Dear SMLS Community,

The focus of this edition of Jubilate is technology. Past editions havehighlighted the impact of this tool on our lives at school. Although the academic implications are obvious, it is also our responsibility to teachsavvy and safe interaction skills. When I was growing up, my parentsknew when I went outside to interact with the world; today all of us can“go outside” without leaving our homes. It is important for our girls torecognize the need for discernment when they “go outside” virtually todetermine safe and credible places to visit. You will read more aboutthese advancements from alumna Kristy Elik ‘89 as she reflects onchanges since her time at SMLS.

During the spring months we have embarked on a major shift in creatingthe structure that supports our use of technology. The faculty and girlswill engage in a new Learning Management System (LMS) where theywill interact seamlessly. Parents will receive all school communicationthrough the new website which, in the secure site, will recognize themwhen they log in!

Information from our recent Parent Survey has assisted in the development of aspects of the new interactive site. Our virtual presencethrough the new website will also reflect our dynamic school. The workof our IT Department under the leadership of Director Greg Baschuk has been extraordinary. Members of our community have also engagedin the planning and development, and we are all waiting in anticipation of the launch of the new systems in the fall.

It has been a remarkable spring. We held three Closings, saw our firstclass of Preschool girls move to JK, and said farewell to our 43 grads.

We are well into summer and are already looking forward to next September!

Warm regards,

Message from Head of School

1. When were you at SMLS?From 1997-2003 (Grade 8 to OAC, in the double cohort).

2. What comes to mind when I say SMLS?Fond memories in a nurturing environment that was full of opportunities, resources and support – a wonderful place to learn and grow.

3. What is a great memory from SMLS? Without getting too nostalgic as I approach the end of my PhD, what comes to mind first is Graduation Day. It was a time where we reflected on our years at SMLS while making plans for our future. I find myself in a similar situation now.

4. What have you achieved since SMLS that you are proud of?My post-graduate education. I completed an Honours Degree in Life Science at Queen’s University and then continued on to Graduate School in the Department of Pharmacologyand Toxicology where I am currently in the process of completing my Doctoral Degree. I would have to say that it is the journey that I am most proud of – full of hard work, determination and challenges that I have had to overcome. If I had to provide a specific accomplishment, I was very honoured to have been awarded the Canadian Institute of Health Research Frederick Banting and Charles Best Canada Graduate Scholarship Doctoral Award for research excellence in the health sciences. This award provided me with the valuable experience of traveling to national and international conferences, including three separate scientific meetings overseas in Brussels, Prague and Sydney.

5. How did SMLS shape who you are?I was involved in extracurricular activities that equipped me with skills that I still use today. Competitive sports taught me the importance of a healthy and active lifestyle, something that I continue both personally as an avid runner, and professionally in my research that focuses, in part, on the prevention of cardiovascular disease. Volunteering at OTMH taught me the importance of being involved with and giving back to your community. Finally, the rigorous and advanced schoolwork prepared me for university and gave me the tools I needed to succeed – fostering and developing my lifelong learning.

6. Have you stayed connected with SMLS community?Yes, I have built lifelong friendships with some of the girls at SMLS and have come back to visit the school on numerous occasions, including to give a presentation to the Grad Seminar class.

Oh, The Places They’ve Been

This past winter our Alumnae Executive launched profiles ofMonthly Millies on their Facebook page. Luz Iglesias ’97 had thepleasure of interviewing several of her SMLS sisters, and in thisissue, you’ll have the chance to read more of their stories.

For our first Monthly Millies feature, Luz caught up with Tina MAIOTwofoot ‘03.

“SMLS taughtme to be

well-roundedand to take

advantage of opportunities.”

Jubilate - Spring/Summer 2013 3

Sarah SHORNEY Baeumler ‘95

1. When were you at SMLS?I started SMLS in 1982 and was almost a “lifer”! I tooka brief stopover at the Appleby gates but soon realizedI was always going to be a Millies girl!

2. What house were you in?Cartier-Vanier – green was always a better colour on me!

3. What comes to mind when I say SMLS?The little white house – I may be dating myself here but that’s the first image that always pops into my head.

4. What is a great memory from SMLS?As cheesy as it sounds – becoming Games Captain. When I was a little girl I used to look up to the Prefectswith such admiration. They wore those red blazers and had self-confidence, poise, and a true sense of school spirit. It is a tradition that I hope continues for many more years.

5. What have you achieved since SMLS that you are proud of?My family – I have an amazing husband of 9 years and 4 beautiful children. I have made many career choicesin my life, not all of which have been successful, but at the end of the day, I always have the love and support of my family. There is no better accomplishment than that!

6. What was a difficult thing you had to overcome to achieve that? All women know that juggling a career and family is one of the greatest feats a woman can accomplish. There is no easy answer and no textbook rules to follow. We simply do what we can, cross our fingers, and with a little help and an insane amount of luck, we somehow make it through! As parents, and especially mothers, sometimes you have to be willing to follow a different path. At times, I looked at my education and the possibility for further career advancements and wondered if I was missing out on certain opportunities. I would be lying if I didn’t admit to some days wishing my life was simpler and that I had more time for myself.

7. How did SMLS shape who you are? Many alumnae would probably have a fabulous answer for this question but mine is pretty straightforward: SMLS taught me how to be a happy, productive and successful member of my community. With the recent launch of our family foundation (Baeumler Family Foundation for Kids –BFF) my husband and I are focusing our efforts on giving back to our community and to children in particular. I truly believe that SMLS helps shape our daughters to be happy, well-adjusted kids with strong coping strategies. In today’s society, this is invaluable.

8. Have you stayed connected with SMLS community? My daughter Charlotte started at SMLS in JK and the first time I saw her in her tunic I knew that we would always be part of the SMLS community. My role now has changed from student, to alumna, to parent and possibly one day to grandparent – this is a community I hope to grow old in.

Kirsten Call ‘98

1. When were you at SMLS?I started in Grade 6 in 1990, and graduated in 1998.

2. What house were you in?Cartier-Vanier.

3. What comes to mind when I say SMLS?Home. Having moved to Vancouver seven years ago, I sometimes go without seeing Oakville for a very longtime, but whenever I go back I always make a point of driving by SMLS. Whenever I see kids around Vancouver wearing a school uniform, I have to admit to feeling a little homesick.

4. What is a great memory from SMLS?I remember the very first time I walked into SMLS. I was 10 years old and my mother had dropped me off in the parking lot. I had no idea where to go, so naturally I went through The Front Door – and straight into Nicholas Hall. Faced with cases of historical artifacts, portraits of principals past, and wooden panelled walls, I remember feeling absolutely terrified!

5. What have you achieved since SMLS that you are proud of?Seven years ago I took a leap, quit my job and moved out to BC, and haven’t looked back! Since then I’ve gone back to school and become a graphic designer. Two years ago, along with six others, I started The Red Colt Equestrian Farm Co-op in Richmond, BC.

Taking over this small and rather humble acreage, and turning it into a viable farm has been one of the biggest and the most rewarding challenges of my life. I’ve learned how to build fences, work power tools, maintain pastures and manage the needs and well-being of 13 horses. I also have my own mare named Mystery, who I’ve trained myself since I bought her as a 4-year old.

6. What was a difficult thing you had to overcome to achieve that?I’d say overcoming a lot of doubt. Just being able to find a way to do what makes me happy (which for me was always horses, the outdoors and art) was, and still is a process, even if that meant taking some risksalong the way.

7. How did SMLS shape who you are?I had some amazing teachers at St. Mildred’s and I truly wouldn’t be the person I am today without them. Teachers like Dr. Swayze, Mr. Smith, Mrs. Collins and many others really pushed and encouraged me. Even in my 30’s, I still hope they would be proud of me.

Going to St. Mildred’s was also a very different high school experience than most. You can’t really describeit to someone who has never gone there, and it’s something that perhaps only other “Old Girls” understand. It doesn’t matter what path you’ve taken in life or where you are — you’ll somehow always be a “Millie”.

8. Have you stayed connected with SMLS community? I try to keep tabs on my friends from SMLS and what they’re up to. I wish I could go to an Alumnae Brunch sometime!

It doesn’t matter what path you’ve taken in life or where you are – you’ll somehow

always be a “Millie”.

Dr. Denise Sum MD ’03

1. When were you at SMLS?Between 1990-2003 (Grade 1 to OAC).

2. What house were you in?Cartier-Vanier.

3. What comes to mind when I say SMLS?Off the bat, the tunic/kilt and lovely Linbrook Road.

4. What is a great memory from SMLS?Definitely the yearly traditions like Michaelmas, the Terry Fox Run and Sports Day.

5. What have you achieved since SMLS that you are proud of?Surviving medical school!

6. What was a difficult thing you had to overcome to achieve that?Perhaps the greatest challenge was not letting medicine take over my life, and maintaining balance through outside interests (like writing, dance, volunteering, etc.). With the long hours, call shifts, and studying, it’s often hard to practice the healthy lifestyle that we encourage our patients to have. But over time you realize that you also have to take care of yourself.

7. How did SMLS shape who you are?SMLS gave me unique opportunities such as participating in the exchange program with Osaka International Owada High School, which influenced me greatly and fueled my love of travel. I have been back to visit Japan twice since then! SMLS also provided a learning environment that was both challenging and supportive, which helped prepare me well for post-secondary studies. I was also lucky to have some wonderful teachers, like Dr. Swayze and Mrs. Tew.

8. Have you stayed connected with SMLS community? I am still in touch with some classmates and my former carpooling buddy!

SMLS also provided alearning environment

that was both challenging and

supportive, whichhelped prepare

me well for post-secondary

studies.

It can be our little secret.Since last November 2012, SMLS Café hasproudly offered a variety of Fresh & Fast

healthy meals, prepared in our house for your house.

6 St. Mildred’s-Lightbourn School

It’s been several (okay, many) years since I proudly posedfor grad photos outside St. Jude’s Anglican Church theday my tenure at SMLS ended. Since that milestone day,I’ve visited the school’s campus a number of times forevents like Traditions of Christmas, Alumnae Associationmeetings and, most recently, an inspiring evening hearing awesome speakers at a Power of Women event.

Every time I go back and meander through those hallowed halls, I marvel at the amazing opportunitiesthat St. Mildred’s is continuing to provide for its girls.

Sure, SMLS has always been on the cutting edge of technology, but who’s kidding who? When I graduated in1989, the most radically inventive technology available for classrooms had to be overhead projectors. I don’twant to date myself unnecessarily, but the internet as weknow it today simply didn’t exist—and neither did digitalcameras, cell phones or laptops. No memory sticks orrecordable CDs for us… we made mixed tapes of all ourfavourite Duran Duran songs. In all fairness, though, inan attempt to arm us for the information age, our teacherMr. Tsotsos made a valiant effort to teach us about basicprogramming (remember floppy disks and the dreaded‘syntax error’, girls)? Yikes.

What a difference today. SMLS has come a long way, baby, and not only in the realm of technology. From the school’s unique Global Studies program, which integrates academic studies with relevant career and life experiences in the real world, to its state-of-the-artThree Sisters Studio Theatre, where students can participate in every aspect of staging a live production, to its outstanding athletic facilities, including a fullyequipped double gymnasium, two soccer fields and a fitness room, SMLS girls are invited and encouraged to discover and cultivate who they are and where theyshine—a priceless advantage in a changing and competitive world.

It wasn’t until I had a recent opportunity to visit a Grade 3classroom, though, that I really understood the incrediblelevels of technology that are being made available to St. Mildred’s-Lightbourn School students.

There sat a handful of little Millies, crisscross applesauceon the floor, as their teacher Ms. Pickering wrote on theclassroom SMART Board. And on every desk? Not papersand pencils and textbooks, but a shiny MacBook Pro. Ihave to admit, I’m a little bit jealous!

Oh, ThePlacesYou’ll Go!We invited one of our alum to comment on what she witnessedwhen she recently stepped into aGrade 3 classroom.

Jubilate - Spring/Summer 2013 7

“SMLS has always been devoted to incorporating the latest innovations to design and enrich our curriculum,” explainsDorothy Byers, Head of School. “The goal is for students to have powerful learning tools at their disposal that allowthem to quickly and easily locate, acquire and create knowledge.”

Dorothy is quick to acknowledge that teaching girls to safely navigate the brave new world that is the “net” can bechallenging.

“It’s like sending your kids ‘outside’to play, but ‘outside’, in this case, may be filled with danger,” she says. “So one of our most important teachingstrategies revolves around the appropriate, responsibleuse of technology.”

In fact, as early as 2000, St. Mildred’s introduced laptops to girls in the SeniorSchool. At that time, in one ofher former positions at theschool, Dorothy managed thedevelopment of the programas it grew through the grades, and in 2006, all the senior girlswere using MACs in their learning. Now the youngest Millies in Preschool are using SMART Tables!

Today, students create and collaborate using a range of powerful learning tools including MacBook Pros, iPads,SMART Boards, which are interactive whiteboards, and Epson Brightlink Interactive Projectors.

And the technological revolution continues at SMLS. One of the most exciting new features in the school is the 21CDC (21st Century Digital Classroom), an interactive classroom that allows wireless real-time collaboration between students from their devices to multiple displays throughout the room.

This amazing space boasts a 90” HD Epson Brightlink interactive projector and four 27” iMac desktops, which areused in conjunction with MacBooks and iPads, all running the latest IOS and Mac OSX platforms.

There’s more to come. For the 2013-14 academic year, the school is adding a 60” HD video teleconferencing system tothe room, allowing for real-time video collaboration with people from around the world, all in stunning HD. Anotherneat addition to the room will be digital art frames, which will rotate photos, artwork and inspiring quotes everytwenty minutes.

It’s not all about bells and whistles, though.

“The goal of the technology program at SMLS isn’t to simply fill the school with the latest, greatest products,” explains Greg Baschuk, Director of IT. “It’s more to teach the girls the skills to be able to adapt quickly to new technology. It’s about preparing them for a future that will require extremely nimble learning skills.”

That teaching begins early at SMLS.

Page 10: The Educational Journey of Lifetime JUBILATE€¦ · SMLS Cooperative Program 9 For All That You Do, We Thank You 10 2013 Outstanding Alumna Award 11 Performing Arts in Review 12

In the Junior School, girls collaborate and learn using a SMART Table, which is a multi-touch, multiuser interactivelearning centre for students of all abilities and ages. Designed to encourage collaboration, teamwork, discussion andconsensus building, the table gives all students a gathering place to explore digital lessons.

In the Senior School, technology is used to create flipped classrooms. This is an opportunity for students to engage in “learning” for homeworkand then come to class to do what would traditionally be done for homework, with the benefit of having teacher support at the ready.

Teachers have a cutting-edge advantage, too, using SMART Boards topresent lessons and consolidate learning, and are able to assign studentstheir own blogs for the Global Studies trips , which helps classes “travel”with the girls when they are learning outside of the building.

And next year, teachers will be able to use the school’s Learning Management System (LMS) to track the development of student work, and some courses will be taught online so the girls have an opportunity to engage in a new and very 21st century learning environment, with synchronous and asynchronous learning taking place in a virtual classroom environment

All work and homework is posted on the LMS so that students who areaway can stay on top of what is taking place in class. Class notes aregenerated and posted as well as due dates and assignments, plus linksto resources. This means a smaller environmental impact because lesspaper is used.

What an amazing time to be a Millie! Oh, if only I could go back in time…

SMLS’ Cooperative Education Program

Each year, between 20 and 30 S5 students have the opportunity toparticipate in a one-month experiential work placement programin the GTA or abroad, through our Global Studies program. Thisexperience provides girls with “real world” responsibilities andrewards that are aligned with professional work. Girls can selectfrom a variety of career fields they are interested in pursuing, andthrough their work, they learn and develop important skills thatwill enhance their future employability. At the same time, theyearn Cooperative Education credits.

Such experiential learning opportunities reinforce and build uponwhat they learn in the classroom. It is always wonderful to seegirls upon completion of their placement… amazing growth andself-awareness happens when they step outside of their comfortzone and rise to new challenges. Their confidence grows, andthey see that they truly can take on the world!

Our program offers such variety and is so successful because of the generous and ongoing support of local businesses and professionals who willingly take time out of their busy schedulesto mentor and teach our young women.

“In the past, I had always looked at a career from the practical point of view. From the angle of how

convenient a career is. I considered factors like salary, schedules, education, and demand for the career.

But today, going into a working environment, I learned what it actually means to be passionate

about a career and to love what you do.” – Alexandra Leedale ‘11

“Even beyond learning more about myself during this placement, I also learned how to network, how to ask relevant and thoughtful questions, how to be professional (in my actions, words, and even wardrobe choices), and how to be a valuable employee – traits that will help me

no matter what career or field I choose.”– Kathleen Simpson ‘12

In April, the world celebrated NationalVolunteer Month, and we at SMLS hadthe privilege of honouring our dedicatedvolunteers at a special full-schoolchapel celebration. These generous Millie parents and friends of SMLS givefreely of their time and talents to benefitour girls. Without them, we would not beable to have some of our activities – theygive us so many reasons to be grateful!

During chapel throughout the year, wehave spoken about “bucket dippers” and “bucket fillers”. At this celebration,Dorothy said: “There is no doubt that the individuals we celebrate this morningare all bucket fillers who make it a habitto ask themselves ‘what will I give tothose around me today?’ Thank you foranswering that question by enrichingour community in very significant ways.We are richer for your involvement.”

We had a record number of volunteers at this special celebration, and the girls were thrilled to be able to participatein paying tribute to their wonderful mom and/or dad. Each volunteer received from their daughter a card with a special pin to signify how special they are to us.

Special congratulations to the recipient of the 4th Annual Distinguished Service Award – Karen Holloway! Karen hadseveral nominations for having gone above and beyond expectations, being a positive role model, and consistentlydemonstrating enthusiasm, reliability, collaboration and commitment to SMLS Core Values – Respect, Integrity, Innovation, Commitment and Excellence. Karen has been a volunteer with SMLS for over 14 years in a wide variety ofdifferent roles and responsibilities. As one of her nominators said: “SMLS is a better place because of extraordinaryvolunteers like Karen.” Thanks to all those who took the time to nominate someone.

For All That You Do, We Thank You

Some of our favourite quotes about volunteers:

• “Knowing that you are helping to create a peaceful world and a safer planet is only a fraction of the pride that a volunteer should feel every time they lend a helping hand.” – D. Adonis

• “To volunteer is to contribute your goodness and works to humanity unselfishly, without seeking any rewards.” – D. Adonis

• “Volunteerism is a skill to pass down to your children as tradition, but more important, it’s a gift for a lifetime.” - Author unknown

Congratulations to all our wonderful nominees – Cherilyn Carson (last year’s recipient), Heather and Ed Burcher (missing from photo), Dianne Lemieux and Karen Holloway pictured with Janet Pickell, Chair of the DSA Nominating Committee.

This special award, presented for the first time atthe 2012 Alumnae Brunch, celebrates an alumnawho has stood out in her life’s work, meeting thefollowing criteria. She has:

• Made significant contributions to her profession, the community or the arts;

• Been recognized for her work;• Volunteered extensively;• Expanded the role of women in society;• Shown exemplary leadership;• Been active in her involvement with and

in support of SMLS and/or the SMLS Alumnae Association.

Our 2013 “Marvelous Millie” is Janet Stewart, QC’60. According to Janet, “practicing law is what I was meant to do.” In current educational terms, wewould say that Janet is in her element – she loveswhat she does and she is good at it.

Janet was a student at St. Mildred’s College, andafter completing her BA at Trinity College, U of T,she studied at Osgoode Hall Law School and wascalled to the Bar in 1969. Through answering an adtacked on a notice board, she joined Lerners LLP’sLondon office, and was a curiosity, she says, as awoman practicing law outside government or thecorporate world. “It just wasn’t the norm in thosedays!” she adds.

In the years following, Janet developed a robustpractice in commercial and estate law. As managingpartner, she has been an inspiration and mentor forcountless young lawyers, many of them female. Shewas known for helping them to find balance in theircareers, and says that she noticed an interestingphenomenon: “Because women take time off whenthey have their children, unlike their male counter-parts, they attack their work like gangbusters in their50’s and 60’s –their male counterparts who haveworked consistently are tired and it shows!”

But her legal career is only part of Janet’s life. She has volunteered for countless community organizations, including SMLS, serving on the Board of Governors. She has been recognized by the legal community through the Lexpert ZenithAward, the Law Society Medal, and The Women’s Law Association of Ontario President’s Award.

Most recently, Janet received the The Queen Elizabeth the Second Diamond Jubilee Medal.

Unfortunately, Janet was unable to join us at this year’s Annual Alumnae Brunch to accept her award, but her nominatorLynda OSBORNE Rickards ’62 proudly accepted the award on her behalf.

2013 Outstanding Alumna Award

Janet has practiced law for over forty years in London, Ontario. From 1991 to 2007 she was the Managing Partner of her firm,

a position rarely held by women at that time, and led its expansion in both London and Toronto.

Janet has been honoured as a Woman of Distinction by the YMCA. She is the recipient of numerous awards including

The Law Society Medal, Huron University College Medal of Distinction, the Governor General’s Caring Canadian Award

and Queen Elizabeth II Diamond Jubilee Medal. In 2009 she was admitted to the Order of Ontario.

Janet believes in the importance of social responsibility, something she was introduced to not only by her family, but by the Sisters of the Church of St. Mildred’s College.

Her advice to SMLS students:

Super Success for SWAT 771

This trifecta of the most prestigious awards available within FIRST Robotics werewon by SWAT 771 at the Greater Toronto Regional. This may represent the only timein history that the same team has won all three awards at the same event.

The team in St. Louis, MO

1. SMLS science and math teacherand robotics mentor Mrs. Sarah Silswas presented with the WoodieFlowers Award in recognition of her outstanding work with not only the team but also with others internationally. This award recognizes an individual who hasimpressively motivated a teamthrough communication while alsochallenging students to be clear and

succinct in recognizing the value of communication.

2. Student Ankita Sharma, S5, wasplaced on the “Dean’s List” in honour of FIRST Founder DeanKamen. This award celebrates anoutstanding student leader whosepassion for, and effectiveness at, attaining FIRST ideals is exemplary.

3. The team received The RegionalChairman’s Award, the most prestigious FIRST award presentedat a regional event. This award wascreated to maintain FIRST’s focus onchanging culture in ways that wouldinspire greater levels of respect andhonour for science and technology,as well as encourage more of today’syouth to become scientists, engineersand technologists.

What a year it was for SWAT 771, our robotics team! The girls and their coaches and mentors received incrediblerecognition in the FIRST community and proudly represented SMLS and Oakville in Canada and across the border.

As the oldest Oakville team (founded in 2002) and one of only four Canadian all girls’ teams, SWAT is recognized by the international FIRST community. Beyond their longevity and numerous awards throughout the years, the team also hosts an annual symposium that welcomes teams from both Canada and the US; it is the largest of such learningevents in the GTA and beyond. A testament to their reputation, the team was invited to the inaugural Western CanadianRegional tournament by FIRST Canada as a role model for the many rookie teams in attendance. The guiding principleof FIRST is “gracious professionalism”; the girls are recognized for their unfailing support of others.

SWAT competed at three regional events this year and was recognized at each for various exemplary achievements. Atboth the New York City and the Western Canadian events, the girls received the Kleiner, Perkins, Caufield, and ByersEntrepreneurship Award for their top-notch business plan. And then at the Greater Toronto Regional West, the teamwas overwhelmed. In three different categories, they received the top awards and as finalists, are considered at theWorld Championship in St. Louis. Other highlights for the team this year were being ranked 4th in New York, becomingthe first all-girls’ team to lead an alliance in FIRST Robotics history, and mentoring a single-person team in Calgary.

Congratulations Class of 2013!

Congratulations to our latest graduates – our newest alumnae! This special group of 43 girls will be heading off to universities and collegesthroughout Canada, the United States, England and Scotland, many withprestigious scholarships. We are so proud of their successes here at SMLS,and wish them all the best on the next part of their educational journey!

Head Girl Madison Graves delivered an eloquent valedictorian address, saying “SMLS has given us the opportunity to be engaged in the world. Here, we have entered a theatre as actors in an improvisation, on a stagewhere community, passion and growth are our shared experience. This place goes far beyond the strong academics. This place is our secondhome, endowed with the ability to take a group of girls and create an orchestra of confident and passionate young women.” And to the futuregrads in the audience she said “The Millie experience is one that will act as the foundation for your future journeys throughout the course of yourlives. Treasure each moment you have here, and trust that this communitywill bring out the best in you.”

By mid-March, 100% of our grads had received

their post-secondary acceptances – over 30 received morethan one! This is an all-time best; the success is attributed to the finemarks they achieved during their S5 year. This is also a testament to the design of our innovative program, where our S5 is essentially an “additional” Grade 12 year, allowinggirls to glean the benefits from our exceptional Global Studies experiences.

Grad Year in Review

Our grads had a very busy and productive year – theyshould be very proud of all they accomplished individuallyand as a group!

The Grads Giving Backcampaign was a huge success under the supervision of Ms. SheridaScott, S6 Coordinator, and student directors Cassandra McMeekan andNicole Spadotto. Theseyoung women assumedtheir roles with confidenceand ease, leading thegraduating class in a number of communityservice events, includingtaking part in Home SuiteHope’s Empty Bowls event, organizing a memorialchapel in memory of the

14 young women who lost their lives in the MontrealMassacre, organizing fun events to raise funds for awomen’s shelter, preparing and serving dinner to 80needy families at Kerr Street Ministries, and raisingmoney for Golden Rescue and The Oakville Humane Society.

Under the direction of Victoria Valliere, The OakvilleTeens in Action held a movie night to raise money forlocal youth.

And our student body leaders, our Prefects, led, inspiredand encouraged fellow Millies across all grades to be astrong and involved school community.

Says Ms. Scott: “It has been fabulous watching the girlsgive back to the local community and realize the truevalue in helping to make the world a better place. Theyare superb ambassadors for SMLS and as always, I amvery proud of our grads.”

Mrs. Karen Hansen-Cowper, Head of Senior School, saidit best at closings: “This educational journey of a lifetimehas bestowed upon each of you the powerful tool of a curious mind… and you are about to take that out into thewider world with you and I guarantee, it will set you apart.

At SMLS, we celebrate curiosity and I believe it is a facet of the skillset that is developed in each Millie. It issomething you came to our school with and somethingwe continued to encourage in you…the confidence to ask good questions, the drive to search for insights andmeanings and respectfully probe beneath the surface. This is a gift graduates leave our school with. Your teachers, coaches, Advisors and mentors have inspiredyou to continue to be inquisitive... to inquire and enquire...to pry, ask and dissect. As Millies, you have been asked todemonstrate your understanding and have been pushedto tackle intellectual challenges and problem-solve every day. The ‘right answer’ is rarely dispensed in theclassrooms or on the fields of SMLS where students have questions turned back to them to pursue further. And they do.

So, Class of 2013, I encourage you to take what you havegained along your journey at SMLS – that curious mind –and employ it on the new paths you forge in your life. Letit guide you, to some degree, to explore what lies ahead. You know that curiosity, as it has been developed in eachof you, will make you stronger, smarter, more successfuland happier.

As you leave us, you leave behind some great legaciesand wonderful contributions to the community at large. Girls, it has truly been our pleasure to work with andteach you.”

At this year’s Grad Breakfast in May,

all 43 grads were officiallywelcomed into the

Alumnae Association. Each girl received a special silver pin to

symbolize SMLS sisterhood. The girls accompanied by their

parents had the pleasureof hearing keynote

speaker Luz Iglesias ’97share her experiences on

Each year, I find it amazing to hear about the accomplishments of the school and how it’s meeting and exceeding its goals forimprovements to the curriculum, the campus, the methods ofteaching and learning.

I find it equally amazing to hear about the accomplishmentsof the girls who are excelling in academics, sports, music, the arts. These same girls compete with so many otherschools throughout the country in all these areas, and moreoften than not, come out on top! Their successes make itloud and clear that SMLS is a place where girls truly canexcel in all fields. What a testament to my alma mater!

Most of all though, I find it amazing that attending schoolclosings transports me back in time to my own school closings,

and particularly, graduation… seeing the newest alumnae withthe same excitement, nervousness, tears, laughter… parents

feverishly trying to get photos of their girls with gown and cap andtheir close friends… hearing Mrs. Worboys whisper “breathe” as

they file into the gym… watching as their name is called and they walk across the stage and hug Mrs. Byers with tear-filledeyes and accept their diploma.

The teachers and school building have changed since I was a student here, but what remains strong and evident is that genuine feeling of family. I felt it as a student, and now as analumna. It’s that feeling that everyone truly cares for one another, and wishes each other success. It’s also that feelingof wishing grads the best in their post-SMLS endeavourswhile at the same time being so sad to see them go. And thegirls don’t know it yet, but we alumnae know that they will remain close for many more years to come, even though theirpaths are diverging right now.

On behalf of all SMLS alumnae, congratulations Class of 2013and welcome to the SMLS Alumnae Association! We look forward to watching where you go and what you do next. Weknow you will amaze us! And remember to keep in touch!

Wishing everyone a safe, relaxing, happy summer and I look forward to another year with SMLS.

A huge thanks again to all our donors who made this dream a reality!

“I have many fond memories of St. Mildred’s College, where I attended as a boarder from 1955 until 1961. It was a small school then, about 220 girls, and asboarders, we developed life skills and lasting friendships.

The Sisters who owned and managed the school taughtme self-discipline, perseverance and hard work, which I carried into my adult life. These attributes contributed

to the success I experienced in my personal and professional life.

I have decided to include theschool in my will to contribute toa bursary fund so that another girlwith less fortunate means mayhave the same opportunities.”

“Millies are the most amazing creative girls who are wonderful friends and the best studentsa teacher could ever have. On behalf of all theteachers in the Junior School, we hope you havea wonderful summer and look forward to hearing about all the things you did when wewere not looking!”

– Ms. Irene McRae, Head of Junior School

School’s Out forSummer!Congratulations to each and every student on asuccessful year, and we wish all our families asafe and happy summer.

Junior School Closing The end of the year marked a very moving and bittersweet time for Junior School – the retirement offour much-beloved teachers: Ms. Susan Carnegie, Mrs. Vicky McQueen, Ms. Diana Osborne and Mrs. Claudia Kotkiewicz (see photo below). Collectivelythese four wonderful educators have been at SMLS forjust over 90 years! We will miss them all and wish them the very best as they embark on their next adventures.

In the spring, the girls celebrated the retirees by writing a special book called What Retiring TeachersDo When No One is Looking, based on an actual bookcalled What Teachers Do When No One is Looking.Apparently the teachers will not need to worry aboutfilling their time, as they’ll be busy “extreme couponing, going to Vegas, scribbling outside the lines and doingart pieces and not putting their names on it, all thewhile drinking coffee and singing Blessed are the Pure in Heart”.

So we asked the girls What Do Millies Do When No One is Looking! Much of what they say is breakingsome rule we have at the school or in their lives. True to form, they break these rules in interesting andcreative ways. Says Ms. McRae: “Do you really knowwhat Millies do when no one is looking? People thinkthey are creative thinkers, caring friends and wonderfulstudents who follow the rules, and they are but... have Igot a surprise for teachers and maybe some parents too.Millies are truly are a female force to reckoned with!”

We also wish Ms. Lyndsey Pickering (see photo above)the very best as she heads back to school and venturesinto a new field.

Middle Level ClosingThis year we celebrated our firstMiddle Level closing ceremonies, which marked the end of the inaugural year of a fulsome program that addresses a key transition phase of learning andlife. Our S1 class of 2013 received a special memento to mark theirmoment of moving into SeniorSchool – a pin to be worn proudlyon their new blazers.

In her address, Ms. Robin Toffolo,Director of the Middle Level, said:“Ladies, the work that you havestarted and the positive work ethicthat you have established are important stepping-stones to achieving greatness in life. In September I told you that I believethat we are all ordinary people whohave the ability to accomplish extraordinary things. Today, I amusing Dr. Seuss’s book Oh the PlacesYou’ll Go to encourage each of you tofind the success that lies within you.Continue to search for your passion.Challenge the people around you andnever give up when you believe in a cause. Continue on the road to extraordinary. I know that you will be brilliant!”

We bid a fond farewell to Ms. CaitlinDobie, who has left SMLS to pursueother interests, and wish her all thebest in her future endeavours.

“It is a success – one only needs to visit the Middle Level hub to see learning in action, or to read the survey results and comments fromboth our girls and their parents. Transition times can be challenging;our girls are realizing our school goalto make this transition smooth.”

- Mrs. Dorothy Byers, Head of School

Senior School Closing This year, our girls' academic excellence wasrecognized as they stepped into national competitions and the world of accreditation. For the first time students wrote the DELF examination, which enables university study in French as a first language, and all sevenparticipants scored in the A to A+ range. Millies scored high on university level chemistry and mathematics competitionsand contests. They shone at leadership conferences and chatted with Mr. Vice President Al Gore at an environmental conference. These are just some of the examples of stellar recognition of learning in external forums.

This summer we say goodbye to both Mrs. Robyn Hahn and Ms. AliciaHawryluk '00 and wish them all the best along their journeys.

“To really make your mark, to reallybe noticed and stand out from othervery successful people, kindnesscan make all the difference in the world. It does take effort, nodoubt. And it has to come from agenuine concern for others withnothing expected in return. Butwe can all do it, no matter whereour place is in the world is. And I am thrilled that we haveMillies and Millie parents thathave chosen to stand out because we, the entire SMLScommunity, benefit.”

- Jess Mann, Chair of the Board
