THE EMPIRE

OUR MISSION

PHASE ONE - BRAINSTORMING

We began our task by meeting at the Murdoch library and using brainstorming and mind mapping techniques to decide on a subject to focus on.

Science

Weather

Rain

After deciding on science, further group discussion narrowed our topic down to weather, and specifically rain fall.

We agreed learning about the weather is an important life skill and can easily be taught in an authentic learning environment.

PHASE TWO - RESEARCH

We started by assigning each group member an aspect of weather to research; rain fall, temperature, wind and clouds.

But after inspecting the Australian Curriculum, we decided to concentrate specifically on rain fall. Measuring the rain will fit nicely with year 3 science and maths.

Now that we had our topic, we could all choose an area of the project to work on and begin researching. Wiki design, resources, student task and teacher info.

PHASE THREE - IMPLEMENTATION

Once we were clear on what we had to do, we started constructing our Wiki page. We found it hard to operate at first, but soon got the hang of it.

As most of our group members were geographically challenged, we used the modern wonder that is the internet to swap ideas and work on our project.

Together we conceived a 6 week plan for students to collect rain fall in a gauge they have constructed, and graph the results.

We included plenty of teacher resources, such as Excel tutorials, rain gauge Wikis, student log sheets and links to meteorological websites.

We also provided some handy hints for teachers including a basic lesson structure, and tips for linking other elements of weather to rainfall.

This will help students to be able to predict weather patterns using their own data and collective reasoning.

Not everything went exactly to plan. We unfortunately lost a team member on the way.

But together as a team we all pitched in and got the job done.

Our wiki page now had a complete overview of our topic to help prospective teachers educate children about the weather.

With our wiki page all put together nicely, we set about making our presentation on ‘the making of’.

To counteract our evil and imposing name and page set up, we added some crudely drawn paintbrush artwork to cheer it up a bit…
