model good spoken language, with correct pronunciation of sounds, and encourage your child to speak in full sentences using anexpanding vocabulary.

Sharing and interaction

The more opportunities your child gets to interact and learn how toshare and take turns, the less of a shock it will be when he or she startsschool. However, expect this to be an on-going process. Allow yourchild lots of opportunities to play with siblings and organise lots ofplay dates to practice these skills.

Respect for behavioural boundaries

At school, behavioural expectations and boundaries are likely toinclude: Listening the first time they are asked to pay attention;keeping hands/feet to themselves; sharing and taking turns; lookingafter things; tidying away; being kind to others. You can reinforcethese expectations at home.

Physical (gross and fine motor skills)

All activities require some sort of physicality, whether it be large (gross)or small (fine) movements. Gross motor skills are developed whenhopping, skipping, running, jumping, galloping, balancing, pedalling abike, using a scooter, climbing, throwing, catching, and kicking a ball.

Varying the speed anddirection of movementactivities also developsspatial awareness. Yourchild can have fundeveloping fine motorskills at home with everyday activities such asusing pegs and scissors, bead threading, buttonfastening, mouldingplay-dough, andpainting.

Exploring andinvestigating

Often the most effective learning occurs when a child is left to hisown devices, without nicely-prepared resources and prescriptiveinstructions about how to do something. Present your child with alarge cardboard box (and the opportunity to access otherresources/toys). See what he or she does with it.

All the above skills can be naturally weaved into your everyday lives.Enjoy and treasure these precious last few weeks/months with yourchild at home, and keep the above tips in mind to promote a positivestart to your child’s school life.

The summer holidays are a great time for familiesto spend time together. However, it can also be atime when children forget some of the skills theyhave mastered at school. Here are someideas from Charlotte Gater, Head ofCurriculum at Explore Learning, on how toseize the summer.

Start a blogGive your child a little note book to jots ideas downwhilst you are out and about, then write up whatyou’ve done. Take lots of pictures as these are a great toolto help children who find writing tricky. Encourage them todescribe what is happening in the picture to get theircreativity flowing.

Send a postcardLet your friends and family know what you’ve been up to.They’re only short so are a wonderful way to get a bit ofwriting going during the holidays. If your child is reluctant towrite, then why not try a postcard app like ‘By Post’?

Read, read and read some morePop a book in your bag so you can use this when travellingon days out. Explore will be uploading weekly activities thatyou can complete with your child to help keep themengaged with what they are reading. Visitexplorelearning.co.uk/summer to find out more.

How to seize the summer with Explore Learning

Play some games These are great for so many reasons, from developing language toimproving memory skills. Need some new games? Have a scavengerhunt in local charity shops to see who in the family can find the bestgame.

TuitionTo keep your children progressing over the summer, a tuition centreis a great option. Prevent the battle ground of getting children to dowork at home and get them along to a tuition centre where there arelots of other children getting involved.

Explore Learning offers free taster sessions, so get in touch today by calling 033 0124 3802.

Education

Helping your childavoid the languageword gapAn Oxford University Press (OUP) reportpublished in April revealed that both primaryand secondary schools teachers are seeing anincreasing number of children with a limitedvocabulary – a word gap.

Why the Word Gap Matters: Oxford Language Report found thatwithout enough words a child will not only find it difficult tounderstand instructions at school, but also to play andcommunicate with others. Over 1,300 teachers surveyed reportedthat the word gap is not only affecting children’s achievements atschool but also that it can have a damaging impact on self-esteemand a child’s ability to make friends.

In the report, OUP asked leading educational experts and teachersto offer their thoughts on the word gap and to share practicalideas on building children’s vocabulary and sparking their interestin learning new words. Here are just a few:

Sharing the reading experience

In the OUP survey, 93% of primary school teachers said that a rootcause of the word gap is that children aren’t spending enoughtime reading for pleasure. Reading is an important way for childrento learn vocabulary as they are more likely to come across newwords in books than they will in spoken language. Encourage yourchild by reading aloud and sharing picture books, traditional tales,or non-fiction books when they are young. Help them read aswidely as possible as they develop their own reading skills. If youare looking for inspiration, you can find booklists for all ages/interests at www.oxfordowl.co.uk/for-home.

Talk, talk, talk!

It goes without saying that parents talk to their children all thetime. But research with very young children shows that if we usericher language, a child’s vocabulary can increase dramatically .Name and describe objects rather than falling back on pronouns(like ‘this’ and ‘that’). Try using alternative words for the same thing– instead of saying ‘It’s hot’, say ‘It’s scorching’ or ‘It’s blistering.’

Have fun with words

Create an excitement around discovering and talking about newwords together. Tell your child that it’s fine not to know what aword means – we are all learning new words all the time.

When your child comes across a new word in a book encouragethem to talk to you about what the word might mean. Encouragethem to use the other words and sentences around it to try towork out the meaning. In the report, Why Closing the Word GapMatters, teacher Janine Wooldridge suggests that older childrenreading on their own could be encouraged to write unknownwords on a card bookmark for you to discuss and look up in adictionary together later. Talk about other ways you could use thenew word – give them some examples of sentences using thatword and encourage them to think of their own sentences.

You can find fun word activities and language games atwww.oxfordowl.co.uk/for-home.

Pick up the dictionary

It’s helpful if your child has access to adictionary and a thesaurus at the right levelfor them, written in language they canunderstand. A dictionary and thesaurus athome and at school are vital tools fordeveloping and enriching children’slanguage and helping to improvetheir spelling. To choose the bestdictionary or thesaurus for yourchild and help them with basicdictionary skills, you can visit thedictionary selector atwww.oxfordowl.co.uk/home/reading-owl/expert-help/choosing-dictionaries

Check for understanding

In the OUP report, educational psychologist Jean Gross (CBE)explains that she assessed children of all ages and abilities using atest that asked them to say what “on purpose” meant. Very fewcould do this, despite often hearing “You did that on purpose” athome and at school. Jean suggests that we should never assumethat children know the meaning of even simple words. Make sureyou check for understanding.

A day out at Hampton CourtThis summer, how about traveling a little further afield fora day visit to Hampton Court Palace to meet some of thebiggest characters in English history. The staff are friendlyand informative throughout. At every turn there arefascinating facts to learn about how the Tudors, Stuartsand the Hanoverians lived, ate, fell in love, worked, dressed, had fun, and how their lives ended. When wevisited we were absorbed by the stories told via the freeaudio guide (child-friendly versions available), andengrossed in the art, décor, furniture and architecture ofthe day. The maze was a huge winner with our kids at theend! At 2 hours’ drive from Birmingham, it makes aworthwhile visit manageable in a day.
