Educated in Glasgow, she spent the Second World War in the Auxiliary Territorial Service (ATS) overseas, before following a varied and rewarding secretarial career in the UK and Canada. Her father introduced her to the Cairngorms, and she became a hillwalker/scrambler on Scottish hills and in the Canadian Rockies. She continued her childhood interest in books, especially travel and exploration, and became fascinated with the craft of bookbinding. Her husband, Ronald W Clark, was a well-known biographer and mountaineering historian. From 1993 to the present, she generously sponsored the bookbinding competition in memory of her father and mother, Magnus and Janet Soutar, and following her death on 18 February 2008, she has enabled the continuance of the competition for which she held such an affection.
