I’m sure that all of us can identify with pain like this, whether it is physical, emotional, or spiritual pain—the kind of pain that prevents you from doing what you want, living the kind of life that you want. I've had this disability for about twenty years now. Over the years I've learned ways to cope with it, and ways to not tempt the fates. But, by and large, things are out of my hands, out of my control. I had all kinds of plans for how this day would go, but my herniated disks and impinged nerves had other ideas. And, so, I have no choice but to wait patiently for this to pass. Patience is a spiritual discipline, and possibly the most onerous one to develop. But, it is in patience that we meet God. The Bible is full of these moments: Noah waiting for the flood to subside, the Israelites wait- ing for the Promised Land, the Jews waiting in exile, the people waiting for the Messiah, and Jesus waiting and fasting in the desert, just to name a few. In each case, they longed for a cessation of their discomfort--their pain, their anxiety, their alienation, their hunger. But, most of all, they were tempted by a need to control things, a need to exert their power over the situation. And, yet, things were very much out of their control. The only thing they could control was themselves. Only when, like Elijah in the wilderness, they were able to shift their fo- cus from their own discomfort, to ignore the fires of their anger and hun- ger, to not fixate on the tectonic shifts in their lives, to discount the whirl- wind of their thoughts were they able to hear that still, small voice of God reaching out to them. That is the moment that each of them encountered God. (Continued on next page) August 2021

FROM THE RECTOR

As I write this, I'm lying flat on my back, muscle spasms and jolts of pain moving through me. I’m sure that all of us can identify with pain

like this, whether it is physical, emotional, or spiritual pain—the kind of

pain that prevents you from doing what you want, living the kind of life

that you want. I've had this disability for about twenty years now. Over the years I've learned ways to cope with it, and ways to not tempt the

fates. But, by and large, things are out of my hands, out of my control. I

had all kinds of plans for how this day would go, but my herniated disks

and impinged nerves had other ideas. And, so, I have no choice but to

wait patiently for this to pass.

Patience is a spiritual discipline, and possibly the most onerous one to

develop. But, it is in patience that we meet God. The Bible is full of

these moments: Noah waiting for the flood to subside, the Israelites wait-ing for the Promised Land, the Jews waiting in exile, the people waiting

for the Messiah, and Jesus waiting and fasting in the desert, just to name

a few. In each case, they longed for a cessation of their discomfort--their

pain, their anxiety, their alienation, their hunger. But, most of all, they were tempted by a need to control things, a need to exert their power over

the situation. And, yet, things were very much out of their control. The

only thing they could control was themselves.

Only when, like Elijah in the wilderness, they were able to shift their fo-cus from their own discomfort, to ignore the fires of their anger and hun-ger, to not fixate on the tectonic shifts in their lives, to discount the whirl-wind of their thoughts were they able to hear that still, small voice of God reaching out to them. That is the moment that each of them encountered God.

We find ourselves having to be patient now. The Body of Christ is in pain, spasms wracking it, frustration and anxiety threatening to scatter its focus. As the hospitals once again fill up, and viru-lent strains run rampant, and we once more don our masks, it can all feel very much out of con-trol. But, what is in our control is how we respond to this. And we respond by giving control over to God. In every case in our Holy Scriptures, this is the very moment when people encounter God. And, so, we too can wait with joyful, abiding hope as we wait patiently to meet our God in this holy place.

Waiting by your side, Brandon+

For Our Youth!!! Page 4

Happy August! School is starting, and what a difference a year makes! Many are going back to school after a year home, many are back to normal. Stay safe and study hard! Use those big beautiful brains! Even as some things are returning to normal, the fight against COVID is not over. To that end we still are paying close attention to CDC guidelines as we make moves to open our church for worship, education, and fellowship. We still don’t know exactly how Sunday school will look or what events we will be able to offer our youth, but please know we are doing all we can to enrich their faith and friendship. As of now we are aiming for outdoor study in the ga-zebo. We will know more as committees meet and Diocesan guidelines are presented and we will keep you informed! Now to hear about the good fun! We got to take a trip to the movies! We rented out an entire theater and saw Back to the Future, and it was great! Way too much popcorn and candy and Icee and soda, but a good time was had by all! Then we had a pool party, where we ate pizza and swam and played games and did ice breakers and made new friends. We hope to keep this sort of fun going, but as I said, we will plan on the fly for maximum fun, and with as much notice as possible. Good luck to everyone starting new schools and new grades, and don’t forget to bring your backpacks to be blessed on Sunday, August 8th!

Back to the Future at the movies! Pool Party!

It’s that time of year when summer draws to a close, school starts, and we all begin setting new courses for the rest of the year. We hope you’ll consider making music with us at ECOHS part of your plan! We’ve got opportunities for both the young and the young-at-heat to sing in choirs, ring hand-bells, and explore new, unique, and unconventional ways of making music (no previous experi-ence required).

Please be on the look out for a separate email in the next day or two with a special link T that will get you connected with information and provide you with sign up opportunities. I look forward to singing, ringing, and exploring new and fun musical horizons with you! Tom Elston Interim Director Of Music

MASKS NOW REQUIRED AT ALL SERVICES: Based on the new CDC guidelines, we will be required to wear masks while indoors re-gardless of vaccine status. Thank you for your patience, understanding and Christian com-passion during this challenging time.

LEMONADE ON THE PORCH! It’s way too hot for coffee, but starting next Sunday, August 8th, we will have Lemonade on the Porch after each service. Join us on the front porch outside the middle front doors for fellowship, cool drinks and pre-packaged snacks!

SPECIAL MUSICAL GUESTS - August 15th Bob Hitch has kindly arranged for the men's quartet he sings in to join us in church on Aug 15th. They will offer several pieces during the service, including Precious Lord Take My Hand and It is Well with My Sould. Many thanks to Bob and his musical friends for sharing their tal-ents....Please join us for this special treat!

THE CHURCH NEEDS YOU!: As we begin to return to more “normal” Sunday services, we need your help! Currently, we need volunteers for the following areas: Ushers for 8:30 and 10:30 services Crucifers EMs Nursery Minister Nursery Workers If you are interested in volunteering for any of these positions, please contact Cathy in the of-

fice at [email protected] and she will put you in touch with the appropriate person.

COMPLINE: The nightly Compline service will resume on Sunday evening, August 15 at 8:00 PM on Face-book. The service generally lasts about 15 minutes and will be led by parishioners from ECOHS. We are hoping that the leaders who served when this started last year will want to continue to serve in this ministry but we are looking for more volunteers. Please contact Alice Bryan - 770-367-1130 or [email protected] - for more information or to volun-teer. At any rate, come and worship with us; it's just a nice way to end the day.

WEDNESDAY NOON EUCHARIST: We have resumed our traditional Wednesday noon Eucharist. We are now meeting in the Nave.

NAMETAGS: Please be sure to wear your nametag at church on Sundays. This will help Fr. Brandon get to know everyone’s name along with their face! If you do not have a nametag, please add your name to the list on the back of the Parish Hall door. In the meantime, please make yourself a handwritten nametag. Blank tags and pens can be found on the table in the breezeway hallway.

Drive Through Pilgrimage:

We now have seven Drive Thru Pilgrimage prayer stations open on the Holy Spirit campus. The map below shows all the locations which are close to parking spaces on the site. Please take advantage of this beautiful early spring weather to get reac-quainted with some of the venues on our site and perhaps do some quiet medita-tion. Each station has a special plaque with a story about the venue, a poem and a scripture verse. Special thanks to the committee that created this drive through experience for our parish...Donna Cross, Gale Clarida and Jay & Carol Franklin. Thanks also to pa-rishioner Jim Zavorski and Alpha Sign company for working with the committee to provide the plaques for these stations.

Outreach/Mission Page 9

Honduras Mission Update Please consider joining with us on a mission trip to Honduras in support of the LAMB Institute. Our mission team from Holy Spirit is joining with St. David's in Roswell for a trip to Honduras over the New Years period similar to what we did in 2019/2020. Our likely dates are December 27th - January 3rd. The LAMB Institute has us in the schedule and we will need to firm up plans and make travel arrangement by October 1st. LAMB is requiring that all team members be vaccinated for COVID, but at this point Honduras is no longer requiring a COVID-19 test within 72 hours of arrival. This should be a great multi-generational mission trip similar to the ones in past years where we will be able to work at and interact with the children and staff of the Chil-dren's Home in San Buena Ventura, have an evening activity with an Alonzo Movement group at the school in Flor del Campo and have some free time for a visit to the Valley of the Angels. If you would like to consider joining our "away team" for this mission trip, please contact Jay Franklin at 404-274-2769 to learn more about the planning process, activities and sharing our faith with these wonderful kids. The trip is open to high schoolers and older. Cost is $750 plus airfare.

Thank you! Jay Franklin

We are grateful for those who are doing their best to keep their giving to the church current. In this season when much of our life together is confined to virtual settings, the best ways to make a donation or pay your pledge are online or by check. There are some helpful hints for each below.

Easy ways to keep your giving up-to-date with the church: ONLINE: Through the ECOHS website: Go to the church website at www.ecohs.net. Click on the blue online giving button halfway down the home page on the left. Follow the prompts. You can set up recurring payments or a one time payment.. Call Cathy in the office if you have questions or need assistance. 770-887-8190. TEXT GIVING: Text ECOHS to 73256. Clink the link in the return text. Enter the dollar amount (no deci-mal). Select the fund code from the drop down menu: pledging member if you have made a pledge or non-pledging member if you have not made a pledge this year. Tap the give but-ton. First time users will need to enter their name and credit card information. Subsequent uses will process after tapping the give button. You will receive a text back with a receipt. CHECKS: You can mail a personal check or you can set up automatic online checks with your bank.

For all checks, please be sure to mail the checks to this address:
