Congratulations! Richard Boorady and Nohade Asmar were married on January 2, 1962. Our best wishes as they celebrate their golden wedding anniversary. Enduring love is a living sign of God’s presence.

On January 1, I led a prayer at the inauguration of our new mayor and the installation of the members of the city council and other key posts. All of us join in sending our best wishes to Mayor A.J. Dolce and in sincerely thanking Mayor Frey. There is good reason that frequently we pray for those selected as public leaders in the Prayer of the Faithful. Committed service entails much sacrifice. Pat Frey and Jordan Dolce will attest that the sacrifices called for go far beyond the actual office holder. Despite cynicism, political leadership at every level is a very noble profession. Because our elected officials voluntarily put themselves in the public eye, they are easy targets of criticism, even personal attacks. Thank you Mayor Dolce and former Mayor Frey for your commitment to this city. Mandatory Workshop for Youth Workers All employees and any parish volunteer, who works with youth, less than 18 years old, must attend a Protecting God’s Children workshop. These are given periodically at various locations throughout the Diocese. This workshop will be held on January 18 and also on February 8 at 1:00 p.m. in the Catholic Center, 795 Main St. in Buffalo. The sessions last for 3 and 1/2 hours. Pre-registration is strongly recommended. Go to www.buffalodiocese.org and you will find the tab on the left side of the screen. For more information, call Wendy Kachermeyer at 366-2827.

Once again, thank you to all who volunteered to pray for one hour a week. Due to a recent illness, we are in need of someone to pray from 11 a.m. to noon every Tuesday. If you can help, please call the rectory at 366-1750.

Pro-Life Message In the eyes of the world those who are in the last stages of life are somehow diminished in their humanity and should be eliminated. We must see them through God’s eyes and recognize that each and every person is created in his image and likeness and that we are all connected to God and to each other. We are our brother’s keeper and our sister’s helper. Cain, who forgot he was his brother’s keeper, ended up becoming his executioner. ‘Thou shall not kill’ is God’s law and it is written in our hearts by our Creator.

~Cardinal Seán O’Malley, Archbishop of Boston, Homily, Red Mass, Sept. 19, 2011
