January - Dedicated to Holy Name of Jesus
“Glorious name, gracious name, name of love and of power! Through you sins are forgiven, through you enemies are vanquished, through
you the sick are freed from their illness, through you those suffering in trials are made strong and cheerful. You bring honor to those who believe, you teach those who preach, you give strength
to the toiler, you sustain the weary” St. Bernardine of Siena
Q. I no%ce that the priest and the deacon
kisses the altar at the beginning and end of
Mass. My grandmother said that they are
honoring the bones of martyrs that are
cemented in the altar. Is this true?
A. No, as far as to your grandmother’s interpreta%on of the
kiss; and some%mes, as to her telling you that the relics of
martyrs are there. The kiss is a sign of reverence to the altar
itself. It comes, as far as we know, from ancient Roman table
e%queAe. At the beginning of a meal, the head of the family
would make a sign of reverence to the banquet table itself.
The first Roman Chris%ans preserved this familiar custom,
bringing it from their pagan vocabulary and kind of bap%zing it
with a new meaning in their worship. The ancient prac%ce of
keeping the relics of saints, ideally martyrs, in or under the
altar is “fiPngly retained” according to today’s liturgical law,
but clearly op%onal. Part of the rite of the consecra%on of a
Church is for the bishop to actually cement these under the
altar table. The kiss, received from the Church of Rome and
copied widely throughout the Chris%an world, is an indicator
that the holy table is the sign of Christ’s presence in the
assembly. Your grandmother learned about the “altar stone”
long ago when it was an essen%al part of every “Mass kit” for
military chaplains. I’m sure that military chaplains deployed
to difficult assignments are relieved not to have to lug around
a slab of marble in order to provide soldiers with the
opportunity to celebrate Eucharist! History gives us some
evidence that penitents were some%mes advised to kiss the
altar a<er their reconcilia%on. Not so long ago, children in
some families who disturbed the peace at the family meal
were some%mes told to kiss the table in a sign of their sorrow
for stressing everyone out. Maybe this is a beAer solu%on
than sending someone to bed without their supper. Be
careful how you tell your grandmother she was partly wrong
of pearls; daisy; wreath of marguerites; long cross; crown

By Dr. Scott Hahn A King to Behold
Feast of the Epiphany (Cycle A) Isaiah 60:1-6; Psalm 72:-12,7-8, 10-13 Ephesians 3:2-3,5-6; MaAhew 2:1-12
An "epiphany" is an appearance. In today's readings, with
their rising stars, splendorous lights and mysteries revealed,
the face of the child born on Christmas day appears.
Herod, in today's Gospel, asks the chief priests and scribes
where the Messiah is to be born. The answer MaAhew puts
on their lips says much more, combining two strands of Old
Testament promise - one revealing the Messiah to be from
the line of David (see 2 Samuel 2:5), the other predic%ng "a
ruler of Israel" who will "shepherd his flock" and whose
"greatness shall reach to the ends of the earth" (see Micah
5:1-3).
Those promises of Israel's king ruling the na%ons resound
also in today's Psalm. The psalm celebrates David's son,
Solomon. His kingdom, we sing, will stretch "to the ends of
the earth," and the world's kings will pay Him homage.
That's the scene too in today's First Reading, as na%ons
stream from the East, bearing "gold and frankincense" for
Israel's king.
The Magi's pilgrimage in today's Gospel marks the
fulfillment of God's promises. The Magi, probably Persian
astrologers, are following the star that Balaam predicted
would rise along with the ruler's staff over the house of
Jacob (see Numbers 24:17).
Laden with gold and spices, their journey evokes those
made to Solomon by the Queen of Sheba and the "kings of
the earth" (see 1 Kings 10:2,25; 2 Chronicles 9:24).
Interes%ngly, the only other places where frankincense and
myrrh are men%oned together are in songs about Solomon
(see Song of Songs 3:6, 4:6,14).
One greater than Solomon is here (see Luke 11:31). He
has come to reveal that all peoples are "co-heirs" of the
royal family of Israel, as today's Epistle teaches.
His manifesta%on forces us to choose: Will we follow the
signs that lead to Him as the wise Magi did? Or will we be
like those priests and the scribes who let God's words of
promise become dead leAers on an ancient page?
