WATER WOES PLAGUE THE WEST Thanks to 14 years of drought fueled by climate change, and increased demand from cities, agriculture, and the oil and gas industry, Lake Mead is drying up.
THE WORLD ICE IS MELTING
Above, the extent of Arctic sea ice in September 2012, when it reached an all-time low compared to its average minimum extent over the past few decades (shown in the yellow line). Because the Arctic is warming twice as rapidly as the rest of the planet, climate change is occurring here faster than anywhere else

ECOLOGICAL TREASURES IN PERIL
Fuel oil leaks from a Chinese coal ship after it become grounded on Australia's Great Barrier Reef in April 2010. Due to the warming and increasing acidification of the oceans, the reef has lost half its coral cover over the past three decades, and what's left could be halved again in the next decade.
OCEANS ARE GETTEING MORE
WARMER AND MORE ACIDIC
A resident clears dead fish from the Fuhe river in Wuhan, a city in central China's Hubei province, in September 2013 after large amounts of dead fish began to be surface early the day before. Sustained rises in water temperature are to blame for many fish die-offs like these around the world, scientists say.
GREENLAND ICE SHEETS MELTING
FASTER Water flows on part of the glacial ice sheet that covers about 80 percent of Greenland in July 2013. Warmer temperatures in recent decades have had an effect on the glaciers here, but also have altered the ways in which the local populace farms, fish, hunt.

OZONE: Ozone is a gas that is naturally present in our atmosphere. Each ozone molecule contains three atoms of oxygen and is denoted chemically as O3. The stratospheric region with the highest ozone concentration is commonly known as the “Ozone layer.
Why do we care about atmospheric ozone?
The sun UV radiation, which has a shorter wavelength
than visible light, is responsible for sunburn and other
adverse health effects. Fortunately for life on Earth, a
gas in the atmosphere called ozone screens most
harmful UV radiation. Depletion of ozone layer however,
can cause the following health problems, particularly for
people who spend substantial time outdoors:
Skin cancer and other skin disorders Cataracts and other eye damage Immune suppression
Types of UV Radiations:
UV-A GOOD FOR HEALTH
UV-B DANGEROUS UV-C HIGHLY DANGEROUS
The Ozone let UV-A pass its layers but stops and filters dangerous UV-B and UV-C which are known CARCINOGEN (Cancer causing).
What cause Ozone layer to deplete? When Chlorofluorocarbons (CFCs) and other chemicals as
refrigerants, insulating foams, and solvents migrate into the upper atmosphere, these chemicals absorb UV radiation, break apart, and react with ozone where UV radiation would break them down into chlorine monoxide (ClO) and other
ozone-destroying compounds.
UV rays and Human health:
Medical research has shown that overexposure to the sun’s UV
radiation can contribute to serious health problems. Each
year, for example, more than 1 million cases of skin cancer
are diagnosed in the United States, and one person dies every
hour from skin cancer.
1-Melanoma
Malignant melanoma, the most deadly form of skin
cancer.
OZONE LAYER
Will it helps?
Ozone is essential to life because it
shields the Earth from the damaging, even lethal, ultraviolet radiation emitted by the sun
On 16 September, the World celebrates International Day for the Preservation of the Ozone Layer. The date commemorates the signing of the Montreal Protocol, which
sought to reduce atmospheric levels of ozone depleting substances. The ozone layer protects us from the harmful effects of certain wavelengths of ultraviolet (UV) light from the Sun. Harmful ultraviolet (UV) rays cause skin cancers, sunburns and
premature aging of the skin, Cataracts, blindness and other eye diseases.
One atom of chlorine can destroy as many as
100,000 atoms of ozone during its life.
Pg-07
2-SUN BURN:
Perhaps the best-known
consequences of excessive UVR exposure are erythema, or sunburn.
3-CATARACTS:
Another long-term effect of
UVR exposure is the formation of cataracts.
4-PRE-MATURE AGEING OF SKIN:
Chronic exposure to the sun
causes changes in the skin
called actinic (or solar)
degeneration.
OZONE AND CLIMATE:
Ozone depleting substances (ODSs) such as the CFCs have contributed to increases in global average surface temperature.
As a result of the phase-out schedules of the Montreal Protocol, the global production and use of chlorofluorocarbons (CFCs) and halons has decreased significantly. Scientific Assessment Panel’s 2010 report states that ozone layer is
no longer decreasing and is predicted
to return to pre -1980 values before 2050 at mid -latitudes and a few years later at high latitudes. Concentrations of ozone depleting substances have been
decreasing for over ten years, and are expected to continue to decrease in the future (Taken from USEPA.COM)
PAKISTAN AND OZONE ISSUE: Pakistan does not manufacture any ozone depleting substances. But substances like CFC, HCFC, Methyl bromide etc. is used in different industries e.g. refrigerators, deep freezers, air conditioners (house hold/automobile) and in agriculture. If we consider Pakistan's share in CFCs emissions, the current figures depict extremely meager contribution. Pakistan does
not produce CFCs.Its annual import is 3000 tones. The per capita use of CFCs is only 0.027 KG and her contribution in the global context is practically zero. Even the futuristic estimates of increase in the local use of ODS shall not rise, according to a careful analysis, beyond 5-15% by the year 2030.
Content Taken from-Ozone layer depletion and prevention: From Theory to practice by Abdul Jabbar & Asif Munir A publication of Sustainable Development Policy Institute (SDPI)
Ozone depletion has an
influence on climate change since both ozone and the compounds
responsible for its depletion are
active greenhouse gases.

AL-KARAM TOWEL AND CLIMATE
CHANGE AKTI believes that climate change is an important long-term
issue that justifies global action
AKTI recognizes carbon dioxide emissions are a key contributor to climate change throughout the supply chain as well as the fact that change mitigation is vital to the long-term success of our business and the health and well-being of the people who buy our products. This is why we measured our baseline global climate footprint .Other than we also use environmental friendly Refrigerant gases to minimize the earth ozone depletion.
AL-KARAM TOWEL AND GREEN HOUSE GASES:
We have been tracking our carbon emissions from direct fuel combustion and indirect emissions from electricity for several years. The inventories follow globally-recognized guidelines outlined IPCC. The majority of our emissions result from natural gas and electricity consumption at all of our operated locations. MEASURING OUR IMPACTS:
In 2013, we set a target to reduce Scope greenhouse gas emissions 5% percent by the end as compared to a 2012 baseline. We are proud to announce that we achieved that goal by implementing energy efficiency and conservation programs at our, offices, and in manufacturing plants,
We contributed 0.000001 °C in 2013, and in 2014 we have contributed 0.0000001 °C, an astonishing 9% reduction of GHG emissions
.
Pg-09
AL-KARAM TOWEL OZONE DEPLETING SUBSTANCES:
In AKTI, we use HFCs are the only Refrigerant gas used
instead of chlorofluorocarbons (CFCs) and HCFCs.
Chlorofluorocarbons (CFCs) and HCFCs two substances
being successfully phased out under the Montreal Protocol
because of their ozone-destroying properties. All of these
substances are extremely potent greenhouse gases with a
very high global warming potential (GWP) and HFCs are
controlled under the Kyoto Protocol.
FUTURE PLAN: Our management showing leadership in this area by
completely switches from fluorinated refrigerants to what is
known as “natural refrigerants”. Natural refrigerants are
naturally occurring substances, such as hydrocarbons
(propane), CO2, ammonia, water and air. These substances
can be used as cooling agents in refrigerators and air
conditioners and do not harm the ozone layer.

By planting 20 million trees, the earth and its people will be provided with 260 million more tons of oxygen. Those same 20 million trees will remove 10 million tons of CO2.
DAYLIGHT SAVING INITIATIVE:
AIR CONDITIONER CONDENSATE:
‘AL-KARAM TOWEL WASTAGE CONTROL THEME’
AKTI is showing another major step in its working towards
environmental sustainability by starting WASTAGE CONTROL
THEME in 2014.
The purpose of WASTAGE CONTROL THEME is to monitor
,analyze and minimize the use of unwanted energy
consumption. In the start-up we have identified the following
areas for our project.
DAYLIGHT SAVINGS:
In this area, we have identified 7 areas of our industry which
have either’s don’t need lights in daytime or the contain more
lights than required.
According to the feasibility report, by implementing this
initiative we can able to save around 1% of our energy
consumption.
PRINTERS ON STAND-BY:
An HP/DELL laser printer which is designed for home and office
use will typically use 60 to 70 watts when it is printing, in
standby mode most printers will draw around 5 to 7 watts of
power.
By shut down printer when not in use rather than putting on
stand by we can able to 0.07 KWH/Day for 1 laser printer which
put on stand by for the whole day. By this initiative we can
approximately save around 50 KWH/month.
USE OF AIR CONDITIONER CONDENSATE:
Grey water is becoming increasingly important. As water
becomes an increasingly precious resource using it in a
sustainable way that minimizes waste has become critical.
We have conducted a study in which we find that air
conditioners at generally produce about 0.5 liters condensate
per day. At peak times 1 A/C can produce 1.5 Liters
Condensate. We are using this water for Gardening and for
general washing purposes like Gardening, Cleaning floor and
windows.

AKTI has installed 300 LED tube lights in Air-Jet Looms department. LED lights consume at least 50% less energy as
compared to normal fluorescent lights. LED lights are free from Mercury (Toxic compound).
AKTI has installed new modernly equipped less energy consumable Air Jet Looms with Shuttle less looms. Initially we have replaced 25 looms but in the mid of June, 2015 we will be able to replace all shuttle less with Air-Jet Looms
AKTI has adopted another good practice by introducing a concept of Indoor Plantation in office areas. Research has proved that indoor plantation is essential in workplace for healthy employees.
