Some time ago when I first saw a student clad in a sweatshirt w ith

"Buffalo State" proud ly printed on his chest, I was consumed with envy. I cou ld just picture this lucky devil swaggering about the Buffalo State campus hundreds of miles away from here, a truly American inst itution situated in the go lden plains beneath a relentless sun; where the adobe classrooms contained students reciting Shakespeare and Dostoevski in an oh-so-casual drawl; where curvaceous young ladies and virile young men roamed the plateaus and buttes in thei r cowboy hats and boots and tans, singing

. songs in the manner of Boxcar Willie and Slim Whitman; where the days were fi lled w ith reading and studying during the intramura l buffalo herding and the nights were fill ed with the sound of young lovers. cavorting amongst the cactus .

This beautifu l fa ntasy quickly evaporated when I regained my reason and real ized that Buffalo State was a college located in Buffalo, New York, and not the tumbleweed strewn Mid-West. A sill y mistake on my part, espec ially since I live on Grand Island, only 20 minutes away from here . Perhaps it was the sweatshirted student's female companion that briefly threw me off. After all , she was an 800 lb. spec imen of the bovine persuasion (th is is no colorfu l description of an immense woman; I'm being qu ite literal. She was a dairy cow, a large beast that goes "moo", and occas ional ly hums the jingle to Land-O-Lakes's Margarine. I will admit, however, she was rather cute with her designer jeans, halter top, and gold nose ring.)

You may well wonder what my point is. No matter how many couples you may come across on this campus that are 50% livestock, your knowledge of this area is firm; you w ill never forget that Buffalo State College is located here and not there (or even over there to the left a bit). So, I suppose that means I've

Note: Looking at the photographs in this section, one can see the "difference-ness" and the same-ness" of various people and places. See how people demonstrate their "same-ness" in one community? See the fascinating "different-ness" of people who share the same dorm room? See the "similarity-ness" of "different-wise" people, "different-wise" due 10 their "foreign-like" cities or countries? See the "universal-ness" of the roles of pets and animals with humans despite the "unlike-like" physical appearances of the critters? See the "evidenceiality" of this curious phenomenon that holds true for all "human-like" people?

Amazing!

been redundant from the very beginning. Is that what you're trying to tell me? Okay, fine. I' ll change the subject. But, before I do - let me relate a tiny piece of trivia that some out-of-state students may find interesting from a purely educational perspective (just the sort of thing to start a conversation with, or to begin one of those surprise quizzes that you give to unexpected relatives). I'm referring to the sign ifi cance of our city's name - Buffalo. Contrary to popular belief, Buffalo did not become Buffalo because of the huge population of bison that once strolled about here many years ago. Buffalo is derived from the French word " bouf-Ioe" - but only its spelling. The correct pronounciation of " bouf-Ioe" is surprisingly closer to the American "department store". It's meaning, however, is sti ll remarkably relevant to this day despite the passage of a few centuries. "Bouf-Ioe" - "home of the waltzing hair stylists."

Incredible, huh? Those French trappers certain ly knew the essence of a community. But, that's the city. What of Buffalo State? Is it also a mere "home of waltzing hair styl ists?" Ah, I beg to differ.

L ike any other small community, Buffa lo State is composed of people.

Of course, I'm speaking only of human communities, so don't be smart and tell me an aquarium contains a small community that isn't composed of people, but has lots of guppies instead. (Although, last New Year's Eve, a neighbor of mine, Wilhelm von Kroonkmueller, got crocked and did a bell y f lop into my fish tank, thinking he was a U-boat. How that re lates to anything, I'm not sure).

Anyways, our tiny commun ity is not merely a large, dense mass of throbb ing flesh assembled by the simple add ition of thousands of quivering bodies. Besides merely taking up space and cl otting together, these bodies also have individual thinking personalities (True, some of these bodies would love to spend the ir time just taking up space by clotting together with other quivering bodies - preferably in the space of a dark closet or back seat of a Buickl. (cont'd) Though many students are from the

immediate area (Buffalo, Grand Island, Niagara Fal ls, Cheektowaga, Tonawanda, etc.), a portion of them have wandered in from different parts of the state, completely different states, or complete ly different countries. Definitely a mixed bag. Despite the var ied backgrounds, however, the students are simi lar enough to be plugged into the traditional exterior and interior descriptions:

1. Athletic looking males with a masculine build.

2. Athletic looking females with a feminine build.

3. Athletic looking males with a feminine build.

4. Athletic looking fema les with a masculine bui ld.

5. Thin to bony students. 6. Thick to portly students. 7. Stunningly handsome and attractive

students. 8. Plain students.

which are common only to our species; on the other hand, we are individually unique by our separate personalities as they express themselves through our varied wants, goals, and quirks, a quality also peculiarly human of us (homo sapien of us? never mind). It's an odd combination of same and different that ru ns through all of us . We always seem to encounter individuals whom we find to be in complete disagreement with and then one day they do something and we realize. they are "exactly" the same as us. Or else we know of some friend who shares all our tastes and opinions in movies, politics, and members of the opposite sex - but when we have a chance to view them closer, they're "completely" different. Obviously, in both cases, the people haven' t suddenly changed through some incredible Twilight Zone process. They're still them and of course, you're still you. But, that's the explanation , too. And that's the way it always wi ll be. Either here in Buff State or elsewhere. Right up unti l the day you and I punt the proverbial bucket. So there.

Well , if I had a point, I hope I' ve said it by now. I'd like to conclude with an incident that occurred to me a couple years back when I was showing my vacationing grandfather the sights in downtown Buffalo. While driving down Main Street, we encountered a minor collision between an extremely used VW and the rear of a just recently spotless Cadillac. The owner of the Cad illac was obviously upset and the other driver was apparently on someth i ng because he kept laughing at his own smashed fender. As a small crowd gathered to see what would happen between the two, th e irate man rolled up his sleeves to reveal thick, rippling forearms (gorilla in nature) and began to advance toward the other man, who was now helpless w ith lunatic gigling. I continued driv ing w hile looking back in the rear-view mirror, and saw the Cadillac owner proceed to comb the other driver' s hair by firmly pressing the man's face against a windshield and then tu rn ing on the wipers. It was a curious fi rst meeting between strangers, for sure, and whi le we w aited at the next light, I sat back and reflected on what I had just witnessed. However, it was Gramps, a surprisingly philosophical old coot, who put it into perspective for me by saying: "Human behavior ... what the hell would we do without it?"

Dr, Harry W, Rockwell, Pres ident 1949

We are to have the first dormitory in the history of teachers' colleges in New York State, Inaugurating this great advancement is Harry W, Rockwell, our co llege president. This new structure is the culmination of twenty years of planning and work on the part of our president. Many times Doctor Rockwell has contributed to the high standards of our college, and guided it towards its present prestige, With justi fied pride in success, which comes only through diligent effort, Dr, Rockwell is ever looking forward with a discerning eye on the co llege he built.

Elms 1949

The first dormitory in the history of teachers' colleges in New York State may have been a great advancement in 1949 but, the advancement needed for the '80's is an education wh ich will advance our soc iety out of the hole we have dug for ourselves in the past thirty years. Our society is living out the last years of its go lden age. In those past thirty yea rs our country has become one of the major world economic-military powers.

When you consider the fact that there are enough nuclear weapons to destroy the surface of the earth ten to twelve times over, you might wonder of what use the mi li tary is except su icide. " The better li v ing through "chemistry" of the last thirty years has made life easier, improved our health in some'respects, and helped grow abundant food. On the other hand, the residue from thi s better living through

chemistry causes many hea lth hazards including cancer, birth defects, and sterility. Thi s residue is seeping from its storage si tes, and the product ion lines into our water, ai r, and food, from there its on ly one step to the pollution of ourselves. The solutions to our minor problems is becoming a major source of our ill health.

It's time our educators sta rted to help so lve the problems our education has created. Don't on ly show us how to make plastics and P.C.B.'s but also show us how to keep them out of our environment. Our environment is the key here, we all share the environment system, it is not a closed system, what you do in "your environment affects the whole. Our system of education created these problems by not rea lizing the scope of interaction between what we produce and expelled into what is our personal envi ronment.

Our education has failed to bring world peace because people like Bruce Johnstone don't see that there is a moral question in whether our educational system supports militarism, or a reasoned approach to so lve our political and economic problems. Our education is doing us no good service by teach ing us how to irritate our neighbors or po ison our environment. We need an education wh ich w ill show us how to dismantle our arsenals as well as everybody else's, Let's keep our progress from polluting our envi ronment, and feed every child on this planet before anyone can afford to drive a cadi ll ac. We don 't need a life which is easier, we need one which is reasoned, fair, and enriching.

Art is a form of expression appealing to the imagination; it contains a deep appreciation for beauty that all can value.

This section contains four types of art: drawings, paintings, photographs and poetry. All the artists who have contributed their work in this section have talent, be it natural or acquired through tremendous effort. The significant fact to note is that they have cultivated this talent and are willing to share it with others.

It seems you playa joker and sometimes we laugh. But when the crowd goes home I wonder if you cry alone.

You can reach people by putting on you r faces,

Reaching in your trunk and pulling out a character.

And thru these faces, people know you - a Don Juan -a jock - a soldier - but which one is really you.

Can you act like yourself as well as you can playa hamlet, or are you never written into the script when you play yourself.

And the Actor . . . he knows when the curtain goes up,

And the Actor ... he regrets the curtains c losing.

Love

What is love an infatuation or a desire What makes the love of a mother for her newborn baby different, from that of a child and his dog We have all felt love But may not have had it retu rned It may have disappointed us We have certainly all envisioned it Running hand in hand along a lonely desolate beach with the pounding of waves and the cry of gulls at your backs Is love physical or platonic Can love be a relationship between a man and a woman And yet be a tenderness between two close friends Much can be said about love without anything being said at all

Howard B. MacAdam Athletic Director

"I hope they (Albany) don't cut us in the future, I'm looking at the other end of the spectrum to increasing our program," says Howard MacAdam. "Last year we added two sports, this year in the fall we added two more. Next year we're add ing football (that will be funded by the state.)"

It may wel l be called appreciation and determination referring to Mr. MacAdams contr ibutions to the athletic association. Players need spirit shown to them, showing the department care's is one way. They may be the poorest facilities in the state, but they're ours." " The women's program has increased rapidly add ing softball to the Varsity Sports and we are going to add cross-country and track.

"The department doesn' t feel isolated from the rest of the school. We work very closely with financial aid, registration, admissions, and housing. Although we are "slightly" divorced from academics ... the team players consistantly achieve high grade point averages for eli gibil ity." It is very hard to squeeze a spring sports program into three weeks, because we don't have much of a spring. But, one of the spring programs wi ll be under the direction of Helen Nikiel, former professional softball pitcher for the Buffalo Breski's. "She has an excellent reputation and I think she'l l help the softba ll team. I' ll be watching very closely in the spring. "

As for the directors attitude on the emp loyee's "they are doing a very good job." Says M r. MacAdam, "I would hi re the part-time people to full-time if I cou ld and if they'd be w illi ng."

"Most importantly I'm look ing forwa rd to a productive and successfu l winning season next year."

Gabri ella Bray Coached the BSCs women's field hockey team to a 4-w in, 5-1055 season th is year.

"I learned a lot thi s yea r, and I made some mistakes," sa id Gabriella, a U.B. graduate.

Gabe considers her team as a comeback team. "You never know if they' re going to pull ·through at the last minute. I've seen them score a goal and have it ca lled back. Then thi rty-seconds later, they'd get that goal back and w in the game."

Improving stick handl ing was her main concern , the lack of precision pass ing and shooti ng makes a play-off team. " The girls have a good game concept, and their skill s improved as the season went on ."

One drawback. that the hockey team experienced, was a short supply of players. " Eleven members are needed ju st to play and we only had 12 or 13 players. That didn't leave us much depth in case of injuries or other problems, " said Gabriella. .

Her players are a tight-knit group. "They got close as a team. They never got on each other when they made mistakes . The girls never got rough and always kept their composure."

The maturi ty of the lad ies field hockey team does not represent the won-loss reco rd , they are far above it. As for the ability, remember practice, practice, practice.

Coach Donna Nawrock has provided the Buffalo State volleyball enthusiasts w ith an exc iting brand of team

play. League championships and NYSAIAW tournament play have highlighted a 20-match schedule. Success has been an annual occurrence for the Bengal spikers in thi s

game of balance between consistent serving, solid defense, and a power offense. No longer just a

preparatory activity for basketball players, volleyball is earning a well-deserved place as an impressive sport for

-. women at Buffalo State.

"There's a lot of talent on the voll eyball team, but it' s difficult to get and keep up a whole team's psyche level

consistentl y." Fortunately the lady spikers are determined athletes.

~ "You' can 't anticipate year by year who's going to be back on your team . There's a great student turnover at

BSC, and I just have to hope that the incoming freshmen and transfers are tql ented," Donna says.

One thin g that Donna noti ces about her team is the motivation they exhibit: " It' s exciting to see the girls

achieve excellence, strive for superior skills."

It's first and goal, Dan Sansonese sets the team. The ball is snapped, helmets bang, shoulders crash, voices cry, and finally two arms are raised over a striped shirt.

There's a new game in town and Buffalo State is talking proud. Club Footbal l found its way to Buff. State and has found itself a home.

Head coach, Les Dugan along with Phil Russell , Joe Rupert, and Bruno Bacini took fifty students from the campus and turned them into a fighting machine.

This year the team played club football which was funded by the Student Activities Fund. This was done through Jack McDonough the teams faculty advisor. Next year the team will go Division III.

The players all felt that their record didn't show the talent they have. Mike Babin,"We had fifty walk on guys, no recruits, ... we made the usual first year mistakes, but we got together well as a team." Together they formed a team pride and unity wh ich wi II strenghten them next year as almost all of the players are returning. AI Potter spoke about. the coaches, "Our coaching staff was very patient, they took a chance on taking these jobs. I give them a lot of respect."

The team has the greatest admiration and respect for the fans. "We appreciated the turn out at the games and especially the Niagara game, we were coming off a loss. Homecoming was great even though we lost, we wanted to prove to everyone we had a good team."

Good coachiflg, pride, unity, and talent will turn the Buffalo State Football team into a serious contender in 1981.

Buffalo State fielded a soccer team as early as 1935. One of the few colleges in the flation to sponsor one at the time, it was the only Western New York college w ith varsity soccer until the 1960's. The Bengals have earned SUNYAC championships, NCAA tournameflt bids, high New York State afld national rankings (seventh in the U.S. in 1970), afld many individual player awards. All-New York State honors have gone to 38 players in recent years while All-America status has been earned by 11 men .

Recently they have just received the NCAA bid since 1960 and ending their season with a eleven win, four loss record, with two of their losses accounting for tournament play.

Tom Strutt and Antonio Occhiuto nominated with All-American status, continue to represent Buffalo State the only way they know how.

Guided by 20-year veterafl coach Fred Hartrick, there's no other way. The Bengal booters continue to be highly respected nationall y and locally. Home contests are played at Bengal Fie ld with its 1 ,ODD-seat stadi um adjacent to the gymnasium. A 19-9ame fal l schedule, fol lowed by an intensiv<, indoor program during the winter and participation in a summer soccer series, provides a demanding program for the Buffalo State soccer player. Coach Hartrick is special consultant to the Buffalo Sta ll ions of the indoor professional soccer league, chairman of the Empire State Games soccer for the region, and chairman of the All-America Committee for New York State.

MEN'S BASKETBALL

Page 174: The Elms 1981 - CORE

Basketball at Buffa lo State can best be su mmarized by mentioning two individua ls - Howard MacAdam and Randy Smith. Buffa lo has traditionally been a basketball town and, thus, a reputation of greatness is not easily attained. During the nine-year tenure of his coach ing career at State, MacAdam, the current athletic director, led the Bengals to numerous SUNYAC titles, ECAC-NAIA-NCAA tournament bids, and a final fou rth place finish in the 1970 NCAA College Division finals. This is the highest place achieved by a State men's ath letic team in an NCAA tourn ament. The latest count for basketba ll team tourn ament bids is nine.

MacAdam was responsible for attracting the inimitab le Randy Smith to Buffalo State. Randy's accomplishments in soccer, basketball, and track (he earned All-America status in all three) are wel l known loca lly. His successes as an NBA professional player and selection as MVP of the 1978 NBA All Star game prove that he deserves the label as "Best Athlete Ever at Buffalo State."

Basketball at State is again striving to reach the top under coach Dick Bihr, a grad uate of State himse lf and a former teammate of Randy. A fu l1 2S-game schedule includes contests aga inst SUNYAC college, as well as other rival New York, Pennsylvania, and Ohio schoo ls. Holiday tournaments and overnight trips to out-of-area universities complete the five-month season.

The cherished prize is always the automatic bid awarded to the SUNYAC cha mpion for entry into the NCAA Division III tournament. Home games are played at the 1800-seat Bengal Gymnasium. Intense and rewarding, high caliber and successfu l, commitment and fun - all these summarize basketbal l at Buffalo State .

Donna patterns the practices as two hours a day, six days a week.

"It's easy to get one girl geared up when she has to swim individually." replied coach Nawrocki.

Donna cites commuter colleges I ike BSC as causing the big turnover in team membership. "You can't anticipate year by year who's gonna be back on your team. I just have to hope that the incoming freshman and transfers are talented.'

"If I could make a change for our team, it would be to get more mOI~ey from USC. New equipment, just to l<eep the teams updated, is needed. The swim team needs new diving boards to keep the facilities up to par," said Coach Nawrocki.

One thing that Donna notices about her team is the motivation they exhibit. "It's exciting to see the girls achieve excellance striving for superior skills."

Swimming has been a consistently successful part of Buffalo State Athletics. In a recent IS-year span, the Bengals did not have a losing season. They won five SUNYAC championships and ga ined recognition by having 23 ind ividuals named to the NCAA All -American teams. Under Coach Kent Clulow, the swim team is expected to continue toward its goal of additional conference, state, and national recognition.

"We're in a rebuilding stage. We have a lot of freshman," says Mr. Clulow . There wi ll be plenty to look forward to in the fu ture for th is State team. Said Coach Clulow, " The teams performance is improving- all along."

SET UP CREW ~

ATHLETIC TRAINER

Hard-working, professional, helpful, successful all these summarize Tony Sartori, Head Athletic Trainer. Work gets done when Mr. Sartori is around, a former State grad. The talented trainer also employs the positions as Head equipment manager, statistician (baseball and basketball), team photographer, unofficial team psychiatrist, and over-all Mother Hen.

Unbel ievab le? Believe it. If there was somebody to look up to its Tony. Why, he's the type of person to represent the working class and stil l enjoy it. It will be obvious when you need anything in the gym, the man in the mustache wi II probably be the one you run into.

Says Mr. Sartori, "The truth is; it's not a job it's so much fun. I'm almost ashamed to get paid: but not quite. "

Set up crew is a group of dedicated people who take the initiative and carry out the informal. The arrangement, the final adjustments of doubts and differances are made before the big game.

The fresh clean uniforms, the swept courts, the bleachers pulled out, all these are the fundamentals of the set up crew. The boy scout like assistance of this group is amazing. Truly the readyness beforehand is their goal they do well.

The pro is my shepard, I shall not slice . He maketh me to drive straight down green fairways . He leadeth me safely across still water hazards. He restoreth my approach shots. He leadeth me in the paths of accuracy for my games sake. Yea though I chip through the roughs in the shadows of the sand traps I will fear no hogies, for his advice is with me. His putter and irons, they comfort me. He prepareth me a strategy in the presence of my opponents. He onointeth my head with confidence. The cup wi ll not be runneth over. WOMEN'S SOFTBALL

The most recent addition to the women's athletic program has been softball. If their performance in the first two years is any indication, the lady softballers will soon be the winningest of all teams. A large number of women hopefuls will be whittled down this year to a finely tuned squad of skilled players.

Helen Ann Nikiel, a former Buff State Grad knew in October of 80 she'd be coaching the women's softball team this 81 season. The recent porularity of our new coach, has rubbed off on the Bengal softbal enthusiasts. Preparing to polish up this year for a division title. Says Miss Nikiel, "Practices need to be organized and goals must be set so we can prepare ourselves properly."

Long hours and regimented practices are out this season, production of both coordination and concentration are in.

Miss Nikiel plans to start the season with a full week of fundamentals before making any cuts,a softball clinic atmosphere. Says Miss Nikiel, "Coaching doesn't start after cuts."

MEN'S BASEBALL

Although the spring season arrives in Buffalo at varying times and is unpredictable, the Buffalo State baseball team can be counted upon to contribute fully to a successful athletic program, no matter what the weather. Since the mid-1950's, baseball has been the "spring thing" on campus. National tournament bids, All America champions, professional draftees, fine records- all have been experienced by the Bengal nines.

Competing in SUNYAC, Buffalo State also schedules local NCAA Division I schools for a total of 25 contests. Home games are played at the 750-seat diamond adjacent to the gym. Spring trips to the southern states, a fall mini -schedule, and intensive indoor practices go into building successful seasons. Under Coach lim Manno, a grand national pastime of baseball is alive and well at Buffalo State .

... Detroit, Philadelphia, Pittsburgh, Toronto, Rochester, Syracuse,

Cornell ... if you run indoor track at State you will visit these places for top.level competition. Coach Mike Callopy, an alumnus of the

Buffalo State track team and still a participant in national competition, has developed . an intensive indoor track program. There is no such thing as an "off season" for runners who can train all year

for cross country,.indoor or outdoor track. Women track runf!ers, under Coach Mark Grosso, have been the

center of attention arid amazement as the too few runners show the sFirit the men have possessed.

The facilities to comfortably handle al aspirants combined with the coaching expertise and personal interest of the well qualified staff

provide the track and field candidates with an unequaled opportunity for improvement and success .

BUSINESS MANAGER

Camille Spyra duties stem anywhere from transportation, payroll, purchasing of equipment, stenographer and oh yes, typer to ticket booth operator and bulletin poster.

Keeping the athletic department in top operation is a big responsibility. That's why athletics and business need to combine in order to function properly. Nobody wonders how the athletes arri ve to an away game or how they got their nice new water bottles. Or even w here the money goes from a home basketball game, well Camille does and she's got records to prove it. . With calculator and sharpened pencil in hand Camille lurke, in all the dusty gym corne rs tallyi ng up the wants and needs of our "freshly scented" New Gym.

WOMEN'S ATHLETIC DIRECTOR

Gail Maloney is coach of this years women's basketball team as well as Assistant Director of

Ath letics at BSC This is Gails thi rd year at BSC and she's very proud that under her direction, the women's

sports department is continual ly growing. With the addition of softba ll , cross country and track and field, the total number of varsity sports that the women at BSC can participate in, has risen

to nine. "The program here has shown tremendous growth, and I'm very proud of it,"

Gail said. A part of the Buffalo State ath letics is the

womens athletes and no better a person cou ld represent them than Gail. Style, femini ty and

sensitivity are all combined traits Gail possesses. Maturity hasn't been mentioned and it's the most

important aspect. M iss Maloney demands the most an individual can give. "I do that for the

sake of other players who are there to play good, sound basketball. That's not to say that the girls

don't have a good time. They joke around during practice, but when it comes down to it,

they all do their work." When it comes down to it, that's all Gail wants.

MEN'S ATHLETIC DIRECTOR

"Sports editors make al l the determinations for athletic publications," says Fred Hartrick.

Well, here is the publicity Mr. Hartrick and athletes that I hope you' ll enjoy, you

sincerely deserve it. Sports programs, coaches, players, and

administrations that are successful aren't always publicized in their loca l newspapers

and television stations. There has been a consistent bias on other schoo ls rather than

immediate surrounding areas, meaning Buffalo State.

Covering our Buff State athletes publicly is up against a partiality, such as "old time

thinking" or "their own alma mater." The power of the press seems to have repeated Iy

ignored Buffa lo State athletics and it's disgusting. Replied Mr. Hartrick, coord inator

of our mens ath letic program "This is the best sports year B.S.C has had in 4b years." We haven't had the coverage other colleges (Can isus, St. Bonnys, Syracuse - please no

more.) have had. " In the 70's, a writer for the press would attend all or most · of our

games and write about us." Recently the athleti~ department has had to

~ ca ll in all sto ries and give them the "blow by blow" only to discover never making it

public. Well guys when our Booster club is organized and in high gear there will be

more and more and more done and said for our beautiful State athletes. But, until then if

you don't see any write·~ps or reports on our school, call in and voice your opinion.

Mr. Hartrick and the sports staff wou ld be most grateful for you r support.

Mr. A. Gl imse

Yes, all you college fans, there is more to Buffalo State than books and beer! Elms is proud to present a cross-section of some of ... the interesting and exciting groups alive on campus. Let's take a glimpse of those groups in action.

Page 205: The Elms 1981 - CORE

Geoscience Club The Geoscience Club consists of interested Geology and

non-Geology majors. At their informal meetings fund raisers are discussed. They have held various fund-raisers such as white elephant sales and bake sales. The money that is collected is used to cover expenses for learning filled field trips or to buy lab and field equipment. In the past the Geoscience Club has ventured to Vermont, New Hampshire, South Ontario and the adirondacks. This spring the Geoscience has hopes to visit Canada. On these field trips, interested students study rock formations and practice mapping.

In their leisure time Geoscience Club relaxes with Halloween parties, Christmas parties and social events. Whether in the fields looking for minerals or in the Pub looking for beer, the Geoscience Club always has a good time.

Spanish Club

The Spanish Club is organized to encourage Hispanic Culture. This year Spanish Club gathered for a Spanish Christmas Dinner party. Everyone brought a different dish. Vanous times of the year Spanish Club holds "Lunch Time Conversation". All students interested in speaking the Hispanic Language are invited to enjoy their lunch and participate in a Spanish Conversation. This semester Spanish Club will venture to College Camp for a weekend of a total Hispanic Experience. They are also planning to wine and dine at a Spanish restau rant.

Mix Magazine For years at Buffalo State Mix Magazine has served as an outlet

for the creative energy of its students. The fall 1980 semester saw Mix in a state of hibernation. The potential loss of his publication is being realized by some students on campus. Marcia Mule, John Dolphin, Kate Congdon, and Gary Carrel in particular are attempting to get it started again. Considering Mix has been a device for students to release their creative steam, and a place where people can dare to be different. Its no wonder this has some people on campus wondering what can't be labeled art. What these people don't realize is that if an artist or poet doesn't have a place to display his or her work, there is less of a chance to get feed-back on the quality of their work. This feed-back i~ an important part of our education. I hope this source of feed-back doesn't dry up. This years staff hopes to improve the quality of the publication by being more selective and, broadening the selection prossess to include more students. Marcia is also looking for a new name for Mix and will have renamed it by the time you read this.

The V.A.B. runs a student ga llery on campus to give students experience in hanging and displaying their work. V.A.B. offrs a free figure drawing class on Saturdays to keep students in touch with their drawing ski l ls. They also sponsor guest speakers. Th is year for the first time, the V.A.B. served the students by organizing the first Faculty/Student Art Show and Auct ion. The various artists wil l share their profits with the Visua l and Performing Arts Community. This show w ill do much to promote the artwork of students at Buffalo State Col lege.

New York Public Interest Research Group (N. Y .P .I .R . G .) N. Y.P.I.R.C. , inc. is a statewide student/citizen action

organization. They are dedicated to environmental preservation, consumer protection, government accountability, safe energy and social justice. Students from N.Y.P.I.R.C.'s seventeen campuses work together with a staff of lawyers, researchers, project spec iali sts and lobbyists to achieve positive social change in the public interest. Over the years, students at S.U .C.B. have successfully worked on important issues. Some of these social issues are on toxic chemicals, nuclear power, women's hea lth, standardized testing of child abuse, marijuana reform, and student voting rights. N.Y.P.I.R.C.'s many victories since 1973 show that student power is a reality. .

Record The Record

Buff. State's twice-weekly news publication encompasses anything from student life to world polit ics . This is the year of the new, expanded Record. New technology, innovative ideas, and the continued hard work of its fi fty-member staff have helped to make the Record more successful and competitive than ever before.

Elms Elms yearbook of Buffa lo State attempts to capture the

uniqueness of the year, and save it until you have forgotten what the year was like, and who your fr iends were. The yearbook takes a tremendous amount of work to put together. Yet few students show any interest in its production. It's a shame the design and photography students don't show more interest. It' s a good chance to use the skills these students aquire in cl ass on a practical level. Anybody who has the interest and inclination can contribute. The more help the Elms gets the better the book wi ll be. When peop le complain about the book, or when its coming out, or who wasn't in it, I can only ask, " Where were you, when the book was being done?"

In March A.A.S.O. joined in the fli ght aga inst Sickle Ce ll D isease. They sponsored a Sickle Cel l Dance Marathon. The money raised w il l go to continue further medical research.

In April, Buffa lo State was captivated when A.A.S.O. scheduled its annual Black Arts Festi va l. The Black Arts Festival is a trad ition that was started at S. U.C.B. in 1969. The trad ition was developed in 1970 with the crowning of the "Malika" (black queen) and the presentation of group dancing. Various aspects of black culture were ostentated as dancers and artists exhibi ted their talents. This year students acted out cultural pl ays and guest speakers appeared in the union.
