The Elucidator AN SIMC(UG) INITIATIVE | MAADHYAM, 26 AUGUST, 2014 | SP2. ISSUE 4 SIMPLIFY, LEARN, EMPOWER MANEK KOHLI [email protected] Pune: Maadhyam, the lit- erary and debate festival organised by The literary and Debating Society of Symbiosis Institute of Me- dia and Communication (Undergraduate) is finally here. Excitement filled the air on Tuesday morn- ing as the entire college flocked the auditorium, ready to witness exciting events such as the Poetry Slam, Shipwreck and The Big debate in the morn- ing session. Audiences were enthralled as Sagar Kamath and Alok Oak, es- teemed faculty members of the college, partook in a communism vs capitalism debate as a premonition to the ‘big debate’ event. In Shipwreck, students had to creatively enact a particular character and attempt to escape a situ- ation. In the post lunch ses- sion, a plethora of exciting events such as Chakravy- uh, the much anticipated Maadhyam resurrected debate between student participants and Profes- sor Anupam Siddhartha, diector of SIMC-UG will indeed keep the audience at the edge of their seat. Other events such as the Quiz, Block and Tackle and Just a Minute are also expected to keep the audi- ences thoroughly enter- tained. Maadhyam is indeed heading towards great success, as showcased by the morning session. It has indeed succeeded in becoming a literary and debating spectacle. The future seems rather bright for the festival. Maadhyam was con- ceptualised in 2011, the same year in which it was held twice, in January and in September. This is the third edition in the series. The event started off with the participants from Batch 2017- Shayonita Ma- lik (Barney- the dinosaur) and Stacy Samuel (Sania Mirza). This was followed by the hilarious perfor- mances from Batch 2016- Shrawan Banerjee (Rakhi Sawant) a n d Ashwin Laxmi- narayan (Kanye West). Batch 2 0 1 5 partici- pants Vansh Luthra (Man- mohan Singh) a n d Devang S e t h (Sheldon Cooper) culmi- nated the event. RHEA DANGWAL [email protected] Pune: “Communism in India” is and has always been a hotly debated con- cept between scholars at large. The big debate event of the literary and debate fest Maadhyam at SIMC (UG) had this very topic. It started off as a one on one discussion with the depart- ment’s scholars, Prof.Sa- gar Kamath and Prof.Alok Oak, both teachers of His- tory and Political Science respectively. The audience was left applauding and cheering as the two teach- ers, with wit and facts by their side battled it out to prove their point across. While Prof.Alok Oak spoke pro-Communism, Prof. Sagar Kamath refuted his stand by speaking pro- de- mocracy and it’s conse- quence; Capitalism. e Big Debate : Clash of Ideologies Their debate was a pre- liminary introduction to the main competition be- tween the speakers from each of the three batches. The student’s debate started with two competi- tors from each batch giv- ing their stand and their views on the topic on com- munism. This was followed by a rebuttal by the competi- tors among themselves. The competition brought out some of the best speakers and debaters the institute has seen. At the end it was agreed upon that the debate on this topic could go on to no end. Quoting Prof. Alok Oak, “What is needed in the society right now is not to shun capitalism but to not allow blood shed to be the only means of freedom either. At the end of the day, what we crave for is the welfare of the society”.
