Organics recycling—commonly known as composting—is a controlled, aerobic (requiring oxygen) biological process which results in the decomposition of organic materials. This decom-position process occurs naturally in nature. Composting is performed by beneficial microorgan-isms (bacteria, fungi, and other living organisms) which digest the organic residues for food and energy and speed up the decomposition process. Compost is a stable, humus-like material that is free of unpleasant odors, easy to handle, and is a valuable soil and potting media amendment.
Trench composting (http://organicgardening.about.com/od/compost/a/trenchcompost.htm) is the easiest way to compost at home, especially food scraps. Add chopped food scraps to a hole or trench and cover with at least eight inches of soil. This can be done in a garden during fall/winter for spring planting.
Backyard composting (http://www2.epa.gov/recycle/composting-home) can be done through a variety of options. A wide range of commercially available backyard composting bins suitable for home composting are available; bins can also be constructed using readily available materials.
Home digesters (http://www.eco-outfitter.com/p-189-green-cone-solar-digester-system.aspx) are “solar-heated” garden bins (using double-layer plastic to heat) which safely eliminate all cooked and uncooked food waste, including meat, fish, bones, dairy products, vegetables and fruit.
Worm composting or “vermicomposting” (http://compost.css.cornell.edu/worms/basics.html) is a process using worms (“red wigglers”) to convert organic material into a dark rich soil amendment. It presents an opportunity for low cost food scrap diversion.
Home Compost Success• Mix a variety of materials—alternate a layer of “carbon” or dry, brown materials, with a layer
of “nitrogen” or wet, green materials and/or food scraps
• Sprinkle a little water on each layer so that the materials are moist, but not soggy
• Top it off with a thin layer of soil or already finished compost
Adding food scraps: • Always make sure there is adequate carbon (leaves, soiled paper, hay, etc.)
• Always cover food scraps with carbon material & a little soil
• Consider covering with lime if fruit flies become an issue or if animals get into the compost
• Line bottoms of bins with thin wire mesh
COMPOSTING AT HOMEBasic Home Composting Recipe1 to 2 Parts Carbon
• Brown, woody, dry materials such as fallen leaves, sawdust, straw (chopped or shredded)
1 Part Nitrogen • Green, wet materials, such as grass clippings, kitchen scraps, and manures
Moisture • Uniform—like a damp sponge
A Little Soil/Finished Compost • Sprinkle a little on top
Air • Mix & aerate materials using a shovel or pitch fork
Simple & “slow” method • Materials are layered in a pile or heap
• Turned occasionally
• Decomposition will occur in about a year
Active method • Enclosed containers or sheds
• Attention to the proper “mix” of green & brown ingredients
