When the soil absorbs water this will lead to increase, its volume and vice-versa. The swelling,, of soil leads, to structural damage, such as kerbs ,swelling, cracking in borders and reinforced foundation and finally leads to deformation in floors and doors, these deformations, may be light, moderate and heavy, according to the value of swelling. In this research, the expansive soil "that is brought from the State Company, of Geological Survey and Mining " has initial plasticity index (PI) is (98), Liquid, limit (LL) is (160), and plastic limit (PL) is (62). In order to improve the properties of expansive soil, sand column was used with different, diameters (1cm,1.5cm and 2cm) with three sizes of sand (0.850mm, 1.18mm, 2.36mm), each sample done by three types diameter and three sizes of sand. The increasing of diameter, of sand column and size of sand used will decrease free swell and swell, pressure. Keywords: Stone column, Expansive soil, Free Swelling, Swelling pressure
