GENERAL ACCLAMATION 355

Celebrant: Blessed be God: Father, Son, and Holy Spirit.

People: And blessed be his kingdom, now and forever. Amen.

COLLECT FOR PURITY 355 Celebrant: Almighty God, to you all hearts are open, all desires known, and from you no secrets are

hid: Cleanse the thoughts of our hearts by the inspiration of your Holy Spirit, that we may perfectly love

you, and worthily magnify your holy Name; through Christ our Lord. Amen.

GLORIA IN EXCELSIS (spoken at 8:30) Hymnal S-280

1. Glory to God in the highest,

and peace to his people on earth.

2. Lord God, heavenly King,

almighty God and Father,

we worship you, we give you thanks,

we praise you for your glory.

3. Lord Jesus Christ, only Son of the Father,

Lord God, Lamb of God,

4. you take away the sin of the world:

have mercy on us;

COLLECT OF THE DAY Celebrant: Lord, we pray that your grace may always precede and follow us, that we may

continually be given to good works; through Jesus Christ our Lord, who lives and reigns with

you and the Holy Spirit, one God, now and for ever. Amen.

THE FIRST READING: Jeremiah 29:1, 4-7 Reader: These are the words of the letter that the prophet Jeremiah sent from Jerusalem to the

remaining elders among the exiles, and to the priests, the prophets, and all the people, whom

Nebuchadnezzar had taken into exile from Jerusalem to Babylon.

Thus says the Lord of hosts, the God of Israel, to all the exiles whom I have sent into exile from

Jerusalem to Babylon: Build houses and live in them; plant gardens and eat what they produce.

Take wives and have sons and daughters; take wives for your sons, and give your daughters in

marriage, that they may bear sons and daughters; multiply there, and do not decrease. But seek

the welfare of the city where I have sent you into exile, and pray to the Lord on its behalf, for in

its welfare you will find your welfare.

5. you are seated at the right hand

of the Father:

receive our prayer.

6. For you alone are the Holy One,

you alone are the Lord,

7. you alone are the Most High,

Jesus Christ, with the Holy Spirit,

in the glory of God the Father, Amen

Reader: Hear what the Spirit is saying to God’s people.

People: Thanks be to God.

PSALM 66:1-8 (spoken at 8:30) 1 Be joyful in God, all you lands; *

sing the glory of his Name;

sing the glory of his praise.

2 Say to God, "How awesome are your deeds! *

because of your great strength your enemies cringe before you.

3 All the earth bows down before you, *

sings to you, sings out your Name."

4 Come now and see the works of God, *

how wonderful he is in his doing toward all people.

5 He turned the sea into dry land,

so that they went through the water on foot, *

and there we rejoiced in him.

6 In his might he rules for ever;

his eyes keep watch over the nations; *

let no rebel rise up against him.

7 Bless our God, you peoples; *

make the voice of his praise to be heard;

8 Who holds our souls in life, *

and will not allow our feet to slip.

THE SECOND READING: 2 Timothy 2:8-15 Reader: Remember Jesus Christ, raised from the dead, a descendant of David-- that is my

gospel, for which I suffer hardship, even to the point of being chained like a criminal. But the

word of God is not chained. Therefore I endure everything for the sake of the elect, so that they

may also obtain the salvation that is in Christ Jesus, with eternal glory. The saying is sure:

If we have died with him, we will also live with him;

if we endure, we will also reign with him; if we deny him, he will also deny us;

if we are faithless, he remains faithful--

for he cannot deny himself.

Remind them of this, and warn them before God that they are to avoid wrangling over words,

which does no good but only ruins those who are listening. Do your best to present yourself to

God as one approved by him, a worker who has no need to be ashamed, rightly explaining the

word of truth.

Reader: Hear what the Spirit is saying to God’s people.

People: Thanks be to God.

SEQUENCE Bless the Lord my soul Songbook 15 Please stand.

Gospeller: The Holy Gospel of our Lord Jesus Christ according to Luke.

People: Glory to you, Lord Christ.

THE HOLY GOSPEL: Luke 17:11-19 Gospeller: On the way to Jerusalem Jesus was going through the region between Samaria

and Galilee. As he entered a village, ten lepers approached him. Keeping their distance, they

called out, saying, "Jesus, Master, have mercy on us!" When he saw them, he said to them, "Go

and show yourselves to the priests." And as they went, they were made clean. Then one of them,

when he saw that he was healed, turned back, praising God with a loud voice. He prostrated

himself at Jesus' feet and thanked him. And he was a Samaritan. Then Jesus asked, "Were not ten

made clean? But the other nine, where are they? Was none of them found to return and give

praise to God except this foreigner?" Then he said to him, "Get up and go on your way; your faith

has made you well."

Gospeller: The Gospel of the Lord.

People: Praise to you, Lord Christ.

THE SERMON Rev. Dr. Ron Taylor

~ (Silence follows the Sermon) ~

THE NICENE CREED 358 We believe in one God,

the Father, the Almighty,

maker of heaven and earth,

of all that is, seen and unseen.

We believe in one Lord, Jesus Christ,

the only Son of God,

eternally begotten of the Father,

God from God, Light from Light,

true God from true God,

begotten, not made,

of one Being with the Father.

Through him all things were made.

For us and for our salvation

he came down from heaven:

by the power of the Holy Spirit

he became incarnate from the Virgin Mary,

and was made man.

For our sake he was crucified under Pontius Pilate:

he suffered death and was buried.

On the third day he rose again

in accordance with the Scriptures;

he ascended into heaven

and is seated at the right hand of the Father.

He will come again in glory to judge the living and the dead,

and his kingdom will have no end.

We believe in the Holy Spirit, the Lord, the giver of life,

who proceeds from the Father and the Son.

With the Father and the Son he is worshiped and glorified.

He has spoken through the prophets.

We believe in one holy catholic and apostolic Church.

We acknowledge one baptism for the forgiveness of sins.

We look for the resurrection of the dead,

and the life of the world to come. Amen.

Praise Him above ye heavenly hosts,

Page 7: THE EPISCOPAL CHURCH OF ST. PETER BY-THE-LAKEimages.acswebnetworks.com/1/3053/095322_101319_BLTN_830.pdf · 3 Reader: Hear what the Spirit is saying to God’s people. People: Thanks

7

You who have been here often and you who have not been here long,

You who have tried to follow and those who struggle to find the path.

Come, because it is God who invites you.

It is God’s will that those who desire to do so should meet God here.

THE GREAT THANKSGIVING (Eucharistic Prayer A) 361

Celebrant: The Lord be with you.

People: And also with you.

Celebrant: Lift up your hearts.

People: We lift them to the Lord.

Celebrant: Let us give thanks to the Lord our God.

People: It is right to give him thanks and praise.

Celebrant: It is right, and a good and joyful thing, always and everywhere to give

thanks to you, Father Almighty, Creator of heaven and earth. (Preface of the day.) Therefore we praise you, joining our voices with Angels and Archangels and with all the

company of heaven, who for ever sing this hymn to proclaim the glory of your Name:

SANCTUS S - 129

Holy, holy, holy Lord, God of power and might,

heaven and earth are full of your glory.

Hosanna in the highest.

Blessed is he who comes in the name of the Lord.

Hosanna in the highest.

The people stand or kneel.

Celebrant: Holy and gracious Father: In your infinite love you made us for yourself; and,

when we had fallen into sin and become subject to evil and death, you, in your mercy, sent

Jesus Christ, your only and eternal Son, to share our human nature, to live and die as one of us,

to reconcile us to you, the God and Father of all.

He stretched out his arms upon the cross, and offered himself, in obedience to your will,

a perfect sacrifice for the whole world.

On the night he was handed over to suffering and death, our Lord Jesus Christ took bread;

and when he had given thanks to you, he broke it, and gave it to his disciples, and said, “Take,

eat: This is my Body, which is given for you. Do this for the remembrance of me.”

After supper he took the cup of wine; and when he had given thanks, he gave it to them,

and said, “Drink this, all of you: This is my Blood of the new Covenant, which is shed for

you and for many for the forgiveness of sins. Whenever you drink it, do this for the

remembrance of me.” Therefore we proclaim the mystery of faith:

Celebrant

And People: Christ has died.

Christ is risen.

Christ will come again.

Celebrant: We celebrate the memorial of our redemption, O Father, in this sacrifice of praise

and thanksgiving. Recalling his death, resurrection, and ascension, we offer you these gifts.

Sanctify them by your Holy Spirit to be for your people the Body and Blood of your Son, the holy

food and drink of new and unending life in him. Sanctify us also that we may faithfully receive

this holy Sacrament, and serve you in unity, constancy, and peace; and at the last day bring us

with all your saints into the joy of your eternal kingdom.

All this we ask through your Son Jesus Christ. By him, and with him, and in him, in the unity of

the Holy Spirit all honor and glory is yours, Almighty Father, now and for ever. AMEN.

A Word From The Rev. Dr. Ron Taylor

Healing the Outcast & Alienated This Sunday’s Gospel narrates how Jesus even-handedly healed nine Jewish lepers and one Samaritan. A double outcast in Jewish society as both Samaritan and leper, he found companionship with other outcasts, Jewish lepers who lived with him on the margin of two societies, “along the borders of Samaria and Galilee.” Jesus, true to the Jewish tradition centered on Jerusalem, told all ten lepers to “go and show yourselves to the priests” in Jerusalem, who could alone certify their restoration to health and to normal society. All ten did so, but one – unwelcome, perhaps, in Jerusalem – returned to the Temple of the New Covenant, Jesus himself. “He threw himself on his face at the feet of Jesus and spoke His praises. This man was a Samaritan.” The faith of the Samaritan healed not only leprosy but also alienation from God, the alienation from which all peoples suffer: “Your faith has been your salvation.”…This Samaritan received at the hands of Jesus more than he had hoped for, that healing of alienation that we all need, no matter what nation or tribe we call our own… The Second letter to Timothy comes from an outcast as well, one thrown into Jail for his identification with the outcast who death set humankind free. “This is the Gospel I preach; in preaching it I suffer as a criminal, even to the point of being thrown into chains – but there is no chaining the Word of God!” (Patrick J. Ryan – ‘America’, October 1992) Faithfully, Father Ron

Backpacks for Kids Ministry –

Helping Feed Local Kids One Backpack at a Time The Mission-Outreach Team currently helps feed local, hungry school children on

weekends and school breaks. The children served in this program qualify for free or

reduced lunch and the food-filled backpacks are discreetly distributed through the school

guidance counselor.

We currently have 10 children (Kindergarten-5th Grade) at St. James Elementary School. The

program typically provides the following each weekend (although if it is a long weekend due to a

school holiday, those days are covered also):

2 breakfasts 2 lunches 3 dinners 5 snacks

Backpack Team: Marianne Boles, Priscilla Foley, Carmen Hatley, Jean Hatley, Mary LaBranche,

Carole Rowell PLUS 18 families (Anzalone, Driggers, Duggan, Ireland, Jarvis, Johnson, Jordan,

Kosmala, Lifsey, Lunney, Paasch/Jacobs, Racz, Reid, Solmaz, Stewart, Weed, Wiley, Willis) who

provide the monthly food AND Ronnie Rudd, whose company donates multiple food items.

For more information, please contact Carmen Hatley ([email protected] or 704-995-3796)

or Carole Rowell ([email protected] or 704-516-2312)

A monthly highlight of organizations we support with our Time, Talent and Treasure.
